My Alien Life: A Novelette

Rate this book
A sassy and sweet coming-of-age story full of laughs, tears, and everyday strangeness.

"My mother was a no-nonsense woman. If it wasn’t in the Bible or on Jerry Springer, then it couldn’t happen. Of course, there’s a lot of freaky stuff in the Good Book, with ladders to heaven and angels with animal faces and such. And crazy, muckraking talk shows probably aren’t the best yardstick for anything short of how depraved humans can be. But the point is that when she was abducted by aliens and impregnated with me, she had some trouble processing.” — Lynette, aged 9

So begins this heartwarming, speculative tale of an unusual child who finds a home—and love—with her feisty Great-great-aunt Magnolia Rose McClellan. Set in rural North Carolina, this Southern fiction "novelette" is short enough for a lunch break—though you may want to have some tissues handy!

My Alien Life A Novelette
by J. Martain, narrated by April Doty

What a sweet story! The only thing that I wish was different about this short story is that I wish we could follow sixteen year old Lynette on the next leg of her journey through life. I'm going to think things work out for her because she's very intelligent and her Great-great-aunt Magnolia Rose McClellan, and Lynette's daddy before her, had brought Lynette up right. You'll have to take Lynette's word for it about her mother although that is her late father's version of how it all happened so maybe there was some fabrication in the telling.

April Doty's voice was perfect for this audiobook.

In a Nutshell: An unusual novella that took me by surprise! Don’t let the ‘Speculative Fiction’ tag scare you away.

Narrated in the first person perspective of Lynette, the story tells us of how she is sent to live with her Aunt Magnolia aka Mags at the age of nine after her father’s death. Mags is quite old but this doesnt make her weak. Her idea of parenting is very different from the one Lynette is used to, but soon, the child relishes the different lifestyle, full of firm care and concern for nature and holistic living. How will this unusual relationship develop?

Note that the titular ‘alien’ is both relative and literal here. You’ll know more only when you read the book.

First things first. The genre. While the story contains elements of speculative fiction, it is not typical of the genre. So if you like good old ordinary fiction and don’t mind a few sprinklings of spec-fic thrown in, you will still love this story.

What clicked with me:
👌 Memorable, well-developed characters, which is quite a rarity for this length. Mags and Lynette are excellent and their shoulders carry the story well.

👌 Within the first few lines, I went "Wait, what?" The ending made me go “What?” yet again. Both in good ways.

👌 Short and quick-paced.

👌 Unusually descriptive for this genre. Excellent imagery.

👌 The focus on the importance of nature and its bounty.

👌 The unconventional yet remarkable friendship between a centenarian and a tween.

👌 Realistic and grounded. Not at all OTT.

👌 Can’t believe it covered so much within just 4 chapters.

👌 Covers a lot of emotions. Heartwarming and sweet.

👌 Gorgeous cover.

⚠ The blurb promises this to be a great Southern experience. If that works for you, it’s yet another positive. I am on the wrong continent to be passing remarks on the authenticity of this claim. All I know is, if this is Southern fiction, I enjoyed it.

What could have clicked better:
👎 Wanted more at the end.

👎 Not as “speculative fiction” as the title and the blurb promised. Assumed more “alien” stuff to be present in the content.

👎 Leaves the otherworldly elements unexplained and undetailed.

All in all, while I did expect more ‘alien’ content, I was still blown away by what I got. This is a wholesome story that creates a massive impact within 38 pages. Definitely recommended when you are looking for a quick and impactful read with excellently sketched characters. A well-written and worthwhile indie effort.

4.5 stars.

My Alien Life by J. Martain is a Southern Fiction Novella!

If you're hoping for a "speculative tale", as the synopsis promises, you'll need to look elsewhere. What you'll find here is a Coming-of- Age story in the first person voice of a girl named Lynette.

