The Damaged

Rate this book
Until he came to the team, Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Sonny Pauley was positive no one cared if he lived or died. He wasn’t sure he cared either. Now he’s ready to face the looming vampire war beside his chosen family. As Milo and Katherine send a violent and bloody message of their intention to annihilate the unit and everyone in it, Sonny has one last task to accomplish before the unit is ready to fight. He needs to help Esmeralda “Essie” Cannon move past her dark and violent history, so she can face the enemy beside them. But helping someone else often means sharing more of yourself than you are comfortable with. Sonny will have to face some of his own demons if he’s to help Essie confront hers.

This is hands-down my favorite Indie Paranormal series, and one of my very favorite vampire series, ever. These books go down like dark chocolate or really fine wine.... simple, sweet, and with a taste that energizes and lingers in the best ways. While they are an indie series, the books are incredibly well written and professionally edited. You'd never know they weren't bestsellers, in other words. The characters are brilliant. These are people you know, you love, and ok... occasionally they'll remind you of the people who irk the crap out of you. But always, they are vivid and realistic and driven by oh so human desires and motivations. The fact that most of them happen to have fangs is almost secondary to the hyper-realistic 'human' details. Really a worthwhile series, and definitely the best kind of 'happily ever after' books, which is amazing since they're urban fantasy as well as being incredibly realistic. I just REALLY dig these books, and am anxiously awaiting Lynne Scott's (aka L. Scott's) next installment in the series. If you're a fan of epic true love in a gritty fantasy backdrop, wrought with hyper-realism, you've gotta give these books a read. And if, like me, you were tired to death of the same old vampire stories, these might just renew your faith in the genre.
