AITA?

Rate this book
Dear

This past weekend my fiancé (24 M) and I (23 F) were at a party at a friend’s and I’ll admit we both got pretty wasted....

Apparently sometime that night he asked me if it was okay to summon a demon for a threesome before our wedding, and according to him, I told him, “Yes.”

I don’t actually remember this happening so clearly? But his friends must have heard me—because a week later, they’d all pitched in to have a Delectably Demonic summoning kit delivered to our house for him.

I want to put my foot down, but that would make him sad. I think he was really looking forward to it after I told him it’d be okay—and his friends really did spend a lot of money on this thing. It’s top of the line, and they can’t return it. You know how demons are.

So I kind of feel like a jerk. I mean, I did say yes, and I don’t want to let him down.

If I tell him no . . .

AITA?

AITA? is a sizzling sapphic romcom based on instantly recognizable internet lore.

4.25 Stars. Worth the read! This is my second book in a row that was better than expected. When I read in the blurb, “This past weekend my fiancé (24M) and I (23 F) were at a party at a friend’s and I’ll admit we both got pretty wasted....Apparently sometime that night he asked me if it was okay to summon a demon for a threesome before our wedding, and according to him, I told him, “Yes.” I figured this was going to be a fun erotic romance. However, I started reading a bunch of reviews, from my goodreads friends, who really enjoyed this sweet rom-com romance. And while I’m still putting the steamy tag on this, they were right that this was just a well done sapphic rom-com.

While this book takes place in a world where demons are walking around, this is less a paranormal book and much more a romance. I found myself surprised about how deep the book actually felt. I was thinking the book would be funny and a bit kinky, I was not expecting this deep dive into the art world. And I also wasn’t expecting a story about a character that was growing and changing and trying to understand her true self. There was a lot of good stuff here and it made the read so much more enjoyable than I ever would have thought.

I do want to put in two light warnings. While I would not put the erotic tag on this book, the sex scenes are not vanilla. Secondly, there is cheating going on in this book. Reading about infidelity in books doesn’t bother me if the storyline is done well, but I know it can really bother some readers. I think in this case it worked for the story and it was not really one-sided so it might not bother some readers as much.

TLDR: This was a well written sexy rom-com. Every once in a while you find little gems on Kindle Unlimited that you would never expect just by reading the blurb and title, and this was a perfect example of that. I enjoyed this book quite a bit and I want to thank all my goodreads friends who brought this good read to my attention. If Cassie writes more sapphic books in the future, I’m absolutely reading them.

When she drunkenly agrees to her fiancé summoning a demon for a threesome, Becky, 23, realises she may have a drinking problem. And maybe using alcohol as a crutch in certain circumstances isn’t her only issue. Meeting the spectacular green-skinned demon opens up a whole new world of possibilities.

Sometimes you just need a WTF book and, with this premise, this one sounded like exactly what I needed, especially with this title. I mean, how many times have I got lost in AITA posts and comments when I should have been reading a real book? And now, an actual book brings all that goodness directly to me? Yes please.

While it was the light and funny story I was hoping for, AITA? is also more than that. These two women’s – one human, one demonic – journey to finding themselves and their forever love is way more moving than I expected, way more than just a sexy romp. Becky grows from a naive young woman, unsure of her worth and lovability into someone who goes for what she wants because she deserves it. Quenalith is older (how old do demons live?) and worldlier but on her own journey, reinventing her life after grief and fury led her to jail, and sweet Becky, with her passion for art and the artists who make it, may not be who she foresaw by her side but she brings out a gentler side of Quen that may very well be the key to happiness.

AITA? is Cassie Alexander’s first f/f romance, and I hope she’ll write more. My only real issue with this book is that the story is told in first person from Becky’s POV then suddenly from Quenalith’s and back to Becky’s with no warning. Adding the character’s name at the beginning of the section would have helped. Quen and Becky sound different enough that it was very easy to figure out who was talking, but it would have been even easier not to have to figure it out every time the POV changes. Don’t let that stop you from grabbing this book, however, it’s worth your time and the effort if you’re looking for something at once sweet and sexy. Oh, and if you’re going to summon a demon, brush your teeth. You never know who is going to appear and you don’t want to have cheese breath.

