For Real

From Alison Cherry, author of Red, a novel PW declares “sparkles with wit,” comes a terrific new book about two sisters and one big how do you know who’s for real?

No parents. No limits. No clue what they’re in for.

Shy, cautious Claire has always been in her confident older sister’s shadow. While Miranda’s life is jam-packed with exciting people and whirlwind adventures, Claire gets her thrills vicariously by watching people live large on reality television.

When Miranda discovers her boyfriend, Samir, cheating on her just after her college graduation, it’s Claire who comes up with the perfect plan. They’ll outshine Miranda’s fame-obsessed ex while having an amazing summer by competing on Around the World, a race around the globe for a million bucks. Revenge + sisterly bonding = awesome.

But the show has a twist, and Claire is stunned to find herself in the middle of a reality-show romance that may be just for the cameras. This summer could end up being the highlight of her life . . . or an epic fail forever captured on film. In a world where drama is currency and manipulation is standard, how can you tell what’s for real?

I received a free hardcover of this book from the publisher (Random House) and e-copy of this copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

2.5 of 5 stars (Please read my rating system further below). My favorite part about For Real would definitely have to be that it was original and unlike any contemporary novel I've read before. I found it super creative to have the story take place inside and outside of a reality TV show. It was great seeing main character Claire transform from a very introverted shy girl who was always shadowed by her older sister into a more outgoing and confident version of herself because of her experiences on and off the show. My biggest problem about For Real would've been Claire's older sister Miranda. Miranda was not a good sister and it bothered me a lot that she would not realize what she was doing to Claire. Other than that, this was a very cute and short read that I read in almost one sitting! It was definitely something different and I'm glad BookBusters chose to read this as one of our contemporary reads.

My rating system: (I do use half stars.)
5 - I do not use the 5 star. Not because a book might not be worthy, but because a book is never perfect.
4 - I loved it! There weren't too many flaws, and I had no trouble getting through it. (A 4 star rating is the highest rating I've ever given a book.)
3 - I enjoyed the book, but there we're flaws that made me enjoy it less.
2 - I finished the book, but there were too many flaws for me to enjoy it.
1 - I could not finish the book, and I probably did not finish it....

So, yesterday I got a box of December ARCs from the fantastic folks at Random House and thought to myself: "Wow, that is so cool! And so.. early!", and I was ready to toss it under the bed for future reading (you know, closer to the publishing date). But before I did that, I sat down to closer inspect the books. I started reading the synopsis, etc. And then, on a whim, I decided to read a few pages of For Real (OK, I admit, it looked like a perfect summer read!).

5 hours and one skipped meal later, I was sitting on the couch with a huge grin stuck to my face, with my belly hurting from all the laughing.

For Real, was AMAZING. For real!! Charming, clever, sharp, fresh, humorous and completely captivating! Loved it. I can not believe this book is publishing in December, and not right now. It's such a fantastic, feel-good, summer read. If you can get your hands on an ARC, do it ASAP. You will have so much fun reading this book.

And OMG. Will Divine! Will. Freaking DIVINE

That was the first time I've stayed up way too late to finish a book in a whiiiile. But it was really fun, with a great, well-executed premise; fun, layered characters; solid character development; and a great sisterly relationship that made me wish mine were here to hug. Really well paced, though to be honest I would've happily read another hundred pages.

It wasn't that this book wasn't good. It was pretty good, but it wasn't what I was expecting based on the blurb. It's not a romance. If you're looking for a travel-the-globe-on-a-reality-show romance, you're going to be sorely disappointed like I was.

This book wants to be about sisterly bonding or whatever, but I had a lot of issues with the way the older sister (Miranda) acted towards the younger sister and main character (Claire). My sister and I are the same age difference these characters are and I would never treat her as terribly as Miranda treated Claire.

This is why the epilogue felt so unsatisfying. Not only does Claire , but you (at least I didn't) don't get the sense that the sisters' relationship has actually improved on any real level. A set of grand gestures isn't enough.

All in all, this novel is pretty weak on every point. The character development is lacking when it comes to everyone but Claire, the entire premise of the reality show is amazingly cheesy, and none of the relationships, platonic or romantic, are satisfying on any level.

So while I didn't hate reading this book, I definitely don't recommend it.

This story is really really good and way better than I thought it would be. After reading this Claire and Miranda should become heroes to all females.

Summary: Claire is a TV nut. She loves any and everything about TV and can tell you about any show (even the bad ones). So when her sister Miranda finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her they decided to get revenge ... and they do it on TV.

My Opinion: So from the beginning I thought I knew what this story was all about and what would happen. But I didn't ... this story kept surprising me and that's why I gave it 5 stars. It's really good but there are alot of really good stories that aren't worth 5 stars. This isn't one of them.

Characters: Claire is one of the best protagonists ever! She isn't perfect and we get to see her embarrass herself more than anyone in this story. She's very easy to relate to and I couldn't help but to like her.

Miranda did piss me off a little bit but me being the youngest of me and my sister I related more to Claire. I get the whole sister relationship. Just like Claire and Miranda me and my sister are close too but we can't get along either. And I think that Alison Cherry showed real sister relationships perfectly.

I have to admit after reading this story I felt played ... but I can't tell you why because that would just give the whole story away. I mean Cherry has to be a genius because like a lot of what happened in this story I never saw THAT coming!

