Suddenly One Summer

Rate this book
From the New York Times bestselling author of It Happened One Wedding comes a novel about a man and a woman whose summer is about to get very, very steamy…

Divorce lawyer Victoria Slade has seen enough unhappy endings to swear off marriage forever. That doesn't mean she's opposed to casual dating—just not with her cocky new neighbor, who is as gorgeous and tempting as he is off-limits. But once she agrees to take on his sister's case, she's as determined to win as ever—even if that means teaming up with Ford…

Investigative journalist Ford Dixon is bent on finding the man who got his sister pregnant and left her high and dry. He's willing to partner with Victoria, despite the fact that the beautiful brunette gets under his skin like no other woman. He might not be looking to settle down, but there's no denying the scorching attraction between them. Still, the more time he spends with Victoria, the more he realizes that the one woman as skeptical about love as he is might be the only woman he could really fall for…

In this “neighbors-to-lovers”, Julie James bring us a divorce lawyer who doesn’t believe in love, and a guy who has no intention of commitment. And when they start to get closer and having a “just sex” relationship, their views will quickly change.
I love Julie James books. Not overly steamy and sometimes overly romantic, but ALWAYS amazingly written and both a great background story I always know what I can count with when I read this author.
So when a need a low-drama book, engaging that will leave me hooked from the first page I always choose Julie’s books and I’ve never been disappointed.
If you’re looking for a slow-paced romance book in its purest form, this book is an amazing choice.

I enjoyed this one. In fact, I have enjoyed all the Julie James books that I have read. A strong, independent heroine. A sexy, hero. There is never too much drama in her books.

FORD

VICTORIA

I know I usually can go on and on in some of my reviews but there is something about these books that I sort of put the bare minimum as I kind of expect that everyone will know that they are good books. Does that even make sense? Anyway, a bit pressed for time today.

Suddenly One Summer: A sublime 5 star read that further cements Julie James prowess as an author and and a literary inspiration for a lot of women

I'm struggling with formulating a review for this book due to my attachment and having subsequently just finished it. Obviously, you readers understand the emotional flood that can happen post a perfect book. Either way, I'll try to muddle through this review. I haven't done a serious review in eons, but this book was worth breaking my hiatus.

One reason, thats right ONE REASON, you should not just read but BUY this book

There comes a time, well...multiple times, in a romance reader's life when he has to defend the genre of romance. There are so many stereotypes of bad writing, purple prose, damsels in distress, alpha male, bodice ripper, "its porn" type tropes that assail the genre. However, its books like this that make you want to flap about and say "THIS, THIS IS WHY I READ ROMANCE"

The reason why you should buy, read, reread, review, and recommend this book as well as her others is because there is, in my very biased opinion, no author's work that better encompasses the 21st century american woman.

The women in her books are strong, accomplished women. However, not once does James make them have to apologize for their success, their ambition, or their career. She doesn't feel the need to over explain their beauty or clothing , or say some odd thing like "Despite being a successful lawyer, so and so was suprisngly feminine."

That is such an important thing in media. Don't get me wrong, I read a plethora of romance books from historical, to suspense, to western. However, I'm harsh when it comes to contemporary romance. I've always felt that contemporary romance is one of the hardest due to the small window before the book becomes unrelateable or very unrealistic. Julie has that perfect ability to tap into some honest to god real problems, and traits that women have.

Victoria, the main character in this book is someone who a lot of woman can relate to. If you aren't her you at least know someone who is, or have a facet of your personality that she encompasses.

Julie James books put hope in my heart that a woman can unapologetically be herself, have ambitions, be successful, confident, and still reach for that happiness that society paints as elusive. I like the fact that in her books THIRTY ISNT OLD.

Dont get me wrong, if a woman wants to stay at home and focus more on family and other aspects of life. GIRL, YOU BETTER DO IT. However, I believe there is a lack of contemporary romance books that display the successful woman like Julie James does.

THEN, to just put the icing on top of the cake.....

The men she writes are for once in their life actually confident in who they are. Its nice reading a realistic Alpha hero on contemp romance. He likes a little control in bed, he gets jealous, protective, horny at moments notice...and yet is completely fine with the heroine having a life, and goals, and wants no part in tearing them down. He never patronizes her or tells her what is good for her. Its delicious.

