I can save her from the auction. But no one can save her from me…
For decades, my family and the Morgans have auctioned off women to the highest bidder. I worked against them in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to end it all. To end them, then start over somewhere else. Alone.
Until my son chose Ophelia to be the one he’d trick into being his girlfriend. The woman he’d put up for auction. My obsession.
Ophelia is beautiful. Innocent. Too good to be kidnapped and sold off. Way too good to be with a heartless man like me.
I should let the men I hired take her away from all of this. It’s the right thing to do.
Except right or wrong doesn’t matter when it comes to her. Nothing matters other than having her. I’ll pay any price to be the highest bidder. She is going to be mine. My captive. My property. My woman.
I’ll kill anyone who tries to take her from me. Anyone. Even my own son.
Auctioned is an extra spicy, dark age-gap romance that can be read as a standalone. The path to happily ever after isn’t easy, but it is there. Please check for full content disclaimer at the beginning of the book or on my website.

when your ex-boyfriend’s dad buys you at an auction and you realize how deep his obsession goes 🤭
SOMEONE SEDATE ME IMMEDIATELY eva once again has me by the actual throat because this book just EATS 🤩 thank you so much for giving me the chance to arc read !!
“this is not love, it’s obsession.”
this is a dark ex-boyfriend’s dad romance, innocent fmc, virgin auction, hidden agenda, daddy kink, bdsm, captive, primal play, touch her and die, non / dub con, breeding kink, “beg for it”, standalone, duo pov 💜
ophelia never knew what world she was stepping into when she first started dating topher. she wanted to give him a chance and explore but after a few tries she just knew there wasn’t a connection or any chemistry between them. she doesn’t get fluster or feel butterflies in her tummy like she does when she’s with his father, james 🥰 and this man is DARK !! he is deep in the virgin auction business. it’s been a part of his life ever since his father pushed him into it. the legacy runs far and deep. so when it comes time for his son, topher to follow the tradition, james has lost all hope to saving his son. he’s in too deep. he doesn’t care about anyone but himself. although james is also a part of the auction, he has a dark secret 👀 he’s been working to take down the auction and it’s traditions. he’s been trying to help the girls that were tricked into this auction and at the same time protecting himself. that is until ophelia ends up being the next sacrifice 😳 james was always obsessed with her but he knew he couldn’t pursue her without dragging her into his mess. but he just had to have her. he needed to claim her. so … what happens when it comes time for her auction bidding and the highest bidder has rights to claim her 🤗
from the moment eva started talking about this i just knew it would have me in a chokehold (just like all her books) 🧎🏻♀️ i’m such a slut for forbidden romance, breeding kink, captive trope. and eva just writes some of the absolute BEST !! she literally makes red flags look green and suddenly i’m color blind 🫣 i absolutely love ophelia and james. they’re so hot and perfect for each other ❤️🔥 their chemistry is sooooo epic 😍 the way i was yearning for every single one of their interactions omg
What a wild ride! This book is dark, twisted, and downright delicious. I've been eager to read Eva Marks' work for ages, and I wish I hadn’t waited so long! This story is a DARK romance. While it might not be the darkest I've ever read, it’s certainly the most intense and spiciest one I’ve read this year, and I loved every moment of it. I seriously couldn't put it down; I just wanted to know what would happen next!
The story kicks off with Ophelia, who is about to break up with her boyfriend, Topher, during dinner with his father. But before she can get the words out, Topher announces that she’ll be auctioned off as a sacrifice to the highest bidder. Despite her best efforts to resist and escape, they overpower her and lock her up. What she soon realizes is that Topher isn't her biggest problem—it's James, Topher's father, who’s been quietly watching her with an obsessive interest.
James comes from a powerful family with some pretty twisted traditions. He runs the auction business and is known for being cold, detached, and ruthless. For years, he’s had only his plans in mind, willing to eliminate anyone who stands in his way, even his son. However, everything changes when he sees Ophelia; she captivates him in a way he never expected, and he becomes obsessed with her.
