Set Apart: A Story of Hope, Redemption, and a Second Chance

Rate this book
Have you ever wondered, “Lord, why am I here?” Matthew Haley was a black kid from the South Side of Chicago. He lost his mother to a drug overdose when he was ten. The state separated him from his siblings, and they put him in foster care.

But God had already set him apart, angels watched over him, and he found a way out. After six years in the army and some PTSD, he returned to Chicago, but why? There was no reason to go back there. There was nothing for him.

But God had a plan. Matthew would meet a retired judge named Gabe Williams, find a lottery ticket, and meet a lovely young lady named Bianca. Then one day, he met a little blonde Cocker Spaniel named Beasley. With all these and Gabriel, Matthew slowly began to understand why he was “Set Apart.”

Matthew Haley would find hope, redemption, and a second chance.

This author surprised me with the subject in this book. It is a bit different in subject matter then his other books, but it was oh so good! Honestly, each of his books gets better and better. Once again, the author shows God as the God of Second Chances. I don't want to go into too much detail as to give anything away. This book is not only a great story, but it gets down into your heart. It's so full of simple truths of trusting God and leaning on Him. He can be so trusted. It also represents God as a delivering God and a God of miracles. Beasley is in this story and as remarkable as ever! You can't help but love this little guy and wish you had a Beasley of your own. This author lets the Holy Spirit guide him in what to write and what direction to go it and you can tell it is an inspire story. It is fiction but the story line is unfortunately a reality in our world today. It hits home. You'll see how God will take someone that is so lost in this world and change their lives completely. God knows us from our mother's womb and He choses us for specific purposes from that time on. Every unborn child was selected by the Lord to do a work for Him. But not all adhere to that calling or do not until they have gone through so much hurt in this world. But God is a God of second chances. He never gives up on His Love. Please get this book, which is the first in a two book series. You will not regret it. I found myself highlighting parts of the book that really got to me and made me think. The best stories are the ones you can finish, knowing you have not only read a great story, but it has changed you in some way. No matter what situation we find ourselves in, whether self inflicted or something we couldn't help, stay in fervent prayer for however long it takes. The Deliverer will rescue you because He loves you! Be sure and get the sequal!

Another Amazing book from R.Marshall Wright and A WONDERFUL BLESSING for his readers!

With each book that this author writes, I find that I feel his words cause me to feel every emotion, from smiles to tears and I am brought to my knees more than once as I read them! It is such a Blessing as each page is read, showing what an Awesome God we serve. I so loved getting to see how Matthew Haley found out about becoming a Christian as he was able to save others as he learned more about himself. He was learning how to trust and every step he made was a wonderful reminder of how God works in our lives, if we let Him. I was really blessed by this book and I highly recommend it!! It was an exciting journey for Matthew Haley and for me as a reader. It's a BEAUTIFUL love story with great characters and a special little dog, who "knows things" and it kept me reading until very late, because I just couldn't wait to find out what happened next! Thank You R.Marshall Wright for another wonderful story that I felt blessed by as I read each chapter!!!

If you have read books by R. Marshall Wright, you are going to love this newest book! If you haven’t been introduced to him, this is a great starting point!
‘Set Apart’ introduces us to Matthew Haley who has a bit of “baggage”. His younger years lead him to join the military and the military shaped him into the man we first meet. Thanks to a “chance” meeting, Matthew’s life starts to change for the better. Once he becomes a Christian, God’s greater plan starts to unfold. This is a reoccurring concept with all of R. Marshall Wright’s books…..God’s greater plan. Let’s be honest, we all need reminded that God is the one ultimately in control.

In ‘Set Apart’ we meet new characters and we catch up with some familiar friends from Glencoe. The ending has so many twists be sure to pay attention how everything gets tied together!! You will be surprised I’m sure!

Now for the best part…..Beasley is back!!!!! :)

The first part of the book introduced the main character in an interesting way. I enjoyed getting to know Matthew as a person. We were also introduced to several different characters and the stories went back and forth between these people. This made it difficult to keep a timeline straight and follow the story thread. Then about half way through the book, these characters were never mentioned again. Will these people be in the next book and a background was being laid? For me personally, these characters were unnecessary and detracted from this book.

