Royce Locke and Sawyer Key are back and better than ever with new mysteries and hilarious shenanigans as they tackle their greatest challenge yet: fatherhood.
A perfect holiday weekend takes a twisted turn when Royce investigates a suspicious death involving Dr. Jean Claude Matisse, a retired pioneer in fertility medicine. What first looks like an accidental overdose quickly turns into something more sinister when explosive allegations reveal hundreds of reasons why someone would want the doctor dead.
This investigation hits close to home, exposing the vulnerabilities of relying on science and a doctor’s ethics to have a family, especially when the hopeful husbands are only a positive pregnancy test away from parenthood.
The Paternity Puzzle is book one in the Felonies and Fatherhood trilogy, the third story arc for Royce Locke and Sawyer Key. ** New readers should start with the Zero Hour and Matrimony and Mayhem trilogies before reading Felonies and Fatherhood. ** The Paternity Puzzle continues Royce and Sawyer’s happily ever after as they move into the most anticipated phase of their lives. Though some storylines span the trilogy, this book does not end in a cliffhanger. Heat, humor, heart, and homicide abound. You have been warned. 18+
I'm a wife and mother of three teenage kids. I've been married to the same wonderful man for twenty years. I've decided that if I can survive raising three kids then I can survive anything!! I haven't uttered the Mama's curse yet, but it could happen any day now. You know the one..."I hope you have a child just like you someday."
I'm an avid reader and lover of all things romance. I've spent my entire adult life waiting to follow my dreams of becoming a writer. One day this past summer, I decided to just do it. No more wishing and hoping. I haven't quit my day job, but that is my ultimate goal...make a living telling stories of love.
I write contemporary gay fiction. I hope you will love reading my books as much as I enjoy writing them.
This was a fascinating book to me because I've recently read about a real life version of the incident which sparks the crime that ends up being the focus of this narrative.
I liked that Aimee linked it in to the fears and worries both men are having about their journey to fatherhood and the surrogacy process and I loved that their relationship is as strong and supportive as ever.
This is the opener to a final (I believe) trilogy featuring Locke & Key and the investigation that Royce ends up involved in mirrors the changes happening in their private lives too as they prepare for the start of their surrogacy journey.
Providing a lot of the usual highs that this pair bring to the table, Aimee also successfully marries in Sawyer's fears of having been on the precipice of fatherhood before with his late husband Vic and he's justifiably worried he's tempting fate by making any kind of future plans for the potential baby.
Royce, of course, has his own internalisation about whether he'll be a good dad or if he'll be more like Eddie but, as Sawyer's on hand to remind him, his dad has been making efforts to be better and build a new relationship with both Royce and his brother.
The narrative nicely switches between the domestic relationship side of the plot and the investigation into the potential murder and I liked that, even though it was fairly obvious what had likely happened, it didn't make it any less interesting.
What's likely to be the main storyline of book two is also introduced here in a fairly subtle manner but with enough interest that I'm definitely keen to see how Aimee explores the cold case aspect with Sawyer in that one.
And, as pending fatherhood comes closer for both men, I'm intrigued to see how Aimee continues to weave that into the future narratives.
#ARC kindly received from the author via GRR Tours, I am voluntarily leaving a review
3.5 okay stars! Now that both Royce and Sawyer have different teams and responsibilities in the PD; I guess the stories will a mix of mysteries and personal milestones. This plot had a fertility murder mystery for Royce to solve, while the couple was also going through the surrogacy journey. The murder mystery seemed a little too obvious to me.. and otherwise too, the story didn’t hold me attention, I didn’t feel invested.. 🙄 I hope the series gets better as it moves along, the next one with the serial killer’s son; sounds interesting. The author has dropped some clues in this book itself.
DNF 18%. Struggling with this. Could be because I am not in the mood or that the main subject does not appeal to me. Could also be the fact that there's still no case and I am bored. Might return to it later.
Locke and Key are back in a new trilogy, ready to embrace the next step in their lives: becoming parents. And thanks to their best friend Kelsey, who has agreed to be their surrogate, that dream is getting closer to reality.
However, just as the trio awaits news on whether the surrogacy has been successful, a high-profile murder occurs. Which Royce is assigned to investigate, but he’s caught off guard when he discovers it revolves around a famous fertility doctor accused of using his own product to impregnate hundreds of unsuspecting women.
