Be still my poor swooning book-loving heart
Helpless has a mix of everything that makes me love the Steel Demons series- some s*xy fun, some interfering but completely pettable gods, a burst of action, and the delicious development of another relationship for Mari. And can I just say that I unashamedly, unabashedly, (and insert third synonym for giving zero f**ks) play favorites, and this is the relationship arc I have been waiting for!!! Not that I didn't love the rest, but Shadow, well, look back at the first line of this review.
Before I wax eloquent about my favoritism, let's get to the goods on the others. One thing I think Ash is doing very well with this series is giving some balance. So far, each of the men whose relationship arc is spotlighted does get a sense of priority, BUT the others don't fall to the wayside. They remain important, they still have their own POVs, and they're lives keep moving because they're major players too. These babies don't get put in the corner just because it's someone else's turn to get some extra lovin'.
Reaper, Jandro, and Gunner are all finding purpose, though it looks different for each of them. Reaper has all the pressures of leading the MC in their quest for a new home but also the personal pressures of trying to reach his brother so he can learn more about what he'll need to prepare for. Gunner is finding his place and getting settled in this unconventional relationship, and I think that there are some leadership opportunities ahead for him in the next book (but it'd be a bit of spoilers to explain why). Jandro is still a lovable chicken-daddy (not something I ever thought I'd write), and with Shadow's relationship arc getting our spotlight, it's interesting to see his perspective on the budding relationship. As much as Shadow will be growing from his connection with Mari, I think Jandro stands to gain something from this arrangement too. I love the friendship between the two men and am really excited to see how Mari taking a new role in Shadow's life will change that.
And Shadow...Shadow, Shadow, Shadow. I just can't. You know that feeling when you see an adorable kitten? Where your heart just wants to squeal and squish it and keep it safe and love it forever? That's exactly what I felt. Underneath this scarred and supposedly broken man is a smart, observant, sweet, and both adorably fumbling and confident character that readers are just going to die for just a little bit more as they read Helpless.
In case you're unconvinced, just try to read this without your heart clenching and being hit with the insane urge to reach into your book and hug him:
"Everyone is always telling me I'm improving. I'm doing better. I've come so far. Which is nice, I guess. But all that implies that I'm still not good enough. I'm not there yet. I'm not normal yet. Like you said, I keep watching people to make sure I'm not being weird. I read psychology, history, all of that, to learn how normal people behave. I exhaust myself trying to remember everything, only to keep hearing the same things. 'You're doing better, Shadow. You've improved so much.' You're the first person to tell me that- that I'm already good enough."
I don't want to dig too far beyond that because all of you Shadow-lovers deserve to have all the same squeals, sighs, and swoons that I did. Let me just say, their relationship has so much further to go, but I think that you guys will be as excited as I am.
Overall, I'm still so happy and satisfied with this series. We're making our way closer and closer to a confrontation with Tash that I'm sure is to bring all the bloodshed and heartache that is going to make us want to pitch a fit and ugly cry, but we're still moving forward on all other developing fronts: the demons finding a new home, getting closer and learning more about their gods, and Mari's quad becoming a connected family. Ash does a great job of weaving these lines of plot together so that one moment or conflict or interaction checks the box on more than one of those fronts at a time. It's done very smoothly so that the reader is always staying in that headspace of being interested and trying to catch every detail. There's no filler or fluff, and that's something that I personally really enjoy.
I do have to say though, I am waiting with baited breath because in each of the books we get a refresher on the warning that something big is going to happen, and we're going to have to just clutch our kindles and hope that Mari & the guys (especially Shadow, hint hint, nudge nudge) make it through okay.
