I’ve been on a bit of a crime thriller, murder mystery binge which brought me to The Founders. This is the first in the FBI Agent Kate Walsh series featuring Agent Kate Walsh and her partner, Declan James.

Set in Boston, the story introduces us to Kate and Declan and does a wonderful job of providing their backstories & history as we investigate a serial killer. The killer is leaving bodies along the city’s historic Freedom Trail and there seems to be a tie to the Revolutionary War.

As a descendent of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, it seems Agent Walsh may be on the killer’s list. The mystery was suspenseful, with plenty of red herrings and unexpected twists. The killer seems to be one step ahead of them.

Working with Detective Briggs from Boston PD, Walsh and Declan, reach out to the university, local newspaper and investigate a group known as The Founders. I enjoyed the way the author allowed us to follow along as they gathered clues, made deductions and caught the killer.

While not heavy on procedure, the tale felt grounded and pulled me in. Kate is interesting and I look forward to their next case. Jones wrapped up the case, gave us some closure on Declan’s personal issues and set us up for the next case, where they will head to Miami.

Claire Duncan narrates and did a delightful job of capturing Kate’s personality and those of Declan and others. Her pacing and tone work well for the story, and I’d listen to her again. The writing lends itself to the audio format, making listening an excellent choice. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

New series. Great story, great characters!

I first discovered Stacy M. Jones when I picked up a copy of the first book in her paranormal cozy mystery series through a BookFunnel Author’s Promotion. I became a fan of her work and was pleased to learn the series was included in KU. When I discovered she had a second mystery series, I was pleasantly surprised and downloaded the first book in the series. I couldn’t believe the author was so versatile in her writing. The series are both so good and nothing similar to the other rather than they are all well-written and well-told stories. I have read all the stories in both series and anxiously await each new story. Side note, I became an ARC Team Member of both series about half way through the series. When I received an opportunity to become an ARC Team Member of even yet another series from Ms. Jones, I jumped on the chance. Again, I was blown away by the author’s versatility to create another series that is so vastly different from the other mysteries she pens. A new favorite thriller series by one of my favorite authors.

Things I like about the book:
1) Well-written and well-told story.
2) Believable, interesting, and likeable characters.
3) Respectful of law enforcement officers.
4) Interesting relationship between h and H.
5) An action-packed page-turner.
6) A thriller mystery with just enough twists and turns to make you second guess if you really know whodunit before the big reveal.
7) A clean read.
a. No swearing.
b. No sensual situations.
c. The violence needed for plot is not graphic carnage that haunts me after reading.
8) A stand-alone story that is part of a series.

Things I did not like about the book:
1) N/A – I like it all!

I received an advance reader copy of this book from the author. This gift did not affect my review of the book. This review is my voluntary and honest opinion.

FOUNDERS scramble, to find common ideology.
Seeking resistance, to carry out mission.

Without realizing, comes at great cost.
So manipulation, will set the pace.

Set rules, that all agree on.
That is, how it is done

Along comes, two tightly knit friends.
Both dedicated, to see it through.

Follow along, as agents butt heads.
Suggested plans, put carefully into action.

See if, it all works out.
And maybe, how could do better.

Not going to lie, I was surprised on how much I liked this book, I honestly wasn't too sure on reading the synopsis.

Now I won't lie and say I understood any of the history, not much of a history buff, but It was easy enough to follow along and detailed.

I really like Katie and Declan, now to be fair lately I've realllyyyy enjoyed newbie FBI agents, but it was good to read someone whose been at it awhile. (Though if anyone could point me to newbie female agent books that would always be welcome, I've been struggling to find some and there's not group or list for it.)

I like how cozy Kate is, especially her home, it sounds lovely, gives me sherlock baker street vibes, her and Declan give of married vibes, and I love it.

The case was fun, easy to understand, and I wasn't expecting all of it.

Pretty excited to read the next book!

The first book in this series featuring FBI Special Agent Kate Walsh and her partner, Declan, her work partner and lodger. Kate is feeling worn out from cases involving travel abroad and starts to question if she wishes to remain working in this way, and perhaps it is time for a break. Then murders start occurring in Boston, her home town and involving historical sites along a trail following the Revolutionary War sites of interest. Lots of cooperation with the Boston detectives and the investigation works into Harvard University and a historical society known as the Founders.

