Chasing the Sun

Rate this book
When Ian Radcliffe gets the opportunity to leave town to consult on the project of his career he’s doesn’t think twice. He loads his dog and guitar into the back of the Jeep and flips Dallas the bird as it becomes a speck in his rearview.
A change of scenery, that’s just what he needs. His heart isn’t broken anymore, just sore. He thought he’d found the one in Katrine MacNamara, but unfortunately she thought he was number two.
He wasn’t a rich businessman, or a rockstar...he was just an architect. He believed in love, family, and friendship. Some might call him the ‘nice guy’. He always thought so— do the right thing, protect the bullied, return your mom’s calls.
When two dynamic women enter his life in this new city the lines of friendship, sex, and love are blurred, his world of black and white becomes a little more gray.
Will the heartbroken become the heartbreaker?
Readers fell in love with Ian in Rebound and Resilient. This is his story and his chance at a love of his own. It won’t come easy, like he always thought it would. But nothing good comes easy...at least nothing worthwhile.
Hold onto your hammocks girls, your favorite nice guy is taking center stage. It’s Ian’s turn to get the girl...or two.
Chasing the Sun is a 40,000 word novella, and although this is a spinoff of the Rebound series, it can be read as a stand alone.

In true Nikki Mathis Thompson style this little book comes packed with pure awesomeness. She never disappoints, her characters are always so lively and completely relatable, bringing your emotions to the surface as you read yet another incredible story, I'm truly sad it was over so soon, I could read her books forever...

We met Ian in the book Resilient when he starts dating Katrine, but she later dumps him to be with the one she really loves. Heartbroken Ian accepts a job offer in Austin, he packs his beloved dog Ruby and all his sorrow in search of healing. On the first night in the new city he finds a restaurant/ bar where he meets a sassy bartender named Trey. Immediately they strike a friendship and Ian starts feeling right at home with his new friend. They get along great and being that both Ian and Trey are very attractive the sexual tension is always present, but Ian is scared and not feeling ready to give love another try just yet, so he keeps Trey as a friend, but it won't be easy to resist her and things start to get complicated between them. On the midst of everything Ian starts hanging out and playing guitar with a sultry singer named Rory, shes sexy and free spirited, exactly what he needs. Ian is an amazing guitar player and Rory is captivated by him, but Ian can't stop feeling guilty about Trey. His heart is confused yet feeling alive by these two beautiful women. When his time in Austin is coming to an end after his project is finished, will he be able to just pick up leave these two women who have helped him so much or will he make a move into the right direction towards the real love connection he's always wanted?

Since I've been following this series, I was always more of a Xander fan ( Katrine's sexy millionaire boyfriend) and when she was dating Ian I like him a lot but I wasn't a huge fan of his. Ive totally fallen for him in this book, we get to learn more about him and understand from his POV how things felt for him. We get to know his heart and he's truly a remarkable and really handsome character, I was happy to see him get his shot at happiness. In this book we learn right along with Ian that those difficult times in life are the real important lessons that makes us grow into better individuals and that most times best friends make the best lovers...

Is not a NMT book unless it comes with an amazing playlist, she's just awesome like that. My favorite songs from the Chasing The Sun playlist were:
*Mississippi by Train
*Dust To Dust by The Civil Wars
*Take Me To Church by Hozier
*Comeback Story by Kings of Leon

I'd always wondered what happened in Ian's life after Kate chose to go back to Xander. I really enjoyed the "Comeback Story" and I am happy Ian ended up with who and where he did. While I think the perspective he gained through his time spent in Austin was great for understanding what Kate went through and that her choice to leave him wasn't easy, I don't love it when my MC's spend the majority of the story sleeping with someone else, it somehow is very hard for my romantic heart to accept.

I was given an ARC by the author and this is my true and honest review.

This is Ian's story. It is a novella, but a complete, and wonderful, story. If you haven't read Rebound and Resilient, then do so before you read Chasing the Sun. And if you haven't read them, what are you waiting for? Brilliant stories!

The story begins after Ian has had his heart ripped out by Katrine. He's devastated and getting the heck out of the Big D, temporarily. He hits Austin and he meets Trevia, aka Trey. Trey is a law student, but she's lived a full and complete life, going back to school after 4 years of travel. I adore Trey! She is sassy and smart and doesn't take any crap, from anyone. She and Ian form a wonderful friendship.

