Divar Stockton isn’t supposed to exist. The Bane brothers were supposed to be the only remaining bear shifters on earth, but they aren’t. There is an entire clan of them in hiding, and Divar has escaped his people in an attempt to survive, and maybe, just maybe, learn how to be a good man from Krome’s rag-tag Crew of misfits. His inner animal has different plans though. Hunt, hunt, hunt—that’s all he thinks about, all he cares about, all he wants, and it makes it impossible to control the grizzly inside of him. A chance-meeting with a beautiful security guard on one of his hunts will change his life forever. She has shifters circling her, but why? She’s just a human, but she’s drawing out the predators from the shadows, and Divar’s bear starts thinking about something else for the first time in his existence. He wants to protect her from the animals that are hunting her. He doesn’t know much about being a good man, but he can do this—he can make his life mean something for someone else.
Ruby Daughtry knows monsters exist. She’s seen them in the jail she works at, but when a man with strange-colored eyes begins showing up at her work, she needs to know more about him. She knows what he is, and she could use a friend with a strong back and sharp teeth right about now. Something is in her woods, and Divar might be just the person to give her advice on what to do. The closer she gets to him, the more she realizes shifters aren’t what she thought. Simple days don’t exist for men like Divar, and the deeper she dives into his world, the farther away her old, safe life seems to be. She’s feeling alive for the first time in a long time, but the danger that excites her could also be her demise.
A new Crew is rising, and sacrifices must be made to end this war in the epic finale of T. S. Joyce’s bestselling Oath of Bane series. Buckle up, ladies and gents…the bear shifters dragged us into this adventure, and they will take us right to the very end.
Content Explicit love scenes, naughty language, and piles of sexy shifter secrets. Intended for mature audiences.
T.S. Joyce is devoted to bringing hot shifter romances to readers. Hungry alpha males are her calling card, and the wilder the men, the more she'll make them pour their hearts out. She werebear swears there'll be no swooning heroines in her books. It takes tough-as-nails women to handle the shifters of Bear Valley.
She lives in a tiny town, outside of a tiny city, and devotes her life to writing big stories. Foodie, bear whisperer, ninja, thief of tiny bottles of awesome smelling hotel shampoo, nap connoisseur, movie fanatic, and zombie slayer, and most of this bio is true.
Bear Shifters? Check Smoldering Alpha Hotness? Double Check Sexy Scenes? Fasten up your girdles, ladies and gents, it's gonna to be a wild ride.
The books in this series are slightly darker than most of TS Joyce’s other books, and she’s all for broken pasts and terrible situations. Divar is slowly losing his mind as his bear takes over and becomes the more dominant side of his personality when Ruby steps into his life. I don’t love the lore surrounding this series as much as some of her other books; I prefer my love interest to be somewhat less murder-y and likely to be up on assault charges, and the purple smoke crows has always been a bit much; but this was still a fun book. It’s full of the usual banter and flirting and socially inept shifters who try, but just seems to highlight how they never truly fit elsewhere in the process. I wasn’t ready for the end of this series, but I knew it was coming since it’s already longer than most of the other shifter sets. Ruby and Divar were such a great couple. At first he seemed like more baggage than she deserved, but they just fit and I was cheering behind them. Nice little HEA, hopefully we get some crossovers in the future!
Grizzly shifter Divar doesn't think he should be alive, there's a monster living in him that he can't control. He joins Krome's crew of misfits in the hopes of being put out of his misery by the Bane brothers supposedly the last of their kind and killers. What he hadn't counted on was that the Bane brothers aren't killers and Ruby.
His grizzly needed to kill and who better than convict women abusers, so he hangs out at the jail where all convicts are brought, but for some reason he can't do it. When he is approached by the gorgeous cop that he's seen at the jail, he realizes that she is the reason his grizzly won't kill, and he remains so quiet when she is around.
Could this be the rehabilitation that Divar has needed all his life, or will his grizzly snap all of a sudden, and put Ruby in danger?
How it needed to be is the final story in this Oath of Bane series and it was certainly a bit different but in a great and unique way❣️
Divar up until now has been a complete mystery but when you discover what his animal is, it makes a whole lot more sense😉 Ruby is the perfect mate for Divar and even though she’s entertaining, she’s also surprising😁
A great story to start off the new year with and I can’t wait for the spin off from this one🤩
So this series had broken heroes and strong heroines. I loved the thread of choosing your family, and more importantly, choosing your own destiny, that runs throughout the series.
These are feel good quick reads that never disappoint.
I have enjoyed TS Joyce’s books for at least 5 years. Some I prefer to others as is to be expected, but the recent foray into crocodiles, bulls, dragons, pegasi, et al are…odd.
