I’ve been a huge fan of the Six Pack Ranch/Coleman Family/Thompson & Son’s series by author Vivian Arend since its inception. I’ve always appreciated the complexity of the stories, the huge family ties, and of course the absolute sexiness that comes with her writing. While I enjoyed Rocky Mountain Romance, for me it didn’t have the same charm and I just didn’t feel that since of “rightness” with this couple. Despite that, spending time with a lot of the Coleman clan was a huge bonus in this book.
Steve Coleman, one of the Moonshine clan, and Melody Langley had a casual relationship that ended a little over a year prior to the beginning of this book and it ended in spectacular fashion when in the middle of a bar with all of Steve’s friends and a lot of his family present, Melody dumped a pitcher of beer on his head right before she left town for a year to add some extra studies to her veterinarian degree. The beer incident and the loss of Melody was an eye opener for Steve and he’s made changes in his life over the past year. Now that Melody is back and resuming her position at the vet clinic where she worked, Steve has plans to win her back and show her how he’s changed.
I’m usually a huge fan of rekindled romance but to be honest sometimes you have to wonder if maybe there was a reason it didn’t work in the first place. I really felt like Steve went over and beyond trying to convince Melody he had changed and was a better man and the thing is I truly believed Steve changed and why she may have set those changes in motion it became clear as the book went on that there were other reasons why he wanted to change. More than that though, he liked the changes he made and they way they made him feel. However I really, really felt like this relationship was one sided; that Steve put way more into it than Melody did. Yes, I get that Melody was back and her position at the Vet clinic took on a huge role shortly thereafter, but I just didn’t feel she put in half as much effort at Steve. While it was obvious they enjoyed their sexy times that “heat” between them than you normally feel with Ms. Arend’s characters just wasn’t present. Again this could be because they’d known each other and dated for two years so there was a familiarity already there that made them more comfortable than exciting.
There were obviously some points being made in this book about women being accepted into the ranching community as equals, organic farming and ranching, and new and improved ways of doing things; all of which are fine because our world is changing and sometimes those “good old boy” communities have a hard time with change but at times I felt like this weighed the book down. I do love the way Melody stood up for herself, did everything she could and more to prove herself and her abilities, and the way she refused to back down. I liked Melody’s character; I’m just not sure I liked her relationship with Steve.
What I have always loved about this series is the family aspect and we got to see many of the Coleman clan in this book which is always a highlight for me especially because Gabe had quite a few memorable moments. We checked in on many of the past couples and it is always wonderful to how they are progressing and how their family is changing. We also got a few hints as to what might be coming down the line in future books which has me intrigued. No doubt about it, the family scenes really were the highlight for me in this book.
As a lover of this series and this author’s work this is a review that was hard for me to write because for once I didn’t absolutely love this book. Personally, I hope we see more of Steve and Melody in a future book; I’d like to see Melody catering a little bit more to Steve rather than Steve doing all the work in their relationship. I enjoyed Rocky Mountain Romance and as always I’m looking forward to the next book in the Six Pack Ranch/Coleman/Thompson & Sons saga because I’m hooked and I will always want to know what happens next!

Not So Vanilla
4.5 stars - Another great addition to the Coleman family series! I really like the characters, the relationship building, and general good times. The fact that these two really have the thermostat tapping out is just a great side effect.
This is a sweet and fun second chance for Stephen "Steve" Coleman with the one he let get away, Melody Langley. I love how she drops a challenge, and Steve literally and figuratively rises to the occasion! It's as fun as it is hot. OK, fine, it's a LOT HOTTER! 🔥🎉
I love the friendly ribbing and general comradery between them and their friends and Steve's very loud, very nosy family, extended and immediate. It leads to plenty of laughs and good times.
There's also another not-so-great encounter with Ben Coleman. In addition to that, Melody has to contend with a cantankerous co-worker who's feeling a bit butt-hurt and some potentially sexist ranchers who don't want to work with her. I like how she stands up for herself. It gets even more interesting when Steve shows his support for her.
I read along as I listened to the audio book - twice - because another book kind of wrecked me, and a re-read/listen was necessary. The narrator is Tatiana Sokolov. I continue to like her.

