Tales of Crow #1

The Eyes in the Dark

Rate this book
For Jun Matsumoto, a school trip to the remote study camp of British Heights is hardly his idea of a good time. Akane, the love of his life, hates him, and he’s rooming with Ogiwara, the school bully.

Things get even worse when a dose of bad Christmas turkey makes most of the students sick, and suddenly Jun and a handful of others are left cut off from civilization as the snow closes in. Pretty soon the power has gone off, and a strange, birdlike creature begins terrorizing the guests.

If Jun thought the school trip could get no worse, he’d be wrong. As the students group together with the other remaining guests, suddenly their understanding of danger turns on its head.

There are creatures out in the woods, and they’re hungry for human flesh…

Sex, Drugs, & Rock 'n Roll!

But, also... a deformed madman creating cyborg bears...

This little gem was the perfect book to read over the Christmas holiday, especially for those not wanting to think about the holidays, but rather a fun and thrilling escape, by way of Japan and Britain.

This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review.
This book I have to say was a wee bit strange. I was expecting a horror story but that's not really what I got.
A washed up rock band with van problems and a bunch of not so good students find themselves in an estate owned by a super wealthy man and their resident ghost/professor.
The book was not scary whatsoever but the story telling was good.
The characters were realistic. The ghost/professor not so much.
I would have liked a bit more action and a bit more scare to the whole book.
I would suggest it to people that aren't into horror too much but like to have some action.

I  got this Arc copy for an honest review and I found that the book was very entertaining and captivating to read and so I gave it 4 stars.

I thought that the author got all creative and imaginative with his characters in the story and the way he wrote it.  There were times that it had me laughing and others that it had me guessing as to what was going on.  It also had me wondering about this mysterious creature that was killing the people. Was it a cross breed mutation or a horrible experiment gone wrong or even worse, was it someone's sick idea of a joke?  Plus why was it there and why was it killing people?

The story was told by multiple different characters, both teens and adults (through their past and present happenings) and how it affected their lives.  It also went into details about how the characters felt about different situations, which I liked very much.  I like the way that the author gets into the study of relationships or ideas of it and explains it from the character's point of view from past to present.

To be in a medieval style British buildings with a snowstorm and some members becoming ill at a location that's in the mountains of Japan and with no way out and to encounter some horror creatures in woods, and have to go through horrific events. A group of  Japanese high school teens who go on a camp trip to British heights and are unaware of the horrific events that are going to happen to them. Then add four stranded touring band members that also end up there and it's then when everything starts to go wrong!  Who will survive? This funny, action and some what scary story ends a little buzzard, but it stops at a great place to continue in the next book.

While recently going through all my e-books to try clear out my files, I came across this little gem that I had downloaded a while ago.

We have a washed up Japanese metal band, a former J-pop princess whose fallen from grace, star-crossed lovers, and a strange creature in the forest surrounding a English castle/estate located in the Japanese Alps. Throw in mother nature and an evil genius and this was a story I really enjoyed.

Can't wait for the movie.

Those of you who have read and loved Chris Ward’s earlier novels will not be disappointed with this one. They Came Out After Dark is set in a remote student camp in Japan which becomes isolated by heavy snow. Then horrible things start to happen.
Mr Ward is an expert at building the tension to screaming point. A real page-turner, this. And only the first in a whole new series. What joy!

Maybe more for teens

I just couldn't get into this book.
It's got too much going on with all the different characters, mostly a school class.
I think teens might like this, but I didn't.

Lot of action to be found after you get through the first third of the book. I nearly gave up but glad I finished because it got really different from what I expected. Strange, dark suspense/ horror mix.

The Eyes in the Dark - a review by Rosemary Kenny

This seems to be a simple teen-scream horror story, with the only difference being that it's set in Japan, but not so. Chris Ward has come up with a supernatural tale that seems so ordinary and straightforward, that when things go bump in the night, the shock is far greater and the level of fear notches up a gear.

