this is pretty much a three-star series across the board. it's perfectly enjoyable escapist fun perfect for summertime adults, reluctant reader teens, or YA aftermath novel completists. the writing and characters can be a little doofy at times, and there's some overexplication and repetition that gets irritating, but it has a refreshing racial diversity, an emphasis on family, including circumstantial rather than blood-family, and it doesn't shy away from teen sexuality/pregnancy, rape or substance abuse.
this third volume is probably the most intense, in terms of situation, but also the doofiest.
this time, the narration is split between dean and josie.
quick recap of events: megatsunami triggers chemical spill causing blood type-specific symptoms in people ranging from blisters to uncontrollable rage. teens and younger children survive in a superstore; half of the group leaves store to head to airport/evacuation point. one girl - the nurturing josie - sacrifices herself to her type-o rage to save others from a maniac and then runs off while the rest of the group, including her boyfriend niko, continue to the safety of the airport, send help back to the group still in the store, and they evacuate to canada. josie is presumed lost until niko sees a picture of her in a newspaper that shows her locked up in a detention center in missouri, being beaten by a guard.
so, josie is in this camp, where she again finds herself surrounded by a group of younger children, but this time out she's decided she's not going to risk losing everyone she cares about again, so she has decided to shut herself off emotionally, and squash all her maternal impulses. the camp is full of gangs of type o's, which basically means a teenage girl, and many very young children, have been locked up with people who have the highest propensity towards violence, including sexual violence. to get to their designated quarters josie, and all these other young children, must pass through the men's wing, where only some of the doors lock. and even without the uncontrollable violence type o's manifest upon exposure to the chemicals remaining in the air, a lot of these men are just plain violent assholes cooped up against their wills with no outlets or diversions who are all too ready to see a young girl as a target. which makes for a tension-riddled situation, but it also stretches credulity. the men are dangerous, the guards sadistic, and josie's basically a shell - living without feeling.
meanwhile, dean is at a much nicer refugee camp in vancouver, despite the fact that he is also type o. because canada is nicer in general.
I heard a joke here, Q: "How do you get 100 Canadians out of a pool?" A: "Would everyone please exit the swimming pool?"
he's busy dealing with astrid's pregnancy and his presumed future nominal fatherhood by wallowing in jealousy and insecurity and having little tantrum-bickers with jake, the biological father. which is doofy, and why 16-year-olds shouldn't have kids. so while jake and dean try to score points off each other for astrid's affection by being overprotective and treating her like a helpless child, and jake overcomes his pill addiction by turning to alcohol instead, things are getting tense in love triangle land. and then they learn that many of the other pregnant women at the camp have suddenly disappeared, being taken out drugged by soldiers.
when niko shows them the paper proving josie is alive and in trouble, the four of them decide to leave the relative safety of canada and head to missouri to rescue josie and eventually make their way to niko's uncle's farm in pennsylvania. it's a dangerous enough journey to make without a pregnant teenage girl, with rumors of chemical drifts still affecting the area and causing folks to become symptomatic, as well as the type o's still on the loose with guns and blind rage, and the soldiers looking to contain the affected population. but nothing ventured, nothing gained.
so, yeah, it's wildly unrealistic, and all the astrid/dean/jake stuff gets old real fast, but there are some great action sequences, and some comic relief in young max's stories of his family, which he doesn't realize are mostly about prostitution, recounted to an aghast audience. adorable!
and a post-apocalyptic denny's, still maintaining that friendly façade.