The plot was quite "see-through" as the perpetrator was sidelined early on, and this often used tactic by the author was not hidden well enough. I liked Kate Walsh as a character but Declan was "slimy" and overbearing. Throw him out quickly, Kate! This audible edition was spoiled by the terrible voices used for the male characters. 3 stars.

The Founders by Stacy M. Jones 8/27/2021 Kindle

This is the first of a series featuring FBI investigators in Boston. I almost put it down after the opening scene when we encounter government men pounding on the door in the dark of night. They barge in the house uninvited, flash credentials and announce to a college girl the death of both her parents. I can’t believe any law enforcement officials at any level would be near a crass in delivering this heart breaking proclamation.

Jump ahead eighteen years. She is one of two FBI players, Declan, of the Boston office and Kate, very a wealthy and highly intelligent floater on leave. She owns a twenty-five million dollar Bean Town brown stone. She is reluctantly called back into service, with Declan as a partner. The pair is called to a Colonial burying ground where body has been discovered, propped against Paul Revere’s tombstone. Attached is a note to Kate, purportedly signed by a British Revolutionary War General. Similar murders follow, each tied to our war for independence.

Generally, I enjoyed the book, especially the familiar settings. There were errors, “went we first when there”, and sloppy police work, but I’ll try the next installment and see if I can like these characters a little better. I’ll give it a soft recommendation.

Good start to a series but lacked a wow - read on KU

The plot to this book is unique. Revenge is not a typical motive for serial killers. It seems like a stretch that someone would want revenge for something that happened so very long ago, but people do strange things all the time.

A strong point is I didn't ever read something and think a LEO would never so something like that. Proper procedure seemed to be followed.

One thing that irked me is the constant use of the name Det. Briggs instead of spelling out the word. They wouldn't have called him "det". They would have probably just said Briggs or said the whole word. It was used over and over again.

While all the elements of the story were there, the author just didn't seem like a story teller. It was not riveting. It was easy to put down.

Hopefully, the series will improve.

Too Long

An okay premise, but not a book that truly holds one's interest, I skipped from the 54% reading point to the 90% mark without much loss of continuity. The American founding fathers angle should have been interesting but was not. The killer's motive was very farfetched and more of a mental health issue than a supportable cause. Gullible people fall for weird ideas all the time, but I do not believe that anyone, even a milquetoast accountant and an immature teaching assistant, would follow a nutcase advocating the return of America to British rule after 250 years. The revenge killing aspect was ludicrous. The main character, Kate, is likeable however and I would consider reading her second installment.

This is a decent effort, but there are way too many places where the writing is underwhelming and cliche.

For instance, when coming upon a scene that includes strewn papers and blood, Kate, A Harvard-trained FBI profiler wunderkind says: “I can’t say by looking that there was a struggle, but something happened here.”

Uhh . . . no kidding! That observation is so lacking, it actually made me laugh.

There are other examples, but I don't want to get too close to revealing spoilers.

This is the 1st novel for this series and follows the prequel 'The Curators".

This story begins with Kate dreaming of when she received notification of her parents death. The story fast forwards to the present time where Kate is in Boston. She has requested time-off to rest from all her trips. Unknown to Kate, Declan, her partner has been staying at her home since he had a fight with his wife. Kate and Declan get called to a murder scene because the victim had a note which was addressed to her. This begins a detail search looking for what turns out to be a serial killer. Each of the killings have something to do with revenge for the defeat that Thomas Gage suffered in the American Revolution.

As the search continue there are more murders that occurred. Kate had an idea that she couldn't quite bring out so she started looking at files that her father had. The list of suspects that they were looking into were primarily associated with "The Founders" organization.

Events near the end of the book will bring the reader closer to discovering who the individual responsible.

The story was done quite well and the description of the evidence trail that the FBI/Boston Police followed was done so the reader could follow along. To discover who the responsible party was, his reasoning in addition to Declan's resolution of his fight with his wife, then you must read this book. You won't be disappointed.

Loved loved loved it! I especially loved how the killer used American history to do his killings. I don't think I've ever read a book like this before. I loved the characters of Kate and Declan, even though I find Declan at times a little too much. The things he does in the beginning of the book are just a little over the top to me, things that “normal” friends/people wouldn’t just do as simply as he did.

