Deborah Raleigh is the author of thirty three books and novellas for Kensington Publishing. Her first regency LORD CARLTON’S COURTSHIP was nominated as Best First Regency by Romantic Times and was an Award of Excellence finalist. She has also been nominated for Career Achievement in Regency romance by Romantic Times.
She has been an avid reader since she could hold a book in her hands and always dreamed of putting her own dreams down on paper. She is married with two teenage boys who manage to keep life interesting. She loves to travel, although she is careful to call vacations research sabbaticals and considers housework optional at best.
3.5 stars rounded up. 2nd book in the series by Deborah Raleigh aka Alexandra Ivy. Surprisingly, I liked the mystery here more than the chemistry between the MC's, which was far too insta-lusty. I love the idea of a neat-freak, mathematically brilliant but socially challenged MFC getting together with a hot pirate-ish (apparently just looks like a pirate?) MMC. But I wanted to know more about them as people, other than MFC is apparently a pariah in her village for being an oddball and MMC has a nasty dad. And I wanted more sexual tension between them. A nice crackling "enemies to lovers" vibe would have been fun.
Notes: --No spoiler, MMC ends up being your typical "rake hiding his family lineage" and he's pretty sweet but kind of a dunderhead. --I thought it was rather odd that all of the male characters who are good guys lust after MFC, finding her gorgeous, but no men in her 26 years of growing up in a small village have pursued her??
There are a few editing errors. Also a few overused phrases ("smoldering," "taste of" to name a couple). There's not a ton of finesse in the descriptions.
I might have given this 3 stars but there is some offbeat humor in the early chapters between the MC's that I loved. (MMC pulls out a pistol when MFC won't come out of her carriage. She: "That is a very fine dueling pistol. I notice it even possesses ivory inlay. No doubt you had it crafted at Manton's?" He: "Bloody hell, have you been drinking?")
I won't go out of my way to buy the 3rd book in the series, but this was fun overall.
I usually don’t read books with an element of suspense/mystery but this was a really good one!! And the characters were utterly lovable. When the drama hit, it was a little hard to watch everything kind of hit the fan, but at the same time, the ‘flair’ behind the way all the characters consistently behaved made it easier to enjoy, the way I would enjoy watching a play on a stage. Definitely recommended for anyone who likes regency novels :) Steam: 3/5
What a kick of a novel! Clara as a brilliant and logical woman faced with being kidnapped by a gorgeous “pirate” easily confounds smugglers, spies and art thieves. An amusing historical and delightful HEA.
She's spinster and is under the impression that no one is interested in her. He's trying to find his brother's killer and kidnaps her. And she is anything but uninteresting to him. This is a fun entertaining read. Enjoy I did.
I believe that this book contained enough twists and turns to boggle your mind. Love , adventures and excitement to keep you intrigued. Can't wait to read book 3. Awesome book.
I thought this was an original story. I liked the characters and their situations. I've read some of Alexandra Ivy's other books so I wasn't sure what I was going to get, but I was pleasantly surprised with this read.
A man some would call dangerous. A Woman many have scorned. A blistering tale of two outcasts finding each other—and losing themselves in passion…
A penniless rake with a penchant for gambling, Rutherford Hawksley has friends in both high places and low—perfect for trying to discover who murdered his brother. Ruthless in his quest, he discovers the nobleman he suspects plans on killing a woman traveling to London. A woman with information Hawksley would very much like to know.
But his simple plan of abduction goes awry when he plucks the not-so-simple Miss Clara Dawson from her coach. Hawksley is used to his startling blue eyes charming ladies into submission, yet Clara’s spirit and intelligence prove quite the match for him. And soon he can think of nothing more pleasurable than keeping this rare bird in his not-so-gilded cage, where he can pick her most intriguing mind, enjoy her exquisite body—and teach her more about desire than she ever dreamed possible…
I enjoyed this book very much, would like to read some more of Deborah Raleigh's books.
★★★★★ A wonderful sweet historical romance. Book #2 Hellion´s Den.
Hawksley is the black sheep of his family. He is investigating his brother's murder. When he discovers that his main suspect has hired someone to kill a woman on her way into London he assumes that she knows something that could help him solve the murder. Now he must keep her safe to continue his investigation. Clara is a very intelligent woman with a passion for solving puzzles. She has always been an outsider, too eccentric to be wanted by a man. She is happy to remain a spinster. The mystery deepens when Clara sees that the papers Hawksley found are more than they appear to be.
We have an intriguing mystery, and some great secondary characters. Our hero is strong and honourable, with that touch of danger. Our heroine is brave and independent. Just a very enjoyable read. I can't wait to find Santos' book.
Hawksley and Clara. Loved both of them. He was trying to track down his brother's murderer. He finds that someone is after Clara, and believes it has something to do with his brother, so he kidnaps her. There were SO MANY things to love about this book. Hawksley was out of his element with Clara, that was very entertaining. Clara was freakishly smart and he admired that about her. He's working to solve a mystery and he is more than happy to have her help, unlike in most historical romances, the man thinks women are nothing more than ornamentation. I think what I enjoyed most about this book was Clara, she always felt like an outcast because she was so smart, yet Hawksley it always telling her how wonderful, beautiful and smart she is. Wonderful relationship.
3.5 (liked it+). I really have no complaints about this book, but can't justify giving it a higher score. My first by this author. I think that I've just read so many other books lately that I liked better. This was entertaining. Fast read. Steamy. Maybe because it was a non stop plot of trying to find the murderer and there wasn't the usual ball or social attraction to break up the all consuming murder plot and add more romance?
I really enjoyed this one. It seems that Deborah Raleigh does a great job in making the heroines really smart and at the same time irresistable! Great combination! I think anyone that has read Amanda Quick or Robyn DeHart will really enjoy her novels. She mixes mystery and romance superbly! I am going to read the last in this trio next!
i loved this Clara is not your typical victorian heroine she's a math wiz who really isn't looking for the rich husband with the title. but my favorite thing about this book has to be the fact that it has a plot other than the "find a rich husband" it has a whole mytery associated with it
I enjoyed this historical romance. It had a good story line and kept me interested throughout. I was a little annoyed by a few expressions and words that I felt were overused, but it was still a decent read.
This was the first romance novel I ever read and I enjoyed it. It was a fun quick read and I can see why they're addictive. It's amusing to see how the author has to get around saying "penis". These books are about lust and passion and everyone could use more of those in life.