A group of ordinary Japanese high school students are on a mini-school trip to improve their English at a castle that houses a museum, theatre and study centre, in the Japanese Mountains. Things quickly get scary after most of the students start being violently ill and noises are heard in the night. Then a Japanese rock band on their way to a gig get lost and then arrive for refuge at the castle that is now in darkness as the electricity supply has been cut - by the storm, or another means?
The castle is totally isolated and in darkness which ramps up the terror-factor exponentially...then things start going bump in the night and people start disappearing/ dying. MCs are star-crossed young lovers, Jun Matsumoto and Akane Yamaguchi who are forced to unite against the evil bird-like Professor Crow,
who is actually a ghost and has a dark secret to hide.
I liked the young protagonists and their positivity and determination in the face of supernatural forces at work.
I didn't like the band members of Plastic Black Butterfly who don't contribute anything to the story worth having them in it.
Some of the characters were engaging, but some were peripheral and only included as a mechanism for becoming victims of illness, experimentation and/or death and seem barely worth crying over.
As it's only the 1st of 4 books in the Tales of Crow series by the inimitable Chris Ward, there is plenty of scope for improvement into what could be a retelling of Edgar Allen Poe's poem The Raven and old film The Masque of the Red Death, starring Vincent Price.
Hide behind the sofa if you're the nervous type - but don't miss this excellent, entertaining start to what could well be an epic Chris Ward series!

Japanese high school students take a trip to British Heights for a study camp to work on their English speaking skills. Should be just a regular time spent with fellow classmates, right? Wrong! There is something dark there. But out in the woods...there is something lurking...something dangerous and that will try to destroy them all.
The Eyes in the Dark is book one in Chris Ward's Tales of Crow series and this book is engaging from beginning to end. I am an avid fan of horror stories and so when I read the blurb for this book I was eager to pick it up. I have to admit that I was hoping for a supernatural horror story, but this book isn't that if that is what you are hoping for. The monsters in this book are "real." The author takes the time to go back in time with certain characters and situations to give us some background on the characters and their situations. These flashbacks aren't clearly marked (as in 7 years ago, etc.) but the author does create breaks in the story so you can notice the change. There are twists and surprises in this book that you honestly don't see coming. I love how the author weaves the story together to create this interesting story.
Now while for me, this book isn't scary scary...it will have me more hesitant to visit remote places with extensive forests surrounding them. Haha! You never know what could be out there lurking in the dark. There are some editorial issues with this book which disappoints me, but nothing so extensive that it makes me want to put the book down.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit and am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. Crow is still out there and I'm eager to find out...where he goes, what he begins again and what happens next. If you enjoy a good story that will keep you on the edge of your seat and that has some gore, sex, and more then get this book. It will be worth the read.

This author is extremely versatile. This book is a bit more intense than what I've been reading of his books (but I haven't read all of his books yet) but it is very good. The story is totally engrossing and I can't wait for the next installment! Mr. Ward's characters are always likable, in fact, you may grow to love them as I did. Chris' characters always want to do the right thing when it comes right down to the wire. This book has many characters with that selfless, or rather self-sacrificing. As for the bad guys, well, you have to read to find out. An interesting use of unique problem-solving techniques thrown in for good measure.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Whilst I enjoyed this book, I found some parts a little difficult to get through, especially at the beginning, which meant it was hard for me to get into the story to start with. However, I'm glad I persisted, as it's a great story, full of drama, horror, thrilling action, heartbreaking loss, and a twist of romance too. It's not suitable for young readers as it's very gory and has sexual content, but I would definitely recommend it to adults looking for something different to read, and am hoping to read more books in the series soon.
NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions

Absolutely Amazing! Highly recommended!

This techno thriller stunned me many times by it's supreme world and the excellent characters that populate it. I was totally blown away by the end of this deeply engrossing story and I am thrilled silly about the fact that I can now read book two in this series. Kudos to Chris Ward, he wrote a superlative story. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Unusual story

A spine chilling story, that is all the more powerful because there is a remote possibility that it could happen. There are lots of blood and guts too.

This is a 2.5 Star Scoring
When I received this ebook, free from one of my daily newsmails, I was actually excited. The synopsis read like a true horror story, but as with many stories that carry an Asian theme, they are drawn out with extensive backstory and near suicidal personalities. I really doubt I'll move on to the other two books in this series.

The story is about a school group that traveled into the mountains of Japan to visit a study camp in British Heights- an out of place museum, theater and more. Its owned by Mr. Forbes, a s'diddi billionaire who cares for his precious antiquities more than the people paying to visit them. Students are suddenly trapped in a white-out snow storm, doubled over from an illness I shall not name, since I don't believe in SPOILERS and hunted by something that comes out of Edgar Allen Poe's, The Raven!

To be honest, the only reason I finished this book is because the author promised me a monster. The characters were a bit drab but strong enough in Jun and Akane to make me command my eyes show me to the ending... or new beginning. Other than that, I read about a bunch of foolish teenagers who (periodically) did the same thing to their British instructors as to me and my friends when I lived in Japan: They spoke ugly words in their native tongue while pretending to be kind and respectful. That part was true to life to me. Ugh...

