Nothing gives Anna and Felty Helmuth greater satisfaction than seeing their grandchildren happily married--except for planning their next matchmaking venture. And as springtime comes to Huckleberry Hill, Wisconsin, the air is filled with promise. . .

Ever since the Helmuths' grandson, Ben, abruptly broke his engagement and moved to Florida, Emma Nelson has kept busy tending her vegetable garden and raising award-winning pumpkins. She can put her heartache aside to help Ben's Mammi with her own pumpkin patch. At least until Ben shows up to lend support to his ailing Dawdi. . .

Gardening side by side with pretty, nurturing Emma is a sweet kind of torture for Ben. She could have her pick of suitors who can offer what he can't, and he cares too much to burden her with his secret. Leaving once more is the only option. Yet Emma's courage is daring him to accept the grace that flourishes here, and the love that has been calling him back to Huckleberry Hill. . .

Huckleberry Spring was such a solid installment and I had so much fun with this one here. I absolutely adored this book so much. Its one of my favorites of the series so far. These books are becoming such comfort reads for me. They are inspirational romance but I am just loving it and it makes me want to read more of this sub genre, I just haven't read that much of it but sometimes its refreshing to pick up a spiritually filled read. I really enjoyed the way that this one was implemented.

This story was quite interesting, because at first you wonder what really is driving this couple appart. There isn't a feeling on what is actually going on in why the hero broke off the engagement. Its been a year, the grandparents hatch a plan to bring these two together. And there is a lot of pain on both sides, but you know that there is more to it than what the hero originally reveals. And when its revealed why he broke things off, then you really understand his side of it all. There is plenty of tension between these two as they work through their unresolved issues. And when all is revealed then your heart just breaks for him. But seeing the way this heroine, is so devoted to this hero just is so humbling. The way she is willing to fight for their relationship just was amazing. And this author is convincing me how much Amish romance is really working for me!

Overall I found Huckleberry Spring to be such an endearing romance that won my heart deeply and captivated me!

Ben breaks his engagement to Emma and moves to Florida. But Ben isn’t clear about his reasons, and Emma’s suppositions are incorrect. Then Ben comes back to help out his grandparents, and the two are thrown back together. Secrets and misunderstandings abound in this romantic tale which is also liberally dosed with humor. The characters are endearing, and readers can’t help but hope they will get their happily ever after, even while circumstances indicate a different ending. Jennifer Beckstrand has penned a delightful series with the continuing characters of Anna and Felty. I hope they never run out of grandkids to marry off!

Loved it! This book was laugh-out-loud funny in some places, and unexpectedly poignant and serious in others. I’ve read almost the whole series now, and of the ones I’ve read, this one is my favorite by far. The humor is spot-on, and is it ever necessary here! When things turn toward more serious themes, the humor helped the story hit a very fine mark: it was powerful without being preachy, and it was serious without being tedious or bleak. Amazing job.

Anna and Felty want to get their grandchildren married. Ben broke up with his girlfriend and moved to Florida. To get Ben back to marry her. Anna calls Ben home saying that Felty needs surgery and they need Bens helps. Ben didn’t tell them the real reason he broke up with his girlfriend and the secret stays until almost the end of the book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book as a part of a book tour for a fair and honest review and rated it 4.5 out of 5 Stars.

Matchmaking grandparents, a confused would be groom and his dumped fiancée are the focus of Jennifer Beckstrand’s Huckleberry Spring, the fourth book in her Matchmaker’s of Huckleberry Hill series. Colorful characters, emotional angst and a second chance romance kept me turning the pages from start to finish. Reminding us that “Love is patient”, Ms. Beckstrand’s story is one any romance lover will enjoy.

Ever since Ben Helmuth broke their engagement and took off for Florida, Emma Nelson has kept busy and worked on “self-improvement”. Determined to “keep on a happy face” and not others see how heartbroken she is, Emma has attended every social gathering, improved her cooking and concentrated on being less accident prone. One area where she naturally excels is gardening so when Anna Helmuth, Ben’s Mammi (Grandmother) asks her for help, she reluctantly agrees. After all, it’s not like she’s going to run into Ben since he’s in Florida. Only Emma didn’t know about Anna’s matchmaking plans, or about Ben’s return from Florida.