Anyways, don't get me wrong. I'm assuredly biased. As a 20 something year old woman on the cusp of my career, full of opinions, ideas, and aspirations...I find myself constantly feeling the need to chose between love and life. I think a lot of it has to do with women and the biological clock. Either way, Julie James books give me hope that I can have it all, just like men. She writes the type of books that I want my little sister or daughter to read, when they are old enough ( not that I listened to my mother as i snuck in every book with a sex scene I could haha)

Anyways, Dont know if this review is well written or makes any since but here it is. I love this author and all of her books, with this lovely addition being no exception.

This recent book by Julie James made me think of homemade salad dressing. It is not always the easiest to make; when everything blends together just so... allowing all the flavors to marry, the results are sublime.

These characters were like that... sometimes they were hit or miss... almost just right... other times they had all of the mixtures of sass, wit, warmth, and caring just right.

Julie James writes so that we are on the ride from the start. Her hand is deft and she knows these characters. They are not caught up in a life-threatening situation this time... No, this time, the stakes are much higher...

This is a tale of two grown people who were severely damaged as kids by their parents' behavior.

Ford had an alcoholic father... never knowing if he was going to have the hero dad who would play with him, love and care for him or the hungover brute, the one who would yell, drive him away, and sometimes smack him with the back of his hand. Somehow with the consistent love of his mother and sister, he turned out to be a decent guy. He also was gifted in writing allowing for a career with the Chicago Tribune. There he learned the ropes and now was an investigative reporter.

Victoria's story is equally as damaging; a father who left her mom to be with his new family... never reaching out to her again and a mom who was deeply depressed having Victoria to fend for herself at 10. The kicker is this 10 years old discovers her mom...out...with a suicide attempt and makes vows to always be able to control things so it doesn't happen again. Now this woman, a successful divorce lawyer, has her work, some close friends, and ebooks. This is what she does as she will never allow herself to feel open and raw for anyone again. She sees too much in her line of work to allow that.

As you can see... these two are a match made in noncommitment heaven...

We have all the pieces and a unique almost meet for them to see each other and maybe under different circumstances, be interested in each other. The fleeting moment of attraction was definitely there.

But a conversation with a stranger interrupts this two first meet...setting in motion assumptions which carry over throughout the book. Oh, most of the time, things get straightened out...but in the back of their minds... those assumptions linger.

There is a strong multi-layered plot that causes Ford and Victoria to work together and become closer. When they are closer, Ms. James does her expert thing... she knows how to create sexual tension and then delivers the sexy times. Ford and Victoria are good together; equal in the want and pleasure. Two grown-ups having terrific sex. Two grown-ups who have no idea how to handle feelings.

Overall it was a fun read with a strong life lesson attached. James did not pretty up the issues. The characters had messy stuff that needed to be worked out and I liked that she did not make them perfect. It did make them not as easy to love at first... but later there was more warmth and understanding of who they were and why.

Overall a strong read from a solid author.

Really enjoyed this one. It may not be my favourite JJ book, but the humour and banter she brings into her stories are always fun to read.

The only reason why I haven't rated 5 star is because it didn't have the wow-unforgettable factor. This is definitely one of my favourite series and I'll recommend it if you are looking for a fun read with a bit of suspense.

Suddenly One Summer was a one of my favorite types of romances: hate that turns into begrudging like and admiration, eventually turning into unexpected love. With a lot of snarky, clever banter in between, of course!

The moment Ford and Victoria lock eyes from afar, it’s lust at first sight. Unfortunately, their encounter is interrupted and the two go their separate ways, or so they think. Unknown to either, Victoria is the new next-door neighbor to Ford, and the antics broadcast through thin walls has left less than a stellar impression on her. They get off to bad start when mistaken assumptions are made on both sides. Being next door they have numerous opportunities to snark and snap at each other, dancing around an obvious attraction and making me laugh in the process.

When Ford’s sister, Nicole shows up crying with a small baby in tow, Victoria, a family law attorney, steps up and offers her services to help. Working together to locate Nicole’s baby daddy, Ford witnesses the softer side of Victoria, glimpses the good, caring woman she is on the inside. Victoria sees a sweet protective side to Ford, going all out to help his sister in need, and things begin to change and heat up between these two!

