📚 Book Review by R.M. Campbell 📚 Murder Most Scenic By Nellie H. Steele
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Murder Most Scenic is Book 2 in the Great Maine Mysteries series and continues with Emily Harper’s search for the truth about her sister’s death, still not convinced that her sister, Becky's, fall down the grand staircase was an accident. Recovering from solving a murder in a local lighthouse, Emily soon experiences a vision of another lighthouse, the Bass Harbor Lighthouse, and another murder victim. With the help of two friends, Bill and Martha, Emily begins her investigation of Linda’s death and soon finds that she is connected to her sister, a sinister plot, and a villainous plot, and people who will go to any extent to find a hidden treasure. I thought this story was captivating, with a well-written plot, interesting characters, great intercharacter relationships, and a cat who stole the show. Nellie intertwined very dangerous and tense scenes with highly emotional and clever dialogue to keep the reader transfixed to the story. The story had a steady pace, with suspense, tension, danger, and even hints of romance that compelled me to keep reading. The author’s use of a vision-enhancing bracelet and a mysterious locket adds to the mystery of the story and the element of paranormal activity. I totally enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.
I enjoyed the first book "Murder Most Eastern" very much. The loved the scenery, and the idea of the series. Intrigued by where it might go. However, I found "Murder Most Scenic" very predicable (I guess it should be considering it's more of a continuation of the first). There are even some re-used scenes from the first book. It's a fast read as a result. I will still read the rest of the series, but it's no longer a priority. The characters are still valid and interesting. I'll check in with them after a little break.
A decent paranormal cozy mystery with a cat. As in the first book, the number of ways the main character can exhale in a single chapter, never mind the entire book is irritating as all get-out. I searched “breath” on my kindle and came up with 75 times in a 200page book. The author needs to find additional ways to describe the character’s stress.
Book two and it did not disappoint and nor do any of Nellie Steele’s books! I am immediately heading to book three, and ongoing mystery and murder along with the new friends I have made in Maine!
Emily and friends found a compass in a lighthouse. Looking into another lighthouse for a sextant but it was somewhere else. With two of the items and two more to go if they don’t get killed first.
While I enjoyed the scenic aspects involved with the lighthouse and the mystery of items that together will unlock something great, the dithering of the lead, Emily Harper became tiring.
The story line and characters are great. These are a quick entertaining read. Not tons of depth in the story line or the characters and no follow up on the killers motive, partners, etc.