Although I'm not usually a fan of second chance romances, this one was a surprise. I thought the pacing was good and even though it was a little predictable at times, overall extremely entertaining. Definitely need to read the previous books in the series.

My second of this series, which I am reading out of order, and I enjoyed this one much more than the first. Little drama, I did get frustrated with Melody at one point, but overall I liked her. I was hell fire pissed at the way some of the ranchers/farmers/assholes of the country were treating her, but I liked her and Steve together. He is a sweetie. As with the other, there are lots of things happening with other characters on the side and many interactions with the family members, which I like.

My Review:
This may be #7 in the series, but it's the first book I've read from it. While that certainly works because the book is great as a stand-alone, I have to admit I think I've fallen in love with the Coleman clan and will probably go back and read some of the others because I enjoyed the characters and the glimpses into their stories were intriguing.
But this book was about Melody and Steve. They broke up (i.e. Melody dumped him with a pitcher of beer over his head) ten months ago. Since then, Steve has come to the realization of what a jerk he was...not just with her, but in life. He's made a total life transformation in his life in the past 10 months and now that she's back he wants to show her that he deserves her this go around.
Melody's aspect of the story was much less romance-centric. While she's a bit leery of Steve's plan and ability to go through with being a good guy, she's concentrating on her new life as a big animal vet. Something that some of the area ranchers are taking issue with. Normally I'm all about the romance aspect of the story line, but in this book, I was all about this side of her life and how it was all going to work out for her. She's a tough gal working in a male dominated world, but I loved her attitude about it all. It's frustrating at times, but she's so professional. The only people that truly see her lose her cool are Steve and her girlfriends...even though she's dealing with some truly horrid, bigoted jerks. She's awesome!
I did enjoy watching the romance develop too. And although it is very hot and heavy, I really liked the way that the author emphasized the other aspects of their relationship besides the sex that created intimacy between them. They are both dealing with a lot...a lot of work, a lost of stress, a lot of expectations...but at the end of the day they come together and support each other...sometimes with a meal, sometimes with a massage, and yes, sometimes with sex. But this book was about the WHOLE relationship, not just the smexy times and I loved that. THAT maturity is the difference between where Melody and Steve were a year ago vs. where they are in the book. It was fun to see the difference.
Overall I enjoyed the book and definitely LOVED the veterinarian aspect as well as the romance. It was a good, entertaining, and smexy romance.

I don't think I've read a book by Vivian Arend yet that I didn't enjoy. This one was full length and there were some scenes that were hot hot hot! I loved that this is a second chance romance but it isn't based on "I DID SOMETHING UNFORGIVABLE BUT YOU'LL FORGIVE ME AFTER 3 WEEKS" This was "We dated and I was lazy and insensitive and didn't care as much as I should have, but now I've decided to grow up and be attentive". I loved Steve and his dedication to Melody and making things work between them. As someone in a polyamorous relationship, I do appreciate that the triad relationship mentioned from an earlier relationship is treated as normal and healthy.

It happened again - I keep forgetting these aren't real people in the real world, that is how much I love these stories and characters. I LOVE the Coleman's, even the messed up ones, they are an amazing bunch!!
We get our first non-six pack or Angel here, though we did have lovely Anna, but she was tied into a Thompson book. It makes sense she became a mountie and can handle a bad-boy biker after having three brothers. Plus mom Kate rocks, I think I liked her best of all!!
But the story here, even with all the check-ins, is about Steve Coleman. Laid back and musical, and eldest son of Randy and the above-mentioned Kate. This branch of the Coleman's aren't as intense as the Six-Packers, nor have the underlying issues the plague the Angels, they are just there, taking life as it comes to them
Steve was the head of just going along, until he lost Melody last year. He didn't even realize he had done wrong, or wanted more, until she was gone. She is back, and while the sparks fly, for both of them, that was all they had before. Both want more, but both didn't try harder last time.
This isn't really a second chance, because those are depressing, but more of an evolution of the relationship. They discover each other, they actually listen and learn about each other, and yes, they completely burn up the sheets together. It is more than that, and both take blame and responsibility for what has happened and what is going on now
There was a maturity to the relationship, and that was the best part. Why do I feel like these are real people living in the real world? Because they are fully three-dimensional and honest in the actions and reactions. It is a story that takes you away and has romance, but it is based in the real world, and that is what I truly love about this series!!

