DNF. Not my type of romance. I don't need to hear H talking about loving and desiring OW. Turns out it's his mate that later dies I guess.

OH MY GODDESS.

I tend to stay away from this genre because I haven't found good ones but I loved Christi Snow's When The Mission Ends romantic-suspense series and the plot of Through the Veil intrigued me so I knew I had to give it a try. I AM SO GLAD I DID.

Long story short: the US has been divided into East States (ES) and West States (WS) by a Veil that no one can cross, except that one day Lori escapes from a lab (in the ES) where she's been experimented (because she has powers) and crosses the Veil. She arrives to the ES and falls into Marcus's feet. He rescues her and takes her under his wing (literally, because this guy and every other person in the WS has wings and powers), even though Lori doesn't have wings and he has no idea how she crossed the "impenetrable" Veil.

The connection between Marcus and Lori is instant and holy-mother-of-god, full of sparks and flames. There's a lot of chemistry between this two. Christi Snow does a terrific job writing their interactions, feelings and H-O-T sex, make-out and kissing scenes. And even though it might've seem too soon, I believed they were meant to be.

Individually, it rarely happens that I like the hero/heroine outside of them as couple, but here it does happen. Marcus went through a terrible loss and is still a little hurt. Luckily, he doesn't let the hurt mess with his job and showing his protector, funny and adorable personality. Lori in the other hand, starts weak (mentally and emotionally) but as the story progresses she finally embraces her strength.

The best part…

Through the Veil is not just a love story. There are more layers to it:

There's friendship, courage, unity… I loved every Marcus and Lori interaction but I also loved the friendship between the Warriors (a group where Marcus belongs that is in charge of the security of the WS). I believed they've known each other for a long time and that they care for every one of them. I laughed along side them (a lot and I was not expecting that, love it! ), I grinned and I cried (yes those last moments made me cry).

In few words:

Through the Veil gave me SO MANY FEELINGS and EMOTIONS. It is one of the best books I've read in a long time; one of the best starts of a series too. While many beginnings are boring because they're laying the ground for the upcoming books, this one doesn't bore. Yes, it gives the important details so you can know the situation of the new world but it doesn't overwhelm. It is PERFECTION.

Christi Snow is one of the best and most refreshing new voices in romance and she needs more attention. Seriously guys, if you haven't read anything from her, start with this book--even if you're not a PNR fan. She will hook you in the best possible way.

*sigh*

Now I am just counting the months till I can continue this series. I need to know more about the Warriors (and hopefully more of Marcus and Lori, as well).

Let's just start this review with a Holey freakin Moley! An absolute MUST READ BOOK! Let me get this stated right off the bat, this is one of those rare 5+++ Star Reviews.

It isn't often that I read a book that demands my attention in such an intense manner but Christi Snow tells the kind of story that captures the imagination and yet makes you think it's a perfectly reasonable possibility.

Through the Veil is book one of Ms. Snow's eight book series, Through the Veil. It sets up the series beautifully and creates a wonderful world. All the while developing a fascinating relationship between her two lead characters.

58 years ago a gorge opened up from Mobile, AL to Quebec City, Canada to split the United States into the Western States (WS) and the Eastern States (ES).

40 years later, a fog rolled in on the WS that they called the Veil. Within twelve hours it formed an impenetrable wall between the two sides.

It’s been 18 years since anyone has known what’s happening on the other side of the Veil.

Only now things are starting to change...beginning with one woman who escapes from the ES through the veil to the WS.

Lori is an Other, one of the children who survived the veil but over time developed a unique and powerful gift. For years she managed to keep it a secret but sharing it with her fiance proved to be her downfall. A corrupt cog in the system her turned her in for more political power. Six years later, years of captivity, where she was studied (insert tortured here) she finally manages to escape. Wounded and naked she knows there is only one possible chance. Use her power of manipulating energy to escape through the veil. There are three possible outcomes, it doesn't work and she dies trying, she gives up and dies via torture, she succeeds... While the odds are against her it comes down to life or death and Lori would rather die trying.

Marcus is a Warrior for the WS, he also is one of the children who survived except on the WS side ONLY the children survived and they ALL developed some interesting gifts. First and foremost every single one of them grew wings. Marcus was a little luckier in love than Lori, he had five amazing years with a woman he loved until she was attacked and killed by a predator (creepy fur covered monsters, crazed with only the desire to kill). His life since has been pretty bleak with only his job as a warrior keeping him motivated. At least until this naked, wounded and WINGLESS woman falls at his feet. Literally.

Aside from the excellent chemistry between Lori and Marcus, Christi writes this intense and complicated love story. It seems that Lori and Marcus are more similar than they think but their differences create a gorge all their own. Are their similarities enough to build a bridge? Can they build on a powerful connection turning it to love?

And then there are the differences in their world's. The ES is corrupt run by a government built by adults who survived the veil. An apocalyptic government of greed, power and control. And the WS is one that has risen from the fires in a land where only the children have survived. No Lord of the Flies, this is based on respecting the Earth and all her bounty.

There is just so much to offer in this book. What about those predators? I have my theories, can't wait to see if they are right? And can Lori cross the Veil to save her friends? And.....

It's just that good!

Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the review copy of this book.

As an avid reader of Christi Snow's books, I knew I wanted to give this one a try, even though I don't read a whole lot of fantasy/paranormal, though that may be changing a bit. The blurb sounded interesting and the cover is just gorgeous.

I wasn't disappointed. Once I started reading it, I was hard pressed to actually put it down. I found the story and the characters engaging and their predicament interesting. I loved how the Eastern States (ES) and the Western States (WS) not only got effected differently from the falling of the veil, but also how they reacted differently to their new situation. It makes for some good conflict to overcome and to defeat.

The WS got a very different dose of whatever happened, than the ES did. In both, people over 18 died and disappeared, but the WS got fog and its inhabitants got wings, while in the ES, some people got various gifts and other people got nothing at all. The ones that got nothing? You guessed it -- they pretty much want to kill anyone that's different. The "Others" are forced to hide who they are or risk arrest and awful torture. The WS don't have it all good, though. They do have to deal with these Yeti like creatures they just call Predators. They, apparently, only come out after dark and they are extremely dangerous. No one knows what they really are, though I have my suspicions.

No one knows what caused the fracture or what the veil really is, either. They only know that it serves as an impenetrable barrier between the ES and WS. That is until Lori, an Other from ES, manages to use her talent to cross over while escaping from a six year captivity where she and other Other's were experimented on and tortured. Through the Veil focuses on Lori and her plight and Marcus, a Warrior from WS. When Lori makes it to the WS, she pretty much makes an impression on Marcus by collapsing at his feet. Way to feed his ego, yeah? And, as it turns out, they both have a telepathic link to each other that is quite strong. Both of them have been damaged by their pasts -- Lori, courtesy of her ex-fiance, who used knowledge of her "Other-ness" to further his political career in the ES and Marcus, who lost his mate when she was attacked by a Predator several years ago. Neither of them are wanting to trust the other, much less more, but they can't really help themselves. Some things are just meant to be.

So, it is up to Lori to convince the leaders in WS to help her free the Other's from captivity in ES and bring them back. Sounds easy, right? Sure. Well, that is where the fun begins, after all.

I really want to read more about this rich and vibrant world. Lori and Marcus got me hooked and now I cannot wait to read the next in the series.

The part of this book I actually hated, though, was that bit at the end where we're told the next book will be "Coming Soon" ... "Fall 2015". I somehow think my definition of "soon" is a bit different than Ms. Snow's. Seriously -- we have to wait a year for Griff and Shar's story?!?!? That's torture, people and I'm sure that violates the Geneva Convention somehow!

But, please, don't let that bit about having to wait a year to get the next story stop you from enjoying this one right now. It's a pretty awesome introduction into a new world. :)

Romance books and series often follow a certain familiar plot arc, but when done right, it’s still a fabulous read. This book is a great example of that.

This book combined steamy romance featuring a few detailed, but not explicit, sex scenes with a unique paranormal setup and lots of action. The characters are strong and the individual personalities are fully formed and easy to believe.

A lot of romance stories feature insta-love, and I appreciate that this wasn’t present. There was insta-lust, which is totally believable, and a little bit of insta-trust, which worked in this set-up. A combination of those two things made the relationship angle believable, and gave me warm fuzzy feelings.

Every classic romance plotline features a communication breakdown that causes conflict, and how this is handled often makes the difference between an enjoyable story and an eye-rolling cliche. This book handled that section beautifully. It was realistic and believable. I bought into the setup, and each character’s reaction. There was no ridiculous miscommunication here, just a difficult situation that would have been hard to predict by anyone. I loved the authenticity of it, and it makes me want to read every book in the series, and everything in the author’s backlist.

Creating romance stories that don’t cause eye rolls is difficult, but was accomplished wonderfully here, and with the added bonus of a paranormal world set-up that I’ve never encountered before. Based on the characters introduced, I think I can guess a few of the characters who will be the stars of later books in the series, and it has me excited. This is one series that I can’t wait to see develop. It has a classic romance feel, but with a great execution.

To escape torture and experimentation, Lori crosses the veil and lands at the feet of a warrior. Markus is drawn to protect the woman without wings even though he doesn’t know what she means to his people in this riveting post apocalyptic fantasy romance.

A steady to fast paced plot keeps readers on the edge of their seats with lots of suspense, excitement and romance. Lori left a world of mistrust and corruption behind but how can she know that Markus won’t betray her as well. The reader can’t help but get caught up in the story as Markus is drawn to protect Lori and they discover that their attraction to each other will not be denied. Passions burn hot but the relationship will take some time as each works through their emotional issues.

The well written scenes and details capture the imagination and paints vivid images of the setting to bring the story to life and the strong compelling characters grab the reader’s attention and ensure that the reader will come back for more. Spine tingling anticipation builds as the reader explores this fascinating new world right along with Lori, one that has its own share of danger and mysterious happenings. The various powers or gifts of each character adds lots of spice to the story along with the mystical quality of what exactly happened that caused the world to shift in this way and continues to change without notice.

There is never a dull moment in this fascinating world and the setting promises grand adventures for readers to enjoy. I was completely caught up in the story from the very beginning and the author kept me guessing with surprising twists and an intriguing world filled with interesting elements and bewitching characters and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

This is a book unlike any other I have read. The world that the author created is so unique and creative, keeping the reader wanting more!