When Lynette is nine years old, her daddy dies and the only relative willing to take her in is her fierce, six-foot tall, boisterous Great-Great-Aunt-Magnolia-Rose. She's a big presence who's never afraid to speak her mind.

Mags, for short, is the oldest sister of Lynette's Great-Great-Grandmother on her mother's side. That would make Mags about how old, do you think? Does older than dirt come to mind?

The only question Mags asks Lynette is if she can take care of herself after she turns sixteen and, if she can, Mags will take care of her and stay alive until that day. After they each make their promise to the other, they begin a quiet, simple life together in Mags little trailer down a road in rural North Carolina...

My Alien Life audiobook is a quick, satisfying one hour listen that covers a lot of living, loving, and caring during the seven years Lynette and her Aunt Mags live together, and at the end of the day, you'll wonder who needs who more. The narrator, April Doty, does a great job of giving Southern authenticity to this story with her exceptional voicing.

The "alien" part, you ask? Well now, you'll just need to listen to the story like I did, won't you?

My Alien Life is a great way to fill an hour of your time and I recommend it to those who enjoy Southern Fiction, like I do, or have an interest in trying it on for size!

4⭐

My Alien Life is a touching yet bittersweet coming-of-age story set in the American South. There were certainly fewer aliens than I'd expected, but I still enjoyed this audiobook quite a bit.

For such a short “novelette” (the audiobook is around an hour), the characters were well-developed and the plot surprisingly robust. Aunt Mags was a particularly delightful character and I loved her sass and attitude.

I also enjoyed the narration more than I thought I would since southern accents are often a little challenging for me when it comes to audiobooks – I like to listen to my books at pretty high speeds and southern drawls can sound super funky at 1.75x. The narrator for this novelette had a lovely, soothing accent, however, so I only sped it up to 1.25x and it worked out just fine. She also did the character voices really, really well.

The alien bits were amusing, but seemed so out of place in what was otherwise a perfectly normal, non-extraterrestrial tale. I guess that's why it's tagged as speculative fiction?

Overall, this was an enjoyable and heart-warming read. I wish it had been longer, because I would have loved to listen to more anecdotes about Aunt Mags and Lynette.

Many thanks to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial Audio for providing me with a copy of this audiobook to review.

One Liner: Heartwarming

Lynette goes to live with Aunt Magnolia (Mags) after her father’s demise. She’s a nine-year-old with no friends or anyone else in her life. Moving with Aunt Mags opens up a new world, where Lynette learns nature’s secrets, self-reliance, and confidence. But things can’t stay the same forever, and Lynette may have to make another choice soon.

The story comes in the first-person POV of Lynette.

My Observations:

As a short story writer and fan, this little book was a delightful experience. The story doesn’t feel like speculative fiction except at the beginning and the end. This can be an advantage or disadvantage, depending on the reader’s expectations.

The imagery is beautiful and reminded me of Foster by Claire Keegan. The themes overlap, while the books deal with two different issues.

Aunt Mags is a wonderful character. I love people like her- the ones who teach how to look at life and navigate the ups & downs with grace and persistence.

You need to go with the flow rather than ask questions, as some things are left unsaid (felt like a deliberate choice).

The ending was a little too quick. I understand the why, but it could have been a couple of paragraphs longer to lead the readers to the inevitable ending.

To summarize, My Alien Life is a bittersweet and heartwarming short story that leaves you with a soft smile (once the ending sinks in). Oh, I like the wordplay in the title and how it works in the story.

Thank you, BookSirens and J. Martain, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

Complete audiobook review

A 9-year-old Lynette lived only with her father. When he dies, great aunt Magnolia takes care of her. Aunt Mag is quite old (older than someone who would usually take care of a child), but she says she plans to live another seven years. By then, Lynette will be sixteen. Life changes for Lynette with aunt Mag. She teaches her how to sew and garden.