The entire AU that Ms. Joyce established in her earlier series and carried over from bears to lions, panthers, and crows has abruptly changed and there is little continuity as each new series reinvents the shifter wheel. The crocodile series introduced voodoo black magic. The Bulls series has violent human extremist groups that coordinate terrorist attacks on shifters. In this series, bear shifters are no longer hard-working and instead are cruel, violent, blood-thirsty man-eating creatures that must be killed and the crew veterinarian uses an unnamed FILSA-equivalent drug to put Ruby’s wolf to sleep.
All-in-all, these books are shadows of Ms. Joyce’s previous writing with characters are as thinly drawn as the plots. Frankly, I couldn’t even finish the Halloween holiday book.
An Addictively Stunning Tale but Lacking a Larger Conclusion…
Before I begin, I want to preface things by saying T.S. Joyce’s “The Oath of Bane” series was my absolute favorite shifter series of 2021! It was one of only four series I awarded top honors to on my SadtCookie 2021 year in review list. Each book within this series was phenomenal; all poignant, emotionally intelligent, and completely heart pounding. It is, in my opinion, one of the best shifter series ever written! However, here with, “How It Needed to Be”, Joyce’s eighth and final installment, I was left disappointed at the lack of overall conclusion to the huge and far reaching Bane saga.
The story world created within this series is absolutely phenomenal. The characters contained within each and every book, stunningly addictive. With her gripping story of the final outstanding member of the crew, Joyce once again does not disappoint. Here she gives us the tale of Divar, the intense and seemingly out of control grizzly shifter, the man within Krome’s new crew (beyond the dragon) everyone is most concerned about. He is a man lost, desperate to change his fate of losing control over his animal, becoming a viscous killing machine that ultimately must be put down. And Ruby, the self-assured prison guard. A woman full of grit, determination, endless kindness, and deep emotional insight who sees Divar for what he really is. When their paths cross at the prison where she works, they are put on a road that will forever change them both. A journey in which her past kindness toward an inmate in need will put lives in peril and change her life, as well as Divar’s and the lives of all within the crew forever.
What follows is a forceful story of redemption and second chances. A story of overcoming fear and meeting challenges head on regardless of the consequences, and it is truly wonderful. This final story in the Oath of Bane series is a suspense filled, heart pounding, will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, type of book. So enthralling is Divar and Ruby’s tale, you will find yourself screaming at the pages in an attempt to warn them both away from danger. And will absolutely melt emotionally at the care and love growing between them. However, despite being a richly entrancing story of this particular couple, it was not at all what I was expecting for the final book of the series. This one felt hollow, lacking general closure for the crew and story world in general, and overall, a bit of a letdown.
Despite loving the book, I have to admit I was expecting more of an overreaching conclusion to the entire Bane series saga. Instead, what we are given here is a very in-depth view of this particular couple, along with an unexpected but extremely welcomed expanded role of the female protagonist Ruby. And while I was thrilled to get a fuller view of the last member of Krome’s crew, I would have liked to have seen a more in-depth conclusion to the many macro level hardships and dangers swirling around the crew in general (such as the crows still lurking and seeking the end of them all). Sadly, there were several loose ends left flailing and I was left with a rather large feeling of, “Is that it? What about the crows, and the humans, and the…”
It does appear that Joyce is moving on to a spinoff of the Bane’s which will feature the wolves from the pack featured in this book. Perhaps (hopefully) that will mean a continued revisiting to Bane’s mountain and Krome's crew of misfits. I have come to crave and adore these characters, and am desperate for answers to the outstanding questions remaining in my mind.
I’m sad this is the last book in the Oath of Bane series but so thrilled I finally got Divar’s story. It was a great story with a few interesting twists. I like how the ‘crazy’ wolves are introduced, in a way we found heart-melting sweet. Then, CHOMP! We realize the wolves are somewhat crazy and not as sweet as we once thought….
After this fantastic conclusion to the Bane series, we are headed into a new series, which features a wolf from Divar’s book. While I’m not a huge fan of the wolves right now, I can always count on TSJ to tell their story and make me fall in love with them.
FYI…. Book 1 of Oath of Bane series was my first ever TSJ story and it was absolutely insta-love for me! 😉
While waiting on the release of Book 2, I immediately went back to the beginning and started to read through EVERY SINGLE SERIES by TSJ, in order. Whew! That’s ALOT of books but every single one feels new and fresh! Although every single one causes me tears at some point in the story, they each build off one another so you never have to truly say goodbye to any of the characters cause they are always popping back up in other books. YAY!!!!