For the last 18 years, the East and West have been separated by a thick fog that is called the Veil. No one can penetrate it....until now. Lori is an other and has the power to go through the Veil, which she does. She falls at the feet of Warrior Marcus and thus the story begins.

Marcus and the rest of the Warriors from the Western States live in TREES. They built tree houses for them to live in and escape the predators that live on the ground. They get there by flying up to their house. Yes!! The Warriors all have beautiful wings!

This story is so complex and unique in a good way. The chemistry between Lori and Marcus is fantastic!! Even the secondary characters have such a strong bond with each other, making the wait for book #2 difficult! There is suspense, love, romance, fantasy, and so much more within this book. The Warriors are so sexy and HOT!! The leaders of the Others are intense and sinister. There is something for everyone within this one story!

I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone that enjoys reading. FIVE STARS from me!!

My Rating: 5 amazing Stars

I have really been sucking lately when it comes to paying attention to details in blurbs. Honest to goddess I had no clue Through the Veil was going to contain PNR aspects. From the blurb, I was assuming either apocalyptic or dystopian but PNR, nope. And may I add how happy because A/D genres are turning into a addiction for me but add PNRs…CHA-CHING! Okay, you do have to have a good story to go with it as well. Lucky me author Christi Snow gave me just what I was looking for.

I’m not going to lie and say I was immediately sucked into the story. To be exact, I was just a teensy bit lost and I wasn’t quite sure if it was me or the book. We start twelve years after the Veil with ESIA coming to Lori’s business looking for someone, she uses her power to help him get away and it turns out it was her fiancé was the one who signed the order. Shortly after she’s captured at her apartment and hauled away by ES Enforcers because she’s consider an Other and she is imprisoned for six years until she escapes. The next chapter revolves around Marcus on the WS side, how he’s a Warrior, we get to meet the other Warriors, they all have wings and how Marcus’ love dies. *Shakes head very confused* Feeling lost because I certainly was. I had to check a few times to see if there was a preface that I missed – nope. As the story plotted along, I started to get why one was missing. Believe me when I say, just go with the flow it will make sense. There’s some serious world building that takes place throughout the story and now looking back, I can see how a preface would have been an overload.

Now back to the characters and what I thought about the story. Characters, there’s quite a few of them with the main two being Lori and Marcus. Liked them both! She makes for a very strong heroine for this story. Not Amazon strong but more along the lines she’s endured a lot and came out the other side alive. Marcus, he has issues because of his lost love that tend to get in the way. There’s not a insta-love between then but there is a insta-attraction. Of course it doesn’t hurt that he is built awesomely and he, and all men on the WS, go around with no shirts on…because they have WINGS! Throw some telepathy in there, too. And a few also have special abilities. Wha…??? Are they angels? Nope. Shifters? Nuh huh. They are humans who have changed after the Veil. I had to keep telling myself just go with it. There’s a bunch of other characters, Warriors and Others, we meet that strike my fancy and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.

As for the premise of the story, I loved it. I’m not going into details because it really is something a reader needs to take in as it unfolds. The world building is something that progresses nicely and gives a curiously interesting concept. The whole reason I like apocalyptic/dystopian stories is the possibilities of the what ifs. Can I see what goes on in Through The Veil as a possibility in the real world? Yeah, no. It is a bit farfetched but if it did, please goddess let me be on the WS side!

How I’ve never heard of Christi Snow before I have no clue. From what I’ve read so far, I know I have missed out, but not anymore. This author is firmly in my radar now and I will be telling my friends she is a must read. Now let’s see which of her books I’m going to be reading next. Looking, looking…

I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

I loved this book. It had an interesting premise to it and I was a least at little curious about the whole setup. Especially the wings. And I was very happy to find out that the ones having wings had nothing to do with angels. Nice new take on that. And while nothing really big happened until the end, so many little things happened throughout and it was a great way to set up the rest of the series and what's most likely to come.

The US has been divided by a giant chasm for years now and completely separating the two sides is the veil that fell shortly after the chasm formed. Nothing has been able to pass thru it of any kind. Until Lori. Betrayed by her fiance, Lori had spent the past six years locked up and tortured/experimented on for being an "Other". That's what the people of the ES call those with special powers, and whom they are terribly afraid of ('cause you know, anything different must be bad and destroyed). Finally one day she was able to escape with the help of the friends she had made there (also Others) and manages to use her power to actually cross thru the veil. Collapsing at Marcus's feet. Marcus is a Warrior of the WS whose duty is to protect their leader and fight off these creatures they call predators. He lost everything to one of them some years back and pretty much lives for his job. But the moment he finds Lori he is overtaken with the need to protect her and be near her. When she wakes up she's sure she's dead when she sees everyone with wings, but death shouldn't hurt so much so she knows better. Being shown around life on that side of the veil shows her a whole new way to live in a much better world. While the ES has mostly maintained the current way of life from government to media, the WS is completely different (it may or may not have to do with the fact that somehow adults survived in the ES while everyone over 18 died on the WS). The people of the WS have been gifted with so many things like their wings, telepathy, and various other powers and have learned to live a peaceful life with the Earth. Lori wants desperately to bring her friends there too. Lucky for her, Marcus has fallen for her and pretty much everyone she comes into contact with likes her. Including their leader who is willing to send some of her warriors thru the Veil with Lori in a rescue attempt. Lori's own gift seems to feed off the Earth and so to be of help she trains to become stronger and better at it without it draining her completely. She ends up being much stronger than any thought she would be. The day of the mission comes and it does not go off without a hitch. Far from it. What can go wrong, seems to go wrong and they only partially succeed. Which sets it up great for the next book.