Overall: Like I said this is a really good story and I think it's perfect for alot of young adult and new adult female readers (guys just won't understand). It's way better than I thought it would be and I couldn't find anything wrong with the writing either. This was my first story from Alison Cherry but after reading this it won't be my last.

Claire’s sister Miranda caught her boyfriend cheating on the night of her college graduation party. With her life in shambles Miranda moves back in with her parents and sister. It is Claire who plots the best revenge. Claire and Miranada are going to be on Around the World the same show Miranda’s cheating ex is going to be participating in…and they’re gong to make sure he goes down!

For Real read like a reality TV show. There was a lot of running from place to place, crazy challenges, and plotting. This format moved the story along quickly and it was rewarding to see how much Claire changed with each completed task. This format though didn’t allow us to get to know the secondary characters, or see the whole picture of the story which was a minor qualm I had.

By far my favorite thing about For Real was the way Cherry portrayed the sister relationship between Claire and Miranda. Miranda has been away at college for the last four years and she still sees Claire as the shy child she was when she left. I loved watching them support each other throughout the race and seeing their relationship change from a childhood one to a more adult friendship. This part of the story felt utterly true to life.

Overall, For Real was a quick, cute, read. It is perfect if you’re looking for a light read with a great sibling relationship. It made me smile, laugh, and want to text my own sister!

"Reality tv is the great equalizer"

What a wonderfully hilarious book. I don't watch reality tv, but I've seen the news articles and heard the stories. It all sounds so cut-throat and ugly.

For starters, I love Claire. She says she's shy and scared, but she seems pretty awesome to me. Add to that Miranda, the spurned girlfriend and shake that around with a reality "Race around the world" to compete with Miranda's ex-boyfriend - ugh, you have a wonderful mix.

This is light and fluffy and has so many laugh-out-loud moments that it's just non-stop enjoyment. I'm glad I didn't have to do any of these things. I'm even glad I didn't watch reality TV of people doing these things
But reading it was perfect!

I was pretty much sold on FOR REAL by the end of the first paragraph, when heroine Claire muses, "I wish I were watching this on a real television. I fear I'm missing the nuances of his six-pack." Claire is a reality-television addict, because she wants to work in TV herself and it is the great equalizing genre.

It's always been her weird hobby, but when her sister Miranda dumps her cheating boyfriend, Claire decides to help Miranda get revenge. It just so happens that a slot has opened up for two new teams on the reality show Sanjay's been bragging about appearing on. It's the perfect opportunity to humiliate him in front of the whole world.

The reality show Around the World takes clear inspiration from The Amazing Race with a dating-show twist. I loved all the descriptions of the contests and could've read even more of crazy faux-cultural activities enlivened by forced bonding. There's nice character work to back up the humor of the competitions. Most of the competitors only get a little shading, but there are hints of them having their own lives. Claire works on coming out of her bubble, falling for fellow contestant Wes, and redefining her relationship with her sister now that they're both adults.

FOR REAL was exactly the light and frothy read I needed when I picked it up. It's fun and effortlessly charming. The relationship between the sisters is terrific - it has realistic ups and downs, but they've always got each other's backs when the chips are down. This may be a short read, but it's a good one.

If you need a pick-me-up, I highly recommend FOR REAL. It's light fare well executed, like the best of reality shows. (And unlike many real-life dating reality shows, it remembers LGBT people exist, in a nice touch.) This one put a smile on my face as big as the smiles on the hardcover.

If there's one thing this book has taught it is to NEVER JOIN A RACE WITH MY SISTER.

I love my sister, she is smart and logical and hard-working. But if we ever had to undergo a stressful event such a competition we'd probably tear each other's hair out.

This book has made me appreciate my family relationships a bit more. I loved seeing Claire grow into a more strong and mature character. Her relationship with Miranda was touching and I loved them both. The Amazing Race-inspired plot was really good. I would love to be a part of a competition like that but probably with a guy friend or someone who compliments my weaknesses.

I saw through Will's facade early on but I still wish he got tarred and feathered. I can understand how Claire fell for him though, some people feel a rush of attraction towards a significant other when they experience an exciting event together. That and the fact that Will was a manipulating asshat. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to Amazing Race fans.

This was EXACTLY the book I needed this past weekend. Though I'm a big fan of The Amazing Race -- which some of this book is definitely modeled on -- I haven't found much success with YA books that take place on reality shows. A lot of books like that use the reality TV premise to create a lot of manufactured drama.

Yes, there was some drama in this, but the good kind. And I loved that this book used the backdrop of reality TV to write a moving, character-driven story that raises interesting questions about the nature of "reality" on TV ... and in life. Plus, its a sister story AND a girl power story. Really, (heh!) what's not to like about that?

If you are a fan of reality TV -- and that's fine with me -- there are some hilarious made-up shows in the book.

PS If you're curious, my only other favorite reality TV YA is Something Real by Heather Demetrios. Highly recommend that book and this one!

What a great story about a relationship between two sisters!!! Claire’s sister, Miranda, caught her boyfriend cheating on her. In order to get back at Miranda’s ex Claire says they should go on the same reality show that he is going on. Little do they know is the show is not what they expected it to be.

I have to admit I read this story in one day, completely taking full advantage of the rainy day we were having. This was such a great read that kept me engaged the whole time and I could not put it down!!!! I am also a huge fan of Amazing Race and loved that the reality show in the book was just like the show. Each time a clue was read, I heard Phil Keoghan’s voice explaining each challenge, a plus for sure!!!