Ms. Beckstrand does a great job developing the characters in this story; I easily connected with Emma; she’s a sweet girl who thinks of others first, is somewhat of a day dreamer and needs help with her homemaking skills. Ashamed of being dumped by someone like Ben, who she considers the perfect man, after having overlooked so many of her failings in the past, Emma takes all of the blame for their failed engagement. Even though she’s really clueless as to why Ben dumped her.

Ms. Beckstrand also does a good job developing Ben, I was also able to connect with him even though there were plenty of times I was frustrated by his behavior. Hard working and kind, Ben has the tendency to take responsibility for everything and everyone around him. He also has a tendency to keep secrets or keep things to himself that he should share and he never thought about how breaking off his engagement the way he did and fleeing to Florida would make others look at Emma.

As usual, Anna and Felty Helmuth are fabulous secondary characters and Anna’s plan to get Ben back to Huckleberry Hill really required Felty to make some personal sacrifices. I have to say she’s been very lucky so far that her “schemes” haven’t really injured anyone yet. They both make me laugh though and their marriage is a shining example of what being in love should look like, regardless of your age.

Will Emma ever discover why Ben really broke off their engagement? Will Ben share his secret with his grandfather and take his advice about matters of the heart? Will Emma and Ben’s love really be able to conquer all? You’ll have to read Huckleberry Spring to find out. I enjoyed it and can’t wait to see what new adventure Anna cooks up next when she decides to match up another one of her grandkids.

Title: HUCKLEBERRY SPRING
Author: Jennifer Beckstrand
Publisher: Zebra
January 2015
ISBN: 978-1420136494
Genre: Amish romance

Nothing gives Anna and Felty Helmuth greater satisfaction than seeing their grandchildren happily married--except for planning their next matchmaking venture. And as springtime comes to Huckleberry Hill, Wisconsin, the air is filled with promise. . .

Ever since the Helmuths' grandson, Ben, abruptly broke his engagement and moved to Florida, Emma Nelson has kept busy tending her vegetable garden and raising award-winning pumpkins. She can put her heartache aside to help Ben's Mammi with her own pumpkin patch. At least until Ben shows up to lend support to his ailing Dawdi. . .

Yet Emma's courage is daring him to accept the grace that flourishes here, and the love that has been calling him back to Huckleberry Hill. . .

HUCKLEBERRY SPRING is the fourth book in the Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill series. I haven’t had the privilege of reading the other books, but its okay as this one easily stood alone.

I have to admit that I love Ms. Beckstrand’s voice. Her sense of humor is top-notch and shines through her writing. The events in Emma’s life were way over-the-top, but while not exactly believable at times, it was an enjoyable read for the most part. The characters were very immature for most of the book, Emma spending a lot of it in tears, but when she needed to be strong the most, she was. Both Ben and Emma were super kind, going out of their way to serve others. Ben especially wanted to take care of Emma—keeping a guard-like eye on her—but yet he left her for a year without any protection so it seemed odd that when he was home he didn’t trust her to be careful. The faith message was weak, but again, the humor and the romance were great. I’m giving it four stars.

Available in ebook and paperback as well as large print. 352 pages.

Huckleberry Spring by Jennifer Beckstrand
The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill #4
6h 58m narrated by C. S. E. Cooney

Genre: Christian Fiction > Amish Fiction; Romance > Contemporary Romance, Christian Romance > Amish Romance; Inspirational

Featuring: Grandparents, Matchmaking, Wisconsin, Farming, Second Chance Trope, Klutz, Walking Disaster, Insecurities, Unworthy Trope

Rating as a movie: PG-13

My rating:⭐️⭐️💐

My thoughts: 📱22% 1:30:23 Ch. 4 - This story is gonna give me a cavity. Oh well, I already have the next 8 books so I'm committed to finishing the series this week.
📱56% 3:53:04 Ch. 10 - every character in this story is juvenile. The plot is so ridiculous I don't have a trope for it.
📱68% 4:44:51 Ch. 13 - Hopefully, it gets better from here.

I really liked 2 out of the last 3 books so I was surprised to not like this one. The plot wasn't for me and even though it got better in the end it wasn't enough to save it for me.