I received a copy from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

I have to admit that this wasn't at all what I expected. I know that other reviewers said the same thing but I'm still surprised by the way this book is marketed which undersells it and does no justice to the story. The cover, the title, but especially the blurb suggest a levity that this book only partially has, which is an absolute pity.

In a world where demons live peacefully along with humans, Becky drunkenly agrees to have a threesome with her fiancé and a demon a few days before their wedding. This triggers a series of events in which Becky will reflect on her life choices, her relationship with alcohol and her love life.

I was looking for a special read to finish 2021 on a high and following the recommendation of my friend Jude, I picked up this one. I'm happy to say that this book was exactly what I needed and absolutely not what I expected based on my own assumptions beforehand. Starting with the title AITA (Am I the asshole), the acronym used to share problems in social media where someone is unsure whether they behaved in a selfish way. It's true that there is a part of this story that is silly, light and funny in a rom-com style. It's also correct that the blurb suggests erotic and playful aspects that the plot reflects. But this novel is so much more in terms of character development and growth.

Becky is a complex character who starts a soul-searching journey in which she has to confront her own demons (sorry for the bad pun) about her alcoholism, her sense of inadequacy and her feelings of worthiness of love. Quenalith, the sexy demon, is her opposite in many ways, experienced, self-assured, but she's also in the path of redemption, of recovering after trauma and trying to find true love again. Opposites attract in a love that doesn't recognise gender or even species barriers, just the momentous call of a soul mate.

Another startling part of this novel is Becky's work experience in the art world. This opened up to her reflections about the meaning of art which are deep and surprising for the general tone of the book. Becky's definition of art really resonated with me and it's definitely the best one I came across reading lesbian fiction. It's not intellectual but it's passionate and, in the context of the story, heartfelt. I won't share the quote because it has to be read along with the rest to be appreciated.

There are a couple of elements that are more or less expected from the description of this book, one is that there is a component of infidelity that can be a trigger to some people. If you are one of those readers, be warned. The other is the level of heat in the sex scenes, sizzling and explicit. There's a bit of paranormal component to the sex in this universe which was really exciting. Having said that, world-building is on the light side and the paranormal aspects are mostly an afterthought. Fine with me as the romance is in the driving seat. The most important thing is that all these different aspects of the book, the rom-com, the eroticism, the soul-searching, the romance, the light and funny, are all interconnected and well balanced. There's even a place for a heartfelt afterword by the author in which she talks about her coming out experience as a bisexual woman.

Overall, a great way to finish the year. 5 stars.

That's one hot demon!

Never thought I'd say this about a book with a green woman on the cover... but this book is hot! The green woman is Quenaleth the conqueror, she's a demon and she's charming. She's hot too. And I really, really want to talk about that sexy tail of hers!

But let's leave it and talk about the premise instead. So Becky, a human, drunkenly agrees to a demonic mff threesome with her frat boy fiancé and just as she begins to regret her decision, this lesbian demon is summoned from the probably defective Delectably Demonic summoning kit. If you can't tell from the premise, this book is also outrageously hilarious, and the blurb gives that away. This book is light and humorous in the way it's told, but it's also meaningful and that is what surprised me. As much as this story is about a human and a demon meeting under the most bizarre of circumstances, it is also about finding soulmates in the most unlikely of people.

Apart from the chemistry I never thought would actually work for me, I love how Becky brings out the softness in Quenaleth and how Quenaleth makes Becky rethink her life choices and learn to be true to herself.

AITA? is so good and I love this so much. Gosh! Oh, and it's on KU!

I picked this up on a whim and it turned out pretty well, I think. It's a little off on its marketing, though. I mean, the cover and blurb broadcast fluffy fun with demonic flavoring and that's not really where it goes. Both protagonists have some serious issues they're dealing with and Alexander gives them the weight they deserve.

Becky is afraid she has become an alcoholic and is in serious life-crisis when the story starts. There are red flags in her fiancé and career and she is actively ignoring them. And remaining sober to face the issues is daunting. But she's determined, even as she cringes at what she's finding. I liked that Alexander gave the background to show why she had made the choices she did and I liked how her growth arc played out.

