Rate this book
After being cast back in time to 16th-century Scotland, Nancy is embroiled in a world of supernatural beings and a mystery that brings her closer to the handsome Malcolm...

Accomplished scuba instructor Nancy Kane has an obsession with the supernatural and cryptozoology, so when she’s exploring an underground cave system and is somehow transported back in time to Loch Ness where she comes face-to-face with the illusive monster, she’s not terrified. She’s fascinated.

While coming to terms with being stuck in another time weighs on Nancy, she finds the prospect easier to stomach with the help of Malcolm Grant, the tanist of Urquhart Castle.

Malcolm has sworn off women after one too many rejections, but the beautiful blonde from the future has him rethinking his stance on love. The kindhearted Nancy takes the truth of her new life in stride and isn’t fazed at all by the supernatural beings and curses in her new home.

The two instantly hit it off and spend more time together, as he introduces her to all the wonders of the keep and surrounding countryside.

But when mysterious troubles start in town and the finger is pointed toward the entities of the Loch, Nancy must team up with Malcolm to clear the name of their friends and to identify the real culprits, all while protecting her heart.

Stranded by the Highlander is the second book in the Highlander Forever series, perfect for fans of brooding heroes, intrepid heroines, and pause-resisting time travel romance.

Too Long, Time Issues

My favorite book review site doesn't show how long a book is. So I was surprised when I checked out this book at Amazon and saw that it was nearly 700 pages. Mercy, that’s a long book! In some author's hands, this length wouldn't be a problem. But I am familiar with this author's other works, so the length made me question whether or not the author could pull it off. Unfortunately, in my view, she was not able to do so.

So, what are my problems with the book? There were several issues. I found the book to be severely overwritten, with an excess of detail that was ponderous to wade through. This happened throughout the book, not just the unfortunate data dumps at the beginning. I found myself just skimming through the book, trying to get to the good parts. That's never good. I also found myself somewhat surprised that this takes place in a version of Scotland where magic is real, not the true historical one. I have read other books by this author, and most of them were more realistic, or at least fully grounded in the real world. In general, I don't have a problem with that. I read and enjoy fantasy on occasion. But perhaps if this is a relatively new venture for you, as an author, you should try it on a shorter book first to get your skills up.

The book also has some issues with time, in several ways. For one thing, the timeline of the book itself seems muddled. At certain points, it seemed like weeks or months had gone by, but later we were told a different amount of time went by. That was definitely confusing and sometimes unsettling. Also, the book description says that the heroine time travels back to 16th century Scotland, but in the book, a character says it's the 17th century Scotland. Whichever century the book is supposed to take place in, some things happen that just wouldn't be historically accurate, like eating a sandwich wrapped in butcher paper. I know, I shouldn’t fuss over inaccurate parts of a fantasy book. It is, however, supposedly grounded in a particular place and time, and really, some details aren’t that hard to get right!

This is billed as a time-travel romance, but romance definitely takes a backseat to the magical conflicts the book is centered around. Again, this seems more common for a fantasy book, which is fine, but I appreciate having a book accurately described in the book blurb (tell me more about the magical fantasy conflicts) and given the proper categories.

In other books I have reviewed by this author, I have commented on the absolutely terrible grammar, punctuation, and usage. Clearly, previous books had not been professionally edited. This book is marginally better than other books by this author, and she very prominently states on the title page that this book has been edited by a particular person, one whom I know to also be an author. There are still grammar and punctuation issues, but not nearly so much. I do find myself wondering if that author/editor is actually a real professional editor, or just another author trying to help a friend. But at least things have improved.

So, this is better than some of Ms. Preston’s other works, but I still don't feel like I can wholly recommend it because of the issues that I've stated above. It is a super long slog that definitely could have been tightened up considerably with full sections slashed.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

A Perfectly MAGICAL Romance!
Like a fine wine with a melt-in-your-mouth steak dinner, STRANDED BY THE HIGHLANDER by author Rebecca Preston, needs to be savored. Well, perhaps that was my second time through this delicious time-travel romance. STRANDED BY THE HIGHLANDER is not just lovely because the wonderful slow-burn romance is a sure bet to entertain readers for hours, it is outstanding because it tells the most memorable story. STRANDED BY THE HIGHLANDER tells the delightful tale of a modern girl, Nancy, who finds herself in the Scottish Highlands during circa 16th Century. And just when she was getting a handle on her new when and where, along comes Malcolm, the man who likes the look of this woman from the future, and the one who makes this new when and where a bit more tolerable. Eloquently written, with the right amount of detail for readers to “see” the settings, follow the non-stop action, and enjoy the perfect sprinkling of angst to understand why everyone acts in the manner they do, STRANDED BY THE HIGHLANDER is the perfect SEASONAL romance no matter the season! I fell in love with Nancy, Malcolm and the host of supporting characters, some of whom I recognized from author Preston’s first book in this Highlander Forever series. STRANDED BY THE HIGHLANDER is a complete, standalone novel. Yet, despite being the second book in the series, there were very few spoilers for those who chose to read this second book first! I loved the first book so much I gladly volunteered to read a copy of TITLE and this is my enthusiastic and voluntary 5+STAR review. If you like your romances to have a GREAT story, a bit of magic, and some steam, then TITLE should be your next romance purchase! Happy pages! 😉