Ophelia, being an orphan without family ties, is seen as the perfect candidate for sacrifice. I admired her character—she’s fierce, brave, and tenacious. Even when she’s scared for her life, she continues to fight back and won’t let anyone see her vulnerable side. Her dynamic with James is complicated; she fears him and hates what he represents, but she also understands that she might be safest with him, as he’s fiercely protective.
Their relationship is anything but simple. James can be volatile and unhinged; he hates that Ophelia distracts him from his plan but also feels the need to claim her as his own. He has his dark moments, where he inflicts pain and humiliates her, but he also protects her and aids her in seeking revenge. At times, he can even be surprisingly sweet.
Ophelia, on the other hand, is bold enough to challenge him and finds herself drawn to his punishments. I loved witnessing her grow stronger and braver throughout the story. All in all, I loved this book and can’t wait to explore the author’s other works. If you’re a fan of dark romance like I am, I recommend giving this one a try—but be sure to check the trigger warnings before diving in!
This was a good start that seemed promising for a little dark romance.. hate to say it but this wasn’t dark and it came off almost cartoonish like an old black and white version of Batman or William Shatners acting in the original Star Trek. There’s human trafficking and a 2 family secret society vibe. It was just ott.
A dark and depraved romance. I devoured this book from beginning to end. I loved the age difference. The characters were well-written; I thoroughly enjoyed Ophelia and James.
This story is an absolute must-read! Its blend of dark themes and provocative elements creates a gripping experience that you won't want to put down. The taboo aspects add an extra layer of intrigue, while the surprising twists and turns keep you on the edge of your seat. Who can resist the excitement of an ex-boyfriend's dad trope? It's a thrilling ride from start to finish! I can't recommend this author highly enough—each of their books has captured my heart and guaranteed a fantastic escape into their world!
What a wild ride!! Ophelia’s ex-boyfriend’s dad buys her after she’s auctioned off and she learns just how obsessed he is and just how much he wants to break her and mold her into his property.
“I own you. You’re mine, and I’m yours. Forever. Say you understand.”
James is a sadistic and kinky bastard but he’s got a gooey spot for his sonnet. Ophelia is a bit of a lunatic but these two just work. Eva seamlessly wove their personalities and circumstances together in a tantalizing dance of ownership and possession.
Auctioned was an insane dark romance with twists and turns, a whole lot of filthy smut and a HEA that was well deserved. Eva does dark smut so well.
This book transcended all my wildest expectations in ways I never imagined! Eva skillfully crafts a new benchmark for unhinged characters that is simply exhilarating, and I find myself completely enamored with every facet of it! James isn’t just dark and seductive; he’s a tempestuous whirlwind of chaos and madness, leaving you both entranced and on the edge of your seat. His intense, volatile energy is utterly addictive! On the flip side, Ophelia is breathtakingly beautiful yet blissfully naive, possessing a quiet strength that drives her to push James further into his madness. This was an extraordinary read; I couldn't put it down.
I recommend it 💯 % Read the trigger warning ⚠️ 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️
4.5 ⭐️’s Auctioned was truly phenomenal. I was so excited, nervous, shocked and loved the book while reading it🫠
James, WHAT THE HECK YOU WEREN’T SUPPOSED TO BE THAT FINE. SORRY I’M GUILTY, GUILTY. You’re obviously a red flag and forbidden.. James is a sadistic bastard but he’s got a gooey spot for Ophelia and he has feelings for her while he’s searching.
I loved Ophelia so much. I say this all the time but she was literally so relatable in every way. I felt so bad for her because she was alone, even James couldn’t understand her sometimes, especially at the beginning of their relationship.
-No cheating -Lots of ow and om drama but MMC and FMC are always loyal to each other. -Non v H, no manho / v-h -Large age gap. -HEA 🤍 -Epilogue with marriage proposal.
Not going to lie, the first 150-200 pages were dark as fuck. Hot? Yes, but dark. You definitely have to check your triggers and enjoy the kinkier, darker side too.