I struggled with the first half of the book trying to keep up with all the characters. However, I sailed through the second half when the main story was more focused.

The book deals with a very serious topic that is relevant for today. Hopefully there are and will continue to be more people like Matthew who will step up and help.

I have read almost all of R Marshall Wright’s books but he just keeps getting better with each one he writes. Matthew Haley is searching and wonders why he is even here. But God has plans for him. This book will show you that God can use you wherever you are if you will but listen to Him and follow His leading. This is a great book and I am looking forward to the next one in this new series. Thank you to BookFunnel for the copy of this book which was given without any requirement for a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

The author has a wonderful story-telling style and I believe men would also enjoy this book as well as women who like a little action in the stories. He introduces us to his new characters and then gets right into it. There are even some characters from past books that add to this story tremendously. We always love Beasley…pay attention when he barks. Other special characters add to this story of God’s love, redemption, second chances. You don’t have to read prior books to enjoy this one, but it helps for back stories. Enjoyed this one, and looking forward to the next one!

R. Marshall Wright does not tell stories about shiny, perfect people, but he does tell stories about realistic people, and that is part of the reason I enjoy his books so much.
Matthew Haley is not a perfect person with a perfect life, but God has a plan for each of us and gives us free will to accept Him and follow that plan, and that is what Matthew does. I loved watching how this plan worked out in Matthew’s situation. It was exciting to see everything come together! And the ending…I did not see that coming!

The author tells stories better than anyone I have read. I have read all his books and lots of other inspirational books, but his are the best stories! This story deals with the issue “Does my life have a purpose?” God says yes! As a young black man Matthew suffered much, but God used it for His glory and purposes. I bought this book early one morning and started reading. Well, I didn’t get much done other than reading and finished in 1 day. That happens when the story pulls you in and won’t let go until you reach the surprising but wonderful climax.

Another 5 star from R Marshall Wright. Once I started reading I could not put it down. I am always eager to see how Beasley will make his appearance and this time it did not disappoint. Go on the journey with Matthew and see how God had set him apart and will use him for His glory. An unexpected ending (or temporary pause until the next book) that brought a tear to my eye. I am eager to jump on into that story to see what is next for Matthew and Beasley.

This is the first I’ve read/listened to by this author and was very pleasantly surprised.
This story deals with a growing issue in our world and the author did an amazing job of writing it with delicate candor.
A strong salvation theme with faith and hope woven throughout was one of the things I loved about it.
As a frequent audiobook listener, I was surprised at how well the AI generated voice sounded pretty realistic.
I highly recommend this book to my fellow readers.

Great story

Loved how the plan of Salvation was told in a simple to understand way. Loved the way the story showed the workings of God in the life of each of the characters and how He brought His plan in the lives of the characters. However, what's this "to be continued ? You better write real fast😉

The book that keeps you reading.

I was right there with Matthew, cheering or heart pounding, wondering what was going to happen next. This is better than the series set in Glencoe and I love those books. I need book 2! I'm ready for the sequel!

With each story I'm blessed to read by Mr. Wright, the reviews get harder to write. I've been at a loss of words to do them true justice. His writing is an inspiration, a gift from God that Mr. Wright uses to touch hurting hearts and broken spirits by putting these same aspects into his characters.
"Set Apart" is yet another amazing story of hope, redemption, and second chances. Staying true to form, this story weaves the unconditional love, mercy, and compassion of God, showing that no matter the circumstance, He has plans, hope, and a future for everyone that will believe in Him. Matthew Haley, like many, had a childhood he wasn't very proud of. But it was in an army orientation where God's seed was planted in Matthew's heart. Through his childhood, army, and some PTSD, God never left him, and guided Matthew to where he needed to be to save others, along with the help of an adorable little cocker spaniel.
I highly recommend this book, for men and women, as I do every single one of R. Marshall Wright's. I laughed out loud, cried for characters, and cheered them on to the end. Once again, my heart was truly touched , and my spirit lifted through this amazing story. You will NOT be disappointed!
