If you’re familiar with The Hoodwitch, you will probably enjoy this book. It’s a collection that’s part memoir, part spell book, and visual art. The hard copy of the book is preferred so you can enjoy the visual layers and touch the pages.

The Hoodwitch brings an important perspective in the modern witch community.

Taken from an article online, the book is broken down into three parts:

*Blood: uncovers Bri’s roots, with guides on setting boundaries, protection, and honoring the dead.
*Sex: reveals the art of love magic and celebrates the goddess, lust, and femininity, with spells for seduction and reclaiming your power.
*Magic: offers meaningful daily rituals, including those for self-love, peace, beauty, and prosperity.

Personally, I found all of the sections had interesting ideas and practices.

I was previously largely unfamiliar with Hoodoo/conjure and Brujaria folk traditions, which is why I wanted to read this. It’s perhaps a beginners introduction to these ideas, but was great for someone like me. Some may find these practices superstitious or creepy, but I thought they represented a powerful way to set boundaries, and protect yourself.

“Hoodoo, not to be confused with voodoo, is an African American folk tradition—not a religion but a generational spiritual practice that was formed from the blood, sweat, and tears of the African diaspora and the enslaved African people brought to the Americas through the transatlantic slave trade.”

Sex is perhaps my favorite section simply because it seems taboo even today in the witch community, to speak openly about sex magic, and sex positivity is a healing goal worth striving for no matter your spiritual background.

“Witches paved the way for sexual liberation and sexual freedom, and we use sex to perform our most powerful rituals and rites, from initiatory rites to simple seductions for power and fun. We have charged and seduced our way through the centuries, rejecting puritanical beliefs and practices.”

I also appreciate the emphasis on glamour and beauty, something that can be co-opted as vanity in today’s image obsessed society, but is nonetheless a powerful form of psychological magic.

“Glamour is one of the oldest and most powerful forms of magic to me. It is an illusory spell, an undefinable quality that lures and attracts people into your realm without their understanding why. This is an art form: knowing yourself, learning how to play up certain qualities, and embodying them fiercely and unapologetically.”

I wish the book was slightly longer and went into some of the ideas in more detail, but loved the emphasis on visual art.

It’s a great introduction to the Hoodoo and Bruja traditions for fellow beginners. You may find yourself cringing at some of the spells (panty water anyone?), but don’t let that stop you from appreciating the cultural background of these traditions.

I don’t want to bash the author or this book.. but this was.. bad. It’s as if “we are the daughters of the witches you couldn’t burn” was a book. It is visually stunning I will give it that. The spell sections were my favorite, this book is more of a mix between an autobiography and bits and pieces of spells and info. Overall not for me.

"Blood Sex Magic" is more of a Memoir of the author Bri Luna, aka The Hoodwitch, with some great life advice. Those who are into the paranormal, self healing, or witchcraft will find some helpful spells and mediation rituals. It's nothing extreme or dangerous so don't expect hexes or anything like that. It's much more of protection and self healing. The book is also a work of art as there's beautiful photography pictures and drawings. If you follow The Hoodwitch on social media then you will enjoy this book. I do wish the book was longer but at the same time she wrote and told everything that needed to be shared without over sharing too much of her personal life.

A bold collection of magical wisdom from the realest bruja in contemporary mysticism.

Each of the three short sections are crafted with care and attention--as well as obviously visually stunning in every way possible. Bri isn't afraid to say the things that often go unsaid (or just ignored) in other texts on witchcraft.

As a whole this book is both a warning and an incantation to help guide us and acknowledge our purest inner strength. At times this reads like an elder holding your hand while muttering ancient protection spells from the evil eye. But this also feels like a cool, older sister talking to you late at night about her toxic relationships and sex.

And no, this isn't like other "how to" or "witchcraft 101" tombs. Bri has infused her life and legacy in these pages, but only allowing us just a glimpse. She gives us room to reflect on our selves and ancestors. She offers just enough, never too much--and that's refreshing af.

It's a small but mighty addition to the growing nonfiction witchcraft genre from BIPOC practitioners that includes Brujas: The Magic and Power of Witches of Color and The Altar Within: A Radical Devotional Guide to Liberate the Divine Self.

