DOUBLE REVIEW FOR LOST IN DISTRACTION AND LOST FOR YOU!
These two books were exactly what I needed to get me out of my book funk. I really enjoyed the suspense and mystery aspect to these books. But mostly, I fell in love with how freaking adorable Brax and Elle were. Their love story is more than just a romance. It is a story of how love heals and as cheesy as it sounds it shows how love conquers all. It’s hard to talk about what happens without spoiling the first or second book. So, I’ll just say I flew through these books. It had all the angst, suspense, mystery, romance, and cuteness that I need to love a book.
“When I’m with him it feels like I’m his whole world – that his sole focus is on me and he’d move heaven and earth to make me happy. I feel like the gaping hole in my heart is slowly being closed up by him. He has given me hope that life can be good for me again, despite my horrific past.”
When we first meet Elle, she is just starting college and she is broken. A shell of a girl. Left empty from losing her entire family a few years ago while she was away at camp. She should have been there. Now she’s going to through motions and being groomed to take over her father’s company. I liked that she was an heiress but she was in no way snobby or even acted rich. She was real, grounded, and humble. She wanted to blend in and be unimpressionable, but Brax blew all of that out of the water. I loved seeing her break out of her shell. I couldn’t believe how she was able to shine so brightly even after all she had and has been through. I found her relatable and I thought she was adorable, just like Brax thought.
“She is my life now and I have told her more than once that I can’t live without her and to be honest. I don’t think either of us would ever be the same again if we had to be apart. I can’t live in a world where she is not in my life, it’s not even an option.”
Brax was hired to watch over Elle, but she quickly becomes more than an assignment to him. Hell, he only agreed because he wanted to make her eyes sparkle again after seeing how dull they were in a surveillance photo. I loved how take-charge Brax was without being over-the-top alpha. He made me swoon. He isn’t afraid to say what he wants and he only ever wants to protect and love Elle. I hated that he had to keep his true profession from Elle for so long, but I knew that these two were too in love for anything to seriously keep them apart for long. And that theory of mine was tested MULTIPLE times in this series. Poor Brax and Elle. I loved seeing Brax fall in love with Elle. He would truly move heaven and hell for her. They deserve each other.
“You’re my today, tomorrow, and my forever if you’ll still have me.” “I’ve never wanted you more, Brax, and I don’t see that changing in this lifetime.”
I loved the pacing of the story. Neither of the books were too long or bogged down in detail. They were just full of twists and turns. I was biting my lip while reading most of the time. It was either from the sexual tension in the beginning, the steamy but not really steamy scenes between Elle and Brax, or from the intensity of the suspense. I also loved the way B.J. Harvey wrote the story where it flowed very well. It was mostly in Elle and Brax’s POVs but we get to see some glimpses into other characters’ heads, like the bad guy at one point and lots of Shay! I loved Shay. He was Brax’s best friend and he became a brother to Elle. I also loved Devon, who we mainly see in Lost for You. I want to know everything about those two! They have good back stories, I know they have to. I was so sad when this book ended. I was not ready to let go of Brax and Elle yet. I wanted a double epilogue! Or I could just live with them forever. That would be good too. Even with all the darkness threatening to consume them or tear them apart, they always found ways to love each other and to be more adorable.
“I’m home.” “You’ve always been home, Elle.” “No, I haven’t. I lost everyone I loved four years ago. I thought that was the end of my life. That I’d never feel settled again. That I’d never have my anchor. But now I feel home again. I have you. Forever. You’re all I need, all I’ll ever want. I’m truly home now.” “You’re my home too, baby. You are where I’m supposed to be.”
Since when did novellas become so emotional and heartbreaking? Lost Without You was a beautiful addition to the Lost series. It can be read as a standalone; but, personally, I would read it after Lost for You and Lost In Distraction. That’s what I did, and although I have no doubts that this story would be amazing enough without reading the other two books in the series, I feel like it hit my heart a lot harder reading it with the knowledge of what happens in the first two books. I’m going to try my best to think of LWY as a standalone in order to prevent spoilers.
“So color me stupid that I would be the one left speechless the day I met Brenna Bertorelil, the one woman who didn’t want anything to do with me. The same woman who would capture my heart and make me truly believe in the notion of soul mates.”
Before there was Brax and Ellie, there was Shay and Brenna… We meet Shay in LFY and LID as Brax’s best friend. They’re both in the security business, which is how they both meet the loves of their lives. LWY mostly takes place before the Brax meets Ellie, with some overlaps of course. I was cracking up from the moment Brenna meets Shay. It was love at first sight. They just didn’t know it yet.
“She’s hot, and feisty, exactly what I like in a woman. Couldn’t Victor have an ugly fucking daughter? Of course not–she has to be gorgeous and tight in all the right places, and fuck me if that body isn’t designed to bring a man to his knees.”
Their chemistry from the moment they met was explosive. I was instantly in love with the two of them and their relationship. At first, they aggravate each other. Shay thinks that she’s the spoiled princess brat of his mafia boss, and Brenna thinks he’s a cocky idiot. A few moments in the car quickly changes that. After a heart-to-heart, they realize that they were wrong about each other and Shay asks Brenna to go out with him and give him a chance to prove he’s worthy of her *sigh*.