Quen is coming out of a five-year-long sentence from her vengeance kick after losing her "zenuth" (a fated mate analog). There's a lot of hand-wavey backstory about her being "The Conqueror" and a hero of her people, which is what kept her sentence so "light". Anyway, she's the wish fulfillment catalyst with power and money and something of an instalove for Becky that's never really explained.

The worldbuilding is extremely light, with lots of elements you just have to roll with. Like, Quen's sentence is pretty much sexual slavery serving summoning kits that apparently humans can buy, now that demons are "out". She's The Conqueror, so she subverted that in her own case, but we see thousands of others in her prison complex being exploited and that's papered over in ways that would be extremely disturbing if it were meant to be taken seriously at all.

Fortunately, the worldbuilding doesn't really matter. Or, at least, I was engaged by the relationship and the two damaged women finding each other and working through some serious personal challenges to be better than they started out. So I didn't care about the instalove or the weak worldbuilding or the despicable fiancé being a thin caricature.

And this would have been a solid three stars for entertained engagement if it hadn't leaned into the harder elements of the story. It's too complicated for a spoiler tag explanation, so I'll just say that Alexander put real heart into the resolution of Becky's crisis and that Quen's support was unique and heartwarming and personally tailored to Becky's need in a way I found outstanding. It pushed this story to the four stars I'm giving it. And yes, that's despite all the above weaknesses. And the weak instalove zenuth thing that had me cringe every time Quen leans on it.

A note about Steamy: There's a single actual sex scene but some of the not-quite-sex bits were enough to edge this into the high end of my lower steam tolerance. It was kind of extra with demony flavor that took some tolerance. Okay, I'll admit that I don't find green skin tones attractive. My apologies to any green-skinned readers. It's not you. It's definitely me...

4.25 stars. What a good surprise, I didn’t quite know what to expect but this was funny and sweet in a strange kind of way. I liked the fantasy parts and how they blend in with “normal life”. I kept thinking how interesting would it be to live in that world.

I enjoyed this way more than I expected to! Super spicy and really fun, with enjoyable characters and an interesting premise/world. I was worried initially with how fast things moved and how spicy it was that the relationship would be too shallow, but the author managed to keep the emotional depth somehow even with so much steaminess! 🔥

Excellent narration, I'd definitely listen to more by this narrator! Absolutely recommend this, I'll definitely be listening to it again.

**Super bonus points for the author's honest and open coming out note at the end!**

This was... not for me. I only read this because so many of my mutual friends on here have, and they've reviewed it highly, too. But, yeah. This ended up being not what I expected. It opened with a hetero scene, which I was not expecting, and tbh wings and tails and all that stuff isn't for me.

Also, it's never explained why Quen thinks Becky is her new soul mate after one meeting, which annoyed me.

I would never have thought that I'd love this book as much as I did. This book is well and truly outside of my usual reading preferences.

I came to read it thanks to another reviewer, @pipsqueakreviews. We were DMing on instagram about another book when she bought up this this one out of the blue as something I should read. I’ve been seeing it on Goodreads for a few weeks now but didn't think it'll be for me due to the description in the blurb. As pipsqueak had such a visceral reaction to it, it was enough to push me to give it a go and read the first chapter. I’m so glad I did as I absolutely loved this book. It was just what I needed - a fun, quirky romance that kept me engaged throughout.

The premise of this book is slightly strange and quirky - Becky drunkenly agrees to summoning a demon for a threesome with her male fiancé. What happens next is the start of a very interesting romance between a human and a demon.

Apart from the quirky but also very sweet romance between Becky and Quenalith, the world setting in this book has been developed perfectly. There's enough so you can picture the setting clearly, but its not overwhelming to distract from the purpose of this book (the exceptional romance between Becky and Quenalith).

If you were like me and a bit sceptical about picking up this book, then I hope that I've persuaded you to give it a go. It's a great read and I'm hopeful that we'll see more ff romance from this author in the future.

Many thanks to @pipsqueakreviews for the push to read it! :)

I started this book knowing several friends had enjoyed it, but having forgotten what they said about it. There is more here than the steamy comedy I expected based its cover and blurb.

In the best tradition of rom-coms, it is clear from the outset that Becky and Loga do not belong together. We don't like him, or his mother (Becky's employer) and it is obvious they have to go.