Why I read it: Someone linked to the audiobook on Twitter and I one-clicked that sucker straight away.
What worked for me (and what didn’t): I’ve been enjoying this series mostly on audio – Rocky Mountain Freedom isn’t out yet so I read that one – and I was happy when I saw there was a new book out. Not only that, it’s a bit longer at more than eight hours of listening. Steve Coleman hasn’t featured strongly in the series previously. He was playing guitar and singing with the band at Trader’s Pub a while back when a woman dumped a pitcher of beer on his head but other than that, he was mostly unknown to me. (There’s a family tree on the author’s website which is helpful. Go here.)
It turns out that Melody Langley dumped the pitcher of beer on Steve’s head because he was unreliable and irresponsible. But by the time the book begins, Steve’s not like that anymore. I heard a little about how Steve was laid back before and tended to take a que sera sera approach to things but there wasn’t a lot of evidence for it in the book proper. I suppose that may have been because to show him in that light may have made it difficult for me to like him. That said, I did feel like Steve was the supplicant for much of the book and from time to time, I felt a bit sorry for him. That’s complicated by the fact that Melody does agree that they were more fuck buddies than boyfriend/girlfriend and if that’s the case, his lazy attitude seemed to fit with what their relationship really was, rather than actually be a problem. It’s also true that I’m a hero-centric reader so maybe that had something to do with my feelings about Steve.

When I started this book I really had no high expectations because the love rekindled story never really appeals to me. But I am a fan of Ms Arend and this series I absolutely love.
The book starts off pretty slowly or atleast that is what I originally thought but in hindsight I appreciated the character building particularly Melody POV. She's a strong Heroine who knows what she wants and makes it absolutely clear from the offset. A very admirable trait for me personally was the focus on her career too not because it was a must-do job but one she very passionate about.
These days authors tend to lean into writing heroines that "fall" into their guys and never crawl out of that hole and shine as individuals. So a big-ups to the author for that!
The real romance only gets started at about 40% into the book and by starts I mean it STARTS. Boy did it get Steamy!
Steve was an annoying Hero in the beginning because he seemed like a big lug of nothing between the ears but the man does display his smarts and can be considerably charming when it comes to the pursuit of his lady-love and that mouth.... yeah that mouth sold it....
All in all a great romance story.... And a solid 4 STARS!!

Son of a gun! Starting with book 7 in this series MIGHT have been a teeny, tiny mistake. Now I'm going to have to go back and read all the books that came before because OMG! SUCH A FUN GROUP!
(For the record, I had no issues with starting the series this late in the game other than wanting to meet all the couples who came before. Something I can totally go back and do. YAY!)
Steve and Melody were so darn CUTE (and hot. For serious.). Yeah, Steve screwed up when they were together last, but he totally owned his jackassishness. Not only that, he's made an effort to change his lackadaisical ways when it comes to Melody. And his life in general. I like a man who does what he needs to do to get his special lady back.
I liked how both Steve and Melody were willing to listen to advice from others. Sometimes it took a while for that advice to sink in, but they both took what they were told to heart.
Highly enjoyable with smokin' sex scenes. The Coleman family was intriguing (ALL of them) and the dynamic in the family made me grin. *thumbs up*

Cant believe this is already the 7th book in this phenomenal series. This is by far one of my fave "cowboy series" out there.
This is the story of Melody and Steve. They dated for 2 years, before Melody had enough and left him. She then took off for a year for vet school and now she is back in town to take on a job at the local vet clinic.
When Melody left him, Steve realised that he had made the biggest mistake of his life taking her for granted for so long. Now that she is back, and he has "grown" up he is going to do everything in his power to win the love of his life back.
This is a great story of second chance love and I enjoyed every single minute of it. Also nice to catch up with the other Coleman's at the same time.
Looking forward to the next book as there are still some single Coleman's out there.....