For such a short story, it is surprisingly good, and characters are well-developed. I wouldn’t say the genre is speculative fiction, as there are only two details to indicate that. It is more general fiction, a bitter-sweet story (but mostly sweet) set in the American South. I must admit that this is not something I usually choose to read. But I liked it anyway.

I read this novelette a while ago. I decided to try also the audio format because I was curious about the narration. April Doty did great, narrating this bitter-sweet story about Lynette.

My Alien Life is a novelette in 4 chapters on just 38 pages, or 1 hour in audio format.

My mother was a no-nonsense woman. But the point is that when she was abducted by aliens and impregnated with me, she had some trouble processing. I’m pretty sure Jerry actually covered that one, but I guess she missed the show that day. TiVo hadn’t been invented yet, just in case you’re wondering. Trust me, if it had, she’d have been all over that.

This opening quote and the publisher’s blurb that says, “So begins this heartwarming, speculative tale…”, made me think that My Alien Life would be a weird and mindless story to listen to while I got some chores done. But it’s not weird (I don’t know what “speculative” is supposed to mean in this case.) Telling the story of a little girl who was abandoned by her mother, and then taken in by an aged relative after her father died, this is a really sweet novella about building family and making meaning from the seasons of planting and growing on a small patch of North Carolina dirt. Written by J. Martain and engagingly narrated by April Doty in a smooth Southern drawl, this made me smile; I only wish it was longer. This isn’t my idea of great literature, but it was a better story than I had been expecting, so I’m giving it four stars for the entertainment value of what it is. (Note: I listened to an audio-ARC through NetGalley and passages quoted may not be in their final forms.)

Aunt Magnolia held up one wiry, knobby hand and the babble stopped. God bless her.
“Child, how old are you?”
“Nine.”
“Think you can handle yourself by sixteen?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Then I can stay alive seven more years. Come on. I wanna be home by dusk.”
And so I went to live with Great-great-aunt Magnolia Rose McClennan, the older sister of my mother’s great grandmother.

Lynette did love her Daddy — if not his cooking — so when he suddenly died when she was nine, she had no idea what would become of her. Enter Great-great-aunt Magnolia, “Aunt Mags”, six foot tall if she can straighten herself to full height; a straight-talking, “greens” growing, noted seamstress, and the only relative stepping forward to take in little Lynette. The audiobook is only about an hour long, so while there are a couple of setbacks and dramatic obstacles, this is mostly a feel good story about these two characters getting to know and love one another as they garden their patch, collect stray cats, and always keep their promises to one another. And that was more than worth an hour of my time.

This was charming. I was enjoying the view of southern life from a slightly alien perspective. The pronunciation of Southern slang was spot on in the audiobook version which I was listening to. The setting was quaint, and the paternal figures and even minor characters were memorable and likable. I was having a good time as the story began.

Then it ended. What? I checked and double checked. There were the credits right there after these 4 chapters. No story had happened yet. I would really describe these first four chapters as a backstory that covers the early years of the main character’s life before getting to the main actual story, where Stuff Happens. But no.

This audiobook is 1 hr long, so maybe 8,000 words or so. It would have felt more accurate to call it a short story.

More to the point there needed to be more of a clear rising and falling action with resolution (plot) in order to feel like a cohesive complete story. I guess this could be called a coming of age story. There is one transformative event that happens toward the end. But there just isn’t enough conflict or rising tension.

But here’s the thing: I was thoroughly enjoying myself before it ended. Maybe the author just needs to keep writing?

One more thing: there needs to be more alien-ness in something called My Alien Life.

I received an ARC copy of this thanks to NetGalley. I don’t think that has materially affected my review.

