Jack Hayes believes he has the perfect life. A loving wife and a secluded cabin an hour's drive from Red Bluff, California. The setting is perfect for a loving couple, but all is not as perfect as he believes. His wife is prone to disappearing all the time without notice or cause and it's not until one stormy July night that she delivers the truth about the last ten years of his life- a realisation he isn't going to be prepared for.
Well written. Got it for free on Kindle Unlimited. It was worth it. It's a very melancholy story, but I think it was well done. Short stories are hard to build a lot of character in, but I think this one did well enough with that. We understand the MC and his plight by the end of the story. There was only one part that left me a little confused as to how he didn't land himself in jail for something he did years before - that was never explained at all. I guess it was just there to show how screwed up the MC is? I don't know. Little confusing but.... Overall, interesting read. Picked it up randomly to fulfill a reading challenge spot. It's not 'the most memorable book ever', but it was well written and I'd probably pick up some of the author's other stories b/c I think he's got a good writing style. Considering this had no reviews on Amazon when I picked it up that is saying something. (I've come across a few where I started to understand why there were no ratings, b/c they were plain old awful). This one at least has good writing even if the story line doesn't grab you. Maybe the string of terrible short stories I've read made this seem better written then it is, I don't know. But I think there is potential.