I think I loved every character introduced here. So many of them were just fun and it was great to laugh out at some of the things they said or did. And how sweet (if not predictable) was it when Marcus proposed... Thru the whole book I was actually wondering if the whole sterility thing that was an issue on both sides would have been overcome between the two of them from different sides, but as far as we know, Lori's not pregnant so maybe not...

I am very much looking forward to the next book and only wish that I didn't have to wait until fall 2015.

September saw me go into hospital for 5 days for another knee replacement an so I have had plenty of time to read, especially as I have had trouble sleeping and thus my nights have been a combination of meditation, reading, listening to music, watching Netflix, occasional news reading - especially the night of the Scottish Referendum where I sat and watched TV and read the BBC news online for quite a lot of time, and finally also trying hypnosis. Since all these combined have left me still largely unable to seep, I am taking the advice of a friend and not worrying about it, but using the time to rest and recuperate and do whatever suits me in the night. In addition, during the day too as I am still not going outside the house without a companion and even then not walking far… however, I have hit the Green light for stage of recuperation - apparently even the disturbed nights are OK!
However, with a brain rather scrambled from the drugs I have been given I have not really managed to type up my reviews so I am going to do my usual and write a combined set of reviews. Not in any sort of order or reading however.
Book 1: Beyond The Veil
This about an innovative idea of what could happen if Gaia got annoyed with humans and their destruction of her environment.
The concept of the loss of all adults is interesting because it enables the children to discover for themselves what is useful from their parents’ lives and what is not. It also enables the children to develop very differently. So a philosophical problem area. I am masking the assumption here that adulthood started at 18 years of age but this was not clarified.
The Veil is a physical feature that divides the US in two, and reforms their coastlines - there is an assumption that it goes throughout the world but again this is not clarified. The Veil comes up from what used to be the Californian plate fault in the US. In one half of the country a civilisation is developed on an eco-friendly line with farming and small communities and herbs etc for healing although it is clear that some of the remnants of the previous era was used through reading the books left behind to assist in building and medicine.
In this civilisation, the children develop some unusual physical features and mental abilities. The climate is maintained as a temperate rain forest by a layer of mist and this enables the men to develop not only serious muscle power but also a lack of shirts. Leaving lots for females to drool over… if your imagination can supply the images that is.
The contrasting civilisation on the other side of the Veil develops with greater technology and political power broking was early in development amongst these youngsters. Some people developed extra mental or physical capabilities as they grew up but in this civilisation it was a minority and they were termed ‘others’ and not embraced by the mainstream population. This gave the impression of a Fascist style of government whereas the other civilisation was more communal.
This book is the first of a planned series of 7 (!!) all of which have titles and presumably the author already knows the main plot lines. I shall follow the series with interest.
However, I did find the writing a little slow at times and the story-lines could have been more complex even as we are introduced to the ideas behind the plot. 3.75 stars.

I didn’t know this author who seems to have written until now mostly romantic suspense. Through the veil is the first volume very enjoyable from her fantastic-post-apocalyptic series of the same name which should have 8 books.

58 years after a gorge cut in two the United States, Lori is the first person who succeeds to cross to the other side. Endowed with psychic powers, she’s running from the experimentations from the East States’ scientists. She’s rescued by Marcus, a Warrior from the West States. She’s amazed by the changes the survivors from the west underwent, and determined to obtain their help to go and save her friends always prisoners on the other side or go back alone in spite of her burgeoning feelings for Marcus.

Lori is strong, devoted, and I liked that, even if she’s sorry to think the changes that are occurring may happen because of her, she’s determined to go and take back her friends. After 6 years locked up and tortured in the wake of a betrayal, her hesitation to trust once again is a completely logical reaction. I also liked how she marvels to being able to use her powers freely.
I liked Marcus too, he suffered a lot after the death of his companion and the way he come back to life, so to speak, is quite well written. It was pleasant seeing him amazed by Lori’s abilities and trying to support her in her discoveries.
I liked that they don’t give in too fast to their attraction, and that there’s no concept of fated mate, good point for the author.

On the secondary characters side, we meet the all group of warriors friends of the hero, probably heroes-to-be for their own novel, of whom I liked the solidarity and the interaction. However I stayed with the feeling people from the west are all nice and open, when people from the east are all bad, I hope that will fade with progress of the plot.

