Dead in Bed follows Ashley Young after a sexually-transmitted plague breaks out in her small town. When the plague begins leaving its victims with a bizarrely amplified libido, Ashley has to be willing to do anything-no matter how difficult or morally questionable-in order to survive.

Meanwhile, a meta-narrative follows Bailey Simms, teen author of Dead in Bed, while she's stuck writing at home with a rare medical condition. As Bailey's book grows in popularity, and her fans start to clamor for the sequel, she learns that being a successful author may come with a terrifyingly dangerous price.

”You’ve never, ever read a book like this.” That is the truest statement in the blurb of this book.

Dead In Bed by Bailey Simms (Adrian Birch) is a well-thought-out, riveting, two-book serial. It has captured the love of many readers, and it is easy to see why.

The plot sounds pretty strange; it’s basically about zombies who crave sexual contact. But the experience you get when you start reading the book is far more exciting than a steamy zombie apocalypse tale. Firstly, the pacing is brilliant and consistent, each short chapter ending on some sort of cliffhanger or tension. This gives it a fast-pace that never slacks once throughout the entire two books.

Then there are the characters, all of whom are believable human beings with unique voices. Ashley Young - the protagonist - is selfless, understanding and willing to do whatever it takes to help those she loves, which, I’ll admit, sounds a bit typical. However, she drives the story forward and is easy for readers to emotionally attach themselves to, so she’s a good enough MC for me.

But possibly the most remarkable thing about these books is the awesome way in which the author experiments with form and self-inserts. Adrian Birch - the actual, real-life person who wrote Dead In Bed - has created a fictional writer named Bailey Simms with her own interesting backstory to tell this story through her lens. It’s less confusing than it sounds; at the beginning of each part (of which there are seven in each book) is an author’s note from Bailey Simms (who isn’t real) talking about events in her life, which loosely mirror the events happening to the characters in the actual story (very loosely). What the reader gets is two stories, side by side: the book, and the story of Bailey Simms, all dreamed up in the marvellous mind of Adrian Birch.

It’s fun to read, and I think writers can also learn a valuable lesson from this - that you should take creative risks, because sometimes they can really pay off.

Anyway, I really enjoyed Dead In Bed. It brings something fresh to the overflowing table of zombie books, and I think fans of the genre will love it as much as I did. I didn’t give it a full five stars, though, for the simple reason that I felt the descriptions sometimes lacked, as if the author was just trying to churn out some scenes as quickly as possible.

Overall, a solid four-star serial novel.

A thoroughly entertaining and page-turning thriller that will keep you hooked till the last page has been turned.

What a story! Marvellous. The plot is superb. And not just Ashley's story. The interwoven author's notes present a story all of its own. The depth of emotions it portrays, it feels so surreal. As if you are literally living through the ordeal with the author. For a moment it gives you a pause, you start wondering if maybe it is reality. And it might be.

On the other hand, Ashley and Ian are fighting a losing battle. All seems lost and they are dying to give in to the feelings they have for each other. But proprietary dictates otherwise. Of course, Ashley is infected and that little detail further adds another barrier between them. But on the whole, the entire story along with the author's notes is a masterpiece.

Just the right amount of gore, battle, mystery and the bittersweet romance. All brought together so beautifully. You just don't want it to end.

main character made stupid decisions most of the time but was still likeable. this book was very bittersweet, both on ashley's side as well as bailey's. this duology made an indescribable impression on 13 year old me and is still one of my favourites to this day :) (especially because i vividly remembered lots of scenes even after four years, before rereading this.)

I didnt love it as much as the first one. But then again, it's ending and theres more drama than action. I could've rated it 5 stars still if it's just that. It's just less of a star just because there's a bit of a bed scene at the ending, and I didn't like it. I just can't wrapped my head that they have their own family before everything happened.

Sequels are rarely as good as the first books and I went into this expecting to be let down, but that was the complete opposite for this sequel. It had the same fast pace and page turning thrills of the first book, with the author notes keeping you hooked and wanting more. This was such a good series and just like the first book, one of my favourite reads of the year.

This was a spectacular book and a very interesting take on the zombie virus.
I think that the author did a great job in tying everything together including tying himself somewhat into the story.
I really enjoyed this book series and can't wait to see what Adrian Birch comes up with next!

Wow! This book is an unexpected 5 star read. I must admit, when I read 'sex-craved zombie virus' I was a little unsure as to whether I really wanted to pick this series up, but I am so glad I did. Bailey Simms has taken the ZA and turned it on its head. From the first page, it grabs you and soon you find yourself at 3 am immersed in the word of Ashley Young. This series is so much more than advertised. It is well written, the dialog flows perfectly, I didn't have to reread pages to figure out what just happened and the suspense level was spot on! While we normally do not associate sex and zombies, she manages to mesh the two nicely and truly create the perfect storm. Kudos to Bailey Simms! I will be watching for more of her works!
