I was encouraged while reading this, as the author clearly had respect for single parents and in no way indicated a diminished quality of life based on this as many single parenting books do. Every chapter reinforced my joy in parenting rather than making me feel burdened and overwhelmed.

Kevin Leman writes easy and a lot. He has a lot of good ideas and so-good. I do not agree with many. The same goes for this book. He said he wrote this one after listening to endless number of single moms. Yea... some of us stronger than other. I like some ideas and encouragement. I wish he understands better what single parenthood does to us on the emotional level. How physical fatigue of working for two 24/7/365 affects our ability to cope with all we need to cope with. How it affects our choices. Yet - if you are a single parent - have it this book on your shelf. "Try" is not in a vocabulary of single parent - our life word is "must". Leman offers enough encouragement to keep "must" strong and do not slip into "try".

I love Dr Leman. This is actually the first book that I have read by him, but I heard him speak 2 years ago. He is just as engaging in his books as he is in person. What right does a man who isn't a single parent have writing a book about single parenting was my initial thought, until I noticed that he was the author. It is a terrific read! He addresses and speaks to single parents from every different walk (those divorced, those widowed, those who adopted, and those who never married). He doesn't give you a list of guilty should-do's but affirms your pain, encourages your strengths and speaks for the benefit of your kids. I read it in less than 2 weeks... which speaks a lot!

This book would have been more helpful to me if my daughter was older & talking, but still I learnt a few things that I know I can do & keep doing going forwards. The most valuable lesson I gained from this book is to pick one chair not two - Basically to stop trying to do it all & run my house like a dual parent family because thats simply too much work & tidy house isn't what your kids will remember, its the time with you that they want more than gifts & to be heard & valued for who they are instead of what you want them to be. If your recently separated or have lost a spouse this book is worth reading even of its just to reassure you that your doing a good enough job already.

This book covers being a single mom or dad, whether you are widowed, divorced, or never married. It discusses how to answer your child's questions about their other parent and gives suggestions on how to handle other situations.