This book took me by surprise. I had not expected it to be so exhilarating, so thrilling, so exciting. I had expected a good book but my goodness this book went far beyond my wild imaginings. This is the first of the author Rebecca Preston's work that I have read and I loved it. It is a feast for the senses. The imagery describing the loch, describing what Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster looked like, the beauty of Scotland, the ancient medieval castle, the bravery of the warriors and the occupants that supported them during their time of danger and it described the different evil fae creatures that tormented the area. It was interesting that Nancy was saved from suffocation by sentient beings, the good fae. Being a scuba diver instructor was not in high demand in the 1600's. Nor did she have anyway to replenish her compressed air tanks. She did not know why she was there and why she had been saved. But the Laird's wife Anna also had time traveled to where she was and told her that her coming preceded a time of great trouble and that she was there for a reason. It wasn't until the war between the Highlanders and the evil fae got going and was coming to a head that Nancy knew why she was there. Malcolm was the Laird's brother and second in command. When Nancy and Malcolm's eyes met for the first time, they both felt the strong chemistry between them. As they spent more time together, they grew closer. The book I feel focuses on the paranormal attacks and war. The action and adventure felt so real, it seems you are right there with them. Fighting side by side with them. When the time came for Nancy to fulfill her purpose, it brought her to a crossroad of whether to stay or go back to her own time. This is such an amazing book; a must read. I highly recommend it.

This is an intriging and entertaining story. I love the Fae lore in this, and Nessi. Nancy is a young woman who lives to dive, as a hobby, and as a job. When she and a couple of friends go looking for hidden caves in an old, flooded quarry, she is caught in a rock slide, trapping her. She finds herself in a weird, dreamlike state, until she reaches a beach. It's not the place she started at, but she sees a home goes there. Maggie, the witch in the area, helps her, and informs her that she's now in the past. Nancy is fascinated, but never questions the truth of it. Malcolm, the Laird's tanist and best friend, sort of gets put in charge of her. They skirt around all the sexual tension and attraction while they work together to find out who is breaking into homes and stealing food. The storyline is more about Fae and monsters and people's beliefs more than romance, but Nancy and Malcolm are sweet and romantic together. This is a great series and I can't waitto read the next book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

Travelling back to medieval Scotland and meeting the Loch Ness monster? On a dive into a cave system with her friend and mentor who taught her to dive, Nancy gets separated from him and when she thinks she will die in there strange beings lead her out of the water and she emerges into medieval Scotland. And another woman from twentieth century America is there also named Anna who is now married to the Laird. He and his people keep the villagers safe from the unseelie fae. But now the village and the castle are threatened and Nessie says there is a problem in the loch. Will Nancy be able to use her scuba diving gear to save the loch and thereby save the castle and villagers from the evil Fae? And if she is successful she has to make a decision, stay in medieval Scotland with the people she has grown to love, or return to the twentieth century to save her father the heartache of believing she has drowned in a cave? I enjoyed the mystery surrounding the need for Nancy to be cast back through time to Urquhart Castle in Scotland. Her skills, intelligence and interests were vital in resolving the goings on in and around Loch Ness. While I enjoyed the sweet nature of Nancy and Malcolm’s slow-burning relationship, it was also kind of ho-hum for me, and I would have liked more chemistry between them. It was fantastic though to catch up with Anna and Donal from the previous book, and to discover how Maggie yet again had her finger on the pulse of what was going on regarding the Loch.

This is a well written, entertaining story with charming characters, and plenty of action & adventure, along with some faerie magic, humour, suspense and drama. At times though, I found the story too wordy with lengthy descriptions and musings.

Now that is what I call a sit on the edge of your seat while reading kind of story! If you like time travel stories filled with sexy Highlanders, kick a$$ heroines, magical Fae (good and evil), Nessie the Loch Ness Monster, suspense, adventure, with some lovin' thrown in, then you'll love this book.

When Nancy goes on a deep dive to explore a cave system, little does she know she's going to end up in medieval Scotland! I loved her character, how she took most everything in stride and went into action when she realized what she was sent there to do! Malcolm is also a wonderful character who stands by her and helps to protect her. When these two finally get together, you can't help but smile:)

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and now look forward to the next book in this series. I received an ARC of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This is the second book in this series. Although having characters etc from the first book, this can be read as a stand alone story.
As with the first book I really quite enjoyed this story.