Then we meet Rory, who is an earthy, hippie singer. Rory immediately captivates Ian and they begin their affair.

Ian's story is wonderful. I rooted against Ian in the previous books, as I adored Xander and Katrine. i was so glad that Ian was getting his own story and his HEA.

The author writes so well. There are true laugh out loud moments, as well as an ugly cry moment. She has done this to me twice now! There is love, laughter, friendship and healing. The healing is my favorite part. Loved this book and can't wait for the next one!!

I was super excited (and may have begged) to be an ARC for this little novella!! And now in less than 24hrs I've finished and am pleased to say that Nikki Mathis Thompson has done it again!! If you haven't read her other books, Rebound & Resilient you totally should!! I love these little novellas, taking a character from one of the ordinal books and letting us in deeper to get to know them! Her characters feel like people you know, they have so much depth and everything is once again laid out perfectly to give us a look at Ian! Nikki my friend I love these characters of yours and can't wait to see what happens next!!

She's done it again!! Love Chasing the Sun!!

What a great weekend read. Nikki Mathis Thompson has once again proven she is a great writer. The way she can get you intertwined in the characters is amazing. I read Rebound and was one of the many folks out there routing for Ian!! It's great that we are getting to see what happens in the supporting characters lives after the main book.

Chasing the Sun made me laugh, made me cry and made me hungry for the next book!!

Keep them coming!!

Ian Radcliffe is a good guy by his own admission. The love of his life Katrine MacNamara chose to spend forever with "cheating ass" Xander Abbott leaving Ian broken hearted.
When business takes him from Dallas to Austin, Ian enjoys the quaint local scenery & comes upon the pub "Royal Muck" where he meets Trevia "Trey" Swartz a savvy bartender & Aurora "Rory" Monroe a fiery singer.
Ian connects with both women and finds himself understanding with clarity what Katrine went through-loving, in different ways, two people.
Ian's connection with Maddie, Katrine's sister ties the characters together & adds layers of the past-plus some of the best laugh out loud moments (and I did LOL).
I love this novella -I loved Ian in Rebound & Resilient & am thrilled he has his own story. Plus I will always look at a hammock & smile!

4.5 Stars for this fun little romp. Keep those fingers typing Nikki Mathis Thompson, because I can't get enough of this crew (and your amazing writing, of course).
I'm not going to summarize Chasing The Sun since it has been done by others, but trust me, you need to read this book. Preferably after reading Rebound and Resilient. In NMT's other books, I was not a fan of Ian. I felt he was a big puss. I'm still Team Xander, but after reading Chasing the Sun, I can say I'm quite found of Ian. I love all of the character's the author creates, you feel like you really know them, have some deep connection. Trey is absolutely fabulous, love her!
I was glad to read how Ian came to view Katrine's reasons for the choices she made.
This book will not disappoint. In true NMT style, this book is sarcastic, sweet, and saucy all wrapped up in one great read!

I was given an ARC by the author for an honest review so here goes.
I was very happy to have had a chance to read this book. It was great getting to see the happy ending for an amazing character in this series. I definitely recommend this book since it was a perfect compliment to the original series.I was happy to see Ian get his turn. The story flowed and it was enjoyable. One of the things I like most about this author's writing is that her stories are relatable. She does this again with this book. It included the sexy, the funny and the real. Definitely recommend this book and looking forward to reading more from this author.

Did somebody say Ian Radcliffe? Give me a minute while I swoon.

To me, there's nothing sexier than a tall dark hunk of a man who is a genuine nice guy, assertive in the bedroom, and *ahem* can play the guitar, which is why Ian became a book boyfriend way back in the days of Rebound and which is also why I couldn't wait to get my paws on a copy of Chasing the Sun.

The story of Ian continues in Austin, a quirky Texas town, where Ian takes on a temporary assignment with his architecture firm. He quickly meets two ladies, both strong female characters, both unconventional beauties who quickly spin their webs and trap him right in the middle of confusion. Does he want friendship? Does he want love? Does he want a quickie wham bam thank you ma'am? You'll have to read to find out.

I found myself falling more and more in love with Ian as I turned each page. He's sensitive, yet aggressive. He's charming, yet arrogant. He's committed, yet flippant. He's a diverse piece of work wrapped up in a beautiful package with steely blue eyes, and I...could...not...get..enough...Ian.

