I started reading Matt's essays on his blog, drawn there from some long-forgotten link from the world of tech and computers. I quickly discovered that there was more—much more—to this blogger... who eventually gave up being a software developer and well-regarded tech speaker to become a writer full-time. Much of the impetus for that audacious leap can be clearly seen in this collection of his essays. They are sensitive, nuanced, and above all, humane.
I really enjoyed reading these essays. The mood is often melancholic in sort of the way Americans assume Scottish weather to be. Gemmell clearly spends much time in introspection, and a theme of separation from self to gain an honest self-appraisal runs throughout. Gemmell is honest, open, and intimate, and I look forward to reading more!