4.5 apocalyptic stars
Dean, Alex, Astrid, Niko, Jake, Sahalia, Chloe, Batiste, Max, Ulysses, Caroline, and Henry are in Quilchena refugee camp. Josie is still missing, or dead. Niko searches for her name and face everywhere he goes. Then, he finds her. She’s with Mario. But she’s being held against her will. They must join forces to get to her...
Meanwhile, Josie simultaneously finds out about the Monument 14 gang. She believes they aren't looking for her, as they think she is deceased. Josie is with Mario in a type “O” containment camp. Life there is rough, there’s very little food and medical care, and she has to pass by a corridor of men every morning and night...
Dean is fairly content with life at Quilchena, there’s food, water, medical care, a clean place to sleep, and a place to shower. And they're mostly all together. But not all is as it seems. Astrid hears rumours that pregnant O’s are being taken while they sleep. Astrid has a hard time convincing anyone, but eventually she gets through to them. But will they be able to escape the soldiers that are there for her?
I have been waiting eight months for Savage Drift to be released. And I'm only slightly disappointed about it. I don't know what, but there seemed to be something missing throughout, I can't pinpoint it, but it's there.
There are two POV's which are Josie's and Dean's. I am not a huge fan of multiple POV'S but it seems to work for this series. They are both easy to separate, knowing what's going on with each person without getting muddled, possibly because the scenarios are so dissimilar to each other.
The first part is pretty slow, but then it recovers and goes faster. Savage Drift is written fairly well, although I didn't like the exclamation marks, which were randomly added to add emphasis on irrelevant points.
Also, I found no references to God in the main body, but there is some in the epilogue. Seen as it was left out of the main body, I don't see why it had to be included in the epilogue. And that
Niko is making his way to Josie...
Dean and Astrid are But on the way they are alerted to an unexpected item in the boot and they must take it back. But when they do Astrid ...
Josie is in the and she wants to get out. They want But Josie knows the odds aren't looking good for her if she does. She is then Niko is brought to her, and they rekindle...
I really liked this book, and the whole series to be exact, with an average of 4.83 for all three (not including the novellas). And I most certainly recommend for you to read!

He kisses me hard and we lie back on the bed. We are kissing and crying and I am learning that bodies can express what words cannot. I see his hands are shaking as he lifts his shirt over his head. Mine are, too, as I unsnap my thin blue gown. The air makes my skin prickle in goose bumps, then Niko lies down on me and our bodies warm each other. We melt together.
His hands are tentative at first, but we find our way.
I really liked this book, and the whole series to be exact, with an average of 4.83 for all three (not including the novellas). And I most certainly recommend for you to read!

OMG an amazing ending to an incredible series.
but I must confess - PLEASE PLEASE Emmy Laybourne, I need one more novella.
You know what I'm talking about. You left one huge huge huge cliffhanger. ONE unresolved issue. And I NEED closure!! PLEASE!!
Anyway, this book is almost all that you hope for. Short of that one little unresolved part, this is everything I'd hoped for. I can finally put Dean, Astrid, Niko, Alex, Josie, Chloe and all the others away.
This was action packed, back to back "OMG!" and just absolutely un-put-down-able. If I hadn't desperately needed sleep I would have read all night. This is a series to read and read again.
Now....if we can get someone to buy the movie rights, I'd love to see it too :)

This book was the best one in the series, but that doesn't really say a lot.
The main problems I had were the same as before - lack of emotion, no connection to the characters, no build-up to anything ever.
Also, the main character was ridiculously jealous in this one, it was incredibly annoying.
I was often left confused, because characters weren't properly introduced and systems (i.e. the prison) not explained well enough.
The ending was too rushed and seemed far too unrealistic.
I'm just glad I'm done with reading, to be honest...

LOVED this finale! I've enjoyed this trilogy from the very beginning, it's easy to read and there's a nice mix of characters with plenty of action and a different take on the chemical-release apocalypse story. This third and final instalment is very different from the first two, but still fits nicely as part of the whole. It's somehow darker and more mature, like the story has had some growth and development along with the characters. There's maybe one or two too many coincidences to be plausible but this is still probably one of my favourite series ever.

Fantastic finale to the Monument 14 trilogy. This one told from the perspective of Dean and Josie. It is heartbreaking to see the conditions the refugees have to deal with especially in the O blood-type camp. Makes you think of our modern-day prisons and their concentrated populations of violent personalities.
Laybourne does a wonderful job of tying this up with a rather neat bow without being sappy or sugarcoating the conditions these kids have to deal with. This was definitely the best of the three.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. I really wanted to like it, but there was a lot of whining and a lot of bitchiness and a lot of repetition.
I didn't really care what was happening to Josie, so her POVs didn't interest me. Especially with the constant maybe-threat of rape. After a couple of those, I just started skimming her side.
It got interesting near the end, when there was about 30 pages to go. By then it was too little too late. The epilogue was nice, but I'm just not sure this series needed to be a trilogy.

