Quantenphysik für Hippies

Rate this book

While I may be a scientist, I was still a bit nervous (more like intimidated) to read Quantum Physics for Hippies because physics was one of those science classes that I just didn’t do well in. Math and I don’t really get along, so the majority of it painstakingly flew over my head.

Quantum Physics for Hippies is a remarkable story where a quantum physicist (Alice) and a hippie (Bob) sit down and have a discussion with the intention to debunk the misconceptions surrounding quantum physics all while pondering the meaning of consciousness. Together these two embark on a hilarious spiritual and educational journey that explores particle wave duality, Schrödinger’s cat, quantum entanglement, and the role our consciousness plays in our perceived reality.

Now, you may be thinking that this book is not for you if you don’t have a scientific background, and that is simply untrue. I commend these authors for being able to take such high level information and make it digestible for the palates of all readers…not just those who bury themselves in physics manuscripts day in and day out. Additionally, the illustrations that Jun Matsuura contributes to further explain the experiments as well as provide even more comic relief were amazing.

Overall, if you love pondering life’s big questions all while keeping things light hearted and humorous then definitely pick this one up! Go into this one with an open mind then sit back and prepare to have your mind blown!

Thank you to the authors for providing a copy for review. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.

The physics was really good and easy explained but the actual storyline was in my opinion not that good. And with that it kinda ruined the hole reading experience.

What is consciousness and is quantum physics involved in consciousness?

“Quantum Physics for Hippies,” a book by physicists Dr. Lukas Neumeier and Dr. James Douglas, illustrated by Jun Matsuura, is written in a fun narrative style, enhanced by occasional illustrations of the physics concepts and characters. Alice and Bob are physicist’s favorite examples for explaining speed and vectors (Alice on rocket A travels west at an unknown speed and Bob on rocket B is traveling east, etc. etc.), now Alice and Bob get to finally meet in real fictional life, and they have a long conversation about quantum physics and consciousness. Can the hippie learn physics? Can the physicist learn mindfulness? Can the reader learn whether Schrodinger’s cat is real or not? The reader will have to decide for themselves.

Quantum computing, quantum entanglement, and theories of parallel universes are also described in the book, and several interesting quotes by Erwin Schrodinger are included throughout the text. The reader may learn more about quantum physics, and whether physicist or hippie, may also think a little more deeply about individuality or whether there is a collective oneness of all energy and even what consciousness may be. My personal curiosity about whether free paired quarks and quantum entanglement may be involved in consciousness and out-of-body experiences was not included, so the narrative style left me wanting to join the conversation.

Dr. Lukas Neumeier currently works at the Darrick Chang Group, ICFO Institute of Photonic Sciences, with a focus on atomic, molecular and optical physics, condensed matter physics and quantum physics. The group’s most recent research publication is “Reaching the optomechanical strong coupling regime with a single atom in a cavity.” Dr. James Douglas is a physicist with a research focus on ultracold quantum gases. Jun Matsuura is an artist specializing in pencil drawings.

as a physicist that has been described as a hippie™️, I have thoughts. I hated this book until the final ~10%. I was quick to judge and I’m really happy I stuck with it. I was upset with the narration. I quite simply abhorred the narrator and I fear I conflated the narrator with the authors / storyline. They subverted my expectations! Some legitimate reasons I still don’t quite enjoy it:
- the overuse of the word “nerd” is so cringey and dated and I just felt pushed away each time
- The seeming one-liner of r*pe? So out of pocket and it felt like there was no need for that
- Again at some points, either the narrator or authors felt it pressing to use provocative/contrarian language that felt unnecessary and uncomfortable
Some reasons I did:
- quantum physics being explained on this level was quite enjoyable!
- I loved the Schrödinger lens of this book. I enjoyed the quotes a lot
- The take on consciousness and those final few scenes really brought it together for me

To end on something a little more on the hippies side as opposed to the quantum physics side (if, after reading, you can still disentangle them), this passage:
“ [Brains constitute beliefs producing different maps of reality with ‘I am’ statements, such as ‘I am my job’, ‘I am my relationships’, ‘I am ugly’, ‘I am good’, etc.] What would happen if you were to successfully prove that these ‘I am whatevers’ can’t be true? If only ‘I am’ remains? […] You would just be. You would feel pure. […] That’s what is meant by enlightenment.”