Victoria was smart, successful, and sassy, but she was also guarded and I really couldn’t blame her. Her parents, the two people who were supposed to unconditionally love and support her, both hurt her profoundly. Being a divorce attorney and witnessing the demise of so many marriages only underscored her feelings on wedded bliss:

“I like keeping things simple and fun. No obligations, no expectations, no endgame of a marriage, two-point-five kids, and a minivan in the suburbs. I have self-selected out of the happily-ever-after rat race, so to speak.”

Aww, Victoria….*sniff*

Ford was a sweetheart, determined to help his sister. I loved the babysitting scene, it realistically captures the havoc a tiny baby can bring, and I was cracking up throughout! Ford also had his own baggage, growing up with an alcoholic father full of unpredictable mood swings. He keeps clear of complicated relationships, commitment not being part of his vocabulary. Victoria should be Ford’s dream come true, but something about her stirs up unexpected and deeper feelings.

It was a pleasure to witness Victoria and Ford change their thoughts on love and work toward their own happily-ever-after!

Suddenly One Summer
was a signature Julie James romance: smart, classy, and full of hot chemistry! A total recommend!

3.5 Ford – He-Can-Find-Me-Any-Time Stars

Suddenly One Summer is a standalone novel and isn’t part of any series. However, Ford is Brook’s best friend in Love Irresistibly, which is part of the FBI/ US Attorney series. I would label Suddenly One Summer a spin-off book.

Suddenly One Summer starts out with a bam and I got really into it. Victoria is a successful divorce lawyer and she gets robbed. This freaks her out so much that she moves, but her condo won’t be ready until the end of the summer. So for the summer she leases a place.

Ford happens to live next door to her. Ford also likes to have guests over late at night and they make lots of noise. Victoria can hear everything.

The first 30% of the book is really cute and funny. Ford is a horrible person to live next door to. He’s loud, he doesn’t care about Victoria and all Victoria wants is a good night’s sleep. I couldn’t stop smiling. I really liked the banter between Ford and Victoria in the beginning. I found Ford kind of a jerk, but we love that right? I also felt for Victoria, because of her robbery she is very anxious and it’s hard for her to sleep through the night.

Ford’s sister, Nicole has a baby and Nicole doesn’t know who the father is. Nicole indirectly gets Victoria to help Nicole find the baby daddy. I liked that Nicole kind of help Ford and Victoria build this odd friendship.

Ford and Victoria work together in finding the baby daddy and this is where most of the “bonding” happens in the read. Suddenly One Summer reads more like a chick-lit or woman’s fiction romance novel, than a NA read. There are steamy scenes, but it’s not really the focal point of the story.

The heavy interaction between Ford and Victoria starts around mid-mark of the book and the pace picks up a bit. I really enjoyed the side characters too. I would love to read Nicole’s book. I’m a sucker for single moms, so that’s my thing.

Victoria also gets panic attacks in the subway or in confined spaces where she can’t escape. So she works with a therapist to overcome these issues. This is another reason why she is so guarded. She doesn’t want anyone to know this. She also gets these “attacks” during stressful situations. She’s a mess, but she works really hard to cover-up that she isn’t.

Once Ford notices the sweeter side of Victoria, he works hard to break down Victoria’s walls. You start to fall for Ford just a little more.

Overall, if you are a fan of Julie James, I think you won’t be disappointed. Just know this one is a bit different from the FBI/ US Attorney series.

I yield, the book wins. After picking it up and putting it down for more than three weeks, it's time to admit defeat and move on.

Well eleven chapters in and I have the impression nothing meaningful has happened save for the heroine, Victoria Slade the divorce lawyer, moving next door to the hero, Ford Dixon the investigative reporter, and bringing her self-centred persona in the same condo.
The dialogues felt forced and stilted, just like the narrative style and the characterisations trying to impress me with flat attempts at rom-com.
When my eyes began to glaze as I imagined a near future where Victoria would start "prissying" out on poor Ford while throwing hyphenated strings of insults at him because he didn't properly realign the accent pillows on her faux Edwardian couch, I knew I had to call it quits.

Since only my first taste of Julie James' writing, I don't exclude giving a chance to some of her other stories in the future (better backlist, maybe?), but this book is really not for me.

What the hell happened?!
I had high, high expectations for this book, but that's nothing new really. In every other novel by Julie James, I was all giggly and swoony and I would read the book in a heartbeat.
List of priorities in my life goes:
1) a book by Julie James,
2) chocolate,
3) shoes.