The universe created by the author is quite interesting. The two sides of the gorge evolved differently, without contact with each other. In the east the survivors with powers are hunted down and locked up in labs, when in the west every survivors have powers, communicate more or less with the nature, and above all find themselves with big wings with bright feathers. However both sides have the same problem: infertility (I imagine a solution, but hush, we’ll see thereafter if I guessed right).
It’s on this subject that the hero had a reflection which distracted me: how to ensure the human species’ survival? Immediately I thought “hey, there’s not just America in the world!” Because even if the author explain at one point that in the west of Texas the lands collapsed and were submerged, nothing says the other continents disappeared or suffered the same fate…

In spite of this bum note I was drawn into the universe, even of the rhythm isn’t very fast paced. And most of all, if the story of the couple is concluded in the end of the novel, the main plot ends with a cliffhanger. So impossible for me to call it quit, and I can’t wait for next fall for the sequel.

So I accidentally spotted this on NetGalley. And I was like no, it's another angel book, then I see purple wings, then I read the description, then I jumped right in. LOL I seriously liked this one. I really wanna read book two like tomorrow LOL . I wasn't sure what to expect, but that's ok, but she met and topped my expectations with this one. An apocalyptic paranormal romance, that will have everyone cheering and then gasping for air at the end. This is a cool mesh and I loved it. I do believe I should tell you that you may need some kleenex though, it's a little tear jerker :)

I wanna start with the world building first. So, this giant crack formed half way through the US, and a magical barrier formed keeping each side separate. NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE has crossed that veil. Except Lori does, and she lands almost on Marcus's feet. :) But before this. So one side, tries to live peacefully with each other, but is a little less technologically advanced that the other side. Lori's side is all businesses and skyscrapers and electricity, while Marcus's is country living, peaceful, magical. They both have monsters, they are just different.

So, Lori had the perfect life. She has a great job, a fiance, blah blah, but when her fiance learns she has abilities, he turns her in to be tortured for a very long time. So when Lori actually escapes, with some help of her friends and fellow tortured mates, she somehow crosses the veil. She's a shadow of her former self. She's been tortured for so long that she doesn't look at things in the same light as most people. But then, all she can think about is going to back to rescue her friends. She'd rather die that leave them stuck there.

Marcus is having a seriously rough time. His torture is different than Lori's because he's lost everything. Anything that really mattered to him. It's also pretty heart wrenching. And then, somehow, when Lori stumbles onto his feet bleeding, dying, something wakes him back up. She's special, and he has to figure out if his past means more to him than his present and future. He had his moments where I thought I would have to jump in and smack him around, but then he got his head straight. I like him. He's a great male lead.

The story itself is full of action packed mystery. Trying to find out what's going on with the monsters on this side, trying to figure how Lori crossed over, and trying to figure how to get back across to rescue people is our main things, but there's some little twists in there to throw you off your game :) I can't wait to see what's gunna happen with that ending. Who's gunna live... Yeah it's that rough. I am now hooked and I can't wait for more. Trust me, this one is not as predictable as you may think and it's totally worth it! :) 5 PAWS!! Oh, wait, what if I use WINGS today :)

4 1/2.... at least. This one snuck up on me....

I received Through the Veil in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Christi Snow has had me as a fan since I read the prologue in Operation Endgame, her first book in the When the Mission Ends series. That was several books ago and even though I knew that I was going to like Through the Veil, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. See, When the Mission Ends is a Contemporary series. It was actually one of the first Contemporary series that I read. Through the Veil is a PNR series. Not only that, it’s also apocalyptic. Although I love PNR – it is, after all, my g0-to genre – apocalyptic books go kind of slow for me. It usually takes me a while to wrap my head around the world so I get a little nervous each time I pick one up – especially when it’s from an author I already love. So, when I picked up Through the Veil I did so with just a little bit of trepidation. I should have known better. Lori’s introduction pulled me in. Marcus’ introduction broke my heart. The world building had me totally intrigued. Needless to say, I’m hooked.

Through the Veil is actually comprised of two totally different worlds. The Eastern States and the Western States went through totally different transformations after the shift that caused the Veil. The Eastern States had a Dystopian feel, while the Western States were almost magical. Things weren’t perfect in the Western States, but people faired a lot better there. It was definitely the side of the gorge that I would have wanted to end up.

Then there were the characters. Of course Marcus and Lori took center stage but the supporting characters were just as interesting. The society within the Western States was so tight knit that it didn’t take long to get to know them and get totally wrapped up in their relationships. I can’t wait to get to know them all just a little bit better.

As for the story itself… there was plenty of romance, lots of mystery, plenty of danger and a touch of humor. It’s one of those stories that’s hard to put down and you’re sad when it ends. If I had one complaint it would be that I wanted more… but that’s a normal reaction with this author. Even though the next book doesn’t center around Lori and Marcus I’m pretty sure we haven’t seen the last of them. I have a few predictions where they are concerned and I can’t wait to find out if any of my hunches are right. ;)

Christi Snow's delving into new (for her) territory with this series and I'm terribly excited. Winged beings, wicked experiments, and a world on the verge of something more made this an engaging read from beginning to end. I love the division between the ES and the WS -- not just the physical division the veil provided, but the way the two societies moved forward from the point they became divided.

Lori's world is one of corruption and fear. The experiments and torture done to her because of her ability were horrible. Falling into Marcus's world was a shock to the system in more ways than one. From the inhabitants' wings to their way of life, Lori has to readjust her entire way of thinking. Finding them so accepting of her abilities -- the very abilities that had made her an outcast on her side of the veil -- took some getting used to.

