What if legends, myths, and superstitions … were all true?

Antares de la Vega is an adventurer at heart. He dreams of journeying across burning deserts, trekking through wild and uncharted jungles, sailing the farthest reaches of the seas—and yet, he’s never stepped foot outside of South Florida. Until strange creatures come leaping out of lightning bolts to kidnap him.

Locked away in a secret prison in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle, Antares meets Magdavellía, a mysterious and iron-willed girl who opens his eyes to a shocking This world is a far different—and weirder—place than he’s been led to believe. Every strange rumor, every wild theory, is based on truth.

After they escape the prison, Antares and Magdavellía must set out beyond the edges of any map in search of a legendary artifact—and Antares’s parents, who have been missing most of his life. The two of them must wield geometry and alchemy, outsmart molemen and mermaids, and outrun fiendish aliens … all while attempting to solve a riddle as old and mystifying as the sun.

1. This entire synopsis sounds amazing!
2. A Middle Grade protagonist who is 14? I guess 14-year-olds really have been shoved out of YA. This is not a slam of the book, just bizarre because like 10 or so years ago, 14-year-olds would've been YA protagonists.

Wow! I was excited for this book when I first saw the cover and read the synopsis and even more excited when I was approved for an early reader copy of the ebook. Reading this as an adult, I’m obviously not the target audience but I really loved it and it reminded me of when I first read A Wrinkle in Time or The Neverending Story as a kid. I had that sense of wonder and excitement and didn’t want to put it down. There are definitely subtle nods to great fantasy and science fiction in here so I have a feeling the author enjoyed books like that when he was young too. How amazing to get to create something like that for a new generation!?

I don’t want to give anything away because there are many twists and turns and reveals and while it starts in our world it definitely doesn’t stay there or follow any rules. I loved the pacing and action sequences. I felt like I could see it like it would be in a movie (hopefully someday it will be its own) and there is lots of it as well. The world that the author created is wonderful quirky and strange and makes you wish you could be there with Antares and Magdavellia and the rest. Antares’ narration brings humour at times with his asides, which I loved. He also plays the part of the reader who is completely confused in this new world and asks the questions or thinks the things you are thinking.

I think this will be a well loved book in my home. One that you reread to pick up new details or just to live in this world for a little bit longer. I’m definitely looking forward to more in this series and will be checking out other books by the author since I enjoyed this one so much.

I received an advanced reader ebook copy of this book from Edelweiss and the publisher, Amulet Books, for my honest review.

The Shape of Time is an adventurous middle grade book that will ignite any readers imagination - young and old.
I was hooked from the first chapter and literally finished it in one day. Our MC deals with anxiety, and we are introduced to how he handles it. Antares yearns for an adventure, finding something more. I saw a piece of myself in Antares's character when he shared his love for books.

Not bound by time or space, an epic adventure awaits Antares as he and his newfound friend, Magdavellìa solve a riddle.
I had such a blast reading this book, and the illustrations just added to the reading experience. Once you pick up this book, you won't be able to put it down. Antares becomes like a best friend, and I think younger readers will definitely appreciate his character. I just know that this book will become an instant favorite for many readers, including myself. Do yourself a favor and add this book to your TBR!

⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
3.5/5 STARS

Genre: Middle Grade Science Fiction

I listened to this book on audio and thought the narrator was perfect for the middle grade age. It is about a boy who goes on an intergalactic quest and encounters all sorts of creatures. I liked the idea of the book, but found it a little confusing at times.. and I’m an adult. It reminded me a little bit of A Wrinkle in Time if it was written for middle graders. I think kids will connect with the book more.

Thank you to the publisher for the gifted copy!

As a long time fan of Ryan Calejo’s Charlie Hernandez series, I was thrilled to receive an arc of series opener, The Shape of Time. While far shorter than his “Charlie” books, there is no less depth to the thinking or the action and adventure of Antares and Magdavellia as they struggle to save not only the world as we know it, but also Rymworld, a part of Earth we cannot see. As with most fantasy books, the pace is fast, encounters with non-humans abound, as do chases and battles. Creativity also leaps off the page with new languages and descriptive words that aren’t real words but should be (i.e mindbafoggling, wondificent, breathiful, jumpsie/nervous), text fonts change and even swirl and move across the page in a fashion similar to concrete poetry. Add all this to two likable main characters and a few memorable supporting ones and mature middle grade readers plus younger YA will be clamoring for book 2. Text is free of traditional profanity, but I’m pretty sure that some of the non-English speaking beings may have let some words slip in their own tongues. There is no sexual content but Antares and Mags do have a mutual attraction and there may or may not be a kiss, only time will tell. There is violence/fighting but none of it is particularly graphic and is crucial to plot development.