I like that not a lot of time is devoted to backstory. Demons are real, they've gone public and they coexist alongside humans, while being able to move to and from other planes of existence. And they like to eat salmon.

So, Logan pressures Becky into agreeing to summoning a demon for a tryst before their wedding, because "demons don't count". Despite misgivings she goes along with his wish, and rather than a subservient "sex doll" they summon Quenalith, a powerful warrior serving time imprisoned as penance for a crime she committed. Quenalith and Becky take one look at each other and feel and instant connection, then (also in the tradition of rom-coms) they need to overcome a series of obstacles and misunderstandings keeping them apart.

The story is told from the alternating perspectives of Becky and Quenalith. The latter has experience living among humans but has a lot to learn about relating to them, and she is haunted by events from her own past which need to be put to rest so she and Becky can find their HEA before the book runs out of pages. I never could reconcile Quenalith with the pretty green-armed girl on the cover of the book as she is written as a beautiful but intimidating woman with a tendency towards masculine clothing (when not required to pass as a summoned plaything.)

And how's the sex, you ask? Phenomenal. Becky and Quenalith want each other from their first meeting, but it takes them some time to finally get there. When they do the need and longing is so there you can taste it. And being a demon, Quenalith has "assets" not available to human women, all of which are put to great use. if you're here for the sex, you'll love it!

Finally of note is an afterword from Cassie Alexander in which she talks about her own life and how she came to write this book. I don't always read appendages to a story but this one struck home with me and I urge any reader not to skip it.

I understand this is the author's first sapphic romance. In my opinion she knocks it out of the park.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I’d spent twenty-three years carving a very precise riverbank inside myself for my soul to flow through. I wasn’t prepared to have any piece of me splash out unexpectedly to make its own way.

3.5 stars. Enjoyable! The hook for this book, an "Am I the Asshole?" Reddit post from a girl whose fiancé wants to have a threesome with a succubus, is so fun and amusing, but the book itself actually gets a lot more profound than you might expect.

I really liked our characters. Becky isn't 100% sure about marrying her boyfriend, but the future mapped out for her seems to be the best she can hope for. Drunkenly agreeing to a threesome, a promise that she can't even remember, makes her realise that her drinking is more of a problem than she realised. And when the demoness shows up, and she's way more interested in Becky than her fiancé, that gives Becky even more to think about. I also really liked Quen, and the worldbuilding/lore around demons, how they revealed themselves to humanity, the ways they're different from what humans were trained to think. Quen was relegated to summoning duty as punishment for a crime, and on her very last summoning, she meets and is very intrigued by Becky. I really enjoyed the personal growth and storylines for each character: Becky dealing with sobriety and the fact that her fiancé is far from perfect; Quen dealing with the remnants of her grief and her newfound freedom. This was super spicy and I just really love the uniqueness of the plot!

Unfortunately the romance didn't so much to captivate me. There's one pretty big reason for that: for the majority of the book, Becky is still with her fiancé, so there's cheating in this. Don't get me wrong, her fiancé is a complete tool and you'll feel absolutely no sympathy for him, but I'm just not a fan of reading about infidelity. I really wish things between Becky and Logan had ended way earlier than it did. In addition, I didn't super feel the chemistry between our main characters, as much as I liked them individually. There was a kinda love at first sight aspect, which is hit-or-miss for me, and I wasn't convinced of why Quen was so smitten with Becky right off the bat. At first I thought it was a fated mates thing (which also isn't my favourite thing) but the whole zenuth thing apparently wasn't exclusive. Idk. It was a short little novella, but I've seen good romances develop within the same amount of limited pages. I wish a few things were explained more (why are demons obsessed with raw fish?)  and though the sex scenes were super hot, a couple of the words used made it veer sliiiightly into ridiculous.

Nevertheless, this was unique, really steamy, with pretty interesting worldbuilding. Great if you're looking for a paranormal romance! Definitely read the author's note at the end; made my heart grow a few sizes. <3

This is such a fun read, and surprisingly I love the writing style. I think the cover makes me underestimate it, and I didn't put many expectations on it, but I really enjoy this. The more I enjoy it, the more I hate the cover😖

Quite Pleasantly Surprised!