This was an awesome conclusion to the series! Honestly, the whole series rocked from beginning to end. It felt like a very long book that was broke up into 3 parts, that's how seamless the story is from book to book. You don't see that a lot, so I really loved that aspect! Although I think the ending might have been a bit unrealistic, who cares? I loved it, and was so happy that some of these characters got a HEA :)

This wasn’t the best thing I’ve ever read, but it was still good and I’d recommend it. It was a nice filler book that I read while I was waiting to get the books I actually really wanted to read.

As hard as it is to say goodbye to a beloved trilogy (and it seems we’ve been doing it quite often lately) the Monument kids have certainly earned their happy ending. Although it’s not without its problems, Savage Drift is a worthy conclusion to Laybourne’s post-apocalyptic work, a book that inspires both admiration and a healthy dose of introspection.
Laybourne’s version of the apocalypse was never too difficult to imagine, which made it stand out among others of the same genre. In Savage Drift she completed the picture by finally showing us a disturbingly believable reaction by the government, all things we could easily imagine happening to us if disaster struck. The things she chose to do, and especially things that happened to Josie, were horrifying and thought provoking, and they’ll stay with me for quite a while.
This final book is told from two perspectives: this time, Dean shares the narration with Josie, our type O self-sacrificing young heroine. Unfortunately, being inside Dean’s head wasn’t nearly as enjoyable as it was before. The sardonic voice we appreciated so much in the previous installments was lost in favor of jealous rambling and childish behavior. Somewhere along the line, he became almost obsessed with Astrid, who is pregnant with Jake, and the jealousy turned him into someone far less likeable. He handled the entire situation like one would expect from a 16-year-old, which would be perfectly fine, were he not fighting for fatherhood, a task he most certainly wasn’t up to. By the time we reached the last page, we still weren’t convinced that he’s mature enough to handle the responsibilities he was so determined to take on.
While Dean managed to alienate us with his jealous behavior, Josie’s story provoked a completely different reaction. Imprisoned in a camp for people with O blood type and stripped of her rights, this brave young girl gave up on ever finding a normal life for herself. Her plight was devastating to behold, but her defiance and strength were truly remarkable.
While Monument 14 isn’t the best post-apocalyptic YA trilogy out there, it’s thought provoking and riveting, which makes it worth your time.

Wow, wow, wow! I'm obsessed with this series and am going to be going through major "book series hangover". I picked up book 1 three days ago and literally could not stop reading this series. I grumbled when my brain made me stop to sleep and again when I had to work (although I did manage to leave work a little early just to read!)
I couldn't get enough of these characters - Dean, Alex, Niko, Josie, Astrid and all the little kids. Or of this world and story. Josie's chapters were absolutely heartbreaking.
I was very happy and satisfied with the ending! Well done Ms. Laybourne!

Der Untertitel beantwortet ja eigentlich schon alle Fragen, doch ich wollte das Buch natürlich trotzdem noch lesen.
Dieses Mal lesen wir abwechselnd aus der Sicht von Dean und Josie. Nachdem Josie nämlich zum Nuller wurde, um ihre Freunde vor einem gefährlichen Soldaten zu beschützen, wurde sie in ein Internierungslager gebracht, in dem ausschließlich Nuller gefangen gehalten werden. Naja, ausschließlich ist nicht ganz so richtig, denn eine Ausnahme gibt es: Mario Scietto, der bereits Alex und den anderen geholfen hatte und sich nun um Josie kümmert. Die Zustände in diesem Lager sind echt grausig, gerade als Frau sollte man aufpassen, wohin man geht und mit wem man sich anlegt. Dadurch, dass Josie drei Tage lang ungeschützt dem Giftgas ausgesetzt war, hat sie sich verändert. Sie ist längst nicht mehr so positiv eingestellt und versucht auch, ihre Gefühle größtenteils irgendwo zu begraben.
Dean und seine Freunde sind inzwischen im sicheren Kanada in einem Flüchtlingslager untergekommen. Doch seitdem Niko Josie und Mario auf einem Foto in der Zeitung gesehen hat und weiß, dass sie eingesperrt ist, will er sie unbedingt retten.
Dazu kommt noch, dass Astrid vor gruseligen Versuchen der Regierung an schwangeren Frauen fliehen muss. Also machen sich Dean, Niko, Astrid und Jake auf den Weg zurück in die USA.