The relationship between Claire and her sister was very believable; they treated each other how some sisters really do act. Even though they had their issues they were there for each other very step of the way. I think that they both grew and developed with in the book as well.

The last thing I have to say is that is not how I thought the book would end?!?!?! Most times when reading a story you know what is going to happen, but in this case I was VERY wrong and I was never happier to be wrong.

For Real is a pretty fun book and a fast read. I was definitely engaged throughout my read, although I wouldn't say I enjoyed it that much. The two main characters, Claire and Miranda, don't have a lot of substance and come off as unpleasant people in almost every scene, making it hard to relate to them or root for them. Particularly in Claire's initial interactions with Troy, it becomes nearly impossible to feel pity for her. Thus, the happy ending feels a little off, when neither Claire nor Miranda have faced the hardships that one would expect for them to achieve character growth. But considering I'm not the target demographic, I can cut this book some slack. It was a fun read, and had me laughing out loud at times. :) Not a stand-out book, but pretty decent!

This was such a hilarious, fun read!!! I loved all of the different countries and everything, it was so different from anything I've read before! The reality show was such a fun component of the book and it was interesting to see the behind the scenes look of how reality shows seriously are. However I really enjoyed this book, there were parts that the protagonist Claire annoyed me so much! But in the end she really progressed as a character and became a better person.

I haven't read Since You've been Gone, but I have a feeling that if you enjoyed that book then you would definitely enjoy this one as well! :)

In the spirit of full disclosure, I didn’t care for Cherry’s debut novel, Red. I’d had high expectations and they crash landed. After that, I wasn’t planning on trying her sophomore effort unless some trusted reviewers enjoyed it. Then one day I got an itchy request finger, but I didn’t expect much to come of it since RH usually doesn’t approve (or deny) my NG requests; they sit there until the title disappears. This time, though, approval. What have I gotten myself into? I wondered. Turns out the answer to that was a whole lot of fun. Cherry’s For Real is funny, fast-paced, and full of joy for anyone who enjoys reality television.

Actually, I don’t like reality television. I know what I just said, and I stand by it, but also it might be worth a shot for certain people who don’t care for it. Personally, it’s mostly not my thing. That said, I do know just how addictive it can be, because the couple times I watched a reality show I ended up watching the full season. I’d turn on the TV, watch part of an episode and get sucked into the all day marathon. Much as I can spout off about the manufactured drama and all of that, they can be very entertaining. What I do unabashedly love are books about reality television. As a teen, there were a smattering of chick lit novels with that premise that I loved and earlier this year Something Real impressed me greatly. For Real centers on a different kind of reality show than those, but it was just as delightfully silly while also being surprisingly meaningful.

My favorite thing about For Real is the humor that comes through sometimes. Cherry has this ability to embrace the silly that I admire. Her invented reality TV shows are complete gold. An example is Obstacle Kitchen, where chefs have to compete to make the best dish while also dodging obstacles. The show that Miranda and Claire go on in search of vengeance is a perfect example as well. The challenges ought to be too strange for me to believe that they would be aired on television, and yet I could totally imagine this airing.

There’s also the Limerick Game that Miranda and Claire play. Cherry’s humor really gets a chance to shine with these. They’re just the right amount of quirky and they made me smile every time they came up. Here’s an example:

“There once was a stripper named Troy,
Who acted quite dumb as a ploy.
He took off his pants,
Did a butt-shaking dance,
And said, ‘Viewers, I hope you enjoy!’

These are so cute and funny and bantery. It’s also such a great bonding device for Claire and Miranda. They’ve done it throughout their childhoods and it comes out when they’re getting along well.

For Real focuses primarily on the relationship between Claire and her sister Miranda. There’s a little bit of romance, but it’s mostly family. If you asked Claire and Miranda at the beginning of the book, as someone does, they would tell you that they have a great relationship. Under the pressure of reality television, it soon becomes clear that they have serious issues with one another. What’s nice is that the drama isn’t entirely manufactured. The show brings up cracks that were hiding under the surface and forces the sisters to recognize them and deal with them.

Let’s rewind a bit and talk about Claire on her own. Claire’s sometimes tough to take. I ought to have loved her immediately, because she’s a pop culture fanatic and can’t handle crowds. However, be warned that Claire can be a bit tough to take. She’s so judgmental that it made me uncomfortable and I’m one of the most judgmental people I know. It’s all made more annoying when Claire’s whole thing is that she wants people (especially Miranda) to look beneath her shy exterior and see how amazing she is, though she herself judges everyone else off their surface level. The thing is, though, that Claire gets better as the novel goes along.

The reality show is ridiculous, but it forces her to do things that she wouldn’t ordinarily do. She has to get outside of her comfort zone. It’s painful at times, but she survives and comes through the experience much stronger than she was before. Perhaps more important, Claire gets stuck talking to people she ordinarily would not give the time of day. I’ve been there myself and had these revelations. There’s nothing like getting to know real people better than from a distance to clear up those initial prejudices. When Troy, a male stripper, called her out for being rude and judgmental, I had the feeling that Claire would actually be learning and changing. She does, and I think her emotional arc is really solid. I also really liked the way her romance was handled.

This is why I like giving authors second chances. Even if Red wasn’t your thing, you might like For Real. I’m definitely planning on checking out whatever Cherry’s third book is.

Ahhh. :) That was perfect. Exactly what I needed to get me relaxed and smiling again. Sometimes books are heavy and take a lot out of me emotionally. Not this one. It was my guilty pleasure type of story, the kind that causes me to smile throughout and leaves me with happy feelings when I finish it.

