Fully Happy To Garfield, happiness is a full tummy (followed by a long nap). Fans of the fat cat, hungry for laughs, can go to their happy place when they gobble up this latest treasure of pleasure!
James Robert "Jim" Davis is an American cartoonist who created the popular comic strip Garfield. Other comics that he has worked on are Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, Slapstick, and a strip about Mr. Potato Head.
Jim Davis was born in Fairmount, Indiana, near Marion, where he grew up on a small farm with his father James William Davis, mother Anna Catherine (Carter) Davis, brother Dave, and 25 cats. Davis' childhood on a farm parallels the life of his cartoon character Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was also raised on a farm with his parents and a brother, Doc Boy. Jon, too, is a cartoonist, and also celebrates his birthday on July 28. Davis attended Ball State University. While attending Ball State, he became a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He earned the dubious honor of earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university, an honor incidentally shared with Late Show host David Letterman.
Davis as of 2007 resides in Muncie, Indiana, where he and his staff produce Garfield under his company, Paws, Inc., begun in 1981. He was married to Carolyn, a singer and elementary teacher whom he met while both were attending college, and has a son named James with her. However, the couple divorced, and Davis since 2000 has been married to Jill, Paws' senior vice president of licensing, who has worked there approximately 25 years.
Ironically, Davis did not own cats when he started Garfield because of Carolyn's allergies, but they owned a Labrador retriever named Molly. With Jill, the family has expanded to include children Ashley and Chris; three grandchildren, Chloe, Carly and Cody; cats, Spunky and Nermal; and a dog, Pooky.
READ, READ, READ! All I have been doing lately was reading a bunch of “Garfield” comics written by Jim Davis and why not? I just love the fat orange fur ball and I have stumbled upon a recent set of collections of “Garfield” comics called “Garfield Goes to his Happy Place,” which is the fifty-eighth book in the “Garfield” comic collection series!
What is this story about?
Well, Jon has finally gotten himself a girlfriend in Liz the veterinarian and they seem to be extremely happy with each other…well, unless they have to deal with Garfield’s nonstop sarcastic and bizarre behavior regarding food and relationships! This collection features comic strips that detail not only Jon’s newfound relationship with Liz, but how Garfield deals with his new relationship with Liz!
What I loved about this story:
Jim Davis’ writing: As always (and I mean always), Jim Davis’ writing is as sharp and witty as ever as we get to see Jon’s new life with his girlfriend Liz and how they are dealing with Garfield’s bizarre and sarcastic behavior. I loved the fact that Jon finally gets a girlfriend in Liz and it was cute that Liz still loves Jon no matter how weird Jon can get or how even weirder Garfield can get. It was great seeing another character added to the main cast of Jon, Garfield and Odie as it brings a fresh new take on the “Garfield” comics and a bit more depth in the stories since we actually see Jon developing as a character as his relationship with Liz progresses. The humor is as usual witty and I loved the fact that Jim Davis still kept the sarcastic humor of the “Garfield” comics intact, even if there are a couple of changes in the status quo of the series, such as Jon’s relationship with Liz.
Jim Davis’ artwork: Jim Davis’ artwork is as usual hilarious to look at as all the characters have cartoony large eyes and bizarre body shapes that fit nicely with the witty humor of this comic series. I also loved the image of Liz herself as she is drawn with the same cartoony eyes as the other characters, but her appearance seems to carry a more mature air as she is like the sanest character in the entire comic series.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, “Garfield Goes to his Happy Place” is a fantastic read for anyone who is a huge fan of the “Garfield” comics and I would definitely recommend this title to anyone who is looking for a good “Garfield” read!
If I could give this book ten stars I would. I was laughing pretty much all through the book. Page 45, very top of page, "Burp" comic had me laughing till tears came out of my eyes. This book made my day. I will forever love Garfield for the rest of my life.
Summary: Garfield is a cat who loves to eat and torment his owner in numerous funny ways. This comic book keeps your attention with its dry humor.
Prompt: This format would be under graphic novel. The pictures carry on the story even when the text stops. I think this would be a great addition to a classroom library!
This series got better when Jon and Liz started dating. No more Jon sitting by the telephone getting turned down. The dynamic between Garfield and Liz is hilarious. 😂