Josie tat mir oft schrecklich leid. Die Zustände in diesem Lager waren wirklich schrecklich und ich habe die ganze Zeit darauf gehofft, dass Niko sie da raus holt.
Das Ende war wieder total spannend und ich konnte gar nicht schnell genug weiterlesen. Der Epilog hat mich absolut zufrieden gestellt und ich konnte das Buch mit einem guten Gefühl wieder ins Regal stellen.

Dieses Mal lesen wir abwechselnd aus der Sicht von Dean und Josie. Nachdem Josie nämlich zum Nuller wurde, um ihre Freunde vor einem gefährlichen Soldaten zu beschützen, wurde sie in ein Internierungslager gebracht, in dem ausschließlich Nuller gefangen gehalten werden. Naja, ausschließlich ist nicht ganz so richtig, denn eine Ausnahme gibt es: Mario Scietto, der bereits Alex und den anderen geholfen hatte und sich nun um Josie kümmert. Die Zustände in diesem Lager sind echt grausig, gerade als Frau sollte man aufpassen, wohin man geht und mit wem man sich anlegt. Dadurch, dass Josie drei Tage lang ungeschützt dem Giftgas ausgesetzt war, hat sie sich verändert. Sie ist längst nicht mehr so positiv eingestellt und versucht auch, ihre Gefühle größtenteils irgendwo zu begraben.
Dean und seine Freunde sind inzwischen im sicheren Kanada in einem Flüchtlingslager untergekommen. Doch seitdem Niko Josie und Mario auf einem Foto in der Zeitung gesehen hat und weiß, dass sie eingesperrt ist, will er sie unbedingt retten.
Dazu kommt noch, dass Astrid vor gruseligen Versuchen der Regierung an schwangeren Frauen fliehen muss. Also machen sich Dean, Niko, Astrid und Jake auf den Weg zurück in die USA.

Savage Drift is the final book in the Monument 14 trilogy and I must say I'm fairly happy with the way everything was wrapped up. For some reason though I've always found it difficult to rate this series because whilst I like the characters and the plot, I just wish more happened over the course of the three books. Savage Drift definitely had more going on than the previous book in the series, Sky On Fire, so the series did end on a slight high.
This installment is told from two very different perspectives, Dean and Josie. Josie's perspective was particularly scary and without her chapters I don't think I would have bothered finishing this series. She's crammed into an overcrowded concentration camp type prison. There's no respect for human life, no dignity and everything's dirty. And whilst I enjoyed Josie's perspective I did not like Josie herself. I couldn't relate to her at all because she showed a complete lack of empathy for the children she should be helping to care for. She refused to comfort them which I found odd considering how she was in the first two books.

His chapters do quite quickly become more interesting though as early on Astrid, who's pregnant, starts having health problems. This was my least favourite book of the series, and I got so bored.
The characters in this book continued to be stupid and to make poor decisions. They had obviously learned nothing during the course of the three books, and just thought they could go off crusading and do whatever they liked, and everything would be okay. Wrong.
The storyline in this just bored me. Very little seemed to happen, and I just lost interest. The characters made stupid decision, Astrid didn’t even seem to think about the effects of the exposure to the gas might have on her baby, Josie’s story bored me, and I just wanted to get to the end as soon as possible.
The ending was then a ‘happily ever after’ sort of thing, but I wasn’t really sold on it.

Savage Drift was the worst one in the series.
The characters didn't improve from the last book.
They were still pretty stupid, and most of the time they really annoyed me.
The pacing in this one was slow. The other two were slow as well, but they weren't as bad as this.
I am so glad that the series is over now! I don't think i could have gone through another book with these characters.