Claire’s sister, Miranda, walks in on her boyfriend in a compromising situation. She’s extremely upset, as is Claire. No one messes with her sister. So the two girls decide that revenge is the best option to deal with this situation. They find out that Miranda’s exboyfriend is going to be on a reality tv show, and they set out to make sure they too can be on this show and beat the cheating exboyfriend, and embarrass him as much as possible in the process. Of course the producers are more than happy to hear about a drama-filled revenge story, and quickly cast the two sisters on their show.

I’m not a huge reality tv fan, but there are a few that I’m usually found watching. The Bachelor, especially. It’s like my hidden guilty pleasure. Yes, I’m aware that reality tv is anything but reality… but it’s still entertaining. For Real is that exact type of story. It very similar to The Amazing Race, yet there’s also a love component thrown in. So as the contestants are racing across the country, finding cards to tell them their next destination and accompany activity, they are also thrown into romantic situations in hope of finding a love connection along the way. Fun, right?! :)

I loved Claire! That girl had spunk! Though somewhat socially awkward and inexperienced when it comes to the opposite sex, she sprung to life and stepped up when it was needed. No one was going to screw over her sister, not if she had anything to do about it. Miranda seemed to look down on Claire a lot and point out her flaws, though most of them were flaws she had as a young child and not necessarily things she was dealing with at the current time. Miranda had great difficulty accepting that Claire has grown up quite a bit and no longer needs to be taken care of… and at times, walked all over by her sister. But Claire didn’t let this hold her back. She used these thoughts and actions of her sister’s to encourage her to grow as a person, become stronger, and beat what had to be beaten. I loved her character so much!

Claire meets one of the other contestants early on and quickly acknowledges her feelings for him. He’s sweet, kind, and has the smiley eyes of a God. She can’t help but feel butterflies when he looks at her. She wants nothing more than to be his teammate and win this race with him… as well as win his affection. But during this game there are times when team members are able to “steal” other team members. Though Claire was determined to stay with Will indefinitely, other contestants had their own ideas.

“I can’t believe she’s separating us,” I say to Will. “This sucks.”
“She’s probably just intimidated by the hazardous level of awesome radiating from our lane.”

There were several games that really challenged Claire physically, as well as emotionally. I loved how each obstacle Claire tackled wasn’t just for the game… it was also a huge accomplishment in her life.

I wriggle out of my jeans and toss them onto a deck chair. And then I join Will at the pool’s edge, holding my head high like Dominique would. Who cares if I have a shoelace tied around my head like the biggest dork in the world? Who cares if my butt is covered in neon-colored smiley-faces? If I act like I’m the hottest thing ever, like nothing I’m doing is ridiculous or scary, maybe everyone else will be fooled.”

This story was SO MUCH FUN!! It was exactly what I needed, and I’m so happy I decided to grab it when I did. If you’re looking for a quick, cute, carefree type read that’s just FUN, I’d definitely recommend giving this a try. Though this is my first Alison Cherry book, it definitely won’t be my last.

Maybe there's nothing real about this show, but I'm a real person with real emotions.

It surprises me how much I love this book....

description

So, it did took me a while to finish 'For Real' because I kept getting distracted with TWC (another far-too swoon-worthy book that I can't possibly describe in 20000 characters) but, nevertheless, I finished it today. The only thing it pains me is how underrated this book is!

This book tells the story of two sister that are the complete opposite of one another. Miranda: outstanding, fun and brave; And Claire: too-shy for her own good, 'a nerd' and a usual chicken. But, when Miranda gets cheated by her boyfriend, she and her sister pair up to enter a reality TV show, in which that shitty boyfriend will be part of, so they can get revenge on him by winning.

For starters: the idea is r-e-v-o-l-u-c-i-o-n-a-r-y. Maybe it's just my too-small knowledge about books, but I've never seen a book like this. Yes, there's the revenge contemporaries. Yes, there may be some contest-winning books too- but I've never seen the two ideas combine in such a perfect way as this author was able to do.

description

One of the things I loved about this book was that it didn't ended with the usual 'And they lived happily ever after'. In contemporaries, most of the time, when there's a couple, we end with them, the boy and the girl, living a joyful and happy future. Here, Cherry had no shame at putting that crap aside. She used the bare and shameful truth to point the obvious: Boys can be absolute jerks sometimes. And that some persons will do anything to achieve their ends (Slytherin reference tho)

The other aspect I loved about this book was Claire's character development. She starts as this shy, clever girl who feels overprotected by her older sister. As the contest goes on, she comes closer to a certain boy (yeah, roll your eyes whatever you want) and finds the courage she kept inside of her. Slowly, Claire became less shy- yet, she let love guide her decisions (not only the love for her sister). At the end, it took me by surprise to see our main protagonist as someone who did what she did (no spoilers ;) ). Such a reckless choice, even for someone who 'wasn't really playing', it still proved itself as a real plot twist.

I really like Claire! She recognized the mistakes she made but she also saw the way they changed her and didn't regret nor feared that change. Claire learned to turn fear and regret into happiness. Mistakes may damage you but, if you were able to make thought them, then that means they also improved you- there's a saying here in Portugal for that: 'Há males que vêm por bem' which, in my research, translates to 'Every cloud has a silver lining.'.

It's a good lesson- one that I intend to use in the not-so-far-away future. Hope all of you liked my review xx

PS: I also forgot to mention that this book is completely hilarious.