3.5/5 ⭐️

The visuals in this book are absolutely stunning! Unfortunately, the content felt very ephemeral. There were a lot of interesting ideas and stories, but we only just barely touched on them before it moved on to the next topic. The best parts were the memoir sections. If you’re looking for a spellbook or some sort of unifying spiritual message, you’re going to be disappointed. But if you’re looking for inspiration on your own personal spiritual practice, the visuals alone are worth the money!

As a Brazilian, I had a really good time reading it since I was amazed by the fact that a lot of our folk magic is also shared by people on another hemisphere. This is a result of course of our shared African ancestry, and I love it. I'd already seen people working with the Orishas, for example, which is something really common around here. But the idea of the "white bath", taking care of your Ori/spiritual crown, that was something new in an American Magic book. Also, preparing some tea/coffee with your underwear. lol

The chapter about the manicures, at first I was kinda like "hmmm, not relatable", since I'm a man, but it actually ended up being one of my favorites and I loved Bri's perspective on how magical these things can be. Recently rediscovering all the possibilities of Magic, how flexible our practices can be, this book was really enjoyable to read. I felt as if I was attending a cozy weekend witch meeting, where everyone would just share their bits and nourish one another. =)

Hope Bri gives us some more!

For fans of The HoodWitch, this book is an absolute must read. I received a copy of the internet's favorite witchy baddie's first book for Galentine's Day and it could not have been more perfect. Follower's of Bri Luna's social media accounts will recognize her trademark photography and style all throughout the book. She truly has given readers something of herself in this volume and the beauty of that shows on every page. Broken into three sections - Blood, which explores the author's familial and generational connection to folk beliefs and witchcraft as well as spells for ancestral magic; Sex, which includes not only love spells (both for self and romantic partnerships) but also the author's guiding wisdom and hard-earned lessons; and Magic, perhaps the most complex section layered with occult history and the unique spellcraft of finding the enchanting in the mundane.

An absolute delight and a beautiful book to brighten any shelf of similar tomes.

Was interesting, but hard to wrap my head around completely. I always hope for structure with magic educational tools and this book certainly had magical recipes with clear directions and ingredients. I wasn’t taken with any of the magical rituals described personally and one of my bigger takeaways was that magic is not a one size fits all and there’s certainly room for personal choices that make sense to the individual. Overall, interesting read, but not interested in the practice presented in this book on a personal level. Gave me a lot to think about and I appreciated all the detailed explanations included with each topic.

total letdown. blood sex magic is all bark, no bite — just a lot of flashy pictures and trendy phrases with zero depth. felt more like she was trying to convince herself she’s a witch than actually teaching anything real. there’s no substance, just vague spells that sound cool but don’t really do anything. it reads like something thrown together for instagram likes, not a serious book on magic. more style than substance. disappointed that it’s just another influencer cashing in on the witch trend instead of offering anything meaningful.

"The more you stand in your power, the more people start realize that they can’t play with you."

If you are familiar with The Hoodwitch this is a great read. Even if you are not, I think this is an important read for any spiritual person or practicing witch. Self love and exploration are so important, and I loved that this book valued and explored that fact in a, for lack of a better term, magical way. Visually this book is stunning too! I really loved all the art throughout the book.

Visually stunning, with a lot of beautiful anecdotal stories about ancestry and what it means to reconnect with one's power- I loved that it felt like talking with a friend. By that, I mean both in a casual digestible way and like a deep conversation about harnessing your own strength. I wished the author would have elaborated more in certain areas just because I enjoyed her voice so much as a teacher, but I enjoyed it and learned a lot regardless.

It’s a biography, marketing of products she sells on her website, and some spell work. If you’re a fan of the Hoodwitch, it’s a lovely book to support someone who has given so much to baby witches and normalized witchcraft to the masses. But it isn’t a book that delves deep into the mysteries. It has some spells that everyday witches can perform but I would recommend picking this one up along with others if you’re seeking to have a deeper understanding of the craft.

This book is not only aesthetically pleasing but it has so much knowledge and rituals. It’s beautiful. I’ve been following the Hoodwitch page on Instagram for years and this book really lets dive into more of who Bri Luna is. Also being black and feeling like an outsider as a teenager … I wish this book was around . Love love

Bri Luna's perspective on magic and brujas and how it all fits in the modern world is a welcome addition to my study of witchy things. It should be included in anyone's work to discover their inner witch.

This was a coffee table book for my place, hence why it took me so long to get through it.

The material inside is fun, raw, and informative.

I enjoyed hearing from a biracial woman who practices both sides of her cultures.