My only disappointment was that it ended. I could read about Ian all day, all night, all year. He's a 10, and this sweet novella is five giant stars. My favorite so far in this series. What are you waiting for? Go one click now.

Nikki Thompson never disappoints, and Chasing the Sun is no exception. From the moment I read her first book, Rebound, Nikki became one of my favorite authors. She has since followed up Rebound with Resilient and two novellas and I couldn’t enjoy them more. Nikki knows how to write strong, intelligent, witty, smart-mouth females like no one I know. There are no “woe is me, my man broke up with me, whatever will I do” chicks in her books. Woo Hoo…yay for that! What about the men you ask, well Ian Radcliffe is as hot as they come and as our luck would have it, he’s quite sensitive too…in his manly way. This is the first book in the Rebound series of novels and novellas that has a male lead, and Nikki proves she can write one hell of a male character as well.

Not one for spoilers or recaps, I won’t do that here. I’ll just tell you that this novella had me laughing, crying (OMG…don’t get me started on why!), a little angry and ultimately very, very satisfied. That’s another thing Nikki does well, endings! Yep, like nobody’s business. I can’t wait to see what she delivers to us next. If you want mature characters, some heat, intelligence, wit and a lot of heart…look no further! Chasing the Sun as well as the entire Rebound series delivers all of the above and then some!

A fast read that will leave you wanting even more of Ian.

He is just OMG. I cannot get enough of him. Such a good hearted, loving, ,man. And so perfect in all the right places. I am also glad that he finally listened to his heart, that was the touching point for me, like, YESSSS, he found someone just as great as him. They will be awesome together, although I was still heart broken for him over Katrine, this little spit fire he ended up with was perfect. It's always good to have a relationship where you can laugh, joke, be serious, and understand eachother, and that's exactly what these two have.

Just loved this book. Thanks for another great read.
I am looking forward to the book coming in December, will the whole gang!!!

Five Stars for Ian, well actually for this ARC I so humbly had the pleasure of receiving from the awesome NMT! Ian, Ian, Ian...he is a pure swoon worthy book boyfriend! He is sincere, he is real, he is such a catch! In Nikki's other books he is a picture perfect guy friend and a great lover who gets left behind with a broken heart from our beloved Katrine in Rebound and Resilient, but he gets his own fun and steamy story in Chasing The Sun, and I enjoyed every minute of it!

Nikki has an amazing way of telling a story that is relatable, endearing and utmost fun filled with banter and laughs! This one includes Ian recovering from his heartbreak with Katrine and sets out to Austin on a new assignment which brings him to meet two refreshing new women, Trey & Rory.

He meets Trey, the hot, spunky and sweet bartender working through Law School, and they have an instant connection, he is attracted to her looks and personality, and they become instant best friends...with some very hot underlying sexual desires. They share one hot night together, and it makes for some drama, as Ian didn't mean to make Trey feel used, but Trey is hurt a bit by his actions, and after Ian apologizes they become playfully platonic again, Ian "needs" her friendship. Ian knows he will return to Big D and he wants to keep things simple.

Ian also meets Rory, in the same bar, and he is enamoured by her beauty, voice and free spirited demeanor, as she performs on stage. Ian, while still remaining good friends with Trey, develops a mainly sexual relationship with Rory, and although he enjoys the company, and steamy nights with Rory he becomes conflicted with his feelings as she becomes more attached to him than he desires. Again, Ian knows all good things will come to an end when his temporary move to Austin ends. But he's a "good-guy" & doesn't want to hurt anyone.

Trey although an awesome friend, has real feelings for Ian...she's falling for him. Ian and Rory have some beautifully enjoyable steamy scenes, but there is still conflict in Ian's head. Ian must make some tough decisions before he moves back to Austin, without breaking hearts, yes 2 hearts, not just one!

So what will Ian do?
Does he break some hearts?
Does he end up with an awesome best friend?
Does Ian move back to the Big D empty handed?
Broken hearted again? You MUST read to find out the end and new beginnings for Ian! You'll be wishing you were Rory in a few scenes, you'll be wishing you could be as cool as Trey, you'll laugh & swoon your way through. I guarantee Nikkis books are worth your time, and look forward to more!

