Offences, Outrages and Other Observations: the best of Bob Jones' New Zealand Herald columns. Sir Robert Jones' weekly newspaper columns are always guaranteed to amuse and outrage in equal measure. This collection brings together the best of them from the past few years, now collated thematically to create a new and often hilarious view of the world according to Sir Bob.
A while back I was asked about writers I could enjoy even if I didn't agree with them - I didn't answer using this example but Bob Jones was always like that for me, I enjoyed some of the wit and occasional wisdom and there was a type of humour in the pieces he was meaning for outrage (he's print's version of a troll, surely) but this book of columns has taken me about two years to wade through; some weird sense of achievement I thought I might get from finishing. He's just a daft old fool now - rude and out of date and bordering on toxic. It's almost comic how embarrassing some of his legit thoughts are. Almost...
I think I’ve said before about how very much I love essays. Opinions, observations, and sometimes just a complete rant, the essays in ‘No Punches Pulled’ are from Sir Bob Jones’s column in the NZ Herald. Hilarious, topical, and sometimes a little offensive, these essays are a great introduction to critical thinking as well as being great conversation starters. Topics covered in “No Punches” include politics, culture, money and manners - but some of Jones's sharper barbs are aimed at women – gross generalisations about our size, our driving skills(or lackthereof), and also (surprisingly, but accurately) for how we judge each other. You may think that some of his observations are mysogynistic and offensive but I couldn’t possibly comment – except to say that all things considered, this collection is well-crafted, thought provoking and a really great read.
