Weapon of Fear: Weapon of Flesh, Book 4

Rate this book
Continuing the award-winning Weapon of Flesh series, this is Mya’s story.

One thrust of a dagger changed an empire.

Mya discovers that donning the Grandmaster’s ring does not make her master of the Assassins Guild, and won’t keep her safe from the machinations of those whose power she has curtailed.

The Tsing guildmaster refuses to pledge allegiance. The power-crazed priest, Hoseph, vows to see the Grandmaster’s ring on the finger of a new emperor of his own choosing. Meanwhile, the true heir to the throne ignites class warfare with his new policies, earning the enmity of his own nobility.

Alone in Tsing, a city simmering in intrigue and injustice, Mya struggles to overcome her ingrained fear and shattered heart to wrest control of the guild from those who view her as a usurper. But what chance does one woman have against an entire guild of assassins, much less a madman who can dissolve into shadow and kill with a touch?

The Hunter has become the hunted…

From the sea to the stars, Chris A. Jackson’s stories take you to the far reaches of the imagination. Raised on the back deck of a fishing boat and trained as a marine biologist, he became sidetracked by a career in biomedical research, but regained his heart and soul in 2009 when he and his wife Anne left the dock aboard the 45-foot sailboat Mr Mac to cruise the Caribbean and write fulltime.
With his nautical background, writing sea stories seemed inevitable for Chris. His acclaimed Scimitar Seas nautical fantasies won three consecutive Gold Medals in the ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year Awards. His Pathfinders Tales from Paizo Publishing combine high-seas combat and romance set in the award-winning world of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. Not to be outdone, Privateer Press released Blood & Iron, a swashbuckling novella set in the Iron Kingdoms.
Chris’ repertoire also includes the award-winning and Kindle best-selling Weapon of Flesh Series, the contemporary urban fantasy Dragon Dreams, as well as additional fantasy novels, the humorous sci fi Cheese Runners trilogy of novellas, and numerous short stories.

I loved the original trilogy with Lad, from that first book Weapon of Flesh I was instantly engrossed in the character of Lad and his journey from a boy with no shoes on the side of a road to Grandmaster and lethal assassin. But Lad is gone...enter Mya. I always liked Mya more than Wiggen. Some of the best scenes I thought in the series were when the two of them were together, from training in the first book to beating the pulp out of each other in the rain.

This book continues the great action from the original series and some characters return from the previous books. But Mya's life has changed, for better or worse she is now the Grandmaster of the Assassins. With no Lad to protect her, she's on her own to survive.

I like that we get more into the politics in this book, such a rich world has been created and we only barely got a glimpse of it before. If you had read the first three books, give this one a read - if you are a fan of fantasy you should check it out. But be sure to read the other three first! All four together are epic.

This is the first book of a second trilogy, following the Weapon of Flesh trilogy. I’m delighted to say that this new Weapon book is every bit as thrilling and suspenseful as the earlier books. Although this trilogy has a different protagonist and a different setting, the characters are just as fully developed and believable, and like the earlier books, the nonstop action will keep the reader engrossed and make the book difficult to put down. A new element in this book is the addition of street children, tough yet touchingly vulnerable, who provide elements both of humor and of poignancy. They present the chance to show us the softer side of the very tough female protagonist, Mya. Anyone who enjoys good, original, well-written fantasy will enjoy this book. And although it does have references to the people and events of the previous trilogy, it can be read without having read the preceding books. I recommend it highly.

What i think about this book? That its outstanding! I thought the series couldn't get any better, but i was pleasantly surprised. Mya is an even more interesting main character and Tsing an even better setting for the novel with lots of deception and intrigue.

Highly recommended!