4.5 Sister Power stars. Review coming soon.

description

I've been reading a lot of paranormal and heavy themed books lately, so FOR REAL came at exactly the right time for me. I needed something fun and light to cleanse my pallet, so to speak. This book had it all; family, friendship, romance, and personal growth.

Claire's older sister Miranda catches her boyfriend in the act of cheating on her. To get back at the fame-loving cheater, Claire comes up with the idea to go on a "race-around-the-world" reality TV show that he has been chosen for. Miranda is completely on board, as she imagines Samir's face when Claire and Miranda win and get him kicked off the show. The TV execs have something completely different in mind.

When they all arrive at the welcome ceremony, the players all discover that they have joined a reality dating show. Yes, they will still have to race around the world, but it won't be with the teammate they came with. They will have to "date" different players in order to move ahead in the race.

Claire is immediately enamored with the playfully cute Will Divine. If she has to be separated from her sister, Will is definitely going to make it all okay. The problem is that Claire forgets that their whole purpose in doing the show is so that 'Team Revenge' can get Samir out. Claire also discovers that some people play nice, others play dirty, but in the end, are they all just playing the game?

I enjoyed this book a lot. The game challenges were very believable and completely fit in with the theme of the book. There were many sweet and swoony romantic parts that I wasn't really expecting, but appreciated. I guess the most surprising part for me was how much this book made me think. Although it was light, Claire's actions and choices as well as those of the other players made me examine myself a little bit and take a look at how quickly I sometimes judge people by how they appear.

The only thing that was questionable to me was the lack of parental appearance. However, both Claire and Miranda were technically adults, so the parents really weren't necessary.

Thank you NetGalley and Random Houe Children's/Delacorte Press for a free digital arc of this book. Here is my honest review.

Originally, I requested this book because it looked like a cute and fun read. I thought I'd give it 3 or 4 stars. I had not expected to love it so much as to give it 5 stars.

Claire and her sister Miranda were close once a upon a time, but ever since Miranda moved away from college, things have changed. Mainly, Claire has changed. She's still the same shy girl that Miranda is used to, but not so much a baby anymore. While Claire is frustrated that Miranda still treats her like a little kid, all she wants is Miranda to notice her.

On the other hand, Miranda has her life set. She's about to graduate from college and the plan is to move in with her boyfriend, Samir.

And then she catches Samir cheating on her.

This is the perfect time for Claire to be the supportive sister! Instead of the kiddish roll her sister has given her, Claire has a chance to shine and be the anchor in her sister's life. Miranda is obviously distraught and who can blame her?

Their solution? Go on the world racing show that Samir is on and beat his butt.

So simple, right? Except things hardly ever go as planned and Claire and Miranda are thrown into a race that they didn't expect...with an outcome neither of them could fathom.

Sister bonding time? Revenge on a cheating boyfriend? A world race? Count me in!

For Real is seriously fun. It's funny and heart warming. Miranda and Claire struggle accepting each other for who they are. And learning to accept each other on public tv isn't the ideal of places, especially with everyone else creating false personas for the camera. What's real? What's not?

As confusing as all that is, one of the contestants in the race is flirting with Claire. Is he be pretending or is he for real?

Where is the line of reality in a reality show and how much of it is fake?

For Real is an entertaining tale of two sisters who need to learn about themselves and each other for who they really are. And the ending of their adventure is totally satisfying.

When I saw this book I thought it looked like a really cute and fun book to read. It was really good and I loved the plot. It was funny, sweet, had different places involved, and gave me a better insight of how reality tv works. I loved the characters, especially Claire because I was able to relate to her the most. But really the book had a lot of factors that give you a good feeling. I loved all the little challenges they did, it gave me a better understanding of some cultures in different places. Claire was a shy girl with a phobia of dancing, but was loyal sister who wanted to get revenge on her sister's ex-boyfriend. She may have been inexperienced in relationships and boyfriends, but she still had really liked Will, who I didn't like. She wanted someone to like her and see who she really is. At the end of the book, she became braver and showed the world that she isn't some scared, little girl anymore. Will may not have had real feelings for her, but he had in a way helped her became a braver person and when you read the book, you'll understand. Plus, she was really funny and the things she did at the end of the book was just hilarious, I had tears in my eyes from laughing. Miranda was a good sister who may have patronized and protected her too much and wasn't seeing her for real. Plus it was annoying during the interviews when she made Claire look small and naive. But she was also hurt and suffering from her Samir, her ex-boyfriend and she really did care about Claire. The book showed how good their relationship is and how they learned more about each other. Will was okay in the beginning and then when you learn thruth about him, he isn't do good. I did expect romance in this book, but it was better this way with more family and sisters. The other characters on the show was good and funny too and it was really enjoyable seeing Claire turn better and who she was hiding from all the time. The ending was really good and tied up the book perfectly. It was funny and cute. This was my first novel by this author and I hope to read more by her soon. Enjoy!!!!!

When older sister Miranda's college boyfriend Samir is caught cheating on her at her college graduation it is younger sister Claire who comes up with the perfect plan for revenge. Claire is a big fan of reality television and wants to work in television herself when she finished college. When she learns that Samir has auditioned for a reality TV show, she convinces Miranda to try out with her for the same show to get revenge.