So yeah, I had high expectations with a reason. I remember last year, I was hungover on It Happened One Wedding for days after. I've read Something About You and A Lot Like Love maybe five or six times. I love the books that much.

But Suddenly One Summer?! I have no idea what happened. The chemistry between the characters, the banter, the humor that are so recognizable for James' writing style are MIA in this book. It feels as if she almost half-heartedly wrote it.

If it weren't for the fact that Julie James wrote it and my utter disappointment in it, Suddenly One Summer would be totally forgettable. And I hate it.

Julie James is always a guaranteed good read for me. Nothing about this particular book stands out as being particularly amazing, but it's just solid. James is a good writer. She always makes me like both of her protagonists, and I root for them and their friends throughout the story. The neighbor aspect for these two added a nice twist to the sexual tension. Constant proximity didn't get old either. Sexy, cute, with a dash of meaningful, thoughtful content.

It is a cute story, but the plot and the characters seem to lack magic. Ford is a nice guy and Victoria is a very successful lawyer. Both have problem ditching commitment issues. Overall, nothing really stand out in this book.

About the series
While the author doesn't include this book in the FBI/US Attorney series (neither of the main characters is an FBI agent or a US attorney), it is connected through several of the characters. Ford Dixon and his best friend, Brooke Parker, were featured in Love, Irresistibly. The story stands alone very well. However, if you're as manic as I am about character continuity, consider this as #6 in the series sequence.

Quick summary
Ford Dixon is an investigative journalist who's out with his friends one evening. Victoria Slade (a divorce attorney) and her friends are out on the same evening at the same restaurant. While they share a "look" and a "connection," forces work against them and they don't meet or pursue the possibility. Through a series of misunderstandings, both develop unflattering opinions of each other that are exacerbated when fate decides to throw another curve...she ends up being his new, temporary neighbor in an adjacent loft apartment.

What I enjoyed
I'm not normally a big fan of misunderstandings that seem to drag out unnecessarily so I was a little leery about this one. What makes it a standout is the snappy, witty repartee that had me often smiling and occasionally laughing out loud. When they're thrown together to work on Ford's sister's case, it provides the foundation for the relationship to turn and a sexy romance to brew. And, it introduces a secondary storyline that I found just as interesting.

The narration
Karen White does a fine job in pacing the story, delivering really good character distinctions and adding just the right inflections and tones where needed. I enjoyed her performance.

The bottom line
I really liked the story, Ford and Victoria, the romance, the secondary storyline and the audio performance. It reminded me of a well done romantic comedy that was perfectly cast. I'm also glad that I chose to listen to it versus reading the eBook as it just iced a really nice book experience. 4.5 stars

Boring. Limited character development. Touted as a beach read but apart from saying it takes place over the summer that's about it. Misleading cover --there's no beach or walk by the water. The story is dull and the romance is superficial. There are some funny snarky lines but few and far between. The ending is so rushed you have a what the ?? moment. A bit of a dud this one.

I’ve been waiting and waiting for Ford’s book, and now that I’ve devoured Suddenly One Summer in one sitting, I can officially say: he’s my favorite Julie James hero. And she writes some damn fine heroes, so I don’t say this lightly. The book itself ranks up with my favorites, too (along with Something About You, A Lot Like Love, and Love Irresistibly). As you can expect with a Julie James book, there’s a smart, sexy romance, intelligent and likeable characters, and of course some sass thrown in for good measure.

Ford and Victoria don’t exactly start off on the right foot. She’s his new neighbor, and her first impression is that he’s got a revolving door of women and he has a habit of being rather noisy. When Victoria lets him know just what she thinks, he’s quick to throw in his own barbs, and from then on the two can’t help but to antagonize each other whenever they meet. Except, things start to change when Victoria – a divorce lawyer – decides to help Ford’s sister obtain child support for her four-month old baby. They join efforts – he to track down the man – and suddenly they are spending quite a bit of time together. The attraction is ever present, but so is the fact that they’re beginning to get along… really well. But if this is to be more than a casual summer fling, Victoria and Ford need to let go of their fear to commit.

My favorite part about the book is the characters. I loved Victoria for her saucy comments, her intelligence, and her deep-seated but rarely shown vulnerability. She’s struggling with a panic disorder, the catalyst for which was a break-in to her home, and she starts seeing a therapist. Therapy in books doesn’t always work for me, but here it’s a wonderful way to showcase her character growth. It’s so easy to sympathize with her as we witness her realizing harsh truths about herself and watching her overcome her fears. The only quibble I had was that she uses her work as an excuse to prove that marriage won’t ever be right for her, when as a divorce lawyer of course she’s only ever going to see its ugly side. But I was definitely rooting for her to start seeing things differently.