Meanwhile, Marcus's reaction to Lori is a punch to the gut. The poor guy had resigned himself to being alone after losing his mate years earlier and his reaction to her takes him by surprise. Lori's presence also heralds a shift in the natural order of things on his side of the veil. Whether her arrival started it or the timing was coincidental, everyone has to learn to adapt to the changes taking place.

I love the worldbuilding and the hints of what's to come. From the weather shifts to the odd behavior of the Predators to Lori's questioning of who and what they might be, it all made me giddy for book 2. This was a solid start to what looks to be an action-packed series.

Lori’s world is far different than our own. A gorge has divided what we know as the east coast the Midwest. Everything past the Mississippi River has disappeared. A strange veil now divides what it called the East States (ES) and the West States (WS). Each region has experienced genetic mutation in their population. The ES has The Others whose gifts run the gambit from teleportation, shifters, matter manipulators, and well as witches. In the WS, all of their residents have grown beautiful and unique wings. Science still reigns in the ES as primitive almost Civil War like technology (without the guns) rein supreme in WS.

They have lived apart for 58 years until Lori comes crashing through the veil and collapsing at Marcus’ feet. Her instant attraction and his instant instinct to protect this wingless human hits them like a ton of bricks. Lori discovers just how far her abilities can reach and how much she can learn to love. This story is not only about the post apocalyptic world of the ES and WS. But, of how love can change everything even a rescue mission and what you’re willing to do to save the ones you love. I will tell you this ends in a cliff hanger ending that will leave you wishing the next book was in your grasps.

I loved this book and could not put it down! Christi Snow created a fascinating world with an intriguing storyline and characters.

A gorge and veil separates the United States into the WS (Western States) and ES (Eastern States). At the time the veil dropped, anyone over the age of 18 died and their bodies disappeared.

Lori is a member of the ES and she also happens to be an "Other" meaning she has a special power. She has the ability to manipulate matter by touching it. She mistakenly tells her fiance of her ability and she is taken in to custody and caged like an animal.

She manages to escape and use her ability to get through the veil and into the WS society where she is found by Marcus.

The WS society developed wings when the veil fell and they live in tree houses to avoid the Predators who live on the ground and come out at night.

Marcus and Lori develop a connection to each other.

I love books that make me feel as if I'm there with the characters and make me feel as if I know them personally. I am completely fascinated by the WS society and abilities of the Others. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC and to Christi Snow for introducing me to a fascinating new world.

I gave Through The Veil 4.5 stars!

The Eastern States (ES) and the Western States (WS) divided by an impenetrable veil that formed 18 years ago.

Lori, an Other living in the corrupted ES is betrayed by her boyfriend. After being experimented on for 6 years, she escapes to the veil and goes through it landing at the feet of Marcus. Nobody has ever crossed throught the veil since it formed so Marcus is shocked to find Lori, wingless and injured, at his feet. He can't help but feel a pull towards Lori and vows to help her heal. And maybe more. Both are surprised when they learn what's on the other side of the veil as they thought both sides had suffered the same fate. But what does it mean that Lori penetrated the veil? Things are changing and maybe not for the better.

The characters are very well developed and the author's descriptions of everything from the worn out buildings to the treehouses to the predators are great.

I loved this book. I was pulled in from the very beginning. Very well written and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

4.5 stars, very good story, awesome world building! There is a divide or veil between the WS and ES states. Lori is special, she is an "other" who lives on the ES side, at the beginning of the book she is engaged to a man in the government who will ultimately betray her. Lori is confined for six years in a lab/prison where the ES experiments on "others", she escapes, crosses the veil that no one has crossed for 18 years and meets Marcus who lives in the WS.
Marcus is one hot winged hero, warrior of the WS. Wow, is he hot, he lost his first love and has been alone for six years. He doesn't know what to think when he finds Lori, but knows she needs his help desperately and the help of many WS warriors to save her friends from imprisonment in the ES.
These two were great together, both have loved and lost and have the physical and mental scars to prove it. The scenes between Lori and Marcus will burn your kindle. The world building was great and I am so interested to read more about the other warriors of the WS. Really good book!

I always find amazing when Christi Snow releases a new book. I followed her as a blogger for years and it's so great to see her create these books The girl never stops that's for sure. But this time she managed to create a dystopian world with flying humans, how amazing is that? I thought it was a little weird that the first one has purple wings, but apparently they come in all colors.

I liked Lori, but truth is I loved Marcus and the WS side, everyone is really welcome and they have some pretty good gifts too. Some things are very different after the Veil and we have to understand the changes and how people managed to create a great society. The book is a bit about introducing this series and we met several great guys, but the romance was also a bit part of this show. I really liked the couple, plus there's more changing coming in the near future.

This is a series to check for sure.

WOW!!  What an awesome idea and a very interesting dystopian world the author has created here.  I understand that Through the Veil is the first book in an eight book series.  I’m not going to summarize the plot as the blurb does a wonderful job of setting up the story.