“There were a few boyfriends during my time at Cornell, but nothing serious, and none of them set my heart racing like Shay does. He’s cocky, and on the sexy side of arrogant, but the man he’s shown himself to be during the short time we’ve had together has done nothing to turn me off.”
Everything kinda goes quickly from there. I desperately tried to slow down and savor each moment, but I was too captivated by Shay and Brenna. With a novella, the author has to choose which moments to elaborate on and which moments to skim over. BJ Harvey surprised me which moments she chose to highlight, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved it. There were some bumps along the road, like Brenna’s dad not approving of their relationship. And since he’s Shay’s boss and also a killer he tries to keep them apart, but, of course, that doesn’t happen according to his plans.
“With Brenna, I’m finding that I want her with an intensity that takes even my breath away. Two weeks and I can’t wait to talk to her, see her, touch her.”
I loved how once they gave their relationship a chance, they quickly accepted that they were meant to be. This book was the epitome of “once you know, you know”. I was dying over how cute they were together. Their banter made me chuckle, the moments they realized they were falling more and more for each other made me swoon, and the way they opened up to each other so fully and so quickly made my heart melt. I never wanted it to end.
“We loved each other. We said it only a month after we met, but it was like it always has been between us—a well-tuned machine that has been working to perfection its whole life.”
Shay is way more perfect than I expected him to be from LFY and LID. I didn’t realize he had a past and secrets that he kept inside. He treats Brenna like a princess, even though she doesn’t act like one. Every time he calls her “cupcake” it made me grin ear to ear. Brenna was so feisty, strong, and stubborn. She cracked me up and always kept Shay on his toes. Together they were more than perfect. They brought out the best in each other, changed each other, made each other deliriously happy, and fit together in more ways than one.
“As I told Victor and Brax, it doesn’t matter if I’ve only known her six months. IT could be six minutes, six weeks, six months, or six years—she is it for me, and she has told me I’m it for her.”
The ending gutted me. Have you ever sobbed without any tears coming out? That was me (I don’t cry). The entire time. I knew how it would end. But, Lost Without You is an emotional overload. I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect way to end their story. It was beautiful, poignant, and way more than I could have dreamed. I think I say this every time I read a BJ Harvey book, but her books get better and better each time. I’m in love. This novella is definitely one of my favorites. For those who have read LFY and LID and don’t think you want to read this. You better read it. Or I’ll find you.
“If I die young...if for some reason I die before you, I’ll wait for you, Shay McCarron. I’ll wait until your dying day, until you take your last breath on this earth, and then I’ll be there to hold your hand as we guide each other toward the light. Two lost souls who found each other in life, finding each other again in death, I promise you.”
Decent but didn't enjoy writing style I didn't care for the writing style..parts were too choppy and didn't flow well, or would say they were one person's POV and switch to another's unannounced, and overall grammatical errors. Overall the story was decent but I just felt it could have been better. I bought this while on sale for .99 so I feel I got what I paid for in the end.
Years before Elise Halliwell's family was murdered while she was away at camp. Now she in New York attending college when she meets Braxton James. Brax starts breaking down the walls "Elle" has erected and quickly moves into her heart. But Brax is there under false pretenses. He was hired to protect Elle from death threats.
The book shows that this is actually 2 books with a novella. No, it is one book with a novella about another character in the book. Dividing the story into 2 books made no sense at all. There is not a cutoff for the first to go into the second. It ends in a major cliffhanger which I despise. Therefore, I insist that this is ONE book (plus novella). So anyway, it is written from several persons' point of view in first person. Mostly from Brax's and Elle's view. I liked the style for the most part and it was fairly easy to see who's view it was but the story itself didn't really jive. Since I don't like to do spoilers I won't get into all the "little" things that bugged me. But the fact I did read it through should count for something.
Now as for the novella, I did not read it. I thought it was simply not necessary and did not want to read it.
Lost in Distraction The book starts off from where the it ends. That right there grabs you. You wanna know why they got to that point. You fall in love with these characters from the start. They fall just as fast for each other and considering the secrets Brax is keeping from Elle, you hope the ending is just a fluke and they can have a HEA. It's not! They don't! Omg I can't believe it ended like that! Good thing I have the box set lol ;)
Lost For You OMG! I can't ! Why?? Yeah I'm confusing you right now lol If you read the first in the series YOU MUST read the conclusion to Brax and Elle's story. They get their HEA! But someone doesn't and I nearly cried at work! I had to keep it together since I'm obviously not supposed to be reading at work haha Now there's Shays story on how he met and lost his girl. I'm definitely reading it at home!
Lost Without You I'm ugly crying OMG! What an amazing story about Shay and his Brenna. Ugh how unfair life can be. In the end, they're together forever but at what cost? ONE CLICK SERIOUSLY and make sure you're alone cuz you will cry!
I only gave The Lost Series Box Set 3.5 stars because I didn't feel the writing was as strong as it could've been. (Great writing style with the Bliss Series)
Good storyline. Not too predictable plot. Still a worthwhile read.
Wow what a book boxset!! I was captured by this story it was gripping and when I wasn't reading he book (due to work) I was thinking about what was going to happen next! I really enjoyed this book set!
DNF - made it halfway through book 2 and couldn't make myself read any more. If you like grammatical errors, awkward writing and unbelievable plot/characters, then you'll like these books.
