Sixteen-year-old Alyssa Brooks is a high-school outcast who doesn't realize that she's living in a world where magic is very real and a dire threat to anyone not possessing the power to harness it.
But everything changes when Alyssa moves into Magnorium, a school for strange supernaturals called Elementals. As Alyssa adjusts to this new life, she learns of the Society, a powerful group of Elementals dedicated to cleansing the earth of its mortal population.
Alyssa soon discovers her own truth and power and becomes something greater than she could have imagined - or the Society could have feared. As the only ones brave enough to stop the Society, Alyssa and her three friends set off on a journey, with the future of humanity hanging in the balance. Will Alyssa be strong enough to carry the burden of the world, or will she break under the strain?
Alessia Dickson is the award-winning author of The Crystal Chronicles series. Alessia is a motivational speaker working to inspire students to read and write to their full potential.
Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, spends her time dancing, exploring new coffee shops, and booking last minute flights to anywhere.
First of all, I know this is her first book and she was 16 when she wrote it, but it won't stop me from saying that it was a let down. She came to our school once and had stated that this was a combination of three series: The Last Airbender, Percy Jackson, and Harry Potter.
I understand that ideas get reused nowadays, but when your plot ideas draw parallels with other stories and you have no original ideas, it's a pain to get through.
Alyssa makes the bathroom pipes explode: that's Percy Jackson. Alyssa learns about Orchins who can control the four elements: The Last Airbender. Alyssa attends Magnorium: Harry Potter.
Also, her grammar is horrendous. She forgets words sometime. For instance:
Page 5: "Remind me again why I deserve to sit in front of the worst human being on the face of planet."
"Face of planet."
Does that make any sense to you? It happens at other times too. In addition to that, she has not idea where to put commas. An example of this is when her father is talking to her and at the end of the sentence, it says:
"...fine at Magnorium Alyssa."
Where's the comma? This implies that Alyssa is part of the school name. I wouldn't be so picky about this if it was once, but she constantly forgets to put commas in places such as before a name. It changes the sentence 's meaning.
Note: These are all the errors I've found before chapter 4.
The beginning of the story was horrible. It's your average school setting with the mean girl. I had to force myself to get past that.
The ending of this story kills me as well. Kurt telling the Tracker that these are the strongest Elementals he's ever seen comes off as unbelievable. You expect me to believe that these are the four most powerful anyone's ever seen?
This book is a mess. It's practically fanfics job. Even the main character's name, Alyssa, is clearly a play off on the author's name, Alessia.
Overall, highest score I can give this book is 1/5.

This book was amazing! It is by far the best book I have ever read. Alessia Dickson came to my school and talked to me all about the book. At first I wasn't so sure how the book would be; since she is a teen Author and everything; and she left me wanting to read every single book. This book is very similar to the Harry Potter series, and the Hobbit series. It's a great series and I highly recommend it for ages 10-15. I can't wait for the next 4 books to come out and I really hope they create a movie series off of it because honestly, who wouldn't like it!
For fans of young adult fantasy, this is both a treat and something brand new. The world that Alessia Dickson has created is poetic, magical and inviting. I've never read a fantasy book that encompassed the natural elements (earth, wind, fire and water) and this gives the book more of a magical realism edge. Alyssa is a strong protagonist, unlike many of the other reluctant male YA heroes, Alyssa Brooks is tough, caring and intelligent! Dickson is clearly a gifted writer, publishing this award winning book at the age of sixteen. I can't wait to see where this series goes :)
This book takes a new twist on magic and creates a world where real life issues are viewed in an alternative light. This book is lighthearted and fun and the perfect read for young adults.
While you can read this to past the time, if I was looking for a good book to recommend this would not be one. There are constant grammatical errors and not to mention most of the plot has been taken from text like Avatar the Last Airbender, Percy Jackson, and Harry Potter and so much of the story is cliche and has been used hundreds of times before in other books. To put simply, it's cringy.
I just finished reading and this is an amazing book with a great story line and captivating characters. If you love Fantasy and adventure this is a must read book. It has it all, loveable characters, intrigue, magic, friendship, and a really interesting plot that keeps you reading and engaged as if you are part of the journey. Can’t wait to read the 2nd book!
THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. it was just too pg for me, but definitely a great book. Good for if you want something that is amazing and can read in front of your parents
I thought this book was new and exciting and it had everything I love in a book. I love the storyline, I fell in love with the characters and this new world is amazing. The elemental idea is incredible. There are people (known as elementals) that have the power to control and thrive in an element that they are born into. Magnorium (the Hogwarts of the world) is a strange new place where the protagonist is struggling to find herself. The only thing I yearn more for is romance. Hopefully, in the following books in the series, there will be romance. This book I have to say is a breathtaking first instalment in The Crystal Chronicles series.
I love The Crystal Chronicles with all of my heart. The Crystal Chronicles is a mix of everything I love. If you're looking for a book that is different than your everyday magic and adventure, then this is your book to read. The Crystal Chronicles are so full of life, and I love the characters. I've read The Crystal Chronicles three times now, and I would definitely recommend reading this book.