This revelation makes what Royce and Sawyer are doing even more concerning—especially for Sawyer, who came close to starting a family before.
But this time, it’s different, and Royce is determined to catch the killer, proving to Sawyer that nothing will stand in the way of their dream.
And with plenty of familiar faces, an engaging mystery, and a few spicy moments, this was an enjoyable read. That really highlighted the great characters that Locke and Key are and how far they’ve come.
It was so good to be back with these two adorable men, Sawyer Key and Royce Locke, cops with the Savannah PD.
I was hooked from the first trilogy when they met and although they worked difficult and dangerous cases their chemistry and building relationship was at the heart of the stories.
I then followed them through the next trilogy, the moving in together, the deepening relationship, the changing jobs within the department, family issues and getting married, and now we get the chance to catch up with them in this new trilogy, settled, happily married, and now taking the big step into fatherhood.
You really need to have followed these two before diving into this book, to understand the men, feel the overwhelming love they have for each other and know the characters they surround themselves with. It was great catching up with them all and I was so pleased to see Eddie finally turning over a new leaf. Kelsey is the best friend everybody should have and she is always there for Sawyer, especially when his anxiety gets the better of him. In this book Kelsey makes the ultimate sacrifice and gift to Sawyer and Royce.
The plot line running alongside the happy couple really spikes Sawyers anxiety when an eminent fertility doctor is found dead in what looks like a suicide. Royce uncovers a murder and with information from their investigative friends from the Sinister in Savannah Podcast, find that there could be hundreds of people who would like to see the doctor dead. This is all too close to home for poor Sawyer as they are just days away from a pregnancy test that will change their lives forever.
Loved this book and can’t wait to read the next one!
The Paternity Puzzle, the third series and another important evolutionary step in Sawyer Keys and Royce Locke’s relationship and marriage.
This well written book is about families, from many emotional aspects and from different perspectives. It’s Sawyer and Royce embarking on their own journey through prospective fatherhood, a murder case involving a fertility doctor that hits home for them, and Royce’s strained dynamic with his father gets a thoughtful storyline that’s moving and realistic.
While this investigation is complete, the story sets up a larger narrative with a different darker story going forward.
Excellent character development, and it’s wonderful to see all my favorites here, including those podcasters from Sinister in Savannah.
Really looking forward to seeing the next in the series.
Sawyer and Royce are ready to have a baby, with Kelsey as their surrogate. They go through the process and are hopeful.
Over a long weekend, a terrible fertility doctor who used his own sperm to impregnate women is killed. The scandal puts his wife and daughter in the public eye, but Royce is also after the murderer, adding more to the sensation.
What at first looks like suicide clearly becomes murder when the fingerprints show the daughter crushed up pills for her Dad’s smoothie. Then her Mom gave him a drink, then he drank more.
The Mom, daughter, and their lawyer friend are all arrested, and the judge will decide if the death was intentional or accidental.
Meanwhile, Sawyer has an attack of fear about their own possibility of getting pregnant, even though he trusts their clinic and doctor. He gets some reassurance, and they get the good news soon after.
Sawyer also starts working with a man who’s the son of a serial killer and brought him to justice, but there’s something about him that makes both Sawyer and Royce uneasy.
I liked this book, with the fraudulent doctor getting what he deserved, and the cute parts about having a baby. The mystery wasn’t hard to solve, but played a part in the plot that was interesting.
I received this ARC for free and am glad to provide my honest review with gratitude.
I love these characters so much so when I found out that i haven't, in fact, read all of their books I jumped straight back into it🤩 Sawyer and Royce are getting ready for fatherhood and are thrust in the middle of a murder investigation as usual. Great one.