I debated spending the money on this book for a bit before seeing it recommended by someone that seems to have similar tastes to me. I am so very glad I purchased this book! I kind of assumed it was going to be very erotic and sometimes that’s great. There is spice. Very nice spice. But there’s also a great story told in both MCs pov. It’s fairly short but there is character growth, lots of chemistry, nicely written continuous story, a beautiful/sexy resolution and hea. Hoping to get a bit more of these two!

This was both incredibly sexy and extremely wholesome all at the same time! While the hook from the synopsis is accurate, AITA? is so, so much more than I expected. I absolutely adored both of our leads and found myself rooting for them immediately. The worldbuilding isn't that extensively explored but it still felt very plausible and well rounded even with minimal words expended on it. I hope the author does more books set in this 'verse. Especially more books centering a sapphic couple!

Also, I did use the love triangle tag for this, because the trope does exist in the story, but it didn't feel... I don't even know how to explain what i mean. More than anything, the central conflict of AITA was whether Becky stay with her safe, wealthy, douchebag fiance (he wasn't, like, abusive or anything but he was an absolute tool), or if she would choose herself and her own happiness despite the risk involved. When I think of love triangles I tend to think of stories where one person has two excellent but very different love interests both vying for them, and this didn't feel like that at all. It's also not that Logan was a villain - but it was quickly obvious Becky deserved better.

...And that mess of a paragraph is exactly why I tend to avoid writing reviews, lol. I'm terrible at them. What I'm trying to say is that even if you, like me, don't usually like love triangles, I still think AITA? is worth giving a shot, especially since it's on KU to read for free. The audiobook is also on Scribd to listen to with your membership or free trial, if you've never used it before. (I don't usually do this but you can use my referral link HERE for 60 days free)

A few things to be aware of going in:
- I haven't seen any reviews bring up but I'm a sober alcoholic so it stuck out to me: Becky is an alcoholic who's trying to get sober and at one point, she relapses. If you're not in the headspace to handle that, maybe save AITA for later when you feel like you are.
- This story contains cheating. Kind of. It's complicated, but I'd guess what happens in the book would be considered cheating by some people, so I wanted to give that warning. I can't explain the intricacies (I tried and it turned into SO MANY WORDS that it was basically a summary of the entire plot) so if that's a hard pass for you, then pass, but if you don't see everything as super black and white then you, like me, might enjoy the book anyway.
- The sex isn't entirely vanilla. There's tailfucking. This could either be a pro or a con depending on the person, but something to be aware of, lol.

Anyway I'm just rambling now but I do recommend checking this one out, especially if you enjoyed books like Legends & Lattes. This is paranormal romance so it's not a "low stakes fantasy" in the same vein but it did give me similar wholesome/cute vibes.

// not a bad idea + not done good

expectations too high?

possibly

gr friends rated the story pretty high so even though i wasn’t into it (judging mostly by the cover and then the synopsis as well) i picked it up

felt like a cliche wattpad story i’d read as a tween

written by other tweens

it’s short so not many deeper stuff could really be happening - it’s just a lot of random quick things said and done - very 2d

wasn’t a fan of the characters

was annoyed with the word zenuth by the third time (wanted to scream by the thirtieth)

Certainly, was a lot better than I was expecting based on the cover. However, it missed a few things to push it into something more memorable for me.

I liked the world building, and I appreciated that the big moment was not a product of miscommunication. The writing was pretty easy to read, and the choice to have it as a modern fantasy kept the long-winded/over complicated fantasy descriptions to a minimum so that we could focus on the good stuff.

The biggest miss for me, though, was around the established relationship. It was just so problematic, and the friends and everyone around the one lead just stayed in this weird neutral position instead of staging an intervention or helping her. The other miss was that the other lead was a chivalrous butch and i just need more of a reason as to why that is, especially when the first time you are introduced to her she has a bit of a chaotic side that isnt explored enough.

If you have kindle unlimited this is probably worth adding to your list. I paid a couple dollars while it was on sale and still felt it was worth the price. The big caveat is that it does have an element that can be described as cheating. I felt like it was handled reasonably, but if you're not open to that trope, you might not enjoy this title as much.

3 stars. I liked the writing and the plot was really fun and light. The characters of Quen and Becky were both very likable as individuals but I don’t know I just wasn’t feeling the chemistry between them but damn was the sex scenes in this ridiculously hot. So well written and…um…*unique*. Other than that I wasn’t sold on the romance but everything else about this book was super entertaining and fun.