I personally was a little shocked, but enjoyed it. James’s back and forth, his small range of emotions expanding and making him freak out in unhinged ways…all while needing to claim Ophelia as his own was entertaining and hot. How can he be so unhinged, so mean, so hot and cold and then be an awkward obsessed fucker that looks up how to dry her hair with hairdryer on YouTube? I loved how much his feelings evolved. I was so glad and happy to see that although he softened and cared for Ophelia, they maintained their filthy side. He also went from “my” to “our” in a heartbeat; he decided she was his, and from then on, everything he had was hers too. And don’t get me started on Chapter 34…that man has the weirdest moments of praise and confession, but he has a way with words. And Chapter 36? A banger. Honestly, all of the chapters had major stuff going on, whether it be spice or plot, or anything.
And Ophelia was everything I wanted from an FMC. She was feisty, talked back, stood her ground, and did everything to survive…and her darker side was enticing. She had a clear picture of what and who she wanted…even when that someone was once off limits and then turned into a captor. But what if your captor isn’t so bad? At times her justifications for James were reaching, like yeah, he’s not the antichrist, but he’s pretty damn mean and cruel, to you too. But kinks work in both their favor, because she loves the degradation, and he loves her tears. A match made in hell, or a cell if you will (best pun ever, amiright?)
I definitely wanted to see how and when James would put his plan, or his new 2.0 plan that now includes Ophelia, in motion. How did Oliver, Camden and Topher (disgusting fucking name ngl, sorry if your parents chose violence and put you this name) fit and would manifest in the end. And did that deliver. I loved how it resolved itself, and that epilogue was like a reward.
Quotes:
Sadly, my body doesn't care for rules, legacies, or restrictions. My goddamn heart is a rogue motherfucker.
There aren't enough words in the English language to describe her. An innocent seductress. A filthy angel. An infuriating distraction. Or maybe there is a word. Demise. My demise.
No idea where to go from here. What to do with her. Wait, I do. I know. She's mine. I'm keeping her.
"Your blood on my cock. Fuck, Ophelia. Fuck. I own you. Your pussy is mine. Your life is mine. You'll never be anyone else's. Fucking no one's."
"I can't imagine a life without you any more than I can imagine one without air."
"What an insolent piece of property I bought for myself."
When life gets dark, I'll have him at my side. Darker. Fiercer. Fucking insane. Mine. I'll make him mine.
"You want me that bad?" Every minute of every day. Being hard for so long is torture.
As if anything can help her against me. God himself could come down here, and I'd defile her in His presence. She's not His. Mine.
I'll die if that means saving her. I absolutely will.
"I wasn't lying before. I've been obsessed with you. Irrationally. Illogically so. Stalking you went against everything I believed in, just like owning you. It was a risk. I did it anyway."
She's a sonnet the universe wrote for me. A property I'm never selling.
Her words settle inside my heart. She's building a house there. A mansion. No plans to leave.
I'll do everything in my power for him too. To protect him, so he'll have everything.
"I own you. You're mine, and I'm yours. Forever. Say you understand." "I do. Forever."
Ophelia thought she had the perfect boyfriend until the night Topher told her she was being sold at an auction, thinking she misheard him, she realises he isn’t joking, and to make matters worse, his father James doesn’t stop what happens next, because Ophelia is about to be plunged down a rabbit hole, only when she emerges, she may not be the same person she was before she was claimed.
Only James’s obsession with Ophelia runs deeps, her beauty and innocence speaks to him, making him feral and obsessive, despite her pureness, he knows she’s too good to be with a heartless man like him. But in his world right or wrong doesn’t matter, because when it comes to her, nothing matters more than having her for himself. To own her, claim her, break and mould her into his image, to fulfil his wicked appetites.
For Ophelia’s life, James will pay any price, no one will come between his captive, his property, his woman, because Ophelia is going to be his in every sense of the word. And boy does James hold us to it.
The chemistry between them is electrifying. No matter how Ophelia fights James at every turn, she feels conflicted about her feelings for him, hating and loving what James does to her. Yet she finds herself confused as to why she responds to him the way she does, despite the age gap, being attracted to him is something she can no longer deny, especially when she learns that James is the one that now owns her wholly, completely and irrevocably.
James is dominant, controlling, over the top obsessive and possessive. Ophelia is sweet, fiery, sassy and gives James a run for his money. James is morally grey as he gets and he corrupts Ophelia oh so beautifully. When it comes to Ophelia every ounce of her pleasure belongs to James, she craves him and he will never deny her.
