Jitni Mitti Utna Sona [As Much Soil, So Much Gold]

Rate this book
This book delves into the lives of the Rung people, who have inhabited the remote Himalayan valleys of Vyas, Darma, and Chaudas in Kumaon, Uttarakhand, on the India-Tibet border for centuries. The Rung people, with their unique cultural and social traditions, have a rich history of trade with Tibet, embodying a civilization distinct in its heritage.

The narrative is the culmination of extensive research journeys through these valleys, offering a rare glimpse into a mysterious world that has seen little authentic documentation. The book not only showcases the cultural richness of the Rung society, which thrives in the harsh conditions of the Himalayas, but also highlights their indomitable spirit and extraordinary courage, essential for survival in such challenging terrains.

Rich in anthropological insights, this travelogue weaves a tapestry of stories, myths, poetry, folklore, and memories, creating an enchanting experience that combines the warmth of elder tales with the thrill of exploring unfamiliar geographies.

Reading this book was like embarking on a journey to a distant land, one that I may never physically traverse but have experienced deeply through its pages. The story swept me away into a world where simplicity reigns and innocence is at the heart of its people. It gave me a glimpse into a tribe whose values and way of life are pure and unpretentious, painting a picture of humanity at its most authentic.

It opened a window for me to explore my own roots, to look at my people and their way of life with renewed curiosity and appreciation. The kindness and sincerity of the characters in the book reminded me that there is beauty in simplicity, and that so many truths about life are to be found in the traditions and cultures we might take for granted.