This was so fun! A woman and her (horrible) fiancé summon a demon for a threesome, and she falls in love. Lost a star for me due to the fiancé being so horrible, and the element of his cheating and lying that wasn’t really resolved.

3.5/5 ⭐️s

How cute was this?! Becky and Quenalith were adorable and surprisingly fleshed out for the shortened length of this book. I really loved their relationship!
I was a little worried the premise of the book (based of the Reddit thread) would’ve been ridiculous, but it had so little to do with the plot that I forgot about it pretty quickly. I did think the issues with Becky’s fiancé were resolved a little lazily, but it’s a small complaint for how much I enjoyed the rest of the book.

I have to admit that I went into AITA? (Am I The Asshole?) with curiosity, but also a smidgen of doubt. The blurb doesn’t give very much away, and I hadn’t read anything from Cassie Alexander, and Avery Caris is a new to me narrator. It is only at the end when the writer’s afterword is read (don’t skip it, it’s beautiful and brave) that I see why. AITA? is her first fully sapphic novel.

The thing I appreciated about the story was that there wasn’t a long-winded back story about demons. The author explained quite simply what was and then moved on.

After Becky agrees to a threesome between herself, her fiancée and a demon all while under the influence of alcohol, she realizes she needs to stop drinking and take back control of her life. When the night arrives and the demon is summoned, nothing goes to plan, but Becky is in awe as Quenalith (the demon) puts her fiancée in his place.
Quen begins to reintegrate herself into society after being locked up for a crime she doesn’t regret. But she can’t get the human out of her mind. After tracking her down, Quen and Becky begin to get to know each other and can’t deny the attraction that has been building between them since they first locked eyes. Becky has to decide whether to keep on the path that has been chosen for her or to follow her heart. Quen knows what she wants but has the strength and patience to wait.

AITA? was the book I needed to listen to. The narration was perfect, and the story was original. AITA? was fast-paced, funny, and really, really hot. And when I thought it was about to be angsty and full of miscommunication, it wasn’t. The MCs just talked candidly about their wants and desires and took what they needed. If you haven’t read or listened to AITA? and you are not afraid to be pushed out of your comfort zone just a bit. Be sure to check it out.

4.25 stars? This got a little deeper than I was expecting for such a lighthearted premise. Becky is engaged to a man, Logan, who checks all the boxes on paper. He’s handsome and rich, oh and his mom is her boss. Logan insists she agreed to summon a demon for a threesome when she was drunk. Instead of getting a succubus, they got Quenalith the Conquerer. Quenalith is a very old, badass demon who instantly wants Becky. Once Logan realizes the threesome isn’t happening since she only has eyes for Becky, he ends the summoning. Quen has to find Becky again on her own.

Logan is like your stereotypical frat bro finance guy (I’m not even 100% sure he works in finance, I think he does, but that’s the vibe he gives me anyway). He wants to hook up with a demon since it “doesn’t count”. That sex demon summoning kit costs like $25k. Wtf?

Becky is a doormat in the beginning and a recovering alcoholic. What was refreshing was that she chooses herself first. She works on herself and has a lot of growth and a journey to sobriety that occurs.

Quen is a bit otherworldly, and also strong, confident, and force to be reckoned with. She is green and has a tail and wings. She was all in as soon as she saw Becky but she was patient and let Becky do the healing she needed without her.

There are definite OW vibes from both Becky and Logan. I mean Logan and Becky both said demons don’t count though, so I mean technically it doesn’t? It just feels like it does lmao.

The protagonist Becky has everything she wants - she is getting married to her first boyfriend in a few weeks, works in a gallery and has great friends. But then her boyfriend/fiancé talks her into summoning a demoness for a threesome - and Becky get's the opportunity to rethink whether or not she is happy with her current life.

This was such a fun read! I liked to characters and read the entire thing in one go.
If cheating is a deal-breaker for you or you are triggered by alcohol-addiction I would be careful with this but apart from that I highly recommend this for anyone who wants a fun, short, surprisingly sweet FF read with spice. I also liked the bi-rep in this - also congrats to the author for coming out!