This brief, gentle, witty, clever book does “exactly what it says on the can”, so if you are or ever were a hippy, go and buy it right now: you will be able to enjoy an evening of life-affirming, mind-bending ‘wow’ for less than the cost of some dodgy chemicals.

Alternatively, if you’re NOT a hippy, go and buy it anyway – it will answer questions that you never knew existed, and you will come away from it having laughed, marvelled, and opened your mind to things you always thought you could never understand. (Unless, of course, you are someone who has absolutely no curiosity about what reality is made of. If you are that incurious person, take a strong coffee and try to think of a more wakeful you who does have some curiosity. Quite possibly that more curious ‘you’ does actually exist in some parallel universe. They ought to buy this book.)

Written in the format of a long conversation between an accidentally-curious hippy and a curiously-sexy-even-if-rather-frumpy scientist, and with a glorious twist at the end, this is an instantly engaging book, whose many ‘asides’ made me laugh out loud. At the same time (making my laughter seem much more worthy) it also provided a compelling introduction to some of the (head-spinningly astonishing) ideas of quantum physics. Not patronising, not intimidating, just sharing the excitement of ideas that fall almost out of reach, beyond our tiny horizon.

OK. I admit it. I loved this book.

[Note of disclosure: I was gifted this book by the author for review purposes, but will try to be as unbiased as possible in my review]

I never imagined collecting my third High School year worth of physics classes, compress it into 179 pages and then mix it up with some philosophy and an interesting story, would make quantum physics so much easier to understand. Lukas Neumeir's book Quantum Physics for Hippies proved me wrong.

However, first of all, if you read this book solely for the story, you will most certainly be disappointed. Sure, the story is interesting, but that's mostly because Neumeir manages to mix in their lessons really well. If you only look at the story by itself, without the quantum physics, it's just 180 pages worth of communication between two characters. But I think that's completely fine, as the book's aim in the first place isn't necessarily to entertain, but to educate. The entertainment part feels like it's mostly there to make the lessons interesting. Which it, more than adequately, certainly does. You can say that you'll most likely come for the story and stay for the quantum physics. Because quantum physics really is an interesting subject, no matter how much I hated it in High School.

There are only two characters in the story, if you ignore those who only are mentioned or in the story a few sentences; Bob (love that name by the way) and Alice. Alice is the teacher of the book, the "nerd", who explains all quantum physics, but her character is not very developed. It's mostly "she likes research" and "she is a mysterious woman", but it's for a good reason. Bob, however, is more developed. He is the "hippie" of this book, the reason it's called Quantum Physics for Hippies the first place, and we get to know him quite well, his background, motivations, etc. He takes the role of "guide" in the book, reacting as we "stupid" readers do, drop quirky comments to make the book funnier, asks the questions to get the discussion moving forward as well as compares quantum physics to eastern philosophy and especially buddhism. This makes some hard to understand concepts more easily digested by people who aren't used to think in quantum terms.

The book uses a lot of really informative, drawn, images that explains a lot of concepts in an even easier way. They also look very cute. That is of course irrelevant, but it definitely isn't a negative thing.

The only real complaint I have with this book is that the ending is kind of weird and abrupt. It feels like Neumeir realized that "shit, I need to end this book too!" and then just put something together. It's definitely the weakest part of the book.

In general, I really like this book. It might lack as a bedtime story, but that isn't what it pretends to be either, and you've got to love a book that explains wave-particle duality with a beer can.

As a story book, I rate this as 5/10, but with the educational part in the equation, I raise that to an 8, since it does it job goddamn well. If Neumeir comes out with another of these, I'm definitely interested in reading that as well!

What an odd little book... I picked it up when/because it was offered for free in Amazon Kindle format.

It wasn't what I expected or hoped for, and took a really weird and surprising turn. A surprise isn't a bad thing, I did managed to enjoy it, and I also managed to learn one or two things and develop my thoughts on some of this (although it didn't go beyond what we already covered in first year physics at university) - however the direction it took means I can't really think of a target audience I could truly recommend it to.

Quantum Physics for Hippies
By Dr. Lukas Neumeier & Dr. James Douglas
ISBN –9781091891166
Published April 2019

Are you a truth-seeker? Are you always looking at things and wondering, “Why?” then this book is for you!