But James’s legacy runs far and deep, now that Topher has been inducted into the same legacy, he realises he made a mistake with Ophelia and starts pursuing her. Topher becomes unhinged and James has no choice but to rein him in, because saving him could cost him the one thing he wants the most. But James must play his cards right, it’s clear Topher is on another path, and James can’t risk his dark secret from being exposed, because James wants out of the dark and disturbing legacy that’s he’s been forced to carry, the traditions he’s taken part in so outdated, because his recompense is helping all the girls before Ophelia, providing them with a safe haven, but what James doesn’t realise is he’s left himself wide open and Ophelia falls victim to Topher’s machinations, that leave James to do the unthinkable.
Ophelia and James become a beautiful mess together, his darkness and her light bringing them closer, there love for one another unyielding, his claim on her solidified, there future strong when he learns of her pregnancy, because the one thing he set out to do, he fulfilled, binding Ophelia to him for life, entwined and everlasting, his ownership ironclad.
Ophelia and James will take you on a wild ride. Dark, twisted and delicious doesn’t begin to cover how these two will make you feel. If you’ve read Eva Marks work before you will not be disappointed. The intensity will have you craving every word from start to finish.
The spice was spicing, the smut was smutting and the steam was steaming. Because James’s love for his woman was raw, primitive, beautiful, powerful, dangerous yet primal. Yet, it was dirty, dark, filthy, depraved, uninhibited, sinfully wicked and delicious in all the best possible ways. With Ophelia, she is his heart and home, his forever.
Highly recommended both the author and the book. Can’t wait to read what this author writes next.
I received an ARC. Therefore, I am submitting a voluntary review.
dnf idec when. god is really testing me with my recent reads. the tropes in this were so good. he’s her ex boyfriend’s dad who BUYS her and is willing to kill his own son to keep her!!! if only they both weren’t dumbass bitches. some of the spice was hot but i still hold nothing but hate for them both
Great read! I loved the anti-hero hero and obsession dynamic. And how Ophelia ended up being just as dark as James was perfect. Loved how they were just two fked up people insanely obsessed with each other lol.
This is dark but not heavy if that makes sense? Like yes 100% the actions James takes against Ophelia are fked up and insane and just WRONG! But also, there’s a bit of lightness in the writing so I didn’t feel like completely worn out after reading like I do with some dark romances.
Only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is cause a few chapters were a bit repetitive for me and when breeding kink is advertised I always long for pregnancy to be in at least the full 3rd part of the book.
But highly recommend if you’re looking for a romance with psycho, unfeeling mmc who only acts for his obsession which is the fmc and an fmc who ends up being just as obsessed with him to the point she loves the fkd up degrading things he does!
Tropes/TW - anti hero - secret society-ish - morally black - psycho mmc - age gap - virgin fmc - ex’s dad - forced confinement - be buys her - insanely ott obsession and possessiveness - degradation and praise - spanking and chains/ropes - forced orgasms - murder - jealousy causing murder - knife play - breeding
Thank you to Eva Marks for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Ophelia went to James’ house with Topher for dinner. She knew she was going to have to break up with Topher since she really couldn’t stop thinking about James but she didn’t know how. Topher tells Ophelia that she will be sold to the highest bidder at an auction and she’ll be their property for the rest of her life. How will she get out of this one? James has an idea.
I love how James calls Ophelia “Sonnet”. Dinner at James’ house was not what Ophelia expected. It took Ophelia quite a long time to wrap her head around being sold. I definitely wouldn’t want to believe it too. When James went back into the cell I couldn’t contain my excitement. I enjoyed how determined James was to buy Ophelia. The waiter that James pulled aside was definitely scared to death. That ending was everything I wanted and more.
Eva Marks is brilliant. She always knows how to pull me into every single one of her stories. It’s always Christmas when I get to read one of her books. Another amazing job Eva!
❤️🔥 Ex-boyfriends dad ❤️🔥 Age-gap ❤️🔥 Blood play ❤️🔥 Breeding ki*k ❤️🔥CNC/Dubcon
I enjoyed Auctioned by Eva Marks. It took everything out of me. It's dark. It’s a burning fire that I refuse to put out. It's magic.