While waiting in line for the casting call, Claire meets Will Devine who is also trying out. Both teams are chosen but Claire and Miranda are surprised to find out that it is a dating show and that the two of them won't be partners. Miranda is doing all she can to avoid ever having Samir as a partner and Claire is doing all she can to have Will as a partner. This causes a lot of friction between Claire and Miranda. And, along the way, Claire forgets for a while that everyone on the show is acting - especially Will.

It was fun to watch the teams travel around the world and take part in "romantic" challenges that mimicked wedding customs. I particularly enjoyed the one where they had to find a ring attached to a goat's foot in a pen with lots of goats. I also liked the challenge when Claire had to dress in white and be smeared with goo by her partner. Along the way Claire comes out of her shell and learns that she is a strong, confident young woman. Not only does she have to convince her older sister that this is true but she also has to convince herself.

This was a fun story with lots of great lines and a great message too.

I was planning on reviewing this closer to its release date, but then I started reading and couldn't stop. I guess that's saying something.

This book wasn't what I was expecting, but strangely enough ... I'm glad. At the beginning, I thought I knew the direction this was going, but then some subtle shifts start occurring and I realized I was happy with how things were playing out. Of course, I don't want to give any spoilers, so I'm being cryptic. Sorry about that.

Many of the characters surprised me, and I liked how no one was one dimensional - everyone had their own motives and backgrounds, and Alison Cherry did a great job portraying that.

I enjoyed learning more about what happens behind the scenes of reality television. Some books breeze past the background and setting, but this one felt firmly researched, which is always a plus.

You all watch or have heard of the reality game show, The Amazing Race, right? Well if your answer is yes, then picture a young adult contemporary novel about two sisters who sign up for a show very similar to that with a twist. THAT’S THIS BOOK. And if your answer is no, then look the show up. *laughs* For Real was a twist on the ordinary contemporary romances that us readers are forced to read, and I loved it.

If you say that you’ve read something very much like what I described above, then you’re 100% wrong, because Cherry has written a relatable novel for readers that has never been written about before, ever. I’m actually hoping that you all will be prepped up and prepared for the awesomeness that is shooting your way, because it’ll hit you and you’ll sit there, shocked, wanting more handed over to you like a bag of popcorn. Though seriously, this book is a munchie, light, fluffy but beautiful.

“But at this moment, with the candlelight dancing on my face and my fingers twined with Will’s, I feel like I could belong anywhere.” (Hardcover, page 216)

Even without having to check back to the summary of the book and opening the cracked spine of the hardcover copy which I borrowed from the library, I can easily recall what this book had in store for readers. It all began with Claire’s older sister, Miranda’s, boyfriend, cheating on Miranda right when she was supposed to move in with him. It basically ruins her life, when you think about it, and when Claire tries to think of ways to perform revenge to help her big sis out, she thinks of auditioning for a show that’ll bring them to different places in the world, where Miranda’s ex will also be playing. When all goes well, the girls discover that there’s a terrifying twist that’ll break their team apart, and all will go to chaos when Claire has the chance to fall in love.

I’m such a sore loser when I read book. To be honest, I just figured that now after reading this book because I probably let the most predictable twist fly by without thinking about it. And when the end came, I realized that I never saw it coming because I was too lovestruck with the story and adored it too much to even be thinking about what may be coming. I had the feeling that Claire would win the show, and then I let some clues slip by me and I ended up embarrassing myself with this review. Haha. I won’t spoil anything, but those of you who have read this book must be sure to let me know if they saw the ending coming and what Claire discovered afterwards. *smiles*

I bet that anyone is able to bring this pretty read with them anywhere and they’ll be able to fall in love with it, whether you’re on the beach or stuck at home in the middle of a hell-like blizzard. It all works, my friends! Luckily in my situation, I was stuck at home, reading in my backyard on a comfy lounger. From page one, I was sucked into the girly world of Alison Cherry’s writing, and I never looked back. Is it that easy to fall in love with a book, you ask? And my answer for you this time is: YES. Especially with this wonderful lady’s writing. I can’t wait to read something else by her, my heart desires it.

Can we first talk about the gorgeous cover? I feel that it just screams out in its high-pitched girly voice: SUMMER. It has bits and pieces of other covers that I love, like Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson’s, but it’s gorgeous. It also screams out: SISTERHOOD. Did I mention that Miranda and Claire were the cutest sisters ever? But I did have issues with Miranda, I must say. (Though that didn’t effect my rating of this book, at all, so that’s okay.) And then, family and love were both a huge factor incorporated, and I must say that I developed a serious case of wanderlust. I HAD TO GO TO THE BOOKISH DOCTORS. *laughs*

From beginning to end (as you can most definitely tell), I was in love and so addicted with all of the events. There was never a shortage of something or details in plot and nothing ever dragged. I must say that the book was a perfect length and granted me all of the happiness that the sun does. *hates the cheesy phrases that come to mind* What can I say? It was fast-paced and I loved the premise. That’s what I usually look for when it comes to a good writer’s prose. And the characters? Forget about that rhetorical question and move straight to them without giving an one-word opinion.

Claire really resembled me. Okay, I’m quiet but not too quiet as she was at times, but her independence and intelligence is what really shone in her character. I loved her personality and how she took the game show truly seriously and that it wasn’t a joke. She did it all for her sister, after all. Sisterhood actually really does count in a ton of situations. But sadly, Miranda probably was one of the worst sisters for her. THIS GIRL RAGED CONSTANTLY AND LOVED TO BRAG ABOUT HERSELF WHEN CLAIRE DID THINGS TOO. I wanted to punch her a million times, and hopefully her personality wasn’t an accident and Cherry actually made her like that on purpose. If she was the opposite and it wasn’t made to be, then I’ll be punching the book like a punching bag. Whoops.