Ford… well, he steals the show. Charming, sexy, funny, inquisitive, confident. He’s the whole package. I really just loved his personality so much. He has his own hang-ups about relationships, but I think it’s clear early on that Victoria is different for him. I like that he was the one who started to fall first even when he’s hesitant to admit it out loud. The chemistry between Ford and Victoria is off the charts, so it was no hardship for me to believe these two commitment-phobes were perfect for each other. Their fun banter, the sexual tension between them, the build up to their very steamy first kiss, their more tender moments… I loved all of it. They make a fantastic couple. My one complaint? I wanted more. Victoria and Ford don’t properly meet until 20% into the book and there are quite a few subplots outside of the romance working through the story, so I just felt like I needed more time with them together. What we do get, though, is very, very good.

Now I’m curious to see who Julie is going to write about next! Most of her books connect through the characters, and I’d love to see Victoria’s friends get their own stories. Whoever it will be, I'm certain to be excited. If only we didn’t have to wait a year in between each of her books. :)

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for approving my request in exchange for an honest review!

What Worked:
✔️ Engaging Premise – A divorce lawyer and an investigative journalist teaming up? Great setup with lots of potential.
✔️ Sharp Dialogue – As always, Julie James delivers witty, intelligent banter that keeps things entertaining.
✔️ Solid Side Characters – I actually found myself more interested in the supporting cast than the main romance.

What Didn’t Click for Me:
❌ The Main Couple – I just didn’t feel the chemistry. Their dynamic wasn’t as compelling as others in the series.
❌ Lack of Emotional Depth – The romance felt a bit flat compared to James’ other books, and I didn’t feel as invested in their relationship.

🎶"What Ifs" – Kane Brown ft. Lauren Alaina 🎶 "Peter Pan" – Kelsea Ballerini

Another fine hit and my favorite by James so far—though I've only read two others, really. Still, that's three four-star reads and that's no small thing.

This story was more believable than the others and it flowed a bit better too. Plus, it had no drawbacks or quirks I had to get past to enjoy the story.

That said, I had a bit of a hard time with the protagonists. I'm not a huge fan of the commitment-phobe and having both so severely commitment impaired made it even less enjoyable. Still, commitment issues aside, they were both just lovely (kind and warm and fun) and having common cause (through Ford's sister) really helped smooth past a lot of the down-side of their shared issues. I'm still not sure I buy the final turn around completely, though, given how far on the leave-'em spectrum they both were.

In the end, it was a fast, light read that I had a hard time putting down. Add James' trademark humor and I was very entertained.

A note about Steamy: Not quite a mid-level steam for me. There's one full-on explicit sex scene and two others that start but then fade fast. It was exactly what was needed for the emotional arc of the story, so well-done, I think.

Victoria Slade is pretty cynical about romance. Not only does she see the pitfalls as a divorce lawyer, she also has personal experience of how bad marriages can end with her own parents. When she temporarily moves into a condo next to Investigative journalist Ford Dixon, they get off on the wrong foot when Victoria gets the wrong impression with the multitude of women she sees him with.

Ford really doesn't have a harem like Victoria thinks and he's pretty put off by her assumptions. When his sisters ends up needing Victoria's help, Ford and Victoria have to spend a bit of time together for her sister's case. This is where you will see a change in their relationship and the fun begin.

This was another entertaining book in the FIB/US Attorney series. I've been borrowing the audio books on the Audible Romance Package. The narrator has been the same throughout the series and she is fantastic. I really think she enhances the experience of the story. On to the next book!

Blog rating: B

Victoria Slade hasn’t had a great experience in her new home. After her home is broken into with Victoria there and hiding in the closet, she doesn’t feel safe and buys a home at another location that won’t be ready for a few months. In the meantime, she moves into a condo temporarily and right next door to reporter Ford Dixon, a man who unknowingly makes a really bad first impression. Victoria doesn’t want anything to do with Ford, but that doesn’t remain the case for long when Victoria agrees to help Ford’s sister track down her baby’s father for child support. Now, not only is she seeing Ford more often than she’d like but she’s working with him on tracking down the unknown father and getting up close and personal with the sexy reporter, much to Ford’s delight.