We start with a dark situation, our FMC finding out that her life is about to change... her self entitled boyfriend was planning on auctioning her off to the highest bidder... she finds herself locked away in a cell, her situation is bleak. But little did she know that she had caught someone’s attention, James... Her boyfriends DAD.
James is an utter god, his obsessive nature, his need for taking control, and making every situation end the way it would suit his needs. I love his burning passion for our FMC, Ophelia. His commanding nature. He starts out as this cold man, not wanting to change but slowly but surely, he changes into something completely different. He’s a work of art. If you love the age-gap, obsessive tropes, you need to read this book... like right now, because he is the best of the best. He may also be insanely hot, the way he treats Ophelia... Uff...
Ophelia has no one... no family… an orphan. She’s the perfect girl to auction. She had a fire about her, one that comes from having to fight for everything your entire life. Her fire works in her favour, and honestly its amazing to see her growth with James, Their growth together. They become one unit, and it’s extremely badass how they take a life wrapped in silence and bloodshed and turn it into power and submission. ❤️🔥
They are the ultimate couple, and they have everything going for them… or so you would think. This book has some amazing twists and turns. it's a ride that I never wanted to get off.
Auctioned releases June 13th, soon... very soon. ❤️🔥💕
NOW LISTEN. I MEANT IT WHEN I SAID RUN. AHHHHHHH. JAMES OPHELIA JAMES OPHELIA. I’m so OBSESSED.
Ophelia who didn’t have a place in this world and was trying to figure it out… Learning that everything she needed was just.. across the way. Watching her become this feisty, bratty, but stood her ground in what she believed. James who believed he didn’t have a heart, didn’t have emotions…. Watching him drive himself absolutely insane over Ophelia is EVERYTHING. The obsession. The praise. The degradation. THE SPICE. AUCTIONED IS EVERYTHING!!!!
Thank you to Eva for selecting me to arc read this book.
Oh my god, this is a honest 10 star book! I loved everything about it, the story, the characters and the ending!!! Perfect ending I must say. However I hated tropher!!! I liked how protective James was starting from the beginning even if he was obsessed with her. Thank you Eva for writing another good amazing 10 star book.
Check TW on this one. It’s got some f*cked up themes lol but it’s definitely fun if you’re looking for something a little dark and a lot spicy. It was perfect fun palette cleanser. Age gap, ex-bfs dad, being auditioned off, morally black MMC, a lot of cnc… I could go on. It’s a dark dirty good time.
“Wherever you are. Whatever you do. Light. Dark. Doesn’t matter. I see you just f*cking fine. Always will.”
Eva did it again with this book! Auctioned jumps right into it with Ophelia finding herself being auctioned by her ex-boyfriend. Little does she know her ex-boyfriend’s dad will be the one buying her. James proves in this book how unhinged he is and his level of obsession for Ophelia. When Ophelia finds herself with James, she lets her obsession with him too. These two get very dark and hot with their chemistry. They are both unhinged and make their dark relationship work for them.
I’ve really put off writing this review just because I don’t really know what to say. It was kind of disappointing how fast Ophelia just feel in love with James and it just felt so unrealistic how much she enjoyed being his basically slave. Saying she enjoyed being chained to a table all day long just to wait for him felt so pathetic. It restricted her from doing anything but obsess over him and the way she suddenly fell in love with him fell so stupid. It also felt like Ophelia didn’t stress enough about being human trafficked. I’ve read other books where this has happened and you could feel the tensions radiating off the pages. And I also know what trafficking is from prior knowledge and documentary’s and how terrible it really is. Whereas, in this book she was barely as stressed as she shouldn’t been and it felt like she didn’t care as much as she should’ve. Like I understand she didn’t have a lot going on in her life but that doesn’t mean you are fine with being human trafficked. As for James, his character felt kinda ridiculous. Like you suddenly fall for this girl and you’re willing to kill your son without any kind of guilt or remorse. It just all felt to emotionally detached from how people should really feel.
The whole book was up my alley but I just didn’t there was enough tension and it was just more for the aesthetic of becoming a ‘master’ type book. Overall not too bad but wouldn’t suggest.
