Cats of the Afterlife #2

The Sharpest Claw: A Talking Cat Fantasy: Cats of the Afterlife, Book 2

Rate this book
Kittens are evil.

At least that's what Jem, a calico cat, thought. And she had proof. In the afterlife, she had watched kittens take over what used to be her home on earth, claiming her people and her cat companion, her best friend ever.

It wasn't right. In fact it was dangerous. These kittens were two-faced, violent, manipulative, and cunning. They had fooled everyone else into believing they were adorable. Only Jem knew the truth. But how could she convince the others? How could she make sure these kittens got their rightful comeuppance?

Witness the epic battle of wills between a calico cat and a pair of kittens in Book 2 of the Cats of the Afterlife series.

Here we have another cute, fun story of the entirely (not) utopia of the afterlife of cats.

About the audiobook narrator.
Although I really enjoyed her narration of the first book, here Kae Marie Denino's work leaves something to be desired.

In fairness, her voices are still very good. Even her male voices are believable. Her vocal inflections are skillful and her tempo shifts are passable.

The problem is the pauses.
There are a lot of random pauses that really jar the flow of the audiobook. In addition, at each sentence ending (or at least most of them) there is a pause that seems like it should indicate a scene break, and most paragraph endings come with a pause that lingers so long that it feels like it ought to signify a chapter ending.

It made the whole audio experience a lot less enjoyable that it otherwise would have been.

Now, the story.
As is my wont, I will forego a discussion of the plot. There are sure to be other reviews that will dive into that.

After the closure Jem and her friends had at the end of the first book, I wasn't certain what to expect from this one.

I'm pleased to say that while we see a new set of experiences and challenges, this is a similar tale to the first and has a similar tone.

Once again, many of Jem's problems would vanish if she would only take a step back and listen to what others are telling her, but therein lies much of the charm of her character.

There are some very cool developments in this book and I'm happy to see where Jem ends up, particularly in her social afterlife.

She has some really neat interactions, both with established characters and with new ones, and I love the growth she experiences in this story.

My one critique is her final epiphany that changes her perspective on the main conflict of the story seems to come just a bit too suddenly and without enough work and/or development to get there.

I love the part that Rusty and others play in the final climax/resolution of the story. There are some really fun things that go into it and I love where Jem ends up at the end.

Definitely looking forward to the next installment in this series.

Another great story about talking cats and what might happen after they die. The characters are well done and the interactions between them are great.

This is the second book of the Cats of the Afterlife series, inspired by cats I've known and loved and those who currently live with me and my husband. Since I was very young, I have always known about the importance of cats. I hope that these books provide entertainment and pay tribute to these wonderful animals.

This book is now also out as an audiobook, narrated by Kae Denino. Kae also narrated the first book of the series, The Loudest Meow, and she has a wonderful gift. i love to listen to audiobooks. It is my way of reading now. I'm very happy to have my books in this format with such a great narrator to tell my stories.

First , I wouldn’t have finished this if weren’t for my love of the first book. Along with speeding it up. It’s still my favorite and I’m glad I finally finished. It is amazing. I actually don’t mind animals. So, reading a book where’s they talk and have personalities is amazing! I would like to thank the author for the free copy to review. As always it’s still my opinion and I’m honest. Seriously Jems story is a hilarious. I recommend this to anyone who love animal centered mg books and just a overall good book!