What a brilliant start to a new series featuring two of my favourite men. With their marriage still solid as a rock and work going great for them both, Sawyer and Royce make the decision to embrace fatherhood with the help of best friend and surrogate Kelsey. Of course a new case develops for Royce to investigate involving an unethical fertility doctor so it hits very close to home for them. It niggles at Sawyer for a bit but his fears are allayed and it’s yet another example of the compassionate and sensitive manner in which the author tackles the subject of assisted fertility and surrogacy. The case itself doesn’t take long for Royce to tie up so he and Sawyer manage to get plenty of steamy and sweet moments together. I did have some feels reading this book. I laughed out loud at the very first line, felt my face smiling so big as Royce and his Dad continued slow positive steps in healing their relationship, chortled at Sawyer’s introduction to Pilates and laughed out loud once again at the carpet cleaning antics. I can’t wait for more as this was a very enjoyable and engaging beginning in what will no doubt be a wonderful series.
Sawyer and Royce return in the first book of a new series called Felonies and Fatherhood. The two are about embark on fatherhood (not felonies) but first Royce is called upon to investigate the death of a famous fertility specialist. As the investigation proceeds, it begins to look as if the overdose was not an accident after all and there could hundreds of individuals with a motive. It hits close to home as Royce and Sawyer have their own desires to father a baby.
It is fantastic to read a book about an established couple moving on to different aspect of married life or maybe just life – having a child. In the midst of all this, they have to contend with a murder and changing family dynamics. This one is perfect for those who are fans of the other trilogies this builds on. I know I am looking forward to the next book in this series. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I love Sawyer and Royce. I yearn for any piece of even tiniest cameos they have in the books in the same universe. I've been waiting for this trilogy to start since the last one ended.
And, I did love Sawyer and Royce in this book as well. I loved hearing about all the other familiar characters and how they're doing. Unfortunately, the mystery part was unexpectedly flat and straight-forward. The crimes and the crime solving have been so good in the previous six books, so now I'm feeling kind of... just weird about how boring and simple the mystery was in this book. Nothing really happened, there was nothing to solve, and when the crime was solved, that was that. Side plot finished, let's get back to baby making. (The mysteries were never side plots before this! They were interesting enough for me to not get bored of them even after relistening the audiobooks multiple times?!)
And then to the baby-making part. I loved how excited they were about becoming parents and the dialogue around that was good. However, the nitty-gritty of the fertility clinic visit was almost off-putting because it seemed so unrealistic for how it worked. Granted, I really don't know how the process works in the real world. They went to collect the samples, then the samples were somehow tested immediately and two hours later their surrogate Kelsie was done with her part. Maybe I'm completely wrong here and it really is that simple on the actual day of the procedure. Please educate me! I'd be glad to be wrong.
My favorite detectives are back! So is their downright intoxicating chemistry, sassy banter, and the love and respect they’ve worked so hard for. Sir Bonesington and Dolly, who maintain control of the house despite their owners’ best efforts. I love that the characters from all the spinoffs also make an appearance!
This is the first book where Sawyer and Royce are no longer working cases together. Instead, we get to join them on their journey to becoming parents. Usually in a book when kids enter the chat, I’m out. However, not only will Locke and Key be entertaining as hell trying to figure out fatherhood, it also feels like a natural next step for them. It’s something that’s been hinted at since the first series, so it is not just a trope being used to add drama.
I love getting to see them enjoying their married life as their relationship continues to grow, and relationships with their friends and family evolve. There is still plenty of spice between them, and a wonderful push-pull dynamic remains, even though the enemies have already become lovers.
They are still growing individually as well. Sawyer is acknowledging past trauma from his previous spouse passing right before they were about to adopt, and learning to deal with it in a healthy way so the anxiety doesn’t consume him. Royce is also overcoming his fears of being a bad father and (possibly) passing on his genes to their child. As is typical, they communicate with each other and work through their obstacles rather than sweeping them under the rug.
The main case in this book is worked on by Royce, and once again, Walker created a mystery that is interesting and highlights many family and class dynamics, without relying on too many twists or unbelievable motives. Sawyer is still working cold cases, but we don’t get to see him in action this book. The next one will most likely be set up to focus on him and has already been announced for a September release, with the final book in this arc coming in December. (And the alliteration titles continue!)
I would like to thank GRR for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
I absolutely love Sawyer and Royce and i can srsly read this duo any day straight into oblivion and be as happy as can be. Sexy loving and solving murders is a real power couple vibe, and Locke & Key are as delectable and awesome as they come!