Yeah took me a long tym to finish this one. Frankly speaking,though all of the Labourne material was present it seemed a kind of dull to me comparing to the previous ones. the story and the pace was fast as expected but it could be more fun. The charecters were more matured and raw to there bones this tym as they were finally fighting for keeping what theyvgot after the drift. Not a great finale to a great series but somehow acceptable.

Doteď příliš nechápu, proč jsem se na trojku Monumentu 14 vrhl až skoro dva roky po čtení jeho prvních dvou dílů. Na těch úvodních stranách to byla tak trochu nostalgie, znovu se ponořit po té době do tohoto příběhu :D A ponořit se do něj už naposledy, což mě teď celkem i mrzí, protože je to vážně výborná série. Akce a napětí na každé stránce, dobře vymyšlený postapo svět a dramatické scény plné citu. Za mě obrovská spokojenost, a hrozně rád si ji někdy v budoucnu přečtu znovu.

So another great series that I loved have ended. The Monument 14agers' (fourTEENAGERS), this come from the book, actually, journey have ended and were concluded in a great way.
The last book in the Monument 14 trilogy started where the epilogue of the second book have left. (There's a letter about the Monument 14 at the start, written by Alex which he believes could help to be reunited by their family.)
Like the previous book, Sky on Fire, it is told in two alternating POVs.
Dean
So Dean, our narrator even from the start ( Monument 14) told the story beginning from their perfect lives at their camp. The little kids reunited with their parents/being adopted by the others' parents and the air is clear of the chemicals that once make them go crazy, bleed to death (blisters), bloodthirsty murder and made them infertile. But rumors of drifts (like the title says) started to come around, some chemicals are still in the air and appearing in some places. But the drifts are not the only rumors that are spreading, but the pregnant woman who is exposed to chemicals will be sent to USAMRIID for some testing. And this made pregnant Astrid paranoid, a paranoid O.
The four of them, Dean, Astrid (and the rapid-growing baby), Jake and Niko journeyed to free Josie from the O-camp. (I wished Alex have another POV since he wouldn't know what would happen to him and the other members of Monument 14. But the epilogue will say what their fates would be.) And of course along the way they encounter obstacles (yeah, of course going to the O easy will be boring) like the drifts, (and if there are drifts) some savage Os and people that will help them along the way.
Josie
So the presumed dead and O-Josie is stuck in the O-camp with the AB-Mario Scietto, who Alex and the others met on the previous book. She also met some new friends in the camp. But her character changed from a caring one to a I-killed-someone-so-I-am-bad-and-others-must-keep-away-from-me caring one. But life in the O-camp is hard, with limited resources and some enemies that made not only her but also Mario and her newfound friends' lives harder.

I got to say the last few chapters have more story to tell but it is cut really, really short and are stuffed for about 5 or 6 chapters.

Happy Ending. Maybe too happy ending, for a post-apocalyptic novel. But I'm still glad for the characters And Astrid's name for her baby is a bit ridiculous and cool at the same time.