Steve Coleman is a very lazy guy. He had the perfect girl, and he threw the relationship away just because he was too lazy to put anything into it.
Melody Langley is the ex-girlfriend of Steve and is going places. She just returned from a year long course in Veterinary medicine. She has returned to start a new life.
Steve has to prove that he has changed before Melody wants anything to do with him, including sex. She wants more, and Steve needs to give her more, or be lost to her forever.
This book has many good points, the plot is great, the book is well written.
I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars and may read more by this author.

Another great book by Ms. Arend. They had been together for two years, he was stupid, she moved away and now she's back. I loved how Melody and Steve worked their way to I love you. There was no instalove even with their history. Loved, loved, loved seeing all the Coleman and Thompson's. Can't wait to find out more about Lee and his mystery woman. And one of these days I will get around to reading Freedom and find all about Travis, Cassidy and Ashley.

Steve Moonshine Coleman lacked ambition and was content to go along in life never bucking the status quo. It takes losing the love of his life in a very public and ultra embarrassing break up to kick his butt into high gear. (and what an awesome butt too) Melody Langley works hard and plays hard and is looking for a man that can keep up in all facets of her life. Watching Steve try to prove he is the only man for the job is both entertaining and heart warming. Gotta Love Second Chance romances, especially from life long loves.

If you want sex look no further
The sex scenes are good, but the story lacks depth. Steve was anguished at the thought of losing her? Really, cause I saw a little fear in one sentence. Torment him with images of the future he was in danger of losing. He missed her? Don't tell me show me that the man had a hole in his life that only she could fill. Would any girl have fit in with his family? Why did it have to be her. She's cool but show me how his happiness and future depend entirely upon getting this particular girl.

One of my favorite "family" series. Loved Steve and Melody's journey back to each other and I love how Ms. Arend builds conflict. She doesn't dump it all out there at one time and fill it full of angst.

Refreshing read, kind of drawn out but in a good way. I thought there'd be more drama about why they broke up. Maybe more chase behind them realizing they should be together though. In the end this was a good one to read.

I love me some great steamy scenes in my romance stories, but I can't believe I'm going to say this one has far too much. It got in the way of seeing the character growth and the romance build up.

A lovely second chance Romance between Steve and Melody.
Steve Coleman is one of the many cousins to the Coleman clan and a year ago his girlfriend at the time left him,which spurred him on to change is life.Now Melody was back in town working as one of the local Vetanarians,and he wanted nothing more than a second chance with her.
I liked the way Steve totally owned up to his mistakes of the past when he was with Melody,he neglected her back then and took responsibilty for this.
Melody wasn't sure how people would react to her being back in town and working with the animals,she had left hastily back then after pouring beer all over her boyfriend Steve.He had lost interest in their relationship it seemed and never paid her attention or listened to her,so she left and built on her career.
Melody is a strong independent woman but she had to get over alot of predjudices within the town being a female Vet who was promoted to handle the large animals.Some of the ranchers didn't like it and she had to deal with alot of horrible people with old school views...even from her colleague.
The chemistry between Melody and Steve was very much there,but now Steve had a lot to prove to her, that he had actually changed.
Melody wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt and give him this chance so gave him 3 months to prove that he wasn't the old Steve.But a new and improved Steve....and man was he different,he surprised Melody he was sexier,and more forward with his thinking and what he wanted.he lavished her with attention ,wooed her and totally sexed her up.Sweeping her up in a whirlwind.
Steve had changed and everyone around him knew it,but he hated the way that some of the town was treating her and he was afraid that his old self would appear trying to defend her,when Melody didn't want him to....will he mess up his second chance.?
This book seemed different to the other books because they were a couple straight away as soon as Melody got back in town.So the premise of the story is both of them trying to navigate a relationship while they both have busy jobs and a gossipy town.Its about them working on their relationship and owning up to mistakes ,recognising eachothers wants and needs,and listening to one another.
Rocky Mountain Romance is a super steamy story,it was sweet in some parts and I think I fell more in love with the Coleman family and this series.I am really looking forward to the next book,I am loving Vivian Arend's words and storytelling.