And then we move onto the romance, which was an essential factor for this kind of novel. I mean, it totally was adorable! I won’t spoil who Claire’s love interest may be, but you’ll possibly figure this out from peering at the quote above, just saying. THEY WERE ADORABLE AND WERE ON A WORLDWIDE ADVENTURE TOGETHER WHICH MADE EVERYTHING A HUNDRED TIMES CUTER… and then that happened which also shattered my heart since I realized that authors can make everything so depressing and ruin the magic that a book is able to hold At least that part wasn’t predictable… or maybe it was, again, for some of you. I was just acting like the person who feels like it’s okay to focus on the happiness and positive things and forget about what could happen eventually. *cries for the fortieth time*

When it comes to the end and I look back at this all, I realize that this was first pictured as such a simple, easy read, when it actually wasn’t. There were so many things that made the whole book fabulous and interesting, complex really. A contemporary slash game show book? What is this beauty, you may ask? Well then, you’ll have to actually think about it for real, my friends. A book like this is something that you’ll have to read if you wish upon a star or wish for it because of a genie. Good luck with finding something exactly the same, BUT YOU HAVE TO GO FOR THIS FIRST.

4 stars, if only that bitch sister Miranda wouldn't have been in it. It would have gotten a 5 stars then, but now, sorry I was just frustrated a lot of times because of miss Uberbitch Miranda, who acted like she was soooooo effing prissy and wonderful and special and oh her sister sucked so much, bohohohoho *rolls eyes*. Oh and the fact that after everything that happened, they magically bond together and booohoohoo everything is magically fine. Fuck that.

I was truly looking forward to this book. Roadtrips? Revenge? Bonding? Reality Shows? Yes, yes and more yes please! Sadly it didn't turn out to be that good. :(

The roadtrip never really happened. Not in the way I was expecting (especially considering the cover had a car on it) and the bonding? What bonding? The only thing I saw was bitching and a big sister who still thinks she is better than her sister and that her sister is a baby. More on that later in the review.

The reality show aspect was done quite well and I loved it! I also loved the little twist and the reactions of everyone participating. Dating + racing over the world + reality shows = wonderfulness. I really enjoyed that aspect and how the characters changed or showed their true colours. The whole racing over the world was awesome. I loved the things they had to do, loved seeing the world through our main characters eyes. Loved seeing her run, try to the puzzles and all the challenges they had to do. I just wished the challenges were a bit more romancy/steamy. Now they were pretty much boring. Only a few challenges were a bit steamy and the rest was just normal stuff. When I heard steamy, I thought things like having to feed your partner by mouth or massage your partner or other things, but instead we have them searching for foods, we have them finding things on/in things.

I loved our main character and her (useless) trivia of all things related to Reality Shows. I also liked how hard she tried to be better, tried hard to kick-ass, tried hard to not crack when her sister was evil again. How she broke down, but got back together. I am sure she has her faults, but she does her best to show the world she can handle them now, that she is a big girl who has guts and a good head on her shoulders.

Oh and I hated Will. I already suspected it was what was revealed at the ending, but I still felt sad that it was really true. :( Bad Will!

The revenge part was sadly a bit of a disappointment. Maybe because the 2 sisters can't be together and have to fight to win with other partners. Maybe also because I just didn't care about the big sister who lost her boyfriend any more. Maybe also because the whole revenge plot became kind of a third wheel. With first wheel our main character and how she wants to proof herself to the world (and especially her sister), and then second wheel with Will and what goes on with him.

And like I said at first, a big reason why I didn't like the book is because of Miranda. I am sure if she wasn't so stuck-up, wasn't so downright intended on mentally kicking and stabbing her sister with all kinds of things, if she wasn't all that and more I would have liked the book more. Now it just destroyed it. And again, I hate it when books just magically do things and poof, everything is fixed and they are best sisters once again! No, that is not how it works. If you break someone mentally like this, you don't just get magically together again.

All in all, I am not sure if I would recommend this book. On the one hand, it is a good and fun book about reality shows, but on the other hand, it has a character in it that is pretty much evil and also the whole roadtrip is a lie part.

Man, this book was fun.

Everything about the premise of this book appealed to me. Sisters. Revenge. Reality TV. International travel. Romantic shenanigans. It sounded like exactly the sort of breezy, light read that would leave me with happy butterflies in my tummy and a goofy smile on my face. The kind of book that’s cozy like a pair of fuzzy slippers and a glass of lemonade. And it delivered in every way.

Miranda and Claire are not a saccharine-sweet pair of sisters — think less Meg and Beth, more Jo and Amy. They’re different in their interests, looks, personalities, insecurities. They’re the way I think lots of siblings are — two people who may not have ever chosen to spend much time interacting with each other if they hadn’t been raised under the same roof. It’s not that they’re incompatible; more that they’re not inherently complementary. But incongruities aside, they share a special bond, and I felt FOR REAL did a fantastic job exploring that dichotomy — sisters who love each other and are fiercely loyal to each other, despite how little they have in common.