Co uděláte, když přežijete zdánlivý konec světa, po všech útrapách se konečně dostanete na bezpečné místo, ale pak zjistíte, že člověk, o němž jste si mysleli, že zemřel, aby vám zachránil život, je naživu, ale nejspíš to tak moc dlouho být nemusí? Niko se rozhodl.
Půjde a Josie, dívku, do níž se zamiloval a která pro ně chtěla položit život, z ostře hlídaného a nebezpečného tábora zachrání. Jenže Josie o tom nemá ani ponětí. Myslí si, že na ni už všichni zapomněli a po tom, co provedla, už ani pořádně nemá důvod žít. Své staré já zabila ve stejnou chvíli, kdy zabila vojáka, který ohrožoval její přátele.
Mezitím musí Dean s Astrid řešit její blížící se porod. Zdá se, že jsou v kanadském táboře v bezpečí, ale Astrid je znepokojená tím, že všechny těhotné ženy z tábora pomalu mizí. Vypadá to, že je posílají na vědecké pokusy a žádná z nich se už do tábora nevrací. Musí tedy rychle jednat, jinak ji čeká stejný osud. A Dean udělá všechno pro to, aby byla jeho milovaná dívka i její dítě v bezpečí. I kdyby to mělo znamenat, že bude muset vydržet cestu s Jakem a s nekončícími myšlenkami na to, že jej Astrid přece jen brzy opustí a vybere si raději Jakea.
Série Monument 14 se rozhodně řadí mezi to kvalitnější, co se na náš knižní trh pro dospívající dostává. Co kvalitnější, je to naprostá bomba! A to doslova! Je škoda, že hrajou prim spíš celosvětově úspěšnější dystopie a tahle postapokalyptická série je spíš schovaná a ví o ni jen pár těch vyvolených, které zaujala na první pohled hlavně svými obálkami.
Na všech knihách Emmy Laybourne je znát, že má velký cit pro drama a překvapivé situace, nikdy si tak nemůžete být jistí, jestli zrovna ta a tamta postava přežije, i když se třeba jedná o hlavní postavy, nebo si myslíte, že tohle by přece čtenářům neudělala. Věřte mi, že udělala... opakovaně. Líbí se mi, že jsou všechny její postavy rozmanité a vy si často kladete otázku, jestli jsou dobré nebo zlé a jestli ještě vůbec něco jako dobro a zlo existuje.
Dějově si rozhodně nebere servítky a i když je to série určená spíše dospívajícím, je to často pořádný krvák, z něhož by byl opravdu výborný film (doufejme, že se jej tedy nakonec opravdu dočkáme, už se prý pracuje na scénáři prvního filmu). Nebojí se zacházet do detailů a psát syrově o věcech, o nichž většinou vědět nechceme, přesto víme, že se dějí a v podobné situaci by se také nejspíš děly. Vulgárnost, sex, drogy, alkohol, násilí a vraždy, to všechno ve spojení s mládeží se v knihách příliš nenosí - o to lepší celé to čtení pak je.
Osobně mám sérii velice ráda a myslím si, že patří k těm top, které ve vás po dočtení něco zanechají. S koncem jsem spokojená, i když bych Astrid někdy raději vlepila facku... mám prostě pro Deana slabost a patří k mým nejoblíbenějším postavám. Těším se na autorčiny další knihy, nedávno vydala Sweet, která je dějově opět pěkně dramatická a věřím, že se mi bude líbit.

Okay, I'm going to start with my biggest gripe with this series: the "day 29" stuff on the bottom of each page. Yes, it was great to have a timeline in the first book to see just how quickly the world is going to hell in a handbasket. But here? Here, it was actually detrimental to my enjoyment of the story. Because I kept being all "Um. It's day 31 and not only have they all been evacuated to refugee camps in Canada, but the government have managed to implement an entire system of fuel rationing AND establish containment camps for type Os AND managed to procure thousands of safety suits with inbuilt gas masks AND managed to distribute those suits all over the midwest AND start disappearing pregnant women in the middle of the night for secret military testing??? AND there's been enough time for the type Os in the containment camps to have formed gangs capable of strong arming people out of their rations?? Uh, okay."
I mean, I get that it's an emergency situation and that there are certain pieces of red tape that can be bypassed under such conditions. But if you've EVER spent any time working in a government agency, you'll know that you basically have to fill out a form in triplicate to take a pen from the stationery cupboard. I call bullshit on all of that being in place inside of a month, especially when internet access is down.
Like, there was literally no reason for this entire trilogy to take place within the space of five weeks. None. And there were actually a few things that didn't even make sense, because I'm pretty sure in book 2, Astrid said she was three months pregnant, and then all of a sudden here she's 28 weeks pregnant and it just...yeah. The whole thing would have been better without those pesky dates in the bottom corner.
Anyway. I think I would have preferred this if it had just been Josie's narrative rather than being split between Josie and Dean. Because Dean's about as exciting as watching paint dry, and reading about this sixteen year old kid refer to the pregnant-by-someone-else girl he's been dating for like two weeks as "my (someday soon) wife" is just...NO. STOP. But Josie's story was compelling and edge-of-your-seat-y and generally much more interesting than Dean's.
That aside, the whole thing felt a little rushed. The drifts were never sufficiently explained, they were just BECAUSE THAT'S WHY-ed. There was never any conclusion with them either. Just as things were getting interesting with the drifts and with Josie being able to control herself when in an O rage, it was time for a happily ever after epilogue. Which, WHAT.
Basically, this book needed at least a hundred pages less Dean and a hundred pages more explanation and world building.
That said, I did have to snigger when Dean used "Sam" as a fake name. Because obviously.