Nikki brings us bright characters with great personalities and paints a perfect picture of their thoughts and emotions. These characters are so very likeable and enjoyable, you feel like you understand them and you relate to them easily. You really have to root for Ian in this book. I already loved his sweet character from the former books and want him to find an awesome chick and a HEA. He's definitely enjoyed himself in the book, and I enjoyed every minute of his fun and steamy story, and must recommend as an enjoyable time for all!

Review originally posted at Ramblings From This Chick

Chasing the Sun is a novella in Nikki Mathis Thompson's Rebound series. This novella is Ian's story and can easily be read as a standalone. I had never read any of the other books in this series and had no problem getting into this story. I really enjoyed Ian's story, and I definitely want to go back and read the others after this one though.

After having his heart broken when the girl he loved chose someone else, Ian Radcliffe heads out of town to throw himself into his work. A few months away is just what he needs. Ian heads to a local bar where he meets a sassy bartender named Trey. They instantly hit it off and begin to form a strong friendship. They are also both attracted to one another and after Ian loses his dog Ruby, Trey offers him a night to forget it all. Despite their night together, they both struggle with taking their relationship beyond friendship and decide not to pursue anything. When Ian meets local singer Rory, he finds himself attracted to her as well and they begin to see one another. But things quickly get complicated when Ian struggles to put his feelings for Trey aside, and he can't help but feel jealous at the thought of her with anyone else. Can Ian figure out which girl he belongs with or will neither of them be the girl for him? And what happens when his project is done and he is set to return home and must leave both girls behind?

I really liked Ian. He was really sweet and had a great sense of humor. He was sexy and confident despite being left by the woman he thought was the one for him. I loved how caring he was, and it was so adorable how much he loved his dog Ruby and made her his priority. I thought that Ian had great chemistry with Trey and they were a match on all levels. These two just seemed made for each other, and I loved their banter. Trey was so great. She was one of those cool chicks that you would love to hang out with in real life. Smart and sassy, she was comfortable in her own skin and it showed. I loved her from the start, and was rooting for her the whole way through. I didn't really care for Rory. There was nothing bad about her, but there was nothing to really like either. She just seemed to be a place holder and time killer for Ian, and I didn't feel a connection between them at all. She was just sort of blah to me and I couldn't wait to get through her parts and back to Trey.

Overall, I think that this was a really good quick romance. I loved seeing Ian heal from his heartbreak and finally begin to move on. He deserved someone that would love him above all others, and I think that he ended up where he should have. Chasing the Sun was really entertaining, and I found myself swooning from the sweetness as well as laughing out loud. If you are looking for a great way to spend a few hours, I would definitely recommend this story. I look forward to reading more from Nikki Mathis Thompson in the future and can't wait to read the rest of this series.

So this book is a little special for me. This author is a little special for me as well. She is actually the first author I reached out to on Facebook to say ‘I loved your book Rebound, but you broke my heart”. She was also the first author to give me an ARC for Resilient. It was in these books that we first meet Ian Radcliffe. He totally got the short end of the stick and I demanded, ok demanded is a big word, but I harassed her and basically told her you better be writing Ian’s book. I mean he is hands down the nicest guy I have every read about. Well till now…Oh Ian Ian Ian…WE need to talk.

So now he is off to Austin, for a new adventure. You know what they say “Out with the old, in with the new”. And what adventures he finds. He actually finds two, count em, two adventures. If you're wondering what I mean by adventures- I mean women! This is where we need to talk. You know it’s not good to have two girls, it's not good and it’s not nice, Ian, you of all people should know this.

Meet Trey, can I say now- she is favorite. She's the bartender from the bar down the street. Except, she’s actually in law school. This girl is smart! So smart she decides that their relationship is going to be friendship only. I mean yeah she finds him hot, after all this is Ian we are speaking about, but she knows he’s leaving when he finishes his work, so friends it is. I actually loved their friendship, it was like best friends. I mean best friends that want to do the nasty together.

Meet Rory. Adventure Number two. I tried oh I tried to like this girl. Ok not really, I mean I rolled my eyes every time she was around. Ok so Rory, she’s a singer, see rolling your eyes, she “puts men under her spell”, ugh I know, I should give her a chance.