That being said, this first book in the Felonies and Fatherhood series came off as i'm sure it was supposed to, in that it was appropriately heavy on the we're having a baby life, and/but (sadly for me) pretty light on the murder-mystery bits! As a fan of these gorgeous boys i 100% knew what i was getting into when i gave this story a go, and I may not be totally into the hgtv/lifestyle network-vibe this had going on, but i honestly thought the detective/cold case super-cop energy would at least be viable enough to lean into. Ofc this is very much a me thing and ymmv.
YES The Paternity Puzzle's focus on domesticity and the icky fatherhood-themed cases made sense, but i would have liked a bit more toothiness to Book 1, mostly to foreshadow the exciting drama and messed up things to come for the rest of the Felonies and Fatherhood series!
This was decent, but i am looking forward to The Sinner's Son and The Brokered Betrayals having a bit more of the vigor and intensity that had made Sawyer and Royce my favourites from time! Those titles already sound serial-killer creepy as only sinister crime in the deep south can be. So fingers crossed Walker will kick the narrative up a notch and give (new dads) Sawyer and Royce some high-stakes cases that'll truly test their resolve, because unfortunately for me, The Paternity Puzzle was not that.
Returning to these two was like stepping back into a room with friends or family you haven't seen for a while. They're like a warm hug because together they're so established, so funny and have such brilliant chemistry. I loved the reactions Sawyer and Royce both had to the start of their journey to fatherhood. Royce was certainly busy in this book too with his case and, although it wasn't a complicated crime to solve in the end, it was interesting and I liked seeing all the familiar faces as he worked. Sawyer was a little bit more low key in this one in terms of independent plot. His work definitely sets up something for later in this trilogy (I imagine so anyway) but he wasn't as front and centre with police work as Royce. Overall, this was well-written, heart warming and full of amazing characters that I just can't get enough of. As a tiny side note, both versions of the cover are some of my all time favourites too! I loved the ending and I'm so excited for the next book. If you're familiar with these from the previous two trilogies, then I'd definitely recommend this story too.
This was the absolutely perfect start to a new trilogy starring one of my all time favourite crime fighting couples.
The case that is the focus of this book is the ultimate living nightmare for couples who require help in conceiving - queer or straight. I remember reading about the real life version of a doctor who was charged with the very thing that is the focus of this book. Sawyer and Royce who literally walked into a clinic a day or two before for insemination, this would terrify the life out of them.
The way in which Royce and his father’s relationship has changed between the last series and this is a total 180 which was beautiful to see but I have a feeling going forward, it will not be total smooth sailing.
This book is NOT a standalone. This will require prior reading of both the Zero Hour trilogy as well as the Matrimony & Mayhem series. I would even recommend the Sinister in Savannah trilogy as they are side characters who are mentioned repeatedly throughout the book.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
The Paternity Puzzle by Aimee Nicole Walker is the newest adventure into the world of Sawyer and Royce. Sawyer and Royce are ready to take a huge step into building their family but murder doesn’t care about their timeline. Royce is pulled into a case that hits too close to home when a fertility doctor is found dead after it is discovered that the doctor had been using his own specimens for his patients. Sawyer is trying to stay calm while Royce investigates but both men are feeling the stress of pending fatherhood. Family ties are complicated and Royce finds himself pulling apart the web that leads to the death of the doctor.
I adore Sawyer and Royce and was thrilled to continue their lives together. With fatherhood at the forefront both men are looking at how this will impact their entire lives. The case adds stress but also confirms how much the men want a child of their own. As usual the banter was on point and the chemistry off the charts.
4 stars for Sawyer and Royce taking their first steps towards fatherhood.
First in series (Sawyer and Royce: Felonies and Fatherhood), a spin-off series. Established couple. Dual POV.
Police detectives and husbands, Sawyer and Royce are trying to move into the next phase of their lives by building a family. A fertility doctor’s death right in the midst of their own family planning is only a coincidence as Royce investigates and Sawyer frets about the future.
Honestly, I couldn’t be happier than returning to Savannah and one of my all-time favorite couples, seeing them so happy and still so enamored with each other is beyond swoony. They are still surrounded by family and friends, and the steamy interactions have possibly gotten even more steamy? An overarching plotline for this series glimmers, and I hope it won’t cause too much turmoil for this main duo. Royce and Sawyer still feel familiar, still have the banter, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of their future in this new series. A really fun read.