Nancy is an accomplished scuba diver who while exploring an underwater cave system is transported back on time to Loch Ness in Scotland. Here she meets Malcom Grant.
When a series of robberies start happening they together start to investigate to find out the real culprits as others have been accused.

I liked the descriptions of the loch, castle people etc, The plot was good and included some mystery, intrigue, action and romance.

Time Travel? What's not to like? Add in the Scottish Highlands, warriors, the Loch Ness Monster (aka Nessie) and the paranormal and you have a winner! ?Mix in romance, humour, drama and you have me completely sold! I loved it so very much I wish I had more stars to give!!
The only complaint I have is in the title - I think this book is not correctly named - nowhere is Nancy, or anyone for that matter, Stranded by a Highlander - in time, yes!
Still, a tale well told with good characters and a well rounded whole that not even missing the previous book detracted from at all! *I will go back to Anna's story*

I received an ARC copy of this and am leaving this review freely and with absolutley no reservations whatsoever

Love a man in a kilt!

Stranded By The Highlander: Highlander Forever Book 2
By Rebecca Preston
Kindle unlimited purchase
Nancy loves anything to do with scuba diving. So when James said he found a cave in the flooded Quarry that needed exploring she couldn't pass it up.
Malcolm was introduced in book one. He is the castles Tanist, which means he is the second in command.
This book takes place a couple of years after the first book, so I recommend reading the books in order as it looks like the characters from other books will be involved in other books.

I enjoyed reading this story! Starts with Nancy in present time and you learn that she is a scuba diving instructor and she goes diving in a cave but then a cave in blocks her path she goes forward and something happens and she ends up going to the surface and she does not know where she is. I was drawn in to keep reading to find out what happen that put her back in time how she deals with it and who she meets. Love how she meets Malcolm and how their relationship grows into love. Near the end something happens that puts Nancy skill as a scuba diver to use and it kept me reading to find out how their deal with it and love the ending. Look forward to reading the next book in this series Swept By The Highlander.

If you like overly and unnecessarily long books, this is the book for you. I'm not sure why the author felt the need for 60 chapters to tell a story that would take half that. I skimmed chapters and still got the whole story. Perhaps she gets paid by the word or chapter. Anyway, if you make it through the ponderous book, there is an interesting story. Malcolm and Nancy are somewhat interesting characters, we know all about her and little about him. We have Fae, both good and bad, the Loch Ness monster, time travel and a bit of a love story at 75% into the book. If you can get by the unnecessary stuff, not a bad story.

Interesting plot

The plots of these books are good, quite different to other time travel romances I’ve read.

The 2 downsides are the language of medieval Scotland (I’m sure colleague didn’t exist back then). There’s very little attempt to mirror the language of the time. Instead there was a line saying why can I understand you, oh the sidhe...

The 2nd point is the ease with which the characters discount their sorrow at leaving their family with the argument “they won’t be born for 100’s of years”. Yep causes that exactly how you’d feel.

It’s easy to skim over these points if your not a purist.

Wow what an interesting and exciting book! This is clearly a well researched, well thoughtout and masterfully told story. Nancy and Malcolm are adorable, as are Donal and Anna. Brendan is a hunk, Kaitlyn is a riot and Maggie is.....well....Maggie. The action is non-stop, filled with deception and treachery. The resolution is a creative and harrowing experience that will have you holding your breath and get your heart thumping. It is definitely worth your time! Read it!

Wow this book was pretty long and this author described everything even though I love it when the author puts plenty of descriptions in a story but this one went on and on I did love this story and who doesn’t love the Scottish brogue plus the story kept me entertained. We have Nancy who is scuba diving in a cave she gets separated from her mentor and gets pulled back in time to the 16th century where she meets Nessie and Malcolm. I enjoyed this story it’s a great read and I recommend this book.

Stranded By The Highlander

When Nancy went diving she was stranded under water by a cave in. Some force she ended in the 16th century. There was a castle. Fairies and goblins now in her life. Good fairies and bad goblins. Only iron will kill the goblins. Nancy missed the 21st century. Rebecca Preston does a wonderful job writing this book. Does she get back home ? Can she live with fairies? Read this book and find out.

I loved this book from start to finish. It's engaging, full of action and great characters. Nancy and Malcolm had me rooting for them from the very beggining, and honestly every girl needs their own Darter.. As for Maggie, she's fantastic! I love the whole atmosphere in this book, and the nice balance between modern and medieval.

Paranormals, time travel, romance and hunky Scottish highland men, what else do you want in a book. Great descriptions, although it was a long book it kept me interested all the way. Apparently this is the second book in the series, but I lost nothing by not reading the first.

#2 is as good as the first in the series

It is rare when the “sequel” is right up there with the first. Rebecca Preston has succeeded. I excitedly look forward to book 3.

Strong intelligent women from the future, strong handsome Highlanders from the distant pass, Fae, Loch Ness monster, goblins with an evil plan.
