Fate Twister

Wayne Gamm was born on a remote sheep farm on a mountainside in north-mid Wales on a stormy night in June. The weather was not significant because it rains a lot in that part of Wales in most parts of Wales, in fact, pretty often.

The doctors, the midwife and even the family itself, wanted the baby to be delivered in the nearest hospital because they knew that he was going to be large and it was her first baby, but for reason's that will become apparent, his mother and grandmother thought that would be a very bad idea.

His father, Samuel Gamm, was the son of sheep farmers from Devon in England and he had met his future wife while touring in Wales as an itinerant sheerer. Wayne's mother, Gwynedd was a Welsh-speaker from the area. All of her family had been born on the farm, Yr Ardd Y Ddraig, The Dragon's Garden, for as far back as they knew - a family bible put that at at least three hundred years.

All of Wayne's ancestors on his mother's side, and that included Rhiannon, his maternal grandmother, or Nain in Welsh, were witches, or male witches, or warlocks, of the White variety, meaning that their intentions were good, rather than that their skin was pale.

The problem with the males of Gwynedd's line in her own words was that they were 'lose cannon(s)', meaning that they had difficulty focussing their energy or powers. Wayne followed after this fashion, although all witch babies have to learn some self-control, even the females.

So, Gwynedd and Rhiannon held out high hopes that Wayne would be able to focus, or concentrate, more than his male antecedents, but he showed little sign of it. It turned out that he had such great power, and so little control, that even his own family were wary of him.

He was feared and shunned at school and college by teachers and fellow-students alike although they didn't know the full extent of the Gann's family history. They only knew from experience, that things could be a little bit weird when Wayne was around.

The more astute noticed that when he was happy, good things happened, but when he had been upset, well, anything could befall anyone, not only the person responsible for Wayne's bad mood. Luckily, Wayne had a sunny disposition.

He was a happy person by nature, but this made it worse for him, because he didn't want to hurt people, so he would not accept that it was he who was causing the disruptions. They called him Fatetwister behind his back.

Wayne grew up dejected, rejected, lonely and in denial.

He discovered that girls were more friendly towards him, especially those who didn't know his background, because he was tall, dark and handsome. He was also quiet - the strong, silent type rather than brash like most boys of his own age.

This is the story of the first part of the life of Wayne Gamm, Fatetwister.

Owen Jones, Amazon Best-Selling Author from Barry, Wales, has lived in several countries and travelled in many more. While studying Russian in the USSR in the '70's, he hobnobbed with spies on a regular basis; in Suriname, he got caught up in the 1982 coup; and while a company director, he joined the crew of four as the galley slave to sail, from Barry to Gibraltar, a home-made concrete yacht, which was almost rammed by a Russian oil tanker and an American aircraft carrier.
“I am a Celt, and we are romantic”, he said when asked about his writing style, “and I firmly believe in reincarnation, Karma and Fate, so, sayings like 'Do unto another...', and 'What goes round comes around' are central to my life and reflected in my work. I write about what I see, or think I see, or dream... and, in the end it is all the same really”. He speaks seven languages and is learning Thai, since he lives in Thailand with his Thai wife of seventeen years.
His first novel, Daddy's Hobby is from the seven-part series 'Behind The Smile: The Story of Lek, a Bar Girl in Pattaya', but his largest collection is 'The Megan Series', twenty-three novelettes on the psychic development of a teenage girl, the subtitle of which, 'A Spirit Guide, A Ghost Tiger and One Scary Mother!' sums them up nicely. He has written fifty novels and novelettes, including: Dead Centre; Andropov's Cuckoo; Fate Twister; The Disallowed (a philosophical comedy); Tiger Lily of Bangkok; and A Night in Annwn (Annwn being the ancient Welsh word for Heaven). Many have been translated into foreign languages and narrated into audio books.
Owen Jones writes stories set in Wales, Spain and Thailand, where he now lives. He is a life-long Spiritualist, and this belief is interwoven, in a very realistic way, into many of his books and storylines. If you like a touch of the 'supernatural', try his books
He sums his life up thus: “Born in the Land of Song, Living in the Land of Smiles”.

The word paranormal means ‘beyond scientific understanding’ and encompasses far more than vampires and werewolves and the like. I need to clarify this now because in ‘Fate Twister’, author Owen Jones has created a gentle paranormal tale which follows the early life of Wayne Gamm. His protagonist was born in the Welsh mountains, on a sheep farm belonging to his parents, and Jones recreates the ambience of that region and its people with delicate accuracy.

Yet Wayne Gamm is no ordinary child. His mother and Grandmother are both powerful White Witches and young Wayne has inherited their abilities, though, unlike them, has next-to-no control over them. Many live in not a little fear of Wayne’s involuntary reactions to any kind of provocation or conflict that crosses his path. Here, and throughout the novel, the author masterfully creates a sense of underlying menace where Wayne’s, and that of the female members of his family, potential responses to Life’s curveballs are never far from the reader’s mind.

The story follows his life as he grows up in the mountains, using his powers unknowingly to help others. His particular affinity for animals, especially horses, results in his working for a circus and travelling away from his beloved mountains. It’s there where he meets someone who will shape the course of his future.

While reading the story, I was constantly recalling the movie ‘Forrest Gump’, for the character of Wayne Gamm and the adventures he undertakes are, in many ways, a parallel to that tale, minus the celebrities of course. It’s an original story that offers hope and warmth, and a pleasing break from the well-trammelled paths of popular paranormal.

I was given this book for free at my request but the opinion is of my own. Wayne’s family for many generations have been born at the farm because of the history of them having witches. Wayne is tormented in school because of his family history even though he’s normally a generally good nature person. This was a cute story but the thing that stops least for me on being a five star book is that there isn’t really much action to keep the story moving. Yes, Wayne deals with things but it’s more like someone is just talking not really showing certain things. I feel that he could have gone through more obstacles in certain spots and more actual paranormal happenings.