Ford saw Victoria across a bar one night and was instantly taken with her. Little did he know she’d turn out to be his new next door neighbor and that she’d have some very pointed opinions of him and his “cavalcade” of women coming and going through his door. He, of course, has a great (and truthful) explanation for everything she sees but it doesn’t put him in the best light and he’s got an uphill battle from the start getting Victoria to come around. As they work together more on his sister’s case he gets to see the real Victoria. She’s not just a hard core divorce attorney with no sense of humor. She’s a compassionate woman who’s fighting hard for people who are going through one of the toughest times in their life. She’s also someone who’s battling past demons which she tries to keep secret, but one crazy train ride with Ford brings it all out in the open. Fainting in the hot hero’s arm does that *grin*. Ultimately, both Ford and Victoria had preconceived beliefs about each other that turned out to be so far from who they really are, it was fun to see them act more and more like themselves the more they were around each other.

Julie James writes some of the most fun and likeable characters in contemporary romance today. Victoria and Ford are two people I’d want to be friends with. They’re fun, they’re hard working and together they were pretty damn sexy. I can’t say though that their story had that special spark that I’ve come to love and expect from James’ leading characters. There was just a little something missing that made me not fall head over heels in love with it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun, it’s completely entertaining and enjoyable, just not a story that stood out. The ending also felt a bit rushed to me. I was wishing for another chapter or something to help bring a little more closure overall to the story.

What I really did love were the scenes stealers in Ford’s two best friends and all around funny guys. I also liked seeing Brooke show up in her best friend role to Ford and give him some good advice he needed to hear regarding Victoria.

I’ve always said if you want the best in contemporary romance, pick up a Julie James book and Suddenly One Summer fits that ticket. It might not be my own personal favorite, but it’s impossible to not enjoy the fun banter and sexiness that is Ford and Victoria.

Readers were forewarned that this one would be a bit different from the popular FBI related series. I figure sometimes different is a good thing. The same old/same old sometimes just gets plain old and boring. Well, maybe not in the case of James's books -- because I've never grown tired or stopped loving each and every one of those. But I'm not opposed to trying something new and refreshing, especially from an auto-buy and favorite author. So bring it on Julie James - bring it on!

And she did -- and it's really a good, solid read. I like both main characters who play off one another in lots of fun-to-read witty and sexy banter. Of course, you've got to expect that they'll both carry a little bag full of angst and a few bruised feelings. She's a female family law attorney and he's an investigative reporter. You can only imagine (because I'm not about to tell you) the troubles they can come up with to keep you cemented to your chair as you read the story they have to tell. Certainly the fact that they both are ridiculously against ever putting themselves in a happily-ever-after situation only makes it more fun to watch as the mighty fall.

There's also a great secondary cast to add some extra layers to the story as well. One happens to be our investigative reporter's sister, who is an unwed mother trying to locate the sperm donor from a one nightstand. I'll admit I might have gotten a little choked up at this situation.

All in all, Julie James has done it again! She never disappoints and although this isn't my favorite of her books, it's a winner in my opinion.

Basically, I had a horrible day and needed a pick-me-up. As usual, James wows with her amazing characterisation and sexy banter. She's the only romance author I've favourited, and she totally deserves it.

It’s spring which means it’s time for a new Julie James book. She only puts out one book a year, but she make the waiting worth it. Ford and Victoria are a lovely romance couple. Ford is an investigative journalist with the Chicago Tribune. Victoria is a divorce lawyer who owns her own very successful firm. Her townhouse was recently broke into, and while she hid in the closet and ended up being safe, she soon realized her fear of living alone was too great. She sells her townhouse and rents a loft in an apartment building. Her new neighbor is Ford.

At first, Ford and Victoria get off on the wrong foot. A lot can be heard through the wall their respective lofts share – like Victoria’s hair dryer at 6am every morning. Or the fact that Ford seems to bring home a different girl every other night. “Seems” being the important words because he isn’t necessarily a man-whore and has different reasons for different women coming to his place. But all these things start to annoy the other and they have a cute annoyance-flirting habit start-up.