Dr. Neumeier and Dr. Douglas have created a fun dialogue between Alice, the scientist nerd and Bob, the spiritual hippie that attempts to explain the possibly unexplainable – the strange theory that describes the behavior of atoms and light - quantum physics.

“The common denominator …. each hippie and each nerd – is simply looking for the truth.” “The truth about who we are and how we fit into the universe. This search unites us all, regardless of social conventions.”

I’m an artist, not a mathematician or scientist. However, being an artist means that I’m always amazed and puzzled at what I see and that means everything I see around me. I want to know “why” things are like they are! I demand answers!

That’s why quantum physics has always intrigued me. In this book, I love the clever dialogue between Bob and Alice and their attempts to present simple answers to complex questions - and according to Occam’s Razor Theory, “The simpler the theory is, the more likely it is to be true.”

I love trees so I was pleasantly surprised to learn from Bob and Alice, “The atoms in our bodies are exactly the same as those in any tree, plant, animal, rock or star – and for some reason – those atoms organize themselves into a human.”

So, we’re all atoms, some of us are tree atoms and some of us are human atoms!

More mind-blowing information Bob and Alice share with us in their idle banter:
• In each single electron is the whole pattern.
• Information can’t be created or destroyed – just passed on.

I’ve always loved films about parallel universes and how they manifest, so I was totally intrigued by this thought, “It’s the parallel existence of infinite beings having all possible experiences at the same time. You’re never reborn – you’ve always existed.”

I didn’t quite grasp that, so fortunately Bob provided this insight. “There is just one everlasting unbreakable quantum wave. Inside that wave there are multiple Bobs occupying multiple universes, having different experiences, leading different lives, but the different universes can’t communicate with each other. So, each Bob thinks he is living in the only universe and each Bob is convinced he is the only Bob.”

I was really intrigued to discover “connected possibilities,” or “entanglement” that two possibilities exist simultaneously. Schrodinger’s Equation shows how a cat can be dead and alive – simultaneously.

More insights shared by Bob and Alice include “There are many of you. You are a multi-dimensional being living in many universes at once.”

“Conscious experience in a body which is dead or in a deep sleep – stops. But, globally, conscious experience goes on and if you are really consciousness itself, and there is only one consciousness as you say, your next possible experience must be an experience. You can’t experience not experiencing. You would experience the process of dying, but then you would instantly have another experience. Maybe you’d find yourself looking through another configuration of atoms. A new body. But that new body only remembers being that body, because it comes with its own memory, and for you, it feels like you have always been with that body.

“So, consciousness would experience dying, but would never remember it.”

Bob and Alice offered some parting take-away thoughts, “The Holy Grail is to see yourself as nothing and everything at the same time. Then you feel unshakable stability, complete freedom of any experience. While at the same time, feeling love and compassion for whatever appears inside of consciousness.”

An ending and beginning insight from Bob, “I believe that gaining full awareness of the mind is the next step to human evolution.”

Where will our minds take us tomorrow?

Are you a nerd? Are you a hippie? Are you, by any chance, a hippie-nerd? Are you intrigued by the scientific and mathematical works of Einstein, Schrodinger, & Hawkings?

Are you a sci-fi fan? Do you ever wonder if you’ve jumped into a different dimension—an alternate reality? Do you ever wish you could? Maybe, you’re a fairly neutral human being who is just plain curious.

Perhaps you are none of these things. Perhaps you are all of them—somewhere. Would you like to find out?

Now that I’ve gotten your attention. . .

Quantum Physics for Hippies, written by Ph.D.’s Dr. Lukas Neumeier and Dr. James Douglas, experts in the field of quantum physics, is a must-read even if you never really thought about quantum physics. The fact is, knowledge is growing and changing our world, whether we understand it or not.

The realm of quantum physics has already provided us with unimaginable (back in the day) technology and will continue to do so. Quantum mechanics leading to the development of computers, for instance, is just one example, but what about a topic close to my heart?

Have I “sparked” your interest further?

Neumeier and Douglas bring quantum physics to life in this fanciful, entertaining, enlightening, quirky and witty, exchange between a nerd, obsessed with quantum physics, and a hippie, obsessed with personal enlightenment and growth. Science and philosophy combine in a provocative, mind-bending adventure into the physical and spiritual realms and their relationship to each other. Even consciousness and the role that it potentially plays in our reality are explored (albeit in a rather sci-fi twist).