What a wild love story! This book is my first Eva Marks title, and it had me all over the place and binge reading like a mad woman. I had to know what the conclusion was once it started, but as I progressed, I started uncovering things I was heavily not expecting. The dichotomy of Ophelia and James relationship is so crazy!!! I felt every emotion. This plot drags you through it and at times you don't know if you want Ophelia to escape or offer to replace her in the ankle chains she wears and wait like a good girl for James to get home. This book was such an entertaining good time. But dark... twisted... and has you questioning!!!
This book opens up slapping hard. It doesn't waste time as you go from an intimate dinner between our female lead and her boyfriend and his dad, thinking she's breaking things off due to his lack of interest or emotional availability, to her being told the relationship was a farce and to set her up to be sold. The changes since they met are weighing on her, and as a girl who is so desperately trying to find purpose and balance in her life, she can't cope with his rejection in opening up to her. She is a broken young woman searching for love and a place to claim her. She didn't realize that she would be claimed soon, just not how she was hoping.
The darkness of the situation Ophia finds herself in is truly terrifying. Thinking you are going to a final break up dinner to be told the relationship you were ending that night never even existed to him, and oh yea he's auctioning you off as the virgin sacrifice to solidify his elevation into the same messed up male society his father is in. Ophelia refuses to fall into victim mode and fights them the whole way. She is such a fighter. Even towards her own emotions and desires. Topher is a weasel of an ex boyfriend and you have no questions as to why Ophelia was leaving him, but his father James is a force that Ophelia noticed far before they entered the cell together and her immediate attraction to him not only made her relationship with his son end, it also might become the end of her entirely?
James is a wild male character. He's a dichotomy of such darkness, but the softness that Ophelia is pulling deep out of his bones is addicting. He really is involved in some of the darkest behaviors, but the light that simmers beneath his cold and blunt exterior is something that all Zade Meadow lovers will cheer for. He is so cold with Ophelia but the way she pushes him and she never let's him get away with anything as they struggle in their power dynamic almost brings in an adorable layer of grumpy sunshine alongside such a truly dark and disturbing situation. James is 100% unapologetic in his actions and ownership over Ophelia. He says what he means, and means what he says, and she finds out more than a few times just how much he is a man of his word.
This is such a spicy book. That should be obvious in the context of the situations we are navigating here, but there are heavy spice scenes and some that really make your eyes pop out of your head while reading. (I shamelessly loved them all). The power plays in ownership, and submission is a wild ride, and at times, you don't know if you are ok with it or not. Our characters are both fighting against so many inner emotions and fears while learning to coexist in their new dynamic together. The way James openly talks about how he specifically owns her, and how she likes it and what that creates in such a deep dark desirable pull between them, you crave their interactions, but also fear the moments of dark ownership James pulls out. No matter how much they fall into the abyss of connection they find within one another, no matter how they hide away and pretend the outside world won't come knocking, it will, and she has to be ready. He will make sure she is.
They aren't the only powers that be here, though. Our story heavily focuses on our main characters' and their back and forth that ranges from serious to steamy, and to my surprise, at times even a little funny and light-hearted, but there is also a very serious matter at hand simmering beneath their Owner and Pet games. James has Ophelia.... and he shouldn't. When secrets come to a head and things start getting serious, this plot takes an exciting turn around 80%, and tension starts getting high when James has to face serious choices in his future business and legacy. Who will come with him? Who won't? And who might end up the sacrifice.
Overall, this book was very entertaining. It was seriously steamy, but the intensity of the dynamics and the underlying plot really had you addicted to what was going to happen. I was terrified for a while that I would be left on a cliffhanger, but the final pages of this story start hitting hard, and the climax is heavily satisfying. I loved the pick up in the serious plot under Ophelia and James' aggressive and dark love story, and honestly would have loved having more of that involved. The ending was exciting, and seeing them both in action more in that capacity would have been eatin' up by me happily, lol. I love their push and pull with one another. The scene of them going back and forth when Oliver comes to dinner after she tries to run had me craving more of them in that nature and would have happily skipped into a second book featuring these characters.
I waited and waited for this release after watching for it to drop over instagram, and I was so satisfied! I can't wait to fall into more of this Authors stories!!!