My Alien life was marvellous short story , it was about a young girl who's life was in turmoil, on the day of her fathers funeral her great aunt showed up ,and life again flowed along at a slow pace .
They had made a promise to each other , that she would look after the girl until she was 16 years old then she would leave this world .
They had gone through a lot of stuff together gardening sewing , and talking a lot to each other , and they also nearly had to fight the government to keep this arrangement in place , but with help from the Deputy she managed to keep the girl and live happy for the remainder of time .
This story was touching and heartfelt , and I fell in love with it , the meaning of family no matter how old you are , means a lot if they want to be part of your life .
I will give this another read someday , as I feel it could be re read often .
Family , love , rights , loss, help and tears , and a little bit of strangeness were all parts of this story .
5*and well recommended

A sweet novella about a young girl and her great aunt that took her in after her father transitioned.

She gives the girl hope and love and lessons.

They make a pact - very bittersweet.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Beautifully written.

My only main issue with short stories is that I always want them to turn into novel so I can stay with the characters longer and get deeper into their thoughts.

This is what happened here with Lynette, but also (and even more so) with Aunt Mag.

To conclude, and as you might have guessed, I did enjoy reading this novelette, and will definitely follow the author and her work.

I received a complimentary electronic copy of this excellent novelette from BookSirens, author J. Martain, and Reserved Seat Press. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me. I have read My Alien Life of my own volition. and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. I am pleased to add Ms. Martain to the readers that I follow. She writes a fine tale that grabs your emotions and you find yourself reading into the night. This is very much a 'feel good' tale.

Lynette is raised by her father when her mother abandons them while she is very young. They rub along together fairly well, though his cooking could be better. An automobile mechanic, he works at an auto shop and moonlights at a boat motor repair shop but they get by. And then when she is but nine years old, he dies. There are no plans for what Lynette will do in a situation like that. She has no idea where her mother even is, and most of the maternal relatives that come to her father's funeral don't have any interest in taking on the raising of someone else's child. The only relative her father had left was his mother, very old and fragile. Then she meets Magnolia Rose McClellan. Great Great Aunt Mag is old, too, but far from fragile.

This short story was a wonderful little tale of love and family. When Lynette’s mother was abducted by aliens, it didn’t compute with her. So she left.

The tale follows Lynette’s childhood as she is raised by first her father, then her elderly aunt. The characters in this novella were very well developed and real. I loved the thought that was obviously put into making sure each character’s voice was heard.

I enjoyed all the sass that both Lynette and Aunt Meg use daily. The love between them was wonderful to read.

The tale is short and able to be read on a quick break from daily life. I greatly recommend this heartwarming story.

"My Alien Life" is a story that captivated me from the very beginning. The narrative revolves around a child who goes through several traumatic family situations. As the protagonist grows, the story takes us on an emotional journey filled with small details that enrich the experience.

I immensely enjoyed this book. It was a charming novella that skillfully presented the story in an engaging and emotional way. The narrative managed to convey a range of emotions that held me captive from the beginning to the end. I was particularly captivated by the protagonist's development and the affectionate relationship she developed with her aunt. It's admirable how the author created such authentic and captivating characters.

However, I would have liked to have known more about what happened after the story's conclusion. I was curious about what awaits the protagonist. Does the author plan a continuation? That's something I would certainly love to read (or in this case, listen to, as it was an audiobook).

I want to express my gratitude to the book's publisher and the NetGalley website for making this audiobook available. The opportunity to engage with this story was truly appreciated.

In summary, "My Alien Life" is an engaging and emotional read that I would recommend to all lovers of captivating and well-written stories.

"My Alien Life" é uma história que me cativou desde o início. A narrativa gira em torno de uma criança que passa por várias situações traumáticas na sua família. À medida que a protagonista cresce, a história leva-nos numa jornada emocional, repleta de pequenos detalhes que enriquecem a experiência.

Gostei imenso deste livro.

I loved this novelette. The narrator’s voice made me smile with all the southernisms, and I just felt so good (in these hard, disagreeable times) reading about two women who have things go just the way they want them to. The writing was snappy and the story moved quickly, quite in keeping with the characters of both Lynnette and her Aunt Mag, the latter teaching the former her wholesome, no-nonsense way of life. What a joy to read about integrity, respect, and promised that are kept.

