Life in Exile #2

Watcher's Question: Life in Exile, Book 2

Rate this book
Despite monsters and a small army of goblins and skeletons, Dave and family have survived their first few weeks in the harsh world of Eloria. Well, for the most part...

Eight-year-old Sara has been captured by the goblin scout, Krinnk. Nobody is sure if she was taken to be a snack or some twisted desire to protect her. Dave has found a new lease on life, a new connection with his family and a new sense of purpose. Neither he nor Emily are going to let a monster get away with their little girl.

But things are never quite as simple as they seem.

Their victory in the Battle of Eris' Rise has launched the Nelson family onto the stage of politics torn between the human kingdom to the south and the moon elves to the north.

Worse, the powers that created the death knight in the first place have more sinister plans in place and Dave's actions have marked him as an obstacle to be removed. He can only trust that his family, along with the new friends and allies they are making, will be sufficient to help them find their place in this new world.

Continue this epic LitRPG adventure with the second installment in the Life in Exile Series. It's perfect for fans of C.M Carney, Blaise Corvin, and Charles Dean.

The very intricate and indepth info dump can get really tedious, but I'm seriously enjoying the Life in Exiles series too much to care!

I love Emily and little Sara. Dave's a bit of a sook and Mira really needs some compassion added to her stats. Poor Jackson's lost in school politics while his family's out experiencing Eloria. The series just got better!

The Nelson family reminds me of so many I've known. The drama, their interactions, are perfect. Even with the changes going around them, they're still a family with all that means.

Great Continuation of One Families Grand Epic

This one picks up just a bit after where the last one takes off (with some vignettes to fill in the gap). The story continues to develop and we get a more broad view of the world (at least this portion of it) and get to know the major players.
We learn more about how the system and rules work as the family continues to level up and I'm excited to see where they go and develop.
Really sets up for more story and is definitely more in the epic fantasy style (but with books coming out much more rapidly!).
Can't wait for the next one.

Fantastic adventure!

Very much enjoyed this 2nd book. Well written, speed and detail is on point.
The dynamic of a family developing with each other is a new twist and I like it.

Looking forward to the third book, and fourth, fifth...

a bad book

i really expected this book cause the last one was pretty good but all my expectation shattered when i read it, the story doesn't move, the characters are all annoying: dave act like a child or like he care about he's family, he doesn't have a valid personality, mira have 480 iq and is still a stupid teen which doesn't make sence and emily always angry and unreasonable.
really didn't enjoy this one and hope that in the next one the character will be more build up and that you will have a valid plotline

Family fun in a rpg world.

I really liked the first one and I like this one as well but it kind of dragged having to go back through memories to get caught up to more current events. Every thing still solid. Really wanted more Jackson then we got but maybe that will become it's own story. Of course now have to wait for more of the story.

I liked it

The first part of the book was admittedly harder to get through because I'm not a huge fan of long flashbacks. That said, the story itself was great and I really liked the character growth. I'm excited for the next one in the series.

Alert

First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Over the past year it has become apparent that my reviews are somewhat antagonistic and I apologize to those of you that have taken offense. I think I had hoped to change peoples’ minds about reviewing works of art and that seems to have backfired spectacularly. However, I am still going to be true to myself and write what I believe.

To the author: Thank you for this chance to escape reality and enjoy the world you created! Keep up the good work.

To my fellow reviewers: Messaging me and reviewing my reviews is as productive as trying to shovel water out of the ocean. Stop. I get it. Let’s just all live peacefully.

To potential readers: Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

Cheers

Life in Exile 2: Watcher's Question by Sean Oswald is an immersive LitRPG adventure that picks up right where the first book left off. The Nelson family continues to adapt to life in Eloria, facing new challenges, powerful foes, and unexpected alliances.

I especially loved seeing Emily dive deeper into her Moon Elf heritage—it added a whole new layer to her character and her perspective on the world. The introduction of new characters and classes kept the story fresh and exciting, while Mira’s growth throughout the book was so satisfying to watch. And I have to say, their time in the Dungeon was an absolute highlight—full of tense moments, clever strategies, and fun surprises.

This book perfectly balances character development, world-building, and classic LitRPG adventure. I couldn’t put it down and can’t wait to see what happens next in their journey!

As a whole, I found this one easier to follow and the continuation of the family story was interesting. Mira is insufferable much of the time which, again, isn't a criticism. The evolution of the family and their respective stories was well done. My one constant struggle is Sara. She's supposed to be 8 but she's written like a 5 year old. She acts like she's five and she's treated like she's 5.

I think the world the author built is fantastic. It’s very interesting to see how the localized story of the main characters, the wider story of this world, and the even wider story of the cosmic level beings behind the scenes intertwine as the story moves forward. Amazingly all layers of the story manage to be equally interesting. The magic system and overall combat system is fantastic. I would actually like to see a game based on this type of combat system.