⚠️ This review contains major spoilers. Proceed if you dare. ... this is a long one...
4 stars — Dark, disturbing, and surprisingly cohesive
Let’s be real — Auctioned is not a romance. It’s obsession dressed in designer leather and dim lighting, parading as love. And if you blink, you just might find yourself caught in its thrall.
This is the second Eva Marks book I’ve read. The first — Under the Bed — was pure, unhinged chaos. A step-sibling slaughter spree masquerading as love. There was no emotional depth, no introspection, just body counts and toxic devotion. If I could rate that zero stars on Goodreads, I would. So walking into Auctioned, my expectations were six feet underground.
And yet... I finished it.
---
🧠 What worked — and why
Unlike Under the Bed, this one tries. It’s still twisted, but it attempts character work. There’s a genuine effort to explore trauma, brokenness, and power. Ophelia, the heroine, is a product of the foster system, shaped by abandonment and abuse. She's hunting for structure, for someone to own her, because she never had the luxury of being safe. That’s not love — that’s survival psychology. And when someone like that meets a man like James?
Boom. Spiral.
James, for his part, is just as wrecked. The heir to a legacy of violence, desperate to end a cycle he’s also perpetuating — with clean hands that are anything but. He kidnaps her — literally buys her — and within a week, she’s locked in his house, in his arms, and somehow in his heart. Consent? Dubious at best. She capitulates not because she wants him, but because she needs something to cling to. That’s not seduction; that’s psychological captivity.
But here's where it gets thorny: James isn’t just a possessive psycho. He murders his son, his business partner, and the partner’s son — not just for Ophelia, but to destroy the generational trafficking ring his family built. He doesn’t just want Ophelia. He wants to burn it all down. It’s not redemption, exactly, but it’s a violent kind of restitution. He’s not a hero — he’s a moral demolitionist.
Still, the writing pulls you in. It’s messed up, but it’s not lazy. There’s an intentional descent into madness that’s disturbingly well-crafted. And unlike Under the Bed, I could follow their emotional logic — even when it made my skin crawl.
---
❓Let’s talk ethics
Is this romance? Barely. It teeters on the line between dark romance and psychological horror. The story leans hard into tropes that eroticize control, violence, and trauma. There’s a thrill to it, yes — but should there be? That depends on what you think fiction is for. If you’re here for morally gray fantasies that explore the worst corners of desire — sure. If you’re here looking for love, look elsewhere.
Does James prey on her? Yes. But he also tears down the empire that enabled that predation. He kills the men who keep the system alive. It’s not rescue; it’s scorched earth with a velvet glove. The story muddies that with just enough backstory and pseudo-redemption to keep you unsure. That’s the game Marks plays: ambiguity.
And yet... he does rescue her. He drags her out of one cage, only to place her in another — one built of velvet, violence, and emotional dependency. Over time, she stops resisting. She begins to want the cage. She yearns for it. And in the end, he releases her from the literal chains — but not the psychological ones. He says, if she runs, if she dies, he’ll follow her to the ends of the earth, or even into heaven itself, and drag her back. It’s not a fantasy of freedom. It’s a fantasy of possession, twisted into something she calls love.
Let’s not kid ourselves — there’s no moral high ground here. James doesn’t just rescue Ophelia. He cages her. And she thanks him for it.
And yet... it closes with a Happily Ever After — one twisted through a mirror darkly.

🪓 Final verdict
Auctioned is better written than Under the Bed — by far. It has more structure, more internal logic, and even the twisted relationship feels grounded in trauma-informed behavior. But it’s still a tale of captivity, obsession, and questionable consent being sold as erotic tension.
It doesn’t uplift. It doesn’t heal. But it does what it sets out to do — get under your skin.
> Not a romance. A fever dream of obsession and trauma, dressed up in darkness and leather.

Would I recommend it?
Only if you’re willing to question why you’re enjoying it. And if you’re not? That’s its own kind of answer.

> Side note: This review is a bit of a departure from my usual style. I tend to review books with raw emotion, getting caught up in the characters’ chaos and intensity. But this time? I stayed objective. I saw the damage, the darkness — and I could appreciate the writing because I didn’t romanticize it.
