This is book two of the Vampire Huntress Chronicles and sees Detective and last of a line of Hunters Rainey Astor, and Vampire Elijah Hawthorne as they return from her grandmother’s wreck of a home in Salem. They have brought a very old wooden box back with them, but Rainey opened it briefly while they were there and is now hearing voices telling her things and trying to get her to join them. She puts it all down to tiredness after such an eventful few days, but a darkness was unleashed and has filled a void with her, between Hunter and Witch. Something is coming and there is a huge price on both their heads, seemingly from the Immortal Council, who are in ultimate charge above the three other factions, vampire, witch and shifter councils. Her usual conduct of running straight into dangerous situations without any planning or thought, may have finally caught her out! The two of them are increasing their bonds between themselves and a proper relationship, but if others find out about this, they will be targeted.
When she returns to work, hoping things may get back to normal, her first case with her partner Ramirez is that of a witch who has been drained of her magic. This is only the first of many witches being killed in a ritualistic manner and those with active magic, are being drained and anyone else in the vicinity are also being killed. It is all linked to something deadly that her sister, Delaney, discovered before her death, but had kept from Rainey and her other friends. A darkness is coming and Rainey is at the centre of it all. Some of them will not survive what is coming. Elijah calls in help from old and trusted contacts, after finding nothing in his own library to help them with the event said to be coming on All Hallow’s Eve. They find the first ever witch has been locked away for centuries, but opening the box has released souls tainted with dark magic into the world. There are some huge secrets revealed in this book about people around Rainey and massive shocks and repercussions from these. A powerful witch is draining others, building up her power, to bring darkness into the world, which will send all of the world, human and supernatural into a world of hurt.
Multiple voices are beckoning Rainey into the darkness that only she seems to be able to see or hear. Even Elijah cannot stop her being pulled into it. If she submits to these voices, one even masquerading as her dead sister, or allows herself to be pulled into the darkness, she may well be lost forever. Her date of birth as well as her being the last true and full blood Hunter from the very first Hunter, brings about a conflux of possible powers for her, most of which she has yet to realise or tap into. Everyone that she knows and loves are in danger from the dark soul targeting witches and ultimate world domination! Elijah has kept a couple of huge from Rainey, something they said they would never do to each other, and they may come back to bite him, once she discovers them. Another cliffhanger of an ending, as matters get to a tragic conclusion. The hunters have become the hunted and they are being hit from all sides. Nice to see Rainey and Elijah getting closer and there are some very explicit scenes in there, so be warned. Tales from the first of their kind, through to the discord between each faction of supernaturals, but also talk of some even higher up’s than the Immortal Council, who are targeting the pair. Lots more to be explained and a very dark situation to be worked through, to see who will survive, in the next book of the series! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