Savage Drift, the third book in the Monument 14 series, brings us right back to all the danger of the first two books.
(spoilers from Monument 14 and Sky on Fire are inevitable, so be warned.)
The feeling of safety in the refugee camp in Canada at the end of Sky on Fire doesn't last long in Savage Drift. We find out in the first few pages that Josie is alive and is being held in Missouri at a camp for Type Os. They are not being treated well, so Niko is determined to leave immediately to save her. We get a dual narration, by Dean and Josie, and Josie's story about life at Mizzou, is truly harrowing.
Astrid is frightened because pregnant women are disappearing from the camp. She is having cramping, but refuses to go to the clinic because she is afraid she will be taken away by the military for medical experimentation. Dean can't believe this, and finally convinces her to go, only to find out Astid was not at all incorrect.
With the help of a lot of people, a group of them are on the run across country again. Jake, Astrid, and Dean trying desperately to get to Niko's uncle's farm in Pennsylvania, and Niko heading for Missouri. The route, as to be expected, is circuitous.The excitement never lets up. There are rumors of "drifts" -- clouds of chemicals that drift through the air causing the same symptoms that we learned about in Monument 14. While the travelers don't want to believe this, it turns out these drifts will add to the danger and excitement.
They do get a lot of help, and they do meet many severe challenges. The resolutions sometime seemed a bit contrived; every time there seems to be no hope, something extraordinary happens to save the day. But I'm still glad that the ending made me feel good.
Savage Drift is a great survival story about teens that just refuse to give up no matter what. I really became attached to the characters and pulled for them. Even some of the new characters quickly became important to me. The brisk pace won't let you stop turning the pages.
If you've read the first two books, you must not miss Savage Drift. If you haven't started the Monument 14 series, it is definitely worth your time. These are great survival stories to recommend to reluctant readers, and they will appeal to both boys and girls.

Savage Drift is a great survival story about teens that just refuse to give up no matter what. I really became attached to the characters and pulled for them. Even some of the new characters quickly became important to me. The brisk pace won't let you stop turning the pages.
If you've read the first two books, you must not miss Savage Drift. If you haven't started the Monument 14 series, it is definitely worth your time. These are great survival stories to recommend to reluctant readers, and they will appeal to both boys and girls.

This conclusion to the Monument 14 trilogy is told from two points of view - Dean's and Josie's. After going through unimaginable difficulties after some horrendous storms caused the release of some secret military chemicals, the majority of the kids have reached the relative safety of a refugee camp in Canada. Conditions aren't terrible but there is so much uncertainty. Most of the kids, including Dean and his brother Alex, don't know if their parents survived or where they are.
Dean is worried about Astrid who is pregnant and isn't doing well. Rumors are that the American military are taking pregnant women who have been exposed to the chemicals and doing some kind of experiments on them. Despite needing medical attention, Astrid won't go to the doctors for fear of being taken. Dean also has to deal with Astrid's mixed feelings for the father of her baby and former boyfriend Jake. Jake is dealing with the uncertainty by drinking and using any kind of drug he can find.
When Niko hears that Josie didn't die but was rather taken to a refuged camp in Missouri, he is determined to go to her and take her to his uncle's farm in Pennsylvania. That farm has been an object of hope for many of the kids who haven't found their parents. It is a goal that they are trying for in the hopes of having a better life. When it becomes apparent that Astrid's danger is real, the father of the twins agrees to help the kids - Niko, Dean, Astrid, and Jake - sneak out of the camp to try to get to Josie.
Josie really does need rescuing. She has been imprisoned in a camp full of Os. They don't have enough food, clothing, or any other supplies. Some of the men have formed into gangs preying on the others and have made Josie a particular target. Josie has also drawn the negative attention of a particularly sadistic guard.
The group from Canada has a number of adventures on their way to Josie and, when they do get together, the situation is really tense and dangerous. My only complaint about the story was the ending which I felt was a little rushed and a little too coincidental.
Fans of post-apocalyptic fiction will enjoy this trilogy. It is filled with interesting characters and exciting situations.

