“There once was a stripper named Troy,
Who acted quite dumb as a ploy.
He took off his pants,
Did a butt-shaking dance,
And said, ‘Viewers, I hope you enjoy!’
“I can’t believe she’s separating us,” I say to Will. “This sucks.”
“She’s probably just intimidated by the hazardous level of awesome radiating from our lane.”
I wriggle out of my jeans and toss them onto a deck chair. And then I join Will at the pool’s edge, holding my head high like Dominique would. Who cares if I have a shoelace tied around my head like the biggest dork in the world? Who cares if my butt is covered in neon-colored smiley-faces? If I act like I’m the hottest thing ever, like nothing I’m doing is ridiculous or scary, maybe everyone else will be fooled.”
Maybe there's nothing real about this show, but I'm a real person with real emotions.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
It surprises me how much I love this book....
So, it did took me a while to finish 'For Real' because I kept getting distracted with TWC (another far-too swoon-worthy book that I can't possibly describe in 20000 characters) but, nevertheless, I finished it today. The only thing it pains me is how underrated this book is!
This book tells the story of two sister that are the complete opposite of one another. Miranda: outstanding, fun and brave; And Claire: too-shy for her own good, 'a nerd' and a usual chicken. But, when Miranda gets cheated by her boyfriend, she and her sister pair up to enter a reality TV show, in which that shitty boyfriend will be part of, so they can get revenge on him by winning.
For starters: the idea is r-e-v-o-l-u-c-i-o-n-a-r-y. Maybe it's just my too-small knowledge about books, but I've never seen a book like this. Yes, there's the revenge contemporaries. Yes, there may be some contest-winning books too- but I've never seen the two ideas combine in such a perfect way as this author was able to do.
One of the things I loved about this book was that it didn't ended with the usual 'And they lived happily ever after'. In contemporaries, most of the time, when there's a couple, we end with them, the boy and the girl, living a joyful and happy future. Here, Cherry had no shame at putting that crap aside. She used the bare and shameful truth to point the obvious: Boys can be absolute jerks sometimes. And that some persons will do anything to achieve their ends (Slytherin reference tho)
The other aspect I loved about this book was Claire's character development. She starts as this shy, clever girl who feels overprotected by her older sister. As the contest goes on, she comes closer to a certain boy (yeah, roll your eyes whatever you want) and finds the courage she kept inside of her. Slowly, Claire became less shy- yet, she let love guide her decisions (not only the love for her sister). At the end, it took me by surprise to see our main protagonist as someone who did what she did (no spoilers ;) ). Such a reckless choice, even for someone who 'wasn't really playing', it still proved itself as a real plot twist.
I really like Claire! She recognized the mistakes she made but she also saw the way they changed her and didn't regret nor feared that change. Claire learned to turn fear and regret into happiness. Mistakes may damage you but, if you were able to make thought them, then that means they also improved you- there's a saying here in Portugal for that: 'Há males que vêm por bem' which, in my research, translates to 'Every cloud has a silver lining.'.
It's a good lesson- one that I intend to use in the not-so-far-away future. Hope all of you liked my review xx
PS: I also forgot to mention that this book is completely hilarious.

“But at this moment, with the candlelight dancing on my face and my fingers twined with Will’s, I feel like I could belong anywhere.” (Hardcover, page 216)