This was my first time reading anything by Chris Ward and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this great horror story. Chris Ward has given us a horror adventure with a lot of blood and gore, but if there was a movie for this book you would fine me with a pillow over my eyes ,I know I'm a coward when it comes to horror movies. But remember read this story with the lights on. We have a group of Japanese High school age teenagers are attending a trip for three nights to a camp called British Heights .But the camp is located in the mountains of japan and it's been modeled after a medieval style of British buildings. this was support to be a educational trip for the students in order to help them with their English .But everything don't go as planned ,when a snow storm hits and some of them become quite sick. But then add in 4 members of a band that is touring ends up stranded at the camp also, and then all hell start breaks loose .There is some kind of creatures in the woods ,that is responsible for some terrific events. There is sighting of ghost ,weird noises, and some strange beast are also seen. But so professor Crow steps up the creep factor on the poor people, and the creatures are hungry for flesh of the living humans. Can they save themselves from horrible death? I could go on and tell you more about this great story ,but that would spoil it for you .I highly recommend that you read this story ,you won't be disappointed .

medieval camp, deep in the Japanese mountains. Along with the kids, rock band Plastic Black Butterfly has taken a wrong turn and ended up at British Heights too. But while there, a snow storm strikes and leaves the kids snowed in. Then the students become sick from dinner and some creatures start hunting the kids down. Not everyone is going to make it out from this little adventure.

You have a combination of teenage issues, a rock band, and monsters. What could go wrong? Of course you have rude teenagers that don’t want to learn. When they get sick and start becoming monster chow I couldn’t really feel bad for them. I thought the monsters were a great twist. There is a lot of action, some humor, and a lot of blood.

This book was not what I expected but it was not a bad book. It ended with a great lead into the next book and I would like to see what happens next. This was my first book from Chris Ward and I am curious to read this other books.

I received They Came Out After Dark from Candid Book Reviews and Kindle for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

This book was very entertaining, I did not want to put it down. You were on the edge of your seat wondering what would happen each turn of the page. Ferric writing and wonderful plot. Can't wait to read the next book.
A group of Japenese students is on a trip staying at British Heights in the Japan Alps. It is a place to learn about British culture, and the students are assigned to classes they must attend.
In another part of town the band Plastic Black Butterfly is on their way to a gig. They take a wrong turn. Since the weather is getting bad they decide to pull into a place to stay for the night.... British Heights.
During their stay they encounter issues such as sickness, an avalanche, love triangles, and a sighting of the rumored ghost, Professor Crow, the man that looked like a bird.......wait...... what was that noise? It sounded like a bear, but not a normal bear.... and what is that moving in the forest? It is hairy like a bear, but the size of a bus?
What happens to everyone? What are the "things" lurking around the property and where did they come from? Will everyone make it out alive?.....

Great book. I am a big fan of horror/suspense and this book definitely delivered. We have a group of teens that are on a school trip to a castle in the Japanese Alps to expand their education. What could go wrong? These Japanese students are on this trip to learn more about the British culture. Boring!!!!! But throw in the wayward band that showed up on their door step after taking a wrong turn and apparently not listing to their navigation system very well. LOL. On top of all this a bad storm rolls in. This is the icing on the cake. YES!!!!!!!!!!! Now we have the setting and characters for a classic horror show!!!
Once everyone is stuck inside the castle, the horror begins, people begin getting ill, ghosts are sighted, weird noises are heard, and strange beasts are seen. Professor Crow definitely upped the creep factor. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

love all of Chris Ward's books, and am so excited to read this new series set in Japan!

The story is told by multiple characters, both adults and teens, and I found the relationships (past and present) between different people really interesting.
The setting was well-described and I had a clear idea where all the characters were at different times. Very important in this type of action story.

I really liked all the mythology, including the character Professor Crow and his creations. (Won't give too much away about that). I admit, I thought this was a YA book, but it does actually have a lot of adult content. It suited the story though. And finally, the ending left off in a great place to follow on to the next book 'The Castle of all Nightmares', which I will be reading next.

They Came Out After Dark was a very strange book. There was too much foreshadowing throughout the entire book for my taste. I expect a scary book to actually scare me instead of telling me ahead of time what will happen. That being said it was a good story if a bit unrealistic. The descriptions were fantastic of the setting and made me feel as though I was there. The history of the relationships in this book and how they ended up were really interesting and were in great detail. I also liked that the story was told by different characters and went into detail about how they felt about situations. The ending leaves it at a perfect place for a second one, though I've not quite decided if I would read it. Over all it wasn't too bad, but not one of my favorites either.