This is not a stand-alone. You need to read the Locke and Key books in order to understand this book.
The focus is very much on the hopes, dreams and fears Sawyer and Royce have as they beginn their journey to fatherhood.
Sawyer had his dreams shattered once before when his late husband died just before they could adopt so he is frightend to plan or prepare while Royce's relationship with his father Eddie is normally a constant up and down and he fears he won't be able to be a good dad.
What I love is that they know exactly what the other one is thinking. These two are very much in tune and support and encourage each other.
There is plenty of hot and steamy scenes.
My small niggle is that the mystery plot fizzled out as soon as it started. It sounded complex and intriguing when even the Sinister in Savannah podcast trio was there but it felt flat like a popped balloon and felt more like a bad soap opera.
I love all of this author's Savannah-verse, but Royce and Sawyer are my favourite characters of the bunch so it's an absolute joy to read the first of a new trilogy featuring them...even if it will be their last. There's an interesting enough case for Royce to solve though it's much more straightforward than previous ones. And that's ok because the focus here is very much on the relationships - marriage, family, and friendship. They're all here vulnerable yet powerful as some relationships are a repair work in progress and some already have a fantastic foundation but continue to grow and go from strength to strength. And in Royce and Sawyer's case from steamy to steamier, too.
There's a bridge into the investigation angle for book two that has me intrigued and I can't wait to see how ridiculous these guys will get in their journey to fatherhood. Bring it on...4.5* rounded up.
Paternity Puzzle- book 1 Felonies & Fatherhood Aimee Nicole Walker
4.5 Stars
Sawyer Key and Royce Locke are detectives with the Savannah PD. This is the 3rd Stage in sawyer & Royce's life, Prospective fatherhood with Fertility and surrogacy.
Royce investigate a case with a Fertility doctor that was murdered. The Mystery was easy to work out but the story was really good. Sawyer is concerned about their own Clinic and doctor, However he didn’t need to be.
This is not a Standalone. It is recommended to read this book/Series after the other 2 series that relate to these characters.
Sawyer and Royce Series:
Zero Hour Series: (3 books) Matrimony and Mayhem Series: (3 book series) Felonies and Fatherhood series: ( 3 Books)
Also recommend reading Sinister In Savanah Trilogy first.
Tropes: Law enforcement, Crime, Parenthood, Surrogacy, Established Couples, ARC,
I can’t believe I’ve got to wait three months for book two!!
This is such a sweet expansion of the series. The crime story is a ripped from the headlines one but fortunately more procedural and investigative than bodily threats. Most of the story focuses on Sawyer and Royce going through the in vitro process with Sawyer’s best friend Kelsey serving as their surrogate. It brings up a lot of issues, especially with the case Royce is investigating. Sawyer’s insecurities, Royce’s family concerns. The book is so well written and really draws on what’s come before so we can really appreciate all the character development. I am once again reminded of how much I love this author’s work. And since I just binged the five books previous to this one in the last week (re-read the Matrimony trilogy and then the two Savannah spin offs with Topher/Julian and Lio/Abe) I’ll have a readjustment period as I wait for book two in this series!
Do you know which two people would be the best fathers ever? Sawyer & Royce!!
It’s going to be fraught with emotional ups and downs, I’m sure but our boys are ready for the journey. And no one tackles life with humour and love quite like them.
A fertility doctor is dead, hitting a close to home for two men looking to start a family, and wow, his story is a doozy! Rich people and egos all around.
We also get the start of a cold case investigation that I’m sure will provide some disturbing surprises along the way. Sawyer’s going to need to keep his wits about him. Excited for that story to come.
I’m also in love with the arc of Royce’s relationship with his family, but especially with his father.