Ford’s sister had a baby fourteen months ago and she isn’t sure who the father is. A drunken one night stand, she knows his name but that’s it. Needing child support help, Victoria offers to try to track down the father. Ford, very protective of his sister and with his investigative journalist instincts, offers to help investigate each Petar Sutton, until the one Nicole recognizes can be found. Victoria and Ford work together, kind of like amateur sleuths to track down the correct Peter. It’s during this time that they really get to know one another and fall in love. But Victoria suffers from a broken childhood and panic attacks and her fear of committment is a big thing.

I’m sure I say this in every Julie James review I write, but she writes such smart and sexy characters that I just eat up. They are so mature – and not stuffy boring mature, but relatable-mature. Good-natured, funny, hard-working, sexy. Yes. All of this. While this may not have been the fastest-paced book of hers, Ford and Victoria’s personalities kept me engaged. Victoria is a no-nonsense lawyer who likes to think her life is totally in control. So when she starts having panic attacks, it really pisses her off. She doesn’t like to appear weak and the thought of having an attack in public terrifies her. She starts therapy to help cope and this eventually leads to hitting on her past and her committment issues. I think in the book she describes herself as having the condition that she is “always okay” – I find this very relatable. The fact that she feels as if she always has to be okay – and once she realizes the burden that has on her life, it’s life-changing.

Ford is an easy-going, protective older brother, sex on a stick hero. He has two friends that made me laugh more than once. He is very attracted to Vitoria and loves to banter back and forth with her.

The search for baby daddy takes up a lot of page time – so this is a little slower paced than other books. It might not have been my favorite story line but I loved Ford and Victoria together. They kept me engaged the entire time

I'm upset.

Julie James is THE AUTHOR who got me hooked on romance novels. So to say that I was excited about reading this book, is probably the understatement of the year.

So imagine my surprise when I didn't actually enjoy this book.

The story in this seemed to take AGES to warm up. Perhaps this is because I didn't refresh myself on the FBI/US Attorney series prior to reading this? Whatever the case may be, it was very slow to begin with and even though it did gain a little steam as the story went on, I had a lot of trouble getting into it.

The biggest problem I had with this was that Victoria was such a raging bitch. There is a fine line between strong independent business woman and bitch I want to slap in the face and Victoria very much fell into the slap in the face category. She is overly judgmental, self absorbed and not very pleasant. While some of this can be related back to her battle with her panic disorder, her flaws were not endearing. I did not connect with her at all, she felt like a caricature and acted that way too. There was no depth to her.

Ford. While you have a heart of gold and seem like a decent guy, there isn't much memorable about you. I can't even remember the description of you, and I only finished this a few days ago...

These two, Victoria and Ford, they both had commitment and relationship issues. I was hoping that together they would help each other overcome their problems and grow and develop as a couple. My hopes were smashed against the wall at every turn. This book ventured into NA territory with the amount of unnecessary drama and miscommunication that was going on.

Honestly. I don't think I have read about two bigger bone heads in a romance novel. The jumping to conclusions. The running away. The closing off and being mean. JUST USE YOUR WORDS. They were incredibly frustrating to read about. I seriously considered throwing this against the wall numerous times. Urgh.

Also, I do not remember the previous Julie James books being so risqué in the love scenes. Look, these were hot, and SAFE, but... they lacked the tenderness and finesse of her earlier works.

There were some memorable parts, Victoria's speech at the end was lovely and some of Ford's words towards the end were swoon worthy, but these little glimpses of awesome were too little, too late.

I'm not angry with you, Julie James, but I am disappointed.

I guess this is a case of I like your old stuff better than your new stuff.

Julie James, you are an auto-read author of mine no longer.

I’m always excited when a new Julie James book rolls around because it means I’ll be reading about a smart heroine, some witty banter and a delicious hero. SUDDENLY ONE SUMMER has all of this all this there is something that feels a little different about this book as well.

Victoria Slade is a divorce lawyer and a damn successful one at that. As she tries to maintain this impeccable image of herself, she gives herself a really hard time when her house is broken into and she experiences a panic attack so severe that she passes out. Since then she has developed a panic disorder that prevents her from doing thing like taking the subway or being in small, enclosed spaces. As she works with a psychologist to help her overcome that she becomes James’ first heroine with a real vulnerability that she struggles with.

Now I will say that her doctor annoyed me. As someone who studied Psychology, it’s always nice to see the profession portrayed in books. However this doctor just didn’t work for me. All his scribbling down of his thoughts as Victoria spoke probably would have caused more anxiety in a person than really help so sorry, I could have done without all that.