Lovely conclusion to this series. Here was my favorite line from the MFC,
“What do you need?” “Six weeks of vacation, a deep tissue massage, a million bucks, and someone to applaud me every time I do the slightest thing right.”
I especially like that last one. Also, this paragraph seemed really well said: about how life changes once we learn certain things,
“Because then I’ll be alone.” “You have family. You have friends.” “That’s not what I mean.” “What do you mean, then?” he asked, confused. “I figured out werewolves really exist, and I’ll take that to my grave. How can I go back to understanding my world again? It doesn’t really exist.”
I felt like this series was constantly addressing loneliness - people who were the only one of their kind, or didn't feel like they ever belonged, misfits. So they made up their own place in the world, their own community.
I love Joyce...I really do. The only thing I didn't like about this book was that I wanted it in November and didn't get it till December. (Now let's just pause here for a moment, holidays + working the ranch + plague + other life stuff, I understand why things take longer than expected so absolutely no shade.)
When I first met Divar I wasn't sure I'd like him...like Amos I was squinting at him like...I mean okay. (I'll forever be fond of the crows with a soft spot for the bears and wolves as a close second.) But this really did it for me. I loved his lady and her effect on him...like I really do with all of her characters. The sass was yes. And the whole wolf pack thing, I DID NOT see it going there, but if that means more books (spinoffs) then I'm here for it. Still what a dick.
Divar and Ruby's story is definitely one of my favorites in the series. People will fall in love with Divar for he is broken and willing to do what he needs to do in order to not be his past. This includes hunting the bad and while doing this he sees the little prison guard. He had no idea what she would come to mesn to him.
Ruby, reminds me of one of my favorite characters from this author, and that is Willa. Ruby had me laughing just as Willa had done several years ago and one of this authors earlier series.
The story truly gave me all the feels. I had my laugh out loud moments, my serious moments and even those moments that made me choke up. Bravo to this author, I have all of her series and even though the past couple of years her stories have been still great... I was missing a character like Willa and Ruby embodied her in so many ways that truly made me laugh and smile.
I really liked the characters in this series and this book specifically but the storylines are repetitive. This whole series felt really rushed and almost formulaic.
I follow this author on social media and I am aware that she's been going through some stuff recently. This series seems like it's a combination of her attempts to document her success in overcoming her struggles and also her attempt to straight up make some money fast to cover some of the bills that were involved in that.
There was a sentence in this book that was an exact copy/paste from the previous book and that screamed "rush it out the door and into the market" to me.
She writes family connections really well. I love the way she writes kids and the interactions adults have with kids. I would have liked to have experienced that more.
Grizzly Divar Stockton’s job as clan enforcer was taking it’s toll on his psyche, hoping whatever ‘magic’ the Bane brothers found would work for him, Divar joined Krome’s misfit crew to help settle his bear. Having seen prison guard Ruby Daughtry once, Divar couldn’t stop visiting the prison just to catch a glimpse of her.
After helping a wolf who asked to be in solitary every month, Ruby correctly guessed about shifters. When she began seeing Divar near the prison, she made it her business to become friendly with him. When the wolf died, his pack vowed to look after her until their debt was paid, that included wolves following her while she was out with Divar. By the time Ruby realizes she’s quite the bone of contention between Divar and the wolves, drastic action has been taken. Rating: 3.5stars
TS Joyce has my heart, with each and every addition to her writing library. These boys and girls are flawed. They have issues, and even as they know them, their hearts pine for their mates. J And those mates? They are so very important. They provide balance to shifters who are broken. Are in pain. Are just about ready to k up.
But TS Joyce gives us, and them, 1010 reasons to become better-to find the missing pieces of themselves, and trust. Trust that there is a reason behind it all.
Divan and Ruby are the latest couple to become part of this ‘chicken-whisperer’s’ crew. Each story I read becomes my favorite, and How It Needed to Be is no exception..until I read her next.
Divar Stockton is the last of this series. He has been going to the jail to watch Ruby a deputy when she is on duty. He sees an inmate being release spit on her and jumps out of the truck to assault the released inmate. Ruby gets him to stop since the cameras can record the incident. Ruby knows that monsters exist and asked Divar to come to her home on a Friday and 10:00PM. He just shows up against his better judgement. It seems Ruby had a former inmate that was a wolf; his family comes every Friday to her woods. Divar realizes that it is wolf shifters, and they are not to be trusted. Love the story of Divar and Ruby.