Recommend to others: Not as a stand-alone, but I think you may have I deal with it. I didn't see any connections to other stories so it could be skippable.

I read this because my sister made me do it. 😂😣 It’s very apparent that this isn’t my kind of book. It had its cute moments, but most of it really annoyed me. Especially the guy. Ugh.......... I think those you like these books, though, will enjoy it.

Emma Nelson's happiness was swept away from her when Ben Helmuth broke her heart. With no explanation he broke off their relationship and moved to Florida, leaving Emma heartbroken. She tried unsuccessfully to find happiness, but her love for Ben hadn't lessened. A clumsy girl, she suffered numerous accidents and suffered incessant teasing. Ben's grandmother summoned him home to help out on the farm while his grandfather recuperated from surgery. Reluctantly Ben agreed, secretly hoping to avoid contact with Emma.

Huckleberry Spring is the fourth in a series of Huckleberry Hill Amish books. I haven't had the pleasure of reading the prequels to this book, but the story stands well on its own. Some background information may have been helpful, but not a necessity. Ben's grandmother is quite a character, looking for ways to keep her grandson home in the Wisconsin Amish community. Each of the characters in this book are strong personalities, and their roles are well defined. At times I found myself feeling sorry for poor Emma, but she shed enough tears for the entire cast of characters. Other times I found myself laughing aloud over humorous incidents that were cleverly written.

Throughout the first portion of the book I felt as if I wanted to move the story along, but once the action picked up speed I was absorbed in the story. Jennifer Beckstrand has a gift for bringing her cast of characters to life, making them realistic and familiar. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Huckleberry Hill and the developments that transpired throughout. Life was described in a realistic fashion that I found refreshing. Many times a story is glossed over, but not this one. The author brought realistic issues to life through this Amish community. Pick up a copy and enjoy!

OH MY WORD!

OK… right up front I have to be honest with you. My plans for reading this book were a bit derailed when my devious mother told me someone dies in the book.

She is such a rat! She just loves to needle me when she gets to read a book first and she loves dropping bombshells with absolutely no explanation!

Anyway, coupled with the emotional turmoil that was currently going on among the pages, I thought I might just be better off stopping right where I was.

But boy oh boy… am I glad I didn’t!

“DO NOT LET ANYTHING stop you from reading this book!”

I always say the current book is the best I’ve read yet and it’s always true! Each one of Jennifer’s books get better and better and better!

“This book is by far and away the best I’ve read yet!”

And one of the best things about Jennifer’s books is that I always want to go back and read from the beginning so I get to read all my favorite parts and then breeze right into the new story as if there were no agonizing months in between waiting for it to release!

And I don’t mind telling you that I had some reservations about this story when I read the sneak peek.

“Surgery… poor Felty. That man really will do anything for his sweet Anna!”

Only Jennifer Beckstrand could write such a story and make it so wonderful! Only Jennifer could write such a heart-breaking story and make it so wonderful! Only Jennifer could come up with such a roundabout story of gut-wrenching pain and redemption and weave romance through the entire thing!

“WOW! WOW! WOW!”

And, as usual, I can hardly wait to start the next one! Especially since I read the sneak peek!

This book needs 10 stars! Can I give it 10 stars...

Anna and Felty are at it again; at least Anna is with her meddling in her grandchildren’s love life; think she wants to find mates for every one of them.
Anna and Felty make a delightful pair, Anna’s cooking leaves a lot to be desired, she cannot cook, and Felty he loves her cooking, he cannot taste anything. They are meant for each other.
This time poor Felty is in for a lot of medical procedures, and bless his heart he does as Anna asks. This time they have their Grandson Ben return from Florida, poor Felty has to have surgery, and they need his help! Ben was engaged to Emma, and broke off with her rather quickly and went to live in FL. Now Anna has recruited Emma to help her grow a prize pumpkin for one of her two-year-old grandsons.
You can guess how Emma and Ben are going to be thrown together again, but how will it turn out. There are a few bombshells here, and some other Grandchildren who might find a spouse in all of this. There is also Ben’s sister Lizzie and Emma’s twin brother Mahlon, or Mailman as Lizzie calls him. Funny.
There are a few very serious sides to this story, and you will love the banter here. This one will keep you page turning, and the enjoyment is on every page.