My only negative is the marital drama and Emily in general. Sometimes it felt like I was reading a book about a guy playing a video game with his disapproving wife standing over his shoulder giving scathing commentary the entire time. Reading about how a guy gets reamed out by his wife about everything possible thing is less than appealing. Whenever she is around everyone does nothing but walk on eggshells trying to avoid causing her to go into a Karen rage. The rest of the characters are great and it’s still a good book despite one awful character.

Something of a letdown after the first but passable second entry that has issues.

No spoilers here, we continue to follow the Nelson family for a few more weeks of their new lives.

The difficulties with the story start right off. It isn't easy to pull off In Media Res to start with and hopping characters where they EACH are in different action and are recalling the past 2 weeks increases the choppy pacing.

Once we catch up, the story evens out as the disparate family members reconnect though we see little of Jackson throughout. Strangely, the family is distracted repeatedly from what we thought was a critical main quest "Bug Attack!!! OMGWTFBBQ!" and it turns out to be a few pages. Sadly there is no resolution to the new story lines in this book and in fact we're not even treated to a cliff hanger. They split the party again, find the new threats and then we have an epilogue.

As for character development, they seem to be moving in their same paths: liberal mom, gamer dad, and dumb smart girl. Sara and Jackson's few pages don't lead far honestly but at least they have setup for the future .

The remaining issues I have are all editing related. Numerous grammar problems, sentences that look like they were edited partially and have no meaning and worst there are two sections where Emily and Mira are reversed for several sentences.

Pet peeve:
Chaff is the hull left over after harvesting wheat. Chafe is to rub something raw, irritate.
Chaffed means light hearted ribbing. Chafed is again to grind/rub/annoy physically or not.

I'm giving a 3 star review assuming that the grammar issues are resolved soon. Author, hopefully you get a report from Amazon when we identify errors in text.

Can’t find a likable character

The story is good and it is entertaining. The problem I find myself facing is that I don’t find anything likable about any of the main characters. Maybe it’s because there are so many of them, but they seem to caricatures of flaws. They are not relatable and often irritating. The constant POV switch’s in the first half of the story are often jarring. The story is interesting. There just isn’t enough of it. Overall even with the flaws the story is worth a read. It was a good enough book that I may read the next one. With any luck the author will continue to write about this world and maybe the next book will provide characters that make me feel invested in the story.

Cant recommend this series

The first book was ok but the author takes a feminist/liberal lean to his writing that just grates on my nerves. He bashes the main male character and continuously portrays men in a negative light. If you agree with his views you'll probably not mind, but I'm just all done with authors that use fiction to push politics, religious views, or gender views.

To be clearer, the male character is always wrong and stupid. The female character is always right and wise. The female character yells at and talks down to the male character about any decisions he makes--and it's ok for her to talk to him like that. The male character is criticized for leading his family in any way, while it's ok for the female character to make any decisions she wants.

If its sexist for a guy to treat a woman like that (and it is), then its sexist for a woman to treat a man like that.

This happens so often, and the main male and female mc's fight so much, that the series is stressful to read, not enjoyable.

Good book.

This was a good clean book. I enjoyed it but it had some editing issues. Normally editing issues don't bother me, but there were enough of them that it affected the stories flow.

Also the main character started to allow the enemy to monologue and gain the initiative. I dislike that in books unless there is a good reason for it or it is part of a characters flaw. Never let your opponent have the initiative they will do something you don't like.

Anyway for those two minor issues I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. They really were minor because I am looking forward to the next book.

Great story, practically illegible

Errors on every page made it hard to read. I was going to write a great review and encourage the author to fire his editor (Windows 95 grammar check), but then he forgot to include a climax. Extremely disappointing moment in a series that had great potential.

I really really didn't like the jumping around in the timeline Oswald did early in this book. It got better towards the end but the first half was a bit of a mess because of it.

The wife is still pretty insufferable and I hated any time she was in the story.

Subpar entry in a very average litRPG trilogy.
The modern-angsty family theme is still here and this time drags for far too long overshadowing the essense of the book.
I was expecting for the action to expand on a more epic scale. More litRPG and less family drama.

There are some town building and dungeon elements inside. Very few artefacts and some interesting but lackluster abilities.

The first half of the book is a bit confusing as the author tries a new narrative approach by using flashbacks. Two claps for the try, though overall a bit fancy for a popcorn genre, and in this case the execution was subpar. It really didn't go well, with some transitions being really really bad (like the MC having chapter-wide spanning flashbacks during the middle of a life-or-death fight #Dave's especially).

I really didn't enjoy the lengthy and repetitive life-couple dialogue. It's nice to see the dynamic, this is what sets this book apart from the fodder litRPG, but it felt artificial and not evolving. Is either too subtle and thus out of place (as litRPG is popcorn material) or simply badly executed and thus dragging.

