The Guardians of Rock Hill

Rate this book
Great things come in fours. Abbey and Olivia are sisters, often mistaken for twins, but born eleven months apart. Their family once owned the largest mill in Rock Hill, South Carolina, an idyllic Southern town rich in charm and tradition. Rachael is the new kid in town. Her father is a church pastor. Aliyah is raised in a house filled with love-despite its dirt floors. The four girls forge friendships in the magic of childhood.

Later, as they reach adulthood, Abbey is loved by everyone but holds a secret that threatens to fracture the bond shared by the four friends. Olivia becomes a beauty queen-with a tendency toward addiction. Rachael is a singer who finds her voice through love, and Aliyah rises from poverty to financial success through her own drive and determination. As the four best friends continue to grow and find their unique voices, can they stand together in a changing world? Or will their differences tear them apart?

What is there to say? I'm Bret Allen and I'm a writer!

I have a blog site and studied Journalism. I prefer to write with humour, or at least a wry eye, when writing articles.

In fiction, my favourite genres are fantasy, scifi and supernatural. There's something fascinating about the comparisons drawn between real life and the fantastic; in a contrary fashion, they can be more profound than those drawn by real-life stories.

Most of all, I try to put a new spin on those genres, which in many cases have become stiff, old shambling corpses. Stitch on a smart new head, put a little truth in the heart, run a 500 megawatt current of strangeness through them and suddenly... they live again!

As for me, I've lived most of my life in Shropshire and Staffordshire. I have a few great friends, a myriad of mates, a large and wonderful family, a fur baby and a long suffering partner.

I draw most of my inspiration from Neil Gaiman, Tolkien, Tad Williams, Kim Newman, Terry Pratchett, daydreams, nightmares and the magic of the everyday.

This was our book club pick this month, and I'm so glad it was. The way the four women's stories unfolded during our discussion had me thinking about my own childhood friendships. We spent a whole evening talking about Abbey's secret and whether she would ever have told if things hadn't forced her. Our group was split! That's the mark of a good book when everyone sees something different.

Our book club featured this recently, and Aliyah became the character we couldn't stop talking about. Growing up with love even when there wasn't much else that hit home for several of us. One member shared her own grandmother's story because of this book. That's what great reading does. It opens doors.

Our book club discussion got pretty deep with this one. The question someone asked "Do you think Abbey would ever have told her secret if she didn't have to?" had us all thinking about our own lives. Sometimes the books that make you reflect on yourself are the ones that stay with you longest. This one did

I joined the discussion late but caught up fast. The friendship between these four women felt so familiar. The way they drift and come back, the way they love each other even when they don't understand each other. Our group spent a good hour just talking about which character we related to most. I was team Aliyah all the way.

I wasn't sure about this one at first, but our club's feature made me give it a chance. So glad I did. The four women felt like people I might know. The discussion afterward was lively people had strong opinions about Abbey's secret and whether she was right to keep it. No easy answers. That's good writing.

As someone who actually lives in Rock Hill, I was so curious when our club announced this feature. I kept texting my friends "this is my street!" while reading. But what stayed with me was Olivia. Watching her smile on stage while struggling inside I know women like that. I hope she's okay.

Our book club's discussion guide asked us about Olivia's addiction and whether we saw signs early on. Several of us missed them on first read, which led to a really honest conversation about how often we miss signs in real life too. Books that make you think beyond the pages are rare. This one did.

The moment in our discussion when someone brought up Aliyah's dirt-floor childhood and how much love was there anyway actually made a few of us tear up. We talked about what we carry from our own childhoods. The good and the hard. This book gave us permission to share.