I still love this author and her humour in her writing.the funny banter is just so funny your like "what" but laughing out loud. This is book 8 and I think it's the last of this series, first we had the bears finding mates then it was the crows plus a few add ons shifters like Dragon nuke.but this book introduced the wolves who live close by and T S Joyce is very good at turning the bad guys into good ones, doing something bad for a good reason or just out of control because of there Animal it will be interesting to see how that turns out. so I noticed there is a spin of series with them.
Man love Davar story, someone so scarred made a right about turn and change his life forever. Ruby, sweet Ruby loved how things turned out for her. I just love how she stood up to that Alpha bitch, told they off and cut ties with them. They never expected that lol, loved it, Krome made a good choice when he picked Divar for his Third, Ruby couldn't be any prouder of her mate..loved it. Now on to the wolves, I bet Ruby's rejection had some effect on Delpan. Now how could he do something like that and expect Ruby would be alright with it..big fool, well can't wait to read his story...big fan as always Winzie19 🤗💞.
Divar has a thing for Ruby. He's been watching her for sometime and finally he's caught her attention. Little did he know that his stalking...pursuing of her would lead to a life he'd never thought would happen.
Ruby is drawn to Divar from the start. She realizes that they have similarities and decides they should become friends. Then she realizes there's a lot more going on between them.
This is a poignant story that will have you feel the emotions the characters do. This book packs a walloping punch of emotion! Loved this story and these characters!
What a wonderful last book in this series! Divar was a previous unknown..other than he is a fighter. I loved getting to know more about his struggles now and his previous life. Ruby is quite the girl and the perfect one at that for Divar! I loved her spirit and kindness.
We also get some great times with the crew in here. Most all are included and even some of the bears. I really enjoyed this series and while its bittersweet to say goodbye to them, I love the idea of the spin off series coming!
Wow! Loved it from the beginning to the end. There was not doll moments with this crazy, mismatch crew!!!! Is unbelievable how Divar & Amos fight + a dragon who's always threatened to eat them. 😅😅😅😅🤣🤣🤣🤣 what a hilarious story about the rabbit's funeral!!!! 🤣🤣😂😂😂😂 I was wheezing when I finished reading it!!!! Excellent book. I recommend this book but you have to read from the 1st book to get a complete picture of what happened to them and who they are!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍👍👍👍😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
I have read this entire series. This book was so touching due to so many emotional times. Divar had been cast aside from his bear clan because they said he was wrong because he excelled at the job that they forced upon him. Divar’s blood family is just plain wrong. Ruby is a kind person with a warm heart. She sees the good in Divar that he does not. Ruby is determined to care and befriend Divar, but he is only about the hunt. Will Ruby be successful? Read On!
It has been a while since I read a TS Joyce novel and I’m loving getting back into things. I loved Divar and Ruby’s story and especially, how it was couched within the story of the crew (Amos pulled so many laughs from me that I just have to read his story again because he rocks). The romance is slow but poignant, there is a bit of action but the emotion, especially from Divar is well done, especially given how short this story is. I can’t wait to delve into the wolves next!
This one brought about the series to a good close. I liked how Ruby was smitten with Divar and even knew a secret about him. Her story of how she found out about shifters was good and bad. I thought it was great how she was being looked after, but then what was done in "protection" of her pissed me off. I loved how Ruby was so strong from the start and she took care of business herself until Divar got there. The ending was sweet, loved how the two of them settled into something good.
We have another crew member finding his mate, this time is Divar, the other grizzly. We finally learn how it is possible for another grizzly besides the Banes to exist, and find a few more secrets about his kind. His mate is an admirable woman, that has to go through some hard situations before being able to be with him. What I like the most about the series, and T. S. Joyce's books in general, is that the characters are not perfect, they have flaws and make mistakes and have to overcome different situations. Despite all the magic and the fact that they are part animals, the characters are very real, they feel unique, and crazy and oddly relatable. We have people fighting their inner demons and finding that even if they are not perfect, they are perfect for someone, and that even broken people can help others to mend their broken edges. With them is not about being perfect, but being the right person their mates. This is a book I will definitely recomend and that I truly enjoyed.
T.S. Joyce has done it again - gifted her readers with a story of lost souls finding thier broken, but perfect match. Then, doing the hard work it takes to find thier happy ending. The title says it all, Divar and Ruby are who they needed to be and thier love story is amazingly, imperfectly, perfect. I could not put it down once I started reading it and I am sure I will pick it up again soon to reread it.
Loved the whole story! Minus the whole Ruby monster part. Sorry they should have all died at least the ones who were involved in that horrible change. I get why Ruby did it however what will stop them from doing it to someone else. I love trailer 1010! I want that trailer minus the mouse! Lol the crew makes my heart happy. I love the way T.S. Joyce writes a story!