I loved – loved – how their relationship was the driving force of the story. Miranda’s revenge on her sleazy ex-boyfriend, Claire’s awkward attempts to woo her charming crush, and the array of bizarre challenges they were forced to complete as contestants on Around the World were highly entertaining, but all the big emotional punches hinged on what was happening between the two sisters, as did most of the big shifts in motivation and stakes. It’s no big surprise that my favorite scene in the book — and one that may have provoked a few tears — was a quiet moment between the two sisters in the midst of all the crazy set pieces swirling around them. I loved the balance between the absurdity of what the characters were forced to do and the groundedness of the relationships. A book about competing on a ridiculous reality show needs to really drive home the authenticity in its characters and emotion, and I thought FOR REAL did a masterful job of that.

That said, the Around the World premise (and its unexpected and wholly inconvenient twist) was such wacky fun. Everything from the premise of the show, to the insane challenges, to the over-the-top contestants, to the polished host, to the zany twists was simultaneously outlandish and totally plausible in the current landscape of reality television. Following the characters through each challenge was as compulsively readable as actual reality TV is watchable. Plus I loved the snippets of different countries and cultures as the characters raced from one exotic location to another, even as the characters were frustrated that they didn’t really get to experience the different cultures because they were too busy smashing pomegranates and coating each other in pudding (yes, really).

As for the romance, all I’ll say is that FOR REAL is chock-full of the kind of witty banter and squishy moments and stolen glances that make for the best kind of romantic comedy — but that it never forgets its reality show premise, or that the primary focus of the book is the two sisters. So don’t expect conventional romance tropes to come into play here — in FOR REAL, the boys are the side show, never the main attraction.

All in all, if you’re a fan of great sister stories, or reality TV, or travel — or you’re just looking for a fun, quick, un-put-down-able read that makes you chuckle and groan and roll your eyes, all while tugging at your heartstrings and making you grin like a fool — then FOR REAL is the book for you.

GIRL POWER all the way!

For Real is an emotional but quite funny read about two sisters who couldn't be more different if they tried. Miranda is confident and outgoing, someone who's always at ease. She's always felt like she had to protect her younger sister, Claire who was shy and incredibly awkward. Now Claire isn't the same person, she's still not a party animal but she has some close friends and a quiet confidence in her. However, Miranda can't see this, she's been away a lot more than at home and to her Claire the same girl, who needs to be taken care of all the time. When they sign up for Around the World Claire doesn't only want to rebond with her sister and sabotage Samir but she plans on showing Miranda the person who she's become. Now it's only up to Miranda to see and accept Claire for who she is now.

I love books about brothers/sisters, I'm not sure I'd actually want one but it's nice to read from a character's POV who do have one. However, sometimes these relationships are awfully portrayed. In most sibling relationship book I've read the relationship is either perfect or terrible, I was so glad when finally found a book that shows us a much realer relationship. There was a lot of misunderstanding from Miranda's part, and a lot of frustration from Claire's but one thing was sure: they loved each other to the moon and back. The most important, and best part of the novel was the sister bond between Miranda and Claire. It was so awesome to see as they learnt how to support and love each other without it becoming overwhelming, and by the end they completely understood one another.

I don't think I've ever read a book about a reality tv show but I've always wanted to. It's great to see everyday things from a view we normally can't. I loved how Alison Cherry made us see the fakeness of reality tv, while still made sure that we saw how the producers and the participants of the show were normal people. I liked the challenges, they were all funny and creative, I wonder if these traditions are actually true or not. Might look into it now.

The romance was a bit predictable but at least not the usual contemporary unconditional love. Do not open the spoiler tab if you haven't read the novel yet because it contains a major one.

MAJOR SPOILER

Overall, For Real is a perfect beach read that will surely pick up your mood, recommended for people after a guy screwed them over. ;)

My Review!
Who doesn't love a good story about revenge and making an ex pay? I know I do! I love the idea of exacting justice on someone who doesn't deserve kindness or respect or to be let off with no consequences. For Real starts off with a ridiculous ploy between two sisters who want to ruin an ex-boyfriend's life and turns into a story about the bonds of siblings and growing into your own person.

I'm a sucker for books with great sibling relationships, and I was so happy with the way the author developed Miranda's and Claire's. They fight; they tease each other mercilessly. But they got each other's backs through anything, even when they're mad. They went into this race thinking they'd be together the whole time and that they'd have no problem sabotaging Miranda's ex. But with the twist on the show, they're separated and have to compete against each other. And that is where the relationship becomes a lot of ups and downs.

Claire is awkward, quiet, and a shadow. Miranda is confident, graceful, and the center of attention. Polar opposites and separated by many years, these two have a lot of differences that they want the other to see. Claire wants Miranda to look at her as more than a little kid, someone who can take care of herself and who doesn't need her big sister to save her. Miranda feels so alone and is dealing with a lot of hurt and just wants Claire to be there for her no matter what. And she is, though she also wants Miranda to see her and to recognize that she doesn't need her to fight the battles for her. They were both dealing with different things, and that made them clash in such a tension-filled race.

I'm a little sad this was only told in Claire's voice, though I understand why it was. And honestly I identified with her so much more than her sister. Claire is shy and used to hide behind Miranda all the time. It's why her sister doesn't think she can take of herself. Claire learned that she can, but that she also needed her sister. There was no one else she would have gone on a reality show with, and no one else who knows her better. Not even the guy she starts to develop a crush on.

This book, while appearing to be a romance, does not go in the direction one would expect. And I found that I loved that! It was all about the girls and their relationship with each other and about Claire finding her voice and her confidence while navigating a race filled with fights, secrets, and tension. For Real was just so much fun!