No college lecture on the subject could ever come close to this beautifully illustrated, entertaining exploration of the topic.

Be prepared to come away from this experience with a whole new perspective on the meaning of life and the universe as we know it.

This is a delightful book that explores the nature of quantum reality from a classical mindset in an easy-to-understand way. The literary device is rather straightforward—two stereotypes meet up in a bar. Is it a chance meeting, a cosmic synchronicity, or something else? Is it all of these, none of these, or both? You won’t know until you read the book, at which point these comments will be easier to comprehend.
In either/or/both/neither case, one player in this verbal discourse is a geeky physicist; she is an authority on quantum theory history and mystery. The protagonist is a somewhat burned out posterchild for New Age self-help and spirituality. They both like to drink.
Their encounter gives rise to a cheeky conversation. While it is less than a Socratic dialogue, it is entertaining, informative, and engages the reader in a thought-provoking manner. The authors have managed to check off all the “e” boxes that I like: entertainment, education, engagement, and enjoyment.
There is a blend of science and spirituality, a dance of the divine masculine and feminine, and a discussion of life and death. This last matter relates to Schrodinger’s cat, a feline thought experiment to shake the foundations of your notion of reality. Two of my favorite topics—quantum entanglement and the nature of consciousness, are among many of the topics touched upon.
The quirky humor sprinkled into the characters’ encounter, and the inner thoughts of the protagonist add extra spice and delight to this exploration into quantum reality. In the multiverse of possible books to read, I give this two thumbs up. Full disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for a promise to review.

I have to admit that I was a little unsure about reading this. I'm no genius, so I thought I'd struggle to grasp the concepts laid out in the book. I was pleasantly surprised at how wrong I was.

Reading this book didn't just explain things like Quantum Entanglement or Shrodinger's cat theory, it helped change the way I perceive myself and the universe around me - the one I'm aware of at least!

Read this blew my mind but in a gentle way, like slowly easing me into an endless wealth of knowledge. I understood everything explained and the way it's written made it fun to read. Everything has an easy to understand analogy and the the hippy's thought process helped break everything down further. I loved the bickering and laughed out loud a few times.

I'd definitely recommend that everyone read this book because I think makes you think differently and is enriching.

Excellent overview of Quantum Mechanics in simple terms

I have studied Quantum Mechanics and philosophy of physics for decades and this book is a wonderful approach to describing quantum weirdness, the Copenhagen, and the Many Worlds interpretations of quantum mechanics. Further, while nearly all serious books on the subject gloss over the implications related to observers and consciousness, this one dives straight to the heart of what it means to be a conscious being in a quantum universe.

I enjoyed the casual conversation between two different personalities/professions as a way to distill some of the concepts of quantum physics and bridge the gap between science and belief. The ending was an unexpected twist and, while a neat idea in and of itself, felt like an unwelcome tug from seemingly non-fiction to fiction. However, I did not care for the flippant use of the words “rape” and “child pornography,” the latter being an outdated term, as pornography implies consensual acts and children cannot consent to sexual abuse.

It is beyond me how science classes---all the way up to and through college---could be so dreadfully hard to endure while random reading about science topics can be so alluring. This book is definitely of the alluring variety. A lot of lovely New Age propaganda has grown out of quantum physics but you won't find any of that in this book. As a layman's guide to the subject, the authors have done a fine job collecting the mindblowing ideas that have sprung from quantum physics while explaining what particle physics really is. I kept thinking "That can't be right," then flipping back a few pages to reread. I did that a lot. Not because I'm not a math genius, but because the ideas don't slot nicely into any thoughts that normal people have, even science nerds. At street level, QP is fun, mind-twisting, and just plain weird.

If I have any qualms about Quantum Physics for Hippies it is that it's also a strange and fun novel with a sudden twist at the end that made me doubt the veracity of the scientific material. Also, there is no action in the novel until the very end, so don't look for an entrancing, ongoing story. But there is enough of a story to satisfy me as if the story of quantum physics wasn't enough. I thank Kindle Unlimited for dangling this book in front of me. I'm going to buy it. I need it to remind me that the world we dwell in isn't the real world after all.

I have read this book twice now. I liked it just as much the second time.