A wonderful and heartwarming book. If you like stories about growing up and bonding, this is the book for you. It was very calming, while still being interesting. And the audiobook reader was perfectly suited to the narrative. I finished it in one day, and was quite satisfied with the story.

My main complaint of this book is that the allusion to aliens isn’t really connected with. There are two, maybe three lines referencing the potential of alien involvement. If you want a scifi book, or any deep resonating themes, this isn’t the book. But if you want a nice afternoon read about found family and coming of age set in the American South, then I highly recommend this book.

This was a sweet little book about life and loss and love. The main characters are Lynette and her Aunt Magnolia, who takes her in after her father dies and her mother leaves. Lynette is 9 when the story begins and she and her aunt have an agreement that if she does as she is told, her aunt will take care of her until she is 16, and theoretically, then old enough to no longer need adult care. The story covers that 7 year slice of life and in the simpleness of that existence, you glean the joy and love in the relationship between the characters.

It is bittersweet, because you learn that the aunt is much older than what Lynette believes. I will not ruin anything by revealing spoilers.

This is going to seem a strange analogy, but this is what it made me think of. We adopted a Great Dane, when she was almost a year old. Knowing that Great Danes are called the "heartbreak breed," due to their short lifespans, we pretty much knew that our time with her would never be as long as we wanted it to be. And we WERE heartbroken when she left us, all too soon. But having experienced that love and the joy of that relationship, I would not trade it in order to avoid the pain. This story put me in mind of that.

I will say that I did not understand the ending. That did not prevent me from enjoying the rest of the story, however.

Another book from NetGalley , this is my honest review of this short story . The narrator was really great doing the voices of the characters — the characters are so lovely I would love to read more about these characters . For a short story — it quickly draws you in and gets you invested in the story . I find the great aunt really reminded me of my great grandmother who I grew up with — so I could relate a bit to the situation. This is a great story of community and neighbors supporting each other and how getting to grow up with older generations can be helpful to learning and growing an understanding of the world and others . I asked my grandmother to make a similar promise as they made in the book — what a lovely story of family and community— I could only hope the author would write whole novel about these characters ! Loved it !

I appreciate an author who can write a good short novella, and My Alien Life by J. Martain is a great example of a well-written, captivating. I was drawn into the relationships between Lynette and her father and then her Aunt Meg. The setting and story reminded me of my favorite book when I was a teenager - A Girl Named Sooner.
L. Martain depicts the setting and use of language/southern accent beautifully.
My Alien Life wasn't one of those novellas where you're left thinking, "Boy, if this were a novel, I could learn more about this or that" because My Alien Life gives you everything packed perfectly in a box with a bow.

This little story is such a gem! Made me cry and laugh so hard at multiple parts. Lovable characters and such distinctive southern energy. It's one of the best short stories / novelettes (I always get the terms confused, lol) I've ever read. The alien plotline is integral to the structure of the narrative but the focus is on the human aspects, which wasn't what I expected going in and was executed very well.

What a great coming-of-age short story and an easy listen while I tended to my own small garden on this beautiful summer day!
It left me wanting more. The narrator was easy to listen to and matched the overall feel of the book. Don’t let the title scare you away if you aren’t into extraterrestrials. Ha!
This is my first exposure to J.Martain, but I will be searching for more. This book reminded me of the simple southern, but thoughtful, writing of Joshilyn Jackson. I really enjoyed it.

What an odd little (audio)book. I ended it slightly confused, but that’s not a negative comment on the story, which I loved.

The narrator was perfect for the sentiment of the book and the story told was of a lifetime of love lived in so few words.

I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone that wants to enjoy an uplifting tale and be left feeling all warm and fuzzy in spite of the ending which should probably have left the reader feeling saddened which would have been completely the wrong emotion to leave the book with.

Absolutely beautiful story. It's very short, I'd definitely describe it as a short story rather than a novella, but it's perfect nonetheless.