The side characters (the detective, etc) are also very likable. You can see how professional they are and how seriously they take their work. Det. Briggs is working together with the FBI, which I like a lot. There isn’t this “Oh the FBI takes over my case and I can only look on and can’t be involved anymore”. This is so different from what I normally read and see on TV shows. I hope he’ll be part of future books, because he’s very good at what he does.

Stacy really kept me on my toes and every time I thought okay, this is the one, this is the killer, something happened to throw me off again and still keep the story very interesting. Not every author manages to do that. The way the book turned out was totally unexpected!

For a first book in a new series, I think I’m already addicted and can’t wait to find out more about Kate. What’s going to happen to her next? Where will she wind up?

The founders is a new chapter in the writing career for Stacy M. Jones. Its different from her normal cozy mysteries but don't let that fool you, it's still top notch edge of your seat writing! We head into the book with a dream of the past. Kate is home after cramming for finals. There's a knock at her door and agents are telling her her mother and father died in a bombing. When she wakes up she is confronted with reality. Her life is a mess. She's always traveling with the FBI and only has one close friend, her partner at the FBI. She's supposed to be on leave to figure out whatpath she wants to take next when a killer leaves her a note. She's drug into a serial killer case in her home town that targets her and others. The killer claims that America needs to be under England's rule again and seems extremely wronged because we aren't. Kate and Declan keep getting pointed to a group called the founders and their leader but things aren't adding up and they can't seem to catch a break.
This book has more twists and turns then a maze and will leave you guessing til the very end. As always, you can't go wrong picking up a book written by Stacy M. Jones!

Gah! Too much history, I feel like I was in school again 🤦🏽‍♀️

FBI Agent Kate Walsh is one of the best at interrogation, at getting confessions, finding killers. She joined the FBI after grad school and since, she's been all over the world from stateside to overseas. When Kate gets back to stateside and back home in Boston she takes a leave of absence. While on leave, she gets called to a murder scene that upturns everything

- It was a decent book. My head kinda hurts from having to Google ALOT. I read the preface before opening the book but still, I did not realize this would have so much history...gah! I'm a visual learner not a book learner so history was a difficult class to take in school. Take to me a battlefield and I'll enjoy listening but give me a book and I'll 😴. I didn't relate to any character. I can't say I liked any character for that matter. They were kinda - bland. The BIG climax was a dud. And it was ten minutes left of the book. I think the big OMG moments need to happen sooner than that. The only reason I finished was because I wanted to know the killer. That's it.

If y ou haven't read any of Jones' work yet - and why haven't you - this is an excellent place to start!

Kate Walsh is home, on extended leave. She needs peace, and quiet, and time spent in her own place, doing whatever she wants – or doesn’t want.

But Declan needs a place to stay. And before they can even get into the logistics – he’s been using her place while she’s been away – the office calls. And the situation is literally in her backyard with a note left specifically for Kate!

She and Declan are off on what seems an impossible mission – find out who the killer is AND what he wants before more people die. Can they do it?

I love this series and its characters. I love the way Jones weaves a tale that takes you in and holds you there till the threads are all tied up. You will too!

"The Founders" by Stacy M. Jones is a mystery novel that explores the dark secrets of a prestigious institution. When a gruesome murder shakes the community, the investigation uncovers a complex web of lies, deceit, and hidden agendas.

I read The Founders from start to finish, but unfortunately, the experience was dampened as I figured out the identify the killer early on. From the moment the culprit was introduced, I was convinced of their guilt, and this prediction didn't waver. As a result, the suspense and tension that typically drive a thriller were largely absent for me.

While the lack of surprise lessened my engagement, I did appreciate the well-crafted characters. They were relatable and engaging, making me wish the plot had been more unpredictable.

Overall, it was not a bad read, but the predictability prevented me from fully enjoying it.

This is the first in a series. If you love history, and a great murder mystery, this one is for you.
I really enjoyed it. Kate Walsh is an FBI agent and right now, she just wanted to take some time
off away from all the murders.