The description for this book vastly overplays the action in this book. It's a good straightforward story about a female veterinarian. Melody Langley is a vet who works at the local veterinary clinic. About ten months ago, just before she left town for some additional training, she breaks up with her boyfriend Steve by pouring a pitcher of beer over his head in the local bar. He was pretty much a waste of time - a minimal effort kind of guy. You don't find out what specifically caused her to break up with him for a while and I was worried it would be something stupid, and it was, but the kind of stupid thing he'd do back then.
When the story starts Melody returns to town and goes back to work at the clinic. The owner of the clinic (and her mentor) announces that he is going on vacation over the summer and that Melody is in charge of the large animal duties. Tom, the other vet who works there is furious and makes life as difficult as possible for Melody while the older vet is gone. I guess large animal duty is more prestigious than small animal duty. Some of the farmers are not happy having a woman work on their animals and they also make life difficult for Melody.
Steve took his breakup with Melody to heart and has spent the last ten months trying to be a better man. He talks Melody into giving him three months to prove he's changed.
I liked this book. I had no idea who the other characters were and there wasn't much explanation to go by, but it wasn't too big a problem once I figured out who Steve's brothers were. I gave up on the cousins and various other relatives. It would have probably helped if I had read the other books in the series.
Melody was a good character. She stood up for herself when it was appropriate and put her head down and got the job done when that was appropriate. There are some battles that are just not worth fighting. The only thing that was weird is that with so much of Steve's family littering the ground, there was no mention of Melody's. This was all Melody's story. Other than his mom going to take care of his aunt, nothing happens to Steve. He went through his changes before the story starts and basically spends the novel being a good guy, which works.

These are easy, sweet reads but not particularly special usually. There has been a few that I have not enjoyed for characters or plot but most are pretty nice. This one was good, a quick read. This was a second chance at romance. These two didn't have much more than benefits from their first relationship, so when Melody comes back to Rock Mountain, the new relationship is definitely different. Steve decides that he will fix what was wrong and has changed quite a bit since Melody left to do extra studies in vet medicine. After Steve pushes she decides to give it a go.
Both find that the new relationship is different and better, both are giving more effort. OK so that is the romance, nice, sweet and some nice sex. Then there is a side plot of the farmers either accepted or not accepting Melody as a large animal vet. Some are set against her, even the second doctor at the practice. Luckily the owner doctor knows she is good. So there was a little of Steve supporting her but mainly this was separate from the romance. There is a lot of showing up of former characters and future characters. The relationships that she has with the other women is great and does always involve relationship but mainly does. So, the side plots and vet plot was pretty good too and all and all her fighting for her spot in the clinic was great. Still overall it is pretty good, somewhere between 3 and 4.

#7 in the Six Pack Ranch western romance series
I liked this book a lot. It focused on the Moonshine Colemans, which is a bit different from the most recent books. We get to know Steve Coleman, ranch hand who had a relationship with Melody years ago and treated her poorly, mostly from neglect and preference to party rather than keep her happy. Now that he's matured, he really wants another chance, but Melody is leery. On top of these personal problems, Melody is dealing with her veterinarian work. She's a female in a male-dominated world, especially since she's been put in charge of farm/large animal calls. The old boy network is unhappy, and she has to work extra hard to get her job done, finding herself occasionally lacking self-esteem and constantly frustrated with events she has no control over. I found it very interesting to see some of the inside workings of a vet. What I liked best about this book was that it was more about an ongoing relationship rather than a new one. They had a familiarity with each other that felt comfortable, and their interactions were more about building their togetherness rather than feeling out something new. Great characters, with some revisiting with previous ones.