Things That Bothered Me:

I’m going to start here first since these are the reasons I initially struggled with the story.  Honestly, I’m not usually a picky reader, but these things stood out enough for me to stop reading and note them down.  Once I got over these issues, I really got into the book and ultimately didn’t want it to end.

First: I had no idea where Quebec City, Canada was located (I’m in Louisiana), so I eventually gave in and did a Google search so I could imagine what the United States now looks like.  Some type of map, or even a rough sketch would have been very helpful to me at the start of the story.  Then I realized I would no longer be in existence because I would have disappeared into the ocean!  Gah!!  I’m very curious as to what the rest of the Earth looks like now and hopefully that will be revealed later in the series.

Second: The writing was a bit stiff and all the dialogue sounded the same.  People from the WS haven’t been in contact with anyone from the ES in eighteen years, and EVERYONE spoke the same!  No dialects, no accents, not many new words.  I believe this story is set somewhere in Appalachia and all the original cultures have been lost, as to be expected, but the language is very generic English on both sides of the Veil…where I would expect some diversity to have developed over the past two decades.

Third: The romance was a bit too sappy for me.  Marcus and Lori were totally sexy together, but it was too close to insta-love for me and not enough intensity…or even much sexual tension.  I suspect there is something going on that may be causing people to form unique bonds, and that’s fine…even a bit intriguing.  But this was too mushy-gushy.  Even their one argument didn’t last for very long.  I wanted more PASSION!

Fourth: For the first three quarters of the book, there didn’t seem to be any sense of urgency about it all.  Lori has crossed over into this unknown “world” after escaping from her torturers…a place where everyone flies around with wings and lives in tree houses.  She is determined to save her “Other” friends from captivity, and she said it was urgent, but it didn’t feel urgent to me.

Things I Loved:

The Characters:  Even though they all spoke and sounded the same, they all were unique in their abilities and demeanor and seemingly well developed.  So many characters were introduced throughout the story that I’m surprised I didn’t get a single one of them confused…as far I know.  I’m usually horrible at remembering names, but these people…I just wanted to know more about every single one of them.  Wanted their stories…wanted their happy ever afters.  I just wanted MORE!!!  I also want to know more about the Predators, although I have a theory about that.  And who are the Hidden Ones?  Hmm.  Thank goddess there are seven more books planned!

The Societies:  I loved seeing the differences between the WS and the ES.  Very unique idea, I think, and the world was very vivid and detailed without being overdone and confusing.  I can’t wait to learn more about their powers and what’s going on with the sudden changes on Earth.

The Ending: The last quarter of the book was the best part of the whole thing in my opinion.  Things started happening…things that were unique and surprising and I just wanted it to keep going and never end.

Overall, even though I struggled there for a bit in the beginning, this book will stick with me for while…in a good way.

Looks like the second book, Allied in Flight, will be out in the Fall of 2015.  A year from now!  That worries me a bit because if this series is already planned out for eight books…will it be that many years before I finally know EVERYTHING???!

Through the Veil, Christi Snow
review from jeannie zelos book reviews

I latched onto this one quickly, a paranormal romance with a series of eight books planned...oh that sounds great! I really enjoy books in a series usually, they allow the reader to get really involved and for plots to get quite complex, and the length allows for so much scope in the writing.
So, what did I think about book one? well, that cover...I hardly ever look at covers but this one caught my eye, and for all the wrong reasons. Those wings just look Wrong, disproportionate, they could never hold a man up ( I know it’s not possible but it has to look as though it is!!) and in my imagination they are nothing like that..but the story? Oh yes, that's fun. Set in a world where dramatic changes have happened, dividing the US into WS and ES with a thick, impenetrable veil of mist between them. Neither side knows anything about the other until Lori escapes from the ES and manages to use her powers to get through. No one knows why the change happened or if it could happen again.
The world Lori knows is one of bigotry, where anyone who has special abilities gained after the big change is known as Other, and taken into custody, ostensibly for protection of the rest of the population, but in reality for some inhuman and horrific experimentation. They're not treated as people but as experiments, and after six years of being caged, cruelly tested and experimented on, Lori has finally managed to escape. She can’t believe what she finds on the other side, its a place where everyone has wings, and some have other talents too. They work together to build a place that's safe for everyone. There are no children here either, same as in the ES, where none have been born since the change. It’s a much younger society than the ES, everyone here over 18 died in the change, and as in the ES the bodies simply disappeared.
Lori is happy she’s found sanctuary and a romance with Marcus, but of course she wants to rescue those she was in captivity with – there were four others in with her, and she can’t bear to think of them still suffering. The Warriors though worry at first about their own safety when Lori appears. That’s natural, they don’t know if she’s some disguised threat,  but she’s soon accepted and they agree to help her with a recue attempt.
I enjoyed the world setting, its got great potential and I’m sure we’ve more to learn about it and creatures in it such as the Predators. Since Lori passed through the veil things have begun to change too, with the weather being far colder than usual and Predators changing from nocturnal to coming out during the day. The people of the WS are learning too about how to use their talents, and wondering what's coming next.
What I found a bit difficult to accept was the powers and the growth of them, it seemed too easy an answer for problems that crop up to have someone able to use some new power to overcome it. That's a pet peeve of mine though in fantasy books, it often crops up and I guess I just like my characters to have to struggle a bit, to use their brains more rather than new superpowers...Still, its a great first book, and with lost of potential, though its a year to wait til book two out –
Stars: Four, a great start.