I received this book through the Author and Pump Up Your Book Virtual Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.

I am so lucky to have been able to read Huckleberry Spring! Jennifer Beckstrand is such a fun author. There is a little of everything in her books, including humor.

So Anna and Felty Helmuth are at it again. Anna has a grandson, Ben, whom she wants to "marry-off" and she wants his ex-fiance to be the one!

But since Ben just dumps her without explanation, leaves Bonduel, WI. and heads to Florida, it will not be an easy to fix situation. But, of course, Anna is up to a challenge.

Will she succeed or fail? But Ben carries a secret alone in his heart that will change lives forever.

Jennifer's characters are well developed and the story lines are always new and interesting. Never a dull moment. You can read this book as a stand alone, but I highly recommend the earlier books in the series because they will keep you waiting for more. This is a great read! I am so happy I was able to read this!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review. There was no monetary compensation and opinions are my own.

Huckleberry Springs is my first experience with author Jennifer Beckstrand and I was not disappointed. Even though I had not read the previous books, I was able to follow the storyline with ease. I was drawn in and read the book in one sitting. I could not put it down!

Beckstrand did a fantastic job in bringing her characters to life. I love the relationship of Anna and Felty (Mammi and Dawdi). They are such a cute couple who bring humor to the story which I haven’t found in many Amish stories. The tension between Emma and Ben drives the plotline of the story and keeps you reading. Anna’s brother and Ben’s sister also add tension and humor to the story.

Huckleberry Springs will make you experience a whirlwind of emotions. It was and encouragement to me to remember that it is important to trust God, to not let pride get in the way of the plans God has for us and the consequences of what can happen when we do.

I can not wait to read the next installment in this series and I want to go to read the first three. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

A huge thankful to Perspectives By Nancee and Jennifer Beckstrand for the giveaway in which I won a copy of Huckleberry Spring. I have received no monetary compensation for my opinions nor my review.

Huckleberry Spring, By: Jennifer Beckstrand
This is by far this best book yet in the Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill series. Jennifer Beckstrand has such a wonderful way of making her characters come to life in her stories. This book had me in stitches I was laughing so hard. The unexpected that happens and leaves you reeling with the thought what will happen next. Be sure to have your tissues and drink and anything else that you want before you start to read this book. You won’t want to put this book down. I couldn't get enough of this book. It was so good, I felt like I was part of it. These characters have touched me so. You gotta love the antics of Anna. Kind good hearted Anna always wanting to see those that she loves happy and in love. After all who knows better that Anna who is in love and who should be together. An excellent book. Be sure to get your copy today. 5 stars!! I highly recommend this book!

The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill series are my go to books for sweet and cheerful romances. Jennifer Beckstrand always managed to make me laugh with her delightful set of characters.

In this book, Anna Helmut is trying to get her grandson Ben back together with his ex-fiancée Emma, and her poor husband Felty gets caught in the middle.

With two intertwined love stories, laugh-out-loud scenes, and an underlining message of faith and hope, Huckleberry Spring is one of my favorite in the series so far. It makes for a great spring or summer read, and I would highly recommend it to fans of Amish fiction. The only thing I liked a little bit less about the book is the ending, which seemed a little too good to be true, but I still enjoyed it.
5 strong stars for me! ;)

Jennifer Beckstrand brings the comic duo of Anna and Felty Helmuth to life, as they set about marrying off their grandchildren (who are taking WAY too long on their own.)

Ben Helmuth broke his engagement to Emma then moved to Florida so he wouldn't have to see the pain he caused her. He knows he can't ever marry anyone, but he has loved Anna since childhood and wants her to find happiness - even if it's with someone else.

Try as she might, Emma Nelson can't get over losing Ben. Her family is sick and tired of seeing her fountain of tears, and she has long ago run out of places to hide so she can cry in peace. She's tried dating other guys, going to every social event, and just about everything else her family expects of her, but nothing has mended her heart. When Ben returns to help Felty run the farm, how can she stay away when Anna has also asked for her help?

Good grief! Anna and Felty are a menace! Or rather, Anna is. She's willing to put Felty into a doctor's care - sure, it's for fairly minor surgeries, but it's surgery nonetheless - in order to get her grandson to stay. I couldn't believe Felty didn't refuse to stay down, or refuse any of the things she insisted he do for this cause. Yes, Ben and Emma love each other, and both of them are miserable without the other, but Ben has good reason - or thinks he does - to cut Emma loose.

