I LOVE YOU, SHION. MORE THAN ANYTHING. Risking everything, Shion and Rat have finally made it to the top floor of the Correctional Facility, where Shion is finally reunited with Safu! But has Shion's rescue attempt come too late? Is the Safu he once knew gone forever? As Rat rushes to find a way out, Shion must make a heartbreaking decision: Leave, saving Rat and himself from capture, or stay, and find another solution? Either way, Shion may lose a friend, or his own life! The tale of No. 6 builds to a climax in its second-to-last volume! Includes special bonus story!
Ahh this was such a good final volume in the series and I'm so glad none of my faves died (although they came close). I wish the final chapter had been slightly different though, as I didn't want Nezumi to go travelling (I'm trash, I know) and I was hoping for a more closure on Shion and Nezumi's relationship. Nevertheless though, I really enjoyed this series and thought the plot was more structured and clearer than the anime.
Shion and Nezumi finally found Safu. And we finally find out what happened to her. Hint: It's not pretty and much more horrible than what happened in the anime. No wonder Shion spends half of this volume in denial and lashes out at Nezumi a lot. I don't blame him one bit. It's ironic that now is the time when Safu feels the most as a well rounded, lovable character, but maybe that was the intention. It hurts.
We already knew how important Nezumi and Shion are to each other. They're each other's most important person and it's made clear in this volume once again that they're also each other's drive. Shion wouldn't be able to do half the stuff he does if he lost Nezumi.
Meanwhile in No.6 the story takes a very different turn from the anime (once again, I assume this is how it happened in the original novels) and the people of the city are starting to revolt against their government, because Yomin (who is way more active and even more revenge driven than in the anime) told them (aka he lied) they have the cure for the 'sickness' that is befalling them.
Once again, I read quickly so as to maximize my future torment at not having the next volume/book.
I have a lot to say about Safu. A lot to say. Same with Shion and Nezumi, but mostly about Safu. It involves a lot of cussing and almost no coherent thought though, so I will refrain from babbling.
(While I'm on the subject, I'd like to address my general lack of "review" in my "reviews" of the manga volumes I read. It's because, I don't usually find I can even give full reviews on manga. I believe that the whole series should be critiqued as a whole, not in units. In addition, I find that because I don't read as much manga as books, my thoughts are not really interesting. I have nothing to add except my opinions, which are short and succinct.)
I still love the story but it's starting to drag; it's definitely not as fast-paced as it used to be. It feels like they had too much material for 8 volumes but not enough for 9, so they had to add some fillers.

First of all, the colour pages in this volume are gorgeous. There are a few images I remember from previous volumes that I was happy to see in colour, because they look so much prettier. Also, they’re near the end of the volume, not the beginning, which is useful to know, because it worried me when I first picked up the book.
Now—this was a pretty intense, sad volume.
There was the confrontation between Shion and Safu, which needed to happen and revealed some things, but was mostly just very sad. It was downright painful for Shion, and I feel so bad for him. And then Shion and Rat have to escape, which is bad and violent and scary. Shion is also trying to deal with what happened with Safu, the poor thing, because odd things are happening to him at the same time.
Meanwhile, Dogkeeper and Rikiga are waiting for Shion and Rat to arrive, including being attacked on their own. It’s kind of bad, and leads to the cliffhanger.
There’s only one volume left! I have no idea how this series is going to end, nor how it’s going to wrap up in only one book. It seems like there’s too much to happen. Either way, I hope it’s good, and I’m excited to read it.
“Rat… What am I here for? In this place, a fallen coward unable to move… Why am I here? … Answer me, Rat.”
Rat and Shion have made it to Safu at the top of the correctional facility, but must accept one last horrifying truth. However, Rat is able to destroy Mother at long last. But the race to finally escape the correctional facility before it collapses may be more than either Rat or Shion can bear.
My heart breaks for Safu. I’ve only ever seen the 2011 anime, so I was not expecting for something even worse to happen to her. I’m disappointed that we only get to see Safu interacting with Shion and other characters in the first volume. Like Shion, I would have wanted to see her interact in this world more, especially with Rat. It’s bittersweet, but I’m glad Rat was able to save her in the end.
After the scene with Safu, the plot races to the end of the volume almost as fast as Rat and Shion must run to escape. It’s hard to believe we spent almost four whole volumes inside the correctional facility, when it only takes them half a volume to leave it. (Not that Rat, Shion, and the others are completely out of the woods yet.) I honestly have no idea what the last volume will entail. Rat and Shion may actually return to No. 6, but will it be the same city they remember?
I still love Nezumi. I will always love Nezumi. In the end I felt bad for Safu she was soo "I wanna see the boy I love, I want to say "I love u", I wanna die with him" and suddenly he appears with Nezumi and she was ...dammmmn...so this is THE Nezumi and everything was ok, i love u even tought you don't love me like a lover, just like a friend but I'm glad we both experience the love and endless tears of a dead child. That was cruel, bro! And how Nezumi protects Shion ;___; ...I still feel bad that Lily's stepfather was gone forever. He seems like a guy that just wanted to have a happy family but..bye bye...

The boys finally reunite with Safu, but things do not go as plan and the illusion of rescuing the young girl are shattered quickly. Honestly, this moment is heartbreaking. There is a page where Shion talk to her about Nezumi, this is probably one of the most beautiful panel in this series.
It the end of the correctional Facility and time is running out since chaos have spread after a violent explosion. The boys are badly wounded.
There is a little bonus story in this volume that talk about freedom.
This volume end in a cliffhanger and I can’t believe there is only one book left to wrap everything up.

Poor Safu.😭 Shion doesn't want to accept what happens, wants to fight Nezumi and then give up and it's so sad. Like thinking what happened to this teenage character who never did anything wrong in her life but gets captured and unmade is so sickening.
Then they are now trying to escape the facility while it's about to blow but Nezumi gets injured protecting Shion and oh my god it's just emotional whiplash how many times I keep getting thrown around.
Amazing volume. So much suspense and action that keeps you guessing right up to the very end of the volume. BEAUTIFUL colored artwork in this volume as well. I'm so in love with this manga-ka!
Why is everything about this series so bittersweet!? There is only one (!!!!!!) volume left and I am in a serious critical condition. I am NOT ready to part from Shion, Rat and Dogkeeper...
