About the author

Burkhard Martens wurde 1962 in Nidersachsen geboren. Nach dem Studium der Verfahrenstechnik zog er 1989 nach Süddeutschland und fing mit dem Gleitschirmfliegen an. Mehrere Jahre arbeitete er als Ingenieur in der Umwelttechnik. Von '94 - '97 war er bei Gleitschirmherstellern angestellt. Bis 2003 war er Gleitschirmfluglehrer und Flugschulinhaber. Seitdem arbeitet er als freiberuflicher Fluglehrer, Journalist und Buchautor. 1998 machte er seinen Drachenschein.
Zehn Jahre flog er in der deutschen Gleitschirmliga, nahm an vielen Nationalen und internationalen Wettkämpfen und World-Cups teil. Er erflog mehrere Nationale und Weltrekorde, von denen einige noch aktuell sind.
Seine große Leidenschaft ist das Streckenfliegen. Nach zehn Jahren Teilnahme an der deutschen Streckenfulgmeisterschaft konnte er 2004 seinen Traum erfüllen: er gewann in der Sportklasse. Mittlerweil war er fünf Mal Deutscher Mesiter im Streckenfliegen. Mit 397 km hält er den Deutschen Rekord in "Freier Strecke" und das auf einem Chili von Skywalk. Das ist Weltbestleistung mit einem EN-B Schirm.
Im April 2007 kam "Das Schtreckenflugbuch für Gleitschirm- und Drachenflieger" heraus. Es wurde schon im ersten Jahr ebenfalls zum Bestseller. Bereist 2005 wurde Das Thermikbuch ins Russische übersetzt. 2007 wurde dann die 2. Auflage ins Englische übersetzt. Die englische Version diente als Vorlage für die Übersetzung in die japanische, chinesische, französische, spanische, portugiesische, polnische und italienische Sprache.

This book introduces several fundamental concepts for any free flight pilot looking to dip their toes into the world of Thermalling and XC flying. I'd wish the figures were more coherently organized as the book usually prompted you to go back several tens or even a hundred pages to look at an image the author is making reference to. Other than that, a must in any paraglider or hang glider pilot's shelf!

This book gives the pilot a proper mindset for understanding the many factors that influence thermal flying. It brings together concepts from different subjects and helps you think more clearly and systematically as you develop your thermalling skills. Throughout the book, you are often referred back to previous sections, which helps reinforce and expand on important ideas. Overall, it’s a valuable and practical guide for any pilot who wants to improve their thermal flying technique.

Great book about paragliding and thermal flying; prerequisit for cross-country flying. Book includes great photos and images. The narration of the book teaches a pilot how to think; interconecting various topics between chapters.