When I mentioned this book feels different before I think it’s most evident in the beginning. First of all, the story takes a long time to set up. Victoria and the hero, Ford Dixon don’t even meet each other until maybe 50 pages in and the story of how they start working together doesn’t happen until 100 pages in so I could have done without the first few chapters and actually start the story where Nicole, Ford’s sister and baby Zoe show up at Ford’s apartment. Of course that would mean all the build up of how Victoria got her anxiety wouldn’t be as pronounced but as it wasn’t my favorite part of the book anyway, I would be totally okay with that.

When Victoria and Ford actually do meet each other that’s when the book really starts to feel like a Julie James book. There’s the snarkiness, the witty banter, the annoying/lustful looks that the characters shoot each other when they think the other isn’t looking. THIS is what I read Julie James for so I was a bit disappointed it took so long to get there.

One thing I did like was the presence of Nicole and Zoe in the book. I think it added more to Ford’s character to see his protectiveness and of course it’s quite charming to see Ford taking care of his little niece.

So while this isn’t my favorite of Julie James’ books, there are still many things I enjoyed about it. I’ve always love James and will always be a fan.

Suddenly One Summer by Julie James is a 2015 Jove publication.

This is an enjoyable contemporary romance, which centers around high powered divorce attorney, Victoria Slade and her sexy, but irritating neighbor, Ford Dixon.

Victoria survives a home invasion robbery, but is now dealing with a panic disorder as a result. Feeling uncomfortable in her townhouse after the break-in, she moves into a loft only to discover her new neighbor has a 'cavalcade' of women coming in and out of his apartment and he's also doing renovations which are disrupting her already fragile sleep patterns. But when Ford's sister, Nicole, needs the advice of an attorney, Ford and Victoria step up to help her out, but spending all that time together is making it awfully difficult to deny the sexual chemistry between them, but what could it hurt? After all, both of them are casual daters, they 'don't get serious, and especially don't do it together.'

While the banter between Victoria and Ford is witty and at times pretty funny, there is a more serious undertone at work in the story, which helps to give it more substance than you might think.
Victoria's upbringing was sort of grim from an emotional standpoint, which could be why she has trouble with committing to a long term relationship. Ford is also carrying around the burden of regret after losing a family member, and the effects of growing up with an alcoholic father.

The quest Victoria and Ford embark on, for Nicole, had them behaving kind of silly at times, and I couldn't help but wonder why they were going about it the old fashioned way instead of using the ease and power that comes from a few clicks on the internet , but it was still fun, and I liked the way everything came together in that storyline. Victoria's panic disorder was handled well, and I thought bringing this issue to the forefront, via a strong, independent woman, was a nice touch, and goes to show there is a lot to be said for getting help when you need it.

Both Victoria and Ford enjoyed character growth, but of the two, Victoria seemed to shine the most, facing her worst fears, admitting her mistakes and learning from them.

Overall, this is a solid contemporary romance with just a little tiny bit of angst, a nice mix of humor, sexy times, and romance proving that fate and love might be working together in the big scheme of things.

Maybe not as badass or exciting as some of the books in the FBI/US Attorney series, but I still really loved it! ❤️

Julie James never disappoints me. Her books are my guilty pleasure, my get out of a shitty mood books, my simply relax, sit back and feel good books, my safe haven, my auto-buy books, my break from any other heavy books or from reality, you name it. People buy ice cream or shoes, I do that AND listen to Julie James' books.

And I feel like her writing needs no explanation or presentation by now. Everyone knows her light dry tone, her sassy, intelligent, independent, sarcastic women, her equally sarcastic, intelligent alpha heroes, their banter, their smexy times, their chemistry, their heat, their sexual tension etc. In other words, everything I usually love in my books and characters in one delightful package! Add in the smart, business, lawer-y vibe and you know you're in for an exciting, perfect ride!

Oooh..Suddenly One Summer by Julie James was my first read from this author and I have to say that I quite enjoyed this sexy, fun, and sweet romance!! Ms. James has created and weaved an engaging romance book that will instantly hook readers right off the opening pages. This book was well written that highlights a divorce lawyer and an investigator reporter, who suddenly find themselves in a summer love affair. I really enjoyed this sweet, sexy, and charming read of two people who weren't looking for love creating their own HEA ending.