So now he has all these new friendships, what's a guy to do? Well he’s a guy so we can’t expect too much. But what happens when he has to face the fact that his work is over and he's going to be moving back home,? Is his heart really back home or is it in Austin? And then the question is who will he be chasing, and will they want to be caught?

This is another great read from Nikki Mathis Thompson, and I was excited to see Karine in the end!!!

When readers last saw Ian Radcliffe at the end of Resilient, he was heartbroken and angry; he thought he did everything right to get Katrine in the end, and she still ended up going back to Xander. Destroyed by her rejection, Ian gets the perfect opportunity for distance when his design is chosen for a building in Austin, so he packs up and heads out, hoping that time and space will help him to heal and move on. Ian never thought in a million years that he would grow to understand the conflict Katrine felt in choosing between him and Xander, but all it takes is two special women to make him see that things are not as black and white as he once thought.

Trevia “Trey” Swartz is the beautiful barmaid he meets soon after he arrives in Austin, and they instantly hit it off. They start up a fast friendship, and even though there’s a pull between them, Ian doesn’t want to risk a falling out by acting on that attraction, but the deeper feelings are always at the surface waiting for the chance to spark. Aurora “Rory” Monroe mesmerizes Ian with her voice and her body. She’s a free spirit looking for a good time, and for Ian, that’s something he needs after what he went through with Katrine. But despite his physical relationship with Rory, Trey’s always there as Ian’s friend, so Ian’s heart is torn between the two.

When it’s time for Ian to go back home, will he give into his feelings for Trey, stay with Rory, or go back to chasing the sun?

I’m so glad that Ian was able to find his own happiness, and I love that his experience with Trey and Rory helped him, in a way, to heal and forgive Katrine for everything that happened. I have to admit, there were times in the novella when I wanted to shake Ian. I was 100% Team Trey throughout the entire book; they seemed perfect for each other, but maybe that was the issue for Ian…maybe that’s what scared him off. I understand why he pursued Rory, but it still didn’t sit well with me. Sure, people’s track records shouldn’t define who they are, but when your good friend is telling you to stay away, there’s a reason. Could it have been jealousy on Trey’s part absolutely, but Trey also wants Ian to be happy, and she clearly proves that with her actions throughout the entire text.

Let the sun catch you…

I think when it’s all said and done, Ian finally understands the difference between chasing something/someone and allowing that something/someone to find you; it may have taken him a bit longer than usual, and he may regret some of the things that happened along the way, but if everything happens for a reason, it led him down that path, and he’s learned from every experience that occurred. He finds what he needs, which is what all of us want to be able to do.

This was my first experience reading a Nikki Mathis Thompson Book and I can honestly say I really enjoyed it! I was hooked with the sexy heartbroken architect. While this is the second in the series I had absolute no trouble reading it without reading the first but I will say after reading this novella I would be very interested in reading more in this series.

“She cocked one hip to the side just ever so slightly and crossed her arms in front of her. He didn’t notice the heart shape her ample mounds made above the tight white tank she was wearing. No, not at all. Thoughts of motor boating would be totally inappropriate. Then stop making the sounds in your head you hard dick.”

Ian has had his heart stomped on and in order to start over he is going to move from Dallas to Austin for a few months to work on a project. While there he stumbles into the bar down the street from where he is living and meets Trey (yes that is is girl and a nickname). Trey is a spunky and sexy bartender who Ian instantly connects with. While he finds her very sexy they form a very firm friendship long before anything happens . I love the wit and banter between them and was rooting for this one from the beginning.

“So this is what ir felt like? If he’d had tits this would be considered the walk of shame. But he didn’t have tits. No! He had a dick, a big one, and balls full of sperm. Hell yeah I do! No shame in his game.”

Enter everyman’s wet dream, Rory. Rory is the singer in the bar and instantly attracts men wherever she goes. Ian is no exception and when Rory needs a temporary guitar player to fill in, musically inclined Ian is happy to volunteer. The sexual chemistry of these two is off the charts and Rory might be just what he needs to move on.

“I miss you too, Ian. And have fun down there . . . and please, for the love of God, let someone play with your pickle.”

Oh love triangles, I have such a love/hate relationship with them. I can’t stop reading them but no other storyline gives me more anxiety. Nikki did a great job in developing characters you really real like you know and I am so happy I had the chance to read this fun fast read. BTW Emphasis on FUN! I LOVED the witty writing especially Ian’s banter with his best friend Maddie (the sister of the girl who broke his heart.)