Thanks for the print arc, Ryan!

EARC provided by Edelweiss Plus

Antares de la Vega lives in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami, Florida, with his aunt. His parents were professional cartographers whose boat tragically sank when he was a year old. He has panic attacks but loves his Aunt Celeste, and is very curious about the world around him. When he goes to school one day, things get very weird. Substitute teachers show up, but there's something wrong about them. Mr. Now, Mr. Minutes, and Mr. Hoursback aren't like normal subs, and Antares doesn't know what's going on. His friend Mikey is sad that he didn't see any of them, but when Mr. Now show up at Antares' door, things get even stranger! Soon, crocodilian creatures in raincoats are hauling him off in a shipping container to an island castle in the control of a warlord known as Mystic. He meets Zamanger and Magdavellia in the prison, and they help him gain the skills he needs to figure out Rymworld and find his parents.
Strengths: I was a big fan of L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, and Mr. Now and his accomplices certainly put me in mind of that adventure! Antares is a more modern hero with present day concerns; his anxiety and feeling of "not fitting in" will speak to many young readers. The island is well developed, and the training and figuring out of riddles reminded me a bit of the new Spellbinders by Auseon. The cover is fantastic, and the Latine heritage is great to see.
Weaknesses: Dormant powers, magical alternate universe, missing parents, and a quest make this pretty standard fantasy territory, but there are also "squishy molemen", which is new.
What I really think: This is a good choice for readers who like a good quirky orphan quest like Bing's Molly Moon, Sanderson's Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians or Bosch's The Name of this Book is Secret but want more of a science fiction feel.

The Shape of Time by Ryan Calejo

Fourteen-year-old Antares wants nothing more than to explore undiscovered realms and learn the secrets of the universe. When his schoolroom is highjacked by mysterious strangers who know his name and he finds himself on the run from unknown enemies, Antares is drawn into a world beyond his wildest imagination - the Rymworld. Transported from his home in South Florida to a secret prison inside the Bermuda Triangle, he finds a friend in fellow teen inmate Magdavellía. Working together, they are charged with a quest that will send them through space and beyond the edges of any map. Following clues left behind by Magdavellía’s parents, the young adventurers must find a mythical compass before their enemies use it to control the universe.

This book is a conspiracy theorist’s dream - in Antares’ reality, superstitions and speculations usually turn out to be true. There are secret societies, cults, aliens, molemen, mermaids…and the earth isn’t exactly round. From a world building standpoint, other reviewers have compared it to A Wrinkle in Time and The Chronicles of Narnia, and while I feel this novel has a younger writing style, those comparisons do have some merit. I was very aware that I am not the target audience - as an adult reader, I found some of the plot twists and instant romance a bit beyond the bounds of my suspension of disbelief. I also disliked the stylized text and the illustrations were underwhelming. The first thirty pages had me completely thrilled, but it went downhill from there and each new plot twist led to disappointment. However, I do think this book will engage younger readers. It’s a rollicking adventure with an energetic narrator, and I could easily see this becoming a series.

My thanks to Shelf Awareness and Abrams Books for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed the Charlie Hernández middle grade adventure series by @ryancalejo so I was thrilled to be sent The Shape of Time, the first book in his new Rymworld series.

I don't even know how to sum this one up, it is a madcap adventure about 14 year old Andares who has always dreamt of exploring beyond the confines of his life in Miami, and in a set of surprising circumstances, ends up getting that wish as he is drawn into a wild adventure across time and space, where everything he thought he knew about the world is pulled into question. There's robots, space travel, aliens, friends and foes, and even a chipmunk.

Calejo writes with a vibrant, playful effervescence that's just fun as heck. I wish I had even a fraction of his imagination. The short chapters and action packed pace make it very readable, and the reader truly never knows what will happen from one moment to the next.

This would be a great addition to any school library and I'd recommend to any middle grade reader who likes an imaginative and fast paced adventure story. Rick Riordan fans looking for a similar tone would do well to check this author out.

I liked the tricksy time stuff at the end and I will definitely pick up the next book!