While she is home in Boston, she is contacted by her boss on a killing that has taken place in her town, in one of the historic places, and the victim was left with a note for Kate. Kate's parents go all the well back to the Revolutionary War and it seems that this killer is targeting relatives of those
patriots.

Great book, not to be missed!!!

Saw this on Kindle Unlimited, after it came up on my Facebook page, and that it would be a interesting read. It was, not a great read, but good. I found it hard to get involved too much with Kate or Declan, the main characters; just because (IMO) they weren't real likeable. The story was good, a serial killer placing victims at historical sites in Boston. But, again, I was struggling to care about the victims or the investigators. At another time. I may give "Kate Walsh" another try, but it may be a while.

This is a new series featuring FBI agents Kate Walsh and Declan James. This was a very enjoyable book. The characters are likable and pretty well developed. The story was interesting and kept me engaged to the end. I did guess the killer relatively early on, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment in the least. This is a well done introduction to the series. I’m looking forward to Kate and Declan’s next case.

The Founders is the first full book in the FBI Agent Kate Walsh series and is a fabulous follow-up to The Curator.

I absolutely loved this book. The characters are strong, intelligent, and interesting. The story is gripping and kept me on the edge of my seat until the end. This book has multiple murders, action, suspense, danger, and intrigue. I can't wait for the next book in this fascinating series.

Excellent storyline and characters. Great historical knowledge by the author. This goes for both the Founders and the Curators books. Since I wasn't able to leave a review for Curators anywhere, I'm adding it here. Another excellent story. Just wasn't sure where in the series it belonged. Definitely would like to see a continuation of it. Great job Stacy on both these works. I'm off to read the Miami Ripper.

Interesting story line

The book has an interesting premise and the storyline itself is quite intriguing and well crafted. My issue is with the writing style. It is sophomoric or unrefined. It seems more like a high schooler’s final project or a college submission. I wanted to get past it and just enjoy the story, but I couldn’t. I do have the next book in the series and I will give Kate Walsh (Stacy M. Jones) another chance but I have set my expectations low.

Has potential

I am still looking for the reason for the murders other than settling a 200 + year old grudge. It just seemed to be so weak and hard to believe anyone would go along with the killer. I'm still needing another motive. So disappointing! Egad, tut tut, etc.

That being said, I liked the chemistry tween the FBI agents. I liked the relationship the agents Kate and Declan had with Boston police detective Briggs.

This is a fast paced FBI thriller set in Boston. Looks like there are 8 books in this series to date. The tone is upbeat with plenty of action and the characters are lively with the plot sometimes over the top. I will most likely try another.
There is a good measure of Revolutionary War references mixed with a questionable agenda for one wacky murderer who is difficult to unmask.

I found this story as thrilling & mystifying as the movie National Treasure. There are as many suspects as there are murders. Kate & Declan, along with Det. Briggs, have their hands full figuring out how the murders are connected to the Revolutionary War. I love the complexity of this story. I received an ARC. This is my voluntary opinion.

I don't know much about the American Revolution and so don't know many of the names or places associated with the event. That didn't matter.

The killer doesn't just use one method and mixes known and unknown victims. FBI Agents Kate Walsh and Declan James are in their home town of Boston working with the police to solve the crimes.

Do you love the movie National Treasure? Do you love a puzzling serial killer search? If you love history’s mysteries, this is your book! Kate Walsh & Declan James will be your new FBI dynamic duo. I was instantly sucked in and intrigued by the lessons of the past and the serial killer in the present. Fast paced and highly addictive. I’m eagerly awaiting the next release.

Kate Walsh's series

I've read the first three books of the Kate Walsh series. Captivating from page one. I didn't want to put the books down. I was so curious about the ending and the chapters are quite lengthy, that I skipped ahead several chapters for the ending. Extremely well written, but too many chapters for me.

I really enjoyed the characters, setting, and overall story- until the end. Detective Walsh is supposed to be a top profiler and instead of working out the crime, she just accidentally stumbles upon the killer, having had no prior idea it was them. I found the way the story wrapped up very odd and unsatisfying.

I really loved this book and this literally didn't give away any of the twists until the last page. A real God job done by the author here and I am on to the next book.

One slight thing that I had while reading this book is they could have involved more of Det. Briggs even though this is Kate and Declan's book.
