The book was a pretty good walk through what you should be thinking about for VC. It does skew a bit toward college grads, but I thought the refresher was still useful if you are interested in the space.

The audio version of this book has some definite issues. There seems to have been a lot of voice over re-editing and they forgot to edit out a part where the narrator is speaking to the producer.

Definitely got a great perspective on how to directly jump into VC without startup, tech, & investing experience. #BreakIntoVC has been so key in helping me flex my new intensive knowledge of accounting/finance fundamentals, investing, and startup basics in front of the venture capitalists and angel investors I am meeting with! I highly recommend this book for other students as it served as a fantastic introduction to the VC/startup world.

#BreakIntoVC is a fantastic introduction into the world of venture capital and tech finance. Written not just for aspiring investors but also for entrepreneurs and startup founders, #BreakIntoVC explains in broad strokes basic accounting principles, financial modelling, the venture capital process and mindset, and (naturally) how to break into VC. While the quantitative sections are geared towards interviewing for venture capital positions and are thus not too detailed, Miles offers enough detail for readers to understand the underlying concepts and reasoning behind the models and equations while simultaneously pointing readers to more advanced materials for those so inclined.

Additionally, the last chapter in #BreakIntoVC is composed of interviews with students and entrepreneurs looking to break into the venture capital space (and many who have already done so). This compilation of advice from individuals from various backgrounds is worth a read for anyone interested in working in venture capital/growth equity.

If interested, the author also does an interview here

Might be useful for a 18 yr old who has no working experience at all. A lot of chapters are copied directly from textbook explaining the simplest finance terms, there are other chapters which are just checklists of podcasts/websites you could visit... the last third of the book are interviews of college kids which aren’t really beneficial, unless you have even less experience than them... overall this is more like a brochure than a book, contains no personal understandings of the industry from the author, which probably makes sense since the author himself is not experienced either...

Gave it 5 stars since I had my expectations straight: it's gonna be a VC guide 101 for students. It was very simple to understand, and definitely deliver huge values to students/beginners (though his introduction of the book might have exaggerated what the book can offer). Surprisingly, I found the quantitative parts to be most helpful (key metrics, valuation, etc.) Would recommend the author expanding on the parts covering how to research a company/industry and pitch them as they are too high-level. Overall though, given the author was an undergrad when he wrote this, it is quite impressive.

Perfect For Students and Professionals

A rare resource for those in and aspiring to work in Venture Capital. This is part text book and part inspirational introduction.

The author’s companion website is surprisingly unloved and would normally lose a star because the book’s content is quite high level (it is always good to go back to basics when studying); however it also includes a wealth of third party links and resources to go much deeper.

Great Advice

I've spent most of my career working for PE backed companies, and while this book focused on VC\growth capital, the principles are the same - as is the language. Anyone looking to engage with financial sponsors as an analyst, new banker, employee or banker will do well to read this book.

Meant mostly for student

The author wrote the book after college graduation so the content is mostly Targeted newbies, Specifically students.

Contains Contains information about financial statement analysis which could be useful for those who do not have any financial Bakeman. However yes you have done any prior experience in finance this section could be redundant.

It's fairly rare to find much information about breaking into Venture Capital as the industry is still fairly new. In fact, not many people around me know what Venture Capital is.

This book is great for anyone who's interested to work in VC. It succinctly taught all the basic fundamentals of the common analysis and interview questions asked by VCs in USA.

Valuable for an undergrad seeking a job in VC. Targeted market of course. For anyone else...it's a copy & paste definition overview. There were a few tidbits around valuation that I hadn't seen before. Overall a mediocre, quick read.

If you are thinking about getting a job in venture capital, or know nothing about the industry and want a basic idea, then this light read is a reasonable introduction. However, if you really want to know about how things work properly there are much better books out there.

Really good primer on breaking into Venture Capital. I learned a lot of fundamental ideas in this concise book. Not a very in-depth look at the art of VC, such as "The Business of Venture Capital," but a good start nonetheless.

Super accessible, very easy to read, and overall informative. I would have enjoyed a more rigorous analysis in some parts (valuation, more on the math behind venture returns) and more structure to the book. However, I do realize that data is limited so going in more detail might not be valid.

So many short chunks of text that are loosely coupled. Overall you don't have a feeling of a book, but twitter-storm. Content is OK, nothing fancy. Examples are poor and not very realistic.

That’s a very good book that summarizes the basics of the VCs and can be used as a guide for the first steps.