I can confidently say that I have never read a book that combined geometry and science fiction… so well. The Shape of Time is an action-filled adventure novel meant for young readers, but written to where adults will also find themselves entirely entertained.

We start our story in the pits of hell… not really, but Florida has been called worse. Our MC, Antares, is ripped from the world he’s always known and sent into a prison in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle. This may seem like a horrible way to start a book: stuck in a jail cell with no way to get out. There are no parents to come and save him, but that’s definitely only the beginning.

On a journey through space and time, reuniting with his family is the only thing on his mind, Antares meets so many interesting and unforgettable characters that really make the story much more special. I found myself escaping the real world and exploring one with a flat Earth… yup. You heard me. Surrounded by ice, so we don’t just fall off. You won’t be forgetting that tidbit of info, now will you?😂

I really enjoyed this and even though I am not the intended age range to read it, I know so many kids who are going to love it.

5 adventurous stars!

Oh, this was some precious, hallucinating adventure! The Audiobook is just FANTASTIC!

This is exactly the kind of book and main character I love to read! It is the perfect combination of Sci-Fi and Fantasy and multicultural representation. Here are some reasons why you could love this book as much as I did:

- celestial vibes! The main character, Antares, is named after a star!
- Books, books, books, so much bookish love
- Astronomy, geometry, math... so much science.
- Mermaids AND aliens. My favorite two worlds: The ocean and the universe
- Astrology, fortune telling, conspiracy theories, and all the wonderful "obscure things."
- Hispanic rep: food, culture, all the latin love!
- Gaming

And here are some reasons to love Antares :

- EXPLORER! AND inquisitive, curious... just precious, a dreamer!
- Bookworm
- Hispanic, biracial, multicultural
- Anxiety and asthma rep,
- A male YA protagonist, those are rare nowadays!

Antares is kidnapped by weird beings that came out of a lightening bolt, and taken to a prison in the middle of the Bermuda triangle. He meets a girl his own age there who rocks his world by explaining to him that the early is indeed flat and that there is more than meets the eye out past the border. There is a whole other world out there called Rimworld. Rimworld is where time is kept and Rimworld in trouble as it is being attacked by a group that just wants to take time over for themselves and Antares and his friend must stop them.
This book has a interesting story line and great characters. If you like The phantom Tollbooth you will like this book as well. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

In this an alternate world story of a young man on a quest to locate his missing parents. The "earth" is flat and surrounded by ice. But there is a world outside that the "insiders" are not aware of. Another major feature of the novel is time warps (not specifically time travel) but there is "looping". Antares meets a wide variety of interesting and sometimes threatening characters along the way. Does he find his parents? What is their story?

This book was bizarre! The creative genius in these pages made me cheer inwardly with delight!
The wordplay was grand, especially the poetic directionality of certain phrases and paragraphs that angled

Antares was cluelessly brilliant, and he paired well with jailbreak buddy Mags.
From Chippie to Mr Now, the characters were weird but interesting. Rymworld is a cool creation.

I’d love to have Antares sense of direction. Where will it take him next?

I could not wait to get into this book as soon as I read the synopsis. I do not read middle grade very often but every once in a while one really gets my attention and I am so glad this one did. It was so much fun from the first page. This book was bizarre in the best ways and so adventurous. I listened to this one on audio and loved the narration, I cannot wait until I can get into the second one on audio as well.

Weird world, even Antares was weirded out 😂.
The rym worlders believe the world is round, weird right???. I know 😭 plus this novel has the myth of the Bremuda triangle and yes Antare was kidnapped and kept in a prison in the Bremuda triangle. I loved the freaking escape, it was like watching Jurassic world. There were flying dinosaur plus a biplane and space travel. The MC had a space flight without proper freaking gears 😭😭

I love Ryan Calejo’s books. Even though they are children’s books I enjoy them a lot. I actually listened to this book and the narration was great, all the different voices kept me interested. At the beginning I did feel the book was sort of slow but then you start getting all of these plot twists and you are hooked. I just hate his cliff hangers because now I need to wait for the new book…

Fast, fun, and best if you shelve your belief in reality while reading. The beginning reminded me vaguely of the Hitchhiker's Guide, but from then on, it was nonstop action through a nicely imagined world, peopled with a most unusual cast. Great fun for kids from ten to ninety-nine.

The ending was not expected at all. I loved pal, and the navigator.

This world is completely different from what I usually read. Made me wonder about the edge though.

Still not sure what happened to his parents.