My first Christi Snow book, and also her first foray into the paranormal genre. I really liked it; it was a really good twist on the post apocalyptic type genre. Snow has a really easy writing style, I mean it's very smooth and flows well and I enjoyed the third person POV switching focus between Marcus and Lori.

Goodreads Blurb wraps up the summary the best so here is part of that...

It's been 18 years since anyone has known what's happening on the other side of the Veil.

I am ashamed to admit that I did have to pull out my atlas and look up what constituted as ES and WS because at one point I got really confused the part of North Carolina and Tennessee being in WS. My knowledge of Canadian geography isn't as good as I thought.

Lori was leading a good life living in the ES. She was a prominent business woman with a secret; she was hiding what made her special what the new government said was dangerous. When she confided in her fiancé he chose to use her as step up in his career and turned her in. Marcus along with his brothers have changed when the veil went up and covered the WS. Now with wings things have progressed differently they live peacefully under the leadership of a wonderful woman. Marcus was in love but meetings with the regional leaders took him away for a day and she was killed by the wild predators that inhabit the woods. The last eight years we hard on both Lori and Marcus. Lori was living in a cage with other people who share her extra abilities and treated her and the others as a test subjects. Marcus has lived alone, miserable and focused on work until one day he was on patrol at the edge of the veil when a woman stumbled in from the veil. Lori unique ability allowed her to escape through the veil after her daring escape from the lab she was kept in.

Lori and Marcus have instant chemistry. The connection between them is so strong it ties them together psychically. Right after her arrival into the veil strange things start to happen the cold front has arrived weeks earlier than normal and the predators who are normally nocturnal are showing up during the day and entire families have disappeared. By the end of the book these things are still a mystery. Lori has shared with Marcus and his people what she came from and they agreed that they would go and rescue those she had no choice but to leave behind. Together with Marcus best friend Griffin and fellow warrior Brooklyn create a blood bond to connect them psychically so they can talk telepathically during the mission.

A really good first book in the series, it definitely has me hooked.

This was an incredible book! I Very Highly recommend it to those who love dystopian paranormal romances! This IS Spectacular! The plot was one of the most uniquely written I've ever read and it takes you on an exciting emotional rollercoaster ride till the end. I also completely adored the main group of characters. They were very believable and full of such heart and soul.

Here's a little about the story. Decades ago, there was a split in the earth, that separated one half from the other. Years later, a strange fog became a wall between these two halves, that no one could cross. So there was no way to travel or communicate with either side. One side stayed somewhat similar to what we know. But things became like a police state. The rules were harsh and most people lived in fear. Especially those who developed strange new abilities after the Earth split. They were named The Others. Those that were found to have these abilities, were round up, usually never to be seen again. A young woman named Lori, was running for her life, about to be captured because of her gifts. She had nowhere else to run as they cornered her. The wall of fog was coming up fast before her. Should she attempt to try and cross it? Anything would be better than being caught! Well, having no other choice, she ran towards it and somehow SHE MADE IT! But she was on the verge of collapse. Before losing consciousness, she sees the most beautiful and surprising sight. A gorgeous man with the most lovely purple wings!

This book is the beginning of what is to be an incredible series and I can't wait to read more! Don't pass up your chance to read this amazing adventure and Love story!

The Eastern United States gets separated from the Western United States by a great chasm. Some years later, a fog descends over the WS (western side) and is impassable over the great divide. Until one day an eastern mutant woman, with special powers and poor choice in men, suddenly manages to break through to find that mutations which are rare in the eastern side are quite common on the western side where everyone has grown wings. Once she breaks through the barrier, the way of life seems to begin a descent into chaos. Nocturnal predatory beings suddenly come out into daylight, a tropical climate suddenly turns wintery, and dead bodies stops disintegrating into thin air. That does not impede the high levels of pheromones contaminating the atmosphere though. I found this story enjoyable but I felt that the flow was a bit choppy and some things went unexplained (but as there will be eight installments in the series, I guess answers can come later). I just wasn't captivated.

I know Christi Snow as a book blogger and while I followed along her success of completing NaNoWriMo and then publishing her first book, I never read anything she'd written because I'm not a big fan of military romances but when I saw Through the Veil I thought I had to give it a go. Now technically there was absolutely nothing wrong with Through the Veil. It's well written and draws you in to read however, it very much reminded me of the first book Ascension in Caris Roane's ascension series and I had to stop reading at 52%.

I absolutely love the idea for a series. The storyline keeps my interest and I can't wait to find out what happens next. There is so much going on that I feel overwhelmed. I want to find out about the main characters Lori and Marcus however Bethany, Aaron, Malcolm they all get in the way. There is so much to the story it makes me want to read the series to find out how the other characters fare. I am just not sure if I like the characters or if the story plot overshadows them.

I really enjoyed the world Snow created. I especially enjoyed how she created such diverse environments created on each side of the veil. The characters are each such distinct individuals but are all strong, capable and quite entertaining characters. I am really looking forward to he next book in this series.
