Augury

Rate this book
After discovering the ugly truth behind the death of his parents, the life of former soldier Michael Cortez takes a downward spiral. A night with some friends presents the chance to bring justice to the past with the use of a scrapped military time travel project. It doesn't take long for him to figure out that the stuff they taught in history class was false and only holding a nugget of truth.
Frost was only a child when life as she understood it came to a violent halt. The death of her mother has left her cold to the feelings of those around her, but it has made her one of the strongest human warriors left in the world. Humanity stands on the precipice of extinction at the hands of ruthless creatures and she would rather die on her feet than live on her knees.
Though there are over a thousand years separating them they will learn that there is no real way to defy fate. All that has passed did so because it has already happened. To defy augury only ensures that the power of fate fills the void created by the disruption of its plan with something that is equally definitive.

The story starts off like any other science fiction novel and then takes you on the roller coaster ride of two main characters. Historical events such as World War II, the Inquisition of the Middle Ages and then the greatest legendary Mage/wizard of mythology. That's just the first half. Dark elves, Fae and other daemons have, yet to be portrayed in other books like they have in this one. The action scenes are intense, fast paced and brutal.
In the second half of the book you are jumped forward in time and dropped into a devastated world. Human beings are almost extinct. Mankind is in hiding from the daemons and their malicious Fae High Lords who now rule a dying planet. Human beings have one last hope for survival and it's a race against all odds to either die on their feet or go out with a final Big Bang.
The many different characters take on a life of their own and their personalities drive the story. There are very serious moments tempered with some humor. The format in which this book is written took a little getting used to, but after the first chapter you find that the story flows and you've been reading for hours. A good read for those who are looking for a different kind of science fiction/urban fantasy novel.