I love these two guys so much. Sawyer and Royce have my heart very firmly in their grip. I feel like we are all getting to explore the next stages of their relationship with them. From adversaries to lovers, to husbands and now fathers, these two have been through it all and I have loved every word. There is just something about reading a series about an unshakable established couple that warms my heart. I am not saying they never disagree, but their faith in each other is part of what warms my heart and makes it all worth reading. The author handles a very sensitive topic in this book and it was well done. I also enjoyed seeing this new dynamic they have because they no longer work on cases together. Excellent read and well worth it. I am already waiting with bated breath for the next book
Sawyer and Royce are back and ready to tackle the next stage of their lives together! This particular story focused on their surrogacy journey and a police investigation involving a famous fertility doctor. I found it easy to get invested in the personal and professional aspects of the story, and the love between Royce and Sawyer was as potent as ever. I got caught up in their excited hoping and planning for a child, immersed myself in the twists and turns of their investigation, and enjoyed the growth of their relationships with friends and family. I thought this particular case came to a satisfying resolution, and I'm eager to see how Royce and Sawyer's lives will start changing as they get closer to their baby's due date.
**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
This refers to the audiobook version. I listened to all of the previous stories in the Savannah universe so I waited until this new entry was released in audio. I am so glad I did, apart from it being a great new story that picks up where we left off, the act of listening to Tristan James took me right back to the centre of the story world. This story revisits characters from all of the previous books and it felt so familiar, like visiting with old friends. The crime to be solved in this story was close to home for the boys and was not the main focus but kept alongside with us becoming reacquainted with Savannah. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next with Sawyer and Royce. As mentioned earlier it was such a treat to listen to Tristan James give life to these favourite characters. A perfect performance as always.
The Paternity Puzzle is book #1 in the new Sawyer and Royce: Felonies and Fatherhood series by Aimee Nicole Walker. I devoured this delicious morsel and now can't wait for the next installment. Being back with Sawyer and Royce is everything the reader could have hoped for and more. The love and devotion these two have for each other supersedes everything else in life. Seeing them navigate their dreams for a family and the reality of life is amazing. I loved catching up with these guys and all their cohorts! The mystery/crime hits a little to close to home for them but they lean on each other for love and support and keep moving forward to their dreams and goals of expanding their family.
Sawyer and Royce, with their strong marriage and thriving careers, decide to embark on the journey of fatherhood with the support of their best friend and surrogate, Kelsey. Meanwhile, Royce is drawn into a case involving an unethical fertility doctor, making the situation feel deeply personal. Though it stirs some initial concern in Sawyer, his worries are ultimately eased. The author handles the themes of assisted fertility and surrogacy with great sensitivity and care. The investigation itself wraps up quickly, allowing Royce and Sawyer to share plenty of tender and passionate moments. The book also delivers emotional depth, particularly in the gradual healing of Royce’s relationship with his father, adding to the heartfelt moments throughout the story.
Royce and Sawyer, two of my favorite characters, are back to move to the next stage of life: becoming dads. This is the third story of this couple that went from enemies to lovers to becoming hubbies, but the first book in a new trilogy. I will admit when I finished this book I so wanted book two and cannot wait till it comes out. A great blend of mystery (Royce investigates a death that hits way too close to home given their hopefully baby) and romance. I was so into this one I read in one sitting and was in awe of how supportive these two are of one another (the way love and relationships should be), even when it is hard. You will not be disappointed so grab this one and enjoy the read. I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.
You bet that I will be devouring anything extra that we get of Royce and Sawyer. The fact that we get a whole trilogy about their journey to fatherhood, yeah you could say I’m just a little bit happy. These two men will forever be on my list of book boyfriends. Their devotion to one another is next level and their romance is so swoonworthy, sweet and passionate. They haven’t lost any of that now being married that’s for sure. I thought their fears and insecurities about becoming fathers were well written and handled. The case hits home for them and the way they support each other through it is incredibly wholesome. The setup for the second book is also introduced quite nicely. I can’t wait for more of their journey!
What a fantastic start to the Sawyer and Royce: Felonies and Fatherhood series. Brilliant expanded world building as we follow Royce and Sawyer into the next chapter of their lives. In this story we've got a wonderfully nuanced character development where we get to see the expansion of side characters, that are coming into their own. Plus the new depths we get to see on Royce and Sawyer as they adjust to potential life changes. As the guys are adjusting, we get a great mystery to be solved and a couple of longer story arcs (multiple books). Plus there's some seriously hot sexy times. Once again Aimee has created a brilliant story and I can't wait to get my hands on book two. I highly recommend this to anyone that even remotely loved the previous Locke and Key stories.