In the Book Monument 14: Savage Drift, by Emmy Laybourne, picks up from the second in the series of three. The story begins where it left off, in a Canadian refugee camp with a group of kids just trying to live normal lives. Some with their parents they found, others were not so lucky. But soon the luck changes for the leader of the group, Niko, who finds out that his girlfriend, who ran away in the previous book because she became an “O” monster, was being held in a type O blood type containment center. So from their the adventure begins.
Niko tries to escape their refugee camp and succeeds with the help of the Air force pilot and father of the kindergarteners that they had rescued in the second book, and three of his friends Jake, Dean, and Astrid, who is pregnant and wanted for testing. The pilot gets them as far as he a can but from their they hitch hike and make their own way. The only things that keep standing in their way are the encounters to the Drifts that had been rumors but they now know they aren’t. The drifts are moving clouds of compounds that take down towns one at a time and the group encounters them more than once. Eventually they are able to get Niko’s girlfriend, Josie, with the unexpected help of a drift. in the end the group is able to make it to their final destination, Niko’s uncle's farm where they are able to bring back all the members of their new family. Dean and his brother are also able to locate their parents and and live the rest of their lives as a real family again.

I would say this book would be a good read for anyone who wants to be filled with action, adventure and an exciting plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

MY THOUGHTS: ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT
Dean, Alex and the younger kids have been safe at the camp near Vancouver, but they still want to find Josie after Niko discovers that she is still alive. Astrid is experiencing difficulties in her pregnancy but fears going to the doctor there since she has heard rumors of pregnant girls just disappearing. To save Astrid from medical experimentation, the boys devise a plan and with the help of the twins' father, the escape the camp and venture back into the states.
I love that the story alternates between the different points of view of each character and Josie, in her exile as a type O monster, shows that her compassion goes beyond being a prisoner in a sea of monsters. The chemicals have morphed into a dust cloud that drifts into areas that weren't previously effected. As Jake, Astrid and Dean travel south to reach safety for the baby, Niko sets off on his own to find Josie. This part of the story becomes extremely exciting as you wonder if the group will survive the chemicals and circumstances to save Josie.
Rarely do I get an ending that I wanted but still was a bit surprised at how it ended. That is exactly what happened to me in this conclusion of the Monument 14 series. The whole cast of characters are so accessible and it is heartening that these teens try to do what is right. Fans of dystopian stories are going to enjoy this one immensely. You do need to read the first two books in the series since each builds on the other. Parents: There is some violence, alcohol abuse and minor sexual situations.

This was a chore to read, unfortunately. I liked the first two well enough, but this one dragged. I don't know if maybe it is because I listened to the first two on audio and read this one.
The dual POVs didn't really work as well with this book. I didn't quite care enough about either one to ever get fully invested. I also thought the whole pregnancy thing was ridiculous. Two teenage boys fighting for the right to parent a teenage girl's baby? Okay. I'm sure the whole point was how things change in a post-apocalyptic setting, but the glorification of teenage pregnancy was eyeroll-worthy.
The ending was weird, too. It wrapped up super quickly and way too neatly.
I like the author and I will definitely read more of her work, but Savage Drift was a miss.

Wow... such a magnificent ending to one of the most amazing series I have ever read.
It broke my heart because of all the seriously messed up situations they were in. One depressing scene after another made it hard to imagine even a slight possible chance for a happy ending. Emotional was an understatement.
I'm glad to say that the ending was more than satisfying. Everything fell into place beautifully, all wrapped up in one powerful ending. I was left with a smile on my face.
This series is definitely a must read. If you haven't started yet, you probably need to now.