Hilarity ensues as the accident-prone Emma stumbles through nearly everything she does, as both her twin brother, Mahlon, and Ben try to protect her from herself, and as Anna and Felty meddle to keep Ben from leaving. Will Emma ever discover that she's stronger than she thinks? Will Ben discover that love is one of God's gifts that he really shouldn't try to throw away?

I listened to this one from my local library, and it was a fairly quick "read". My only criticism is that the narrator mis-pronounced Mahlon every time. It should be M a - lon (long a) NOT Mah - lon (ah sound). Instead of researching the pronunciation a bit, she pronounced it like it looks. Otherwise, it was well done.

I’ve never been a fan of stories whose whole plot are drawn out conflicts that could’ve have easily been resolved with a simple conversation. Unfortunately this installment was only that.

“I lost a year with you because you thought you were being unselfish?” Loose quote by the female protagonist to the male protagonist after the issue is brought up finally.

This applies also to the best friend of the female protagonist. They didn’t speak for months due to a simple misunderstanding! So when it is resolved you really feel like it was all a waste of time.

I also felt like the way that the book was written - starting right in the middle of their story - was confusing to me. I kept on referring to the previous books in the series to see if I missed something or if they were a couple already mentioned.

Emma seemed to be almost too helpless for my taste as well. Truly I was worried about her future (not to echo Adam and his family’s thoughts).

Beside all of that Jennifer Beckstrand is one of the best authors of this genre and I overall am always satisfied after reading her stories.

Her pairings have some of the best chemistry I’ve read in the genre (and beyond) and Ben and Emma are no exception! Especially with them being Amish and separated for most of the book - what talent it is to have their love something that you (as the reader) can feel.

His reasons for pulling away from Emma was quite compelling and it made sense, but I’m obviously glad that it was resolved for their sake.

The Helmuth grandparents are endlessly entertaining and funny and I enjoy all the quirks they bring to each book. I love how resigned Felty was to Anna’s schemes finally and how far they went to give Ben and Emma all the time they needed.

Gardening side by side with pretty, nurturing Emma is a sweet kind of torture for Ben. She could have her pick of suitors who can offer what he can't, and he cares too much to burden her with his secret. Leaving once more is the only option. Yet Emma's courage is daring him to accept the grace that flourishes here, and the love that has been calling him back to Huckleberry Hill. . .

Oh boy, this was an eye-roller for sure. While I enjoyed the ending and the tie-in to faith and humility helping one overcome obstacles, I really really disliked both main characters. They were just downright stupid. How many willful misunderstandings can one star- crossed couple have? The constant references to wishing they could just die rather than sort out their ridiculous issues...and the absolutely obnoxiously overblown clumsiness got so old and tired.

Due to the constant repetition of themes, the characters came across as entirely one dimensional...Emma was sobbing, depressed, mind-numbingly insecure and unbelievably accident prone. Ben was too prideful (stupid) to acknowledge how asinine his choice to run away without explanation was...and incessantly overprotective.

No beuno.

I enjoy Jennifer Beckstrand's work. I count on her for giggle-inducing stories that include a little bit of fun, a lot of romance, and some good ol' fashioned reliance on God.
This book had that and to spare, but it also was a bit of a departure for me, as it also included some very heartbreaking scenarios. I won't spoil anything, but be aware that you might want to have some tissues close to hand.
As to Emma and Ben? They were easy to love, even if they were both too stubborn for their own good at times. I enjoyed their pairing (but then again, Mammi Annie and Dawdi Felty always seem to understand how best to match their grandchildren).

This was a nice Amish story about a couple in love and how a misdiagnosis caused havoc in their lives. He broke up their engagement because he thought he had ALS. He does have a disease but not as fatal as ALS. She thinks he broke up with her because she is accident prone and he doesn't want to have to take care of her all the time. He actually asks other men to date her. A well written story.

Who knew Anna could put so many grandchildren together with pumpkins and jalapeno peppers. Ben could never resist helping, and he loves hard, but a medical misdiagnosis may be the best thing to ever happen to him. And Emma.
