There are many questions in the air about the Bible's teachings on the End Times. Dispensationalism is a form of biblical interpretation, a system that advertises itself as the only serious option for the study of prophecy. But, since its appearance in the mid-19th Century, it has correctly predicted nothing while fostering a sub-culture of wild speculation within evangelical Christianity. The litany of wrong predictions and laughable proposals that have plagued Dispensationalism from its outset would be comical if it didn't represent the deception of millions along the way.
When will the Rapture be? Who is the Antichrist? Will a new temple be built in Jerusalem? What is the "fig tree generation"? Who are Gog and Magog? Where is the Revived Roman Empire? You could add some others that you have heard or asked yourself.
In the attempt to answer these questions, leading Dispensational teachers have let fly with some truly embarrassing efforts.
Pastor Gordan Runyan has made his picks for the top five most embarrassing face-plants of Dispensational prophetic speculation. At some point, it must be recognized that these SMH types of proposals are not the result of isolated individuals proving that they have no understanding. Rather, this unending stream of snort-worthy guesses is a feature of the system. It's not that the Dispensational view leaves room for this foolishness. It invites and breeds it.
Runyan ends this article by providing a short but helpful bibliography, for those who are ready to begin exploring other options in biblical interpretation.
In 1970 Hal Lindsey wrote that the establishment of Israel in 1948 fulfilled the prophecy of the fig tree in Mat. 24:32. This meant that all the events in the premillennial timeline would be fulfilled in that generation. A generation was declared to be 40 years, which makes 1988 the end year and would include the rapture, rebuilding the temple, great tribulation, etc.