I most enjoyed Sara's story, and even if both the first and the second books used her as ending cliffhangers, there's not much material in between. I would have loved to find out more about that EPIC and UNIQUE class of hers, and about those crazy-interesting drawing powers, and how that plays in the grand scheme of things. What about an interaction between Sara's monster powers and the swarm?!

And the swarm, that EPIC blight feared so much by everyone (including the moon elves) is treated as a two-day side quest, receiving less attention than even clearing an abandoned mine. #FAIL

It's disappointing to see the lack of epicness.

I'm pretty sure that if you enjoyed Watcher's Test, you're ready and waiting to dive back into the series... well, your patience has been rewarded!!!
Sean Oswald seamlessly sets the reader right back in the action with Dave Nelson and family. The events that started in Watcher's Test aren't over yet... not by a long shot! Sara's life is threatened when the goblin-scout Krinnk kidnaps her! Whew! You talk about mama bear hackles? see my review for bk1...
Peter Berkrot proves himself once again with a finely nuanced, AbsoDamnLutely awesome narration!!!
If you haven't yet started this series, I highly recommend purchasing the boxed set. That way, the cliffhanger endings won't leave you gasping and grasping for the next volume... it'll already be at your fingertips! 😊👍

Superb 2nd in the series

Thoroughly enjoyed this second in the series as it follows on nicely from the first. The characters continue to grow including the littlest one. The author even writes a great touch of naivety into her parts of the story which adds to the reading.

Plenty of fighting, dungeon diving, magic and conniving going on to keep the pages turning and the story flowing.

There’s more to come as plenty of wee strands are blowing around waiting for the author to tie them up or add even more so I for one can’t wait to read the next one.

Download and enjoy 😁

Book 2 confirms that I don't like the "I know better than you backwards locals do" mom, dad is impulsive, a trait at odds with his desire to protect his people, and I don't much care for 8-year-old kids in books.

The story is interesting enough to keep reading, and more and more moving parts are brought in as we move along. It'll be tricky for the author to bring that all together, so we'll see how well he executes in the next book.

Getting harder to keep track

The story was progressing well and was pretty enjoyable. Then the last 20% or so happened. The author was building up to the next book in the series, so new threads, characters and situations kept dropping in. So many I had a hard time keeping my interest going on the plot. I was getting irritated but thankfully got to the end. Normally I’m a bit sorry that the end of the story is reached, but not in this case.

Potential Unrealized

I slogged through the 1st book hoping time would mature the story. It didn't. Far, far too many weak and meaningless introspective breakouts. Too many parallel and unnecessary storylines only broken up by bumbling MCs. No real threats, no real strife, no real strength or growth. Poorly written children's tale at best - which is too bad because the foundations of the story had good potential.

This is a prefect blance of both action and story. While if you have read the first book you may have noticed the bit of jarring flashback and there is a bit of that in this book as well in the first half it mellowed out in the second half when you get caught up and then the book shine. The book had me wooping out load at the same time keeping me on my toes. Over all check this book out and injoy all the little easter eggs that Sean Oswald put in this amazing book.

While I am liking this series. Is there a side story that I have missed between book 1 and 2?! Suddenly we start book 2 with the main FL on a journey with people barely mentioned in the epilog. Chapter 2 is just such a huge info dump of characters and situations that leave you confused and wondering what happened in this small time jump.
I actually went looking for the side story and had to make sure I was reading book 2 and hadn't downloaded book 3 by mistake.

Sean continues to a great job of blending LitRPG tropes with those of traditional fantasy. His books though LitRPG it reads more like a true fantasy book with the gaming system aspects of RPGs making it one of my favorite so far in the LitRPG genre. The world continues to grow with great writing and the character arcs continue to expand and grow as the list of characters expands with side characters who enrich the overall story arc.

Another suspenseful book.

Watching this family struggle to survive is thrilling. Seeing this family get stronger and start to get more in the groove of things is even more exciting.. If you like family movies, than here's a good family book with plenty of action and a snotty know it all teenager.

A well crafted story

I ordered the first in this series because of the good reviews. When I realised it was a game based story I nearly stopped reading. I’m so glad I didn’t. The characters and situations have real depth and have completely drawn me in. This second book has revealed more of the characters, their motives and plots. I’m eager to start the next one now.

Acceptable. Some interesting things, a lot of meh. Trying to make things more world spanning, and even affecting universe level stuff but I'm not sure it's super effective. And an awful lot of characters with absurdly high intelligence not thinking of obvious things or doing truly unintelligent things even with forethought.

Still passable

Good story. I’m hooked

Not as good as the 1st book. The constant time jumps in the 1st half of the book are annoying and make it a bit difficult to read/listen to. Still, it’s a good story and I’m very much enjoying the plot of the Nelson family and all that is happening around them.
