TRAGEDY. With no mother she can remember, a father lost years ago, and a beloved grandmother gone too, Maggie Mooreland knows the meaning of the word like no other.
VICTIM. By age thirteen, she was labeled as such by her peers. And she couldn't fight it. Or even deny it. By seventeen, she might as well have had it tattooed on her forehead.
HOPE. Even now that she is eighteen, and officially an adult, it's still a foreign concept. An ideal never to be realized. Something for others to have and for Maggie to envy. Until she meets him. Theodore Kimball (Teekay) Marcus. He's wild and spontaneous and gorgeous and the heir to a real estate fortune. He knows what he wants and he takes it. And remarkably, incredibly - he sees Maggie as more than just the sum of her past.
SECRETS. Teekay has them. Maggie knows it. And they're like an unhealed wound, waiting to be bumped in just the wrong way so they can bleed all over again. He's hiding something that can hurt her. He's hiding something that's already hurting himself. And Maggie is terrified that this is the beginning of the end.
ONE SUMMER. Will it be long enough to heal their hearts and their minds? Or will it tear them both apart?
I am not sure what it was, but I could not continue with this one. When we meet the heroine, she is being bullied by four girls when the hero comes in and saves her. Bullying is a serious issue and my heart went out to the heroine. However, I was a little turned off when not an hour after the hero "saves" the heroine, he is asking for a kiss and then some other stuff. I just thought it felt out of place and a bit ridiculous. When did the connection happen??? He saw her in a weak position not being able to defend herself. What made him attracted to her and want to kiss her, etc??
I am not telling you not to read it. This may work for you, but it did not work for me.
I just looked at the blurb for the first time since I bought the book in 2015. I didn't see the warnings, but now that I do, I don't think they're needed. The book stands great on its own. I wouldn't categorize this as an erotic romance. And while there is instant attraction/lust, it's not instant love which gives me an ick feeling.
I won't deny TeeKay and Maggie have chemistry and it's intense. It's part of what makes this story great. I just wish there had been more details when it came to TeeKay and his past. It made what happened in the present with Maggie a little unclear. I mean it was clear he was really into her, but not why he was so hot and cold with her.
The story is told from Maggie's point of view. Maggie herself is an interesting conundrum. She's seen a lot in her life and is strong, yet so weak. She really has learned not to fight and has strong phobias for good reason. Seeing her fight them and come into her own was great.
This book was a fast read and I enjoyed it. Like I said earlier, I would've liked more details about certain people and things. I really liked how different this book was from the previous two books I'd read by Amber Rides. I really do wish she'd written more and hope she'll write more someday.
Teekay & Maggie have a really sweet but very passionate week together I really enjoyed watching their relationship grow. The sex scenes are written very well and are extremely steamy but not overdone. The bullying made me sad and so mad why do people have to be so cruel? This book is definitely worth reading I'm glad I did!
This would be a 2 star rating for the writer putting in the effort and a captivating cover.
I found this novel by accident and after reading the synopsis, figured, why not? Am I sorry I read it? No. Was it good? It could have been.
The page count says 300 or so but it was really more like 100. So false page counting. This was more of a novella. This novel had potential, if only there was better editing and more depth to the storyline. There was literally like seven characters to the storyline less the people in public places. No real reason for anything besides a person who had mental health issues, which mind you is a serious thing and nothing to joke about, and a young lady who was a punching bag. Like I said, the story had potential but the writer didn't build on that besides counting down the days, the heated, weird heat between the two main characters and calling that a relationship.
If there are other books by this writer, chances are, I would not do a repeat read.
A love story with two amazing characters. Two broken souls, who find each other when they needed saving the most.
Maggie has been barely living life. She's been through so much in her short 18 years. A horrifying and traumatic past. What's worse was the constant bullying. So much bullying that she began to believe them. She seemed so fragile but I could feel she was something stronger underneath. I was crazy emotional reading what she's been through. So many feels of compassion, understanding, anger, frustration and hope. The way this author carefully reveals the awful events of her past was stupifying! I think I have a note that says 'mind. blown.' And another reading 'bomb. dropped.'
Teekay. Well first let me say, what the hell is up with this name? I realize it's just his nickname not his given name, but really? Alright, so now that's of my chest...
Teekay was one of those characters I loved! I loved his alpha nature, the way he protected Maggie right from the start. How he was patient enough to fill in all her cracks and bring down all her walls. So you can imagine my heart breaking when I found out he was also a broken soul, but I really had no idea what he was holding in. And again, the segways used by this author to bridge those gaps between Teekay's vulnerabilities and his strength to really 'get' Maggie were so perfectly executed!
Something I just have to say is, I loved their pillow talk! Silly right? It wasn't overdone or cheesy. And although some might say it was cliche`, I say it was poetic! Oh! And I loved the 'tell me three things' game!!
I have so many emotions running through me right now I don’t even know where to start. In many ways it is a beautiful story. Teekay and Maggie both have baggage; deep, dark things in their lives that make them difficult separately, and a mess together. They are so easy to love, so easy to root for, that every page I was waiting for something God awful to happen that would just rip me apart. In other ways it is not so beautiful. Teekay is his own worst enemy, and the effect of bullying on the human psyche takes a horrible toll. I couldn’t stop reading. It pulled me in from the first word on the first page and didn’t turn loose until the very last word. I truly loved it. I loved Maggie so much for being so strong when she was so beaten down. And I fell head over heels for Teekay for fighting his way out of his own past to be Maggie’s hero. What an amazing story. 5 Beautiful Stars
Parts of this I loved but parts of it were underdeveloped or totally unrealistic. 2 big examples 1.the heroine driving to get away from trouble (despite never learning to drive!!!) 2. The heroine is a fantastic artist but this is not really entwined enough in the plot or epilogue.
That said, it held my interest and I enjoyed the bully storyline. Our poor herione has a terrible time until the hero swoops in and saves her from the town bitches.
I did route for them to get their HEA but felt some of the topics ( quite major- death, depression, anxiety, bullying were skimmed over)
It wasn't your typical rich boy meets poor girl but it did fall down in a few places.
