An accessible, comforting and practical book for anyone experiencing anxiety, from the author of The Recovery Letters and How to Tell Depression to Piss Off.
Despite more and more people opening up about their mental health, anxiety is still taboo. We're not supposed to be anxious, we're supposed to be resilient and able to 'get on with it'. We are expected to excel while juggling a hectic, pressurised schedule at home and at work, despite the lines between the two being more blurred than ever.
This audiobook dispels that taboo. It is for anyone who has experienced general anxiety disorder, trauma-related anxiety, clinical anxiety and those with 'low-level' anxieties.
At once empathetic and entertaining, How to Tell Anxiety to Sod Off offers 40 ways to get to a better place with anxiety. They are born out of the author's personal experience of managing his own anxiety and his many years of working as a counsellor helping people with their mental health.

"James book (How to Tell Anxiety To Sod Off) is written with honesty, fun, warmth & understanding. His language style used, shows elements (quite rightly) of, derisory contempt, for a condition, which, at the very least, is a right pain in the proverbial! It tricks us, it thwarts us, it exasperates us ....... And yet ........ as James demonstrates, we can tilt this condition sideways. Find ways/paths through it ......... all individual to each person, as is the nature of anxiety, and, in some instances, see the ridiculousness of it.
This book, is like, a warm, empathic, giant hug, for when we are all feeling shaky, indecisive, and life seems pretty sucky.
Never patronising, nor, belittling, his personal knowledge of having, and, still dealing (as we all strive to do) with managing anxiety, is user friendly (omg! did I just use that phrase?! I'm like, so down with the kids!)
Easy to digest language, easy to read print, which helps when your mind is a mush.
It's my go to book, when feeling anxiety, for whatever reasons. Picking it up, is like catching up with an old friend who "gets it"
I can almost hear it saying, "she's back again! God love her!"
Very non substancial and with very few concrete handy hints how overcome anxiety attacks when they occur. The best advise, it seems, was to wiggle your fingers or toes or any other body part during an attack as that will distract you. And yes, it will, but that is quite a meager picking from a 171 page book.
I didn't connect with this as much as his book Piss off Depression and found at times he wrote it from the perspective of someone working, when for many who struggle with anxiety they struggle to work.
That said it was still relatively well written in an easy to read style and there was lots of helpful advice and chapters for me.
I enjoyed this book for its empathy and solidarity; whilst the coping mechanisms don’t really seem that achievable for someone with chronic anxiety (and who has tried quite a few of them) just sharing and spending time with a fellow sufferer, who describes his feelings in such a relatable and often visual way, was helpful.
James Withey provides useful and efficient ways to ease and calm the anxious mind, narrating with a dose of humour his own experiences with the high level anxiety which if confronting with, experiences to which eventually, definitely many people are relating to.
Very informative and mindful! Contains very useful tips on dealing with anxiety, I would recommend this to anyone who needs to take control of their anxiety!
A funny and practical guide about anxiety; a quick read, but you can also go in depth and examine your own history with anxiety and decide how do you want to go forward.