Nikki, Nikki, you out did yourself AGAIN. You truly know how to give us what we want with your books. You have managed to give us a bit of every character in your stories. I fallen in love with Xander, Charlie, Katrine, Maddie and Now Ian!!!! You go girl.

Many of us Rebound/Resilient fans fell in love with Xander and Katrine love story. However, in Resilient we all were lost for words with the whole "Hammock" scene in Mexico. Didn't think Ian had it in him to be so out of the box. At that time I saw Ian Radcliffe in a different way. At that point he wasn't just the nice guy that Katrine was friends with. He was "The Guy that change our point of view on using a Hammock". Thank you for that Nikki. Loved Resilient, left you wondering and wanting more on Ian. So I was very excited to hear that Mrs. Thompson dedicated a book for just Ian.

Chasing the sun is a short novella. After what happened to Ian and Katrine. Ian decided to take a chance with a job opportunity in Austin. He packs his stuff, got his dog Ruby, and headed out to a new adventure. He wasn't just broken hearted, he was mostly hurt by how everything turned out to be.

In this story you'll see another Ian. You still will see the nice guy but also a guy being a guy. Very attracted and friendly. He managed to meet and make friends easily. Don't want to give out too much. But this book you could read by its self or you could read Resilient. The writer is so funny and makes you feel like you want more. You don't want to stop reading. It's one of my favorite things about this author. Another thing, her soundtracks are so cool. Makes you think about the scene when you hear it. I recommend this book to any reader.

Having just lost the girl he loves, and feeling like nice guys finish last, Ian Radcliffe wants to get the heck out of Dodge, or, well, Dallas. With his guitar and his dog, Ruby, in tow, Ian heads for Austin for a 3-month work project, with hopes that a change of scenery will heal his broken heart. Once settled in his new life, Ian finds plenty to fill his time, and two different women to help him with his heart.

Likeable characters, an engaging storyline, and a friends-to-lovers romance are generally a recipe for a good book, and CHASING THE SUN is no exception. Although there are two prior books and a novella in this series, I didn't feel like I was missing out on backstory at all. Nikki Mathis Thompson has written a book that is both easy to read and completely entertaining. I must admit though, that Ian made me want to kick him in the head a few times. I got that he had been burned, and so wasn't really looking to commit, but, for a 36-year-old man, he just came off as extremely cavalier and sometimes immature. By the end of the book, though, he had redeemed himself and won me over. I absolutely LOVE Trey. She's the chick that I would want to hang out with, and she can more than hold her own with Ian. The world definitely needs more Treys. Rory, Maddie, and the rest of the supporting characters bring a lot of fun and uniqueness to CHASING THE SUN, and made this a book that I did not want to put down. It also made me want to go back and read the rest of the REBOUND series, and I am looking forward to the final installment of the series, due out at the end of 2014.

I wasn't a big fan of Ian's in Resilent because I didn't want Katrine with him. So I wasn't so sure how I'd like his story! I did go into this book with an open mind! And boy am I glad! I love Ian!

He really came into his own in this book and loved the direction that Nikki took him on.

I wasn't feeling Rory and I told Nikki this! I told her I'm not so sure about her BUT I love Ian with Trey! I see he likes Rory because in a way she isn't someone who does the relationship thing, according to Trey. And then there's Trey! Who tells you like it is! She holds nothing, well almost nothing back! She is a good friend to Ian!

I loved how Ian and Trey formed a tight friendship and LOVED that Ian ended up having the same dilemma that Katrine found herself in. Turn about fair play!

So who does Ian choice to be with Trey or Rory?!?! And the "Hammock" does make an appearance!

I would LOVE for more of Ian!

Heartbroken after his relationship with Katrina is over in such a harsh way, Ian decides to take a job and relocates to Austin hoping to find healing there. Then on his first night there he meets Trey who becomes a friend who borders on the more than line clearly. Then comes Rory the singer who calls to him with that whole free spirited vibe. Then comes the guilt because he has developed feelings for both women. He has kept Trey in that friend zone, but delves into an affair with Rory. Thing is that he is going back home soon and who will be going back with him?

I was totally team Trey. I just loved her. She's sassy and funny and smart.

I give Chasing the Sun 4 hearts!
