Susan Squires is a NYT bestselling author known for breaking the rules of romance. Whatever her time period or subject, some element of the paranormal creeps in. She has won multiple contests for published novels and reviewer's choice awards. Publisher's Weekly named Body Electric one of the ten most influential mass market books and One with the Shadows a Best Book. Time for Eternity received a starred review.
Susan has a Masters in English literature from UCLA and once toiled as an executive for a Fortune 500 company. Now she lives at the beach with her husband, Harry, a writer of supernatural thrillers, and three Belgian Sheepdogs, who like to help her write by putting their chins on the keyboardddddddddddd.
I've been reading right through this series and I have to admit that this is one of the books I've been waiting for. Kemble, oldest of the Tremaine children, is thirty-nine years old and still has not received his power. He's watched as several of his younger siblings have found their mates and he finally gives up. Heir apparent to the Tremaine empire and known as "The Prince of Wales" he decides that it's finally time to marry and give up on idea of magic and true love for him. Jane is his sister Drew's best friend and has been hanging out at the Tremaine house for years. She has been secretly in love with Kemble all that time, so when he asks her to marry him, she accepts, knowing that there could be trouble ahead if he ever finds his true love and power. Meanwhile, Morgan le Fay and the Clan are planning attacks on the Tremaine family. Morgan has two of the Talisman and is on the trail of a third. What follows is exciting, heart-wrenching, and just great writing. I love Jane and Kemble together. He's the computer nerd of the family and Jane is the peacemaker, but they are a perfect fit in a wonderful series.
This series just keeps getting better. Kemble and Jane what a beautiful match.Morgan is getting desperate wanting all four talismans and the Tremaines dead. Susan Squires keeps your attention to see what will happen next. I recommend this book because it is so captivating nd full of surprises. Happy reading! 😊
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Kemble has given up on finding true love and getting a power. He and his father agree he needs to move forward in his life. Impulsively, he decides to help out his sister’s best friend Jane, who has a bad family situation, by asking her to marry him. He sees her as a respectable, sensible choice. He doesn’t know that Jane has been in love with him since childhood. She agrees to marry him, mainly because she wants the security he is offering. Part of her, though, hopes he will love her in time.
Meanwhile, the family races Morgan to find the remaining Talismans. They cannot let her get her hands on the powerful artifacts. Drew has disturbing visions she can’t make sense of, yet. She fears someone will die. She doesn’t know who.
I don’t want to give away too much of the story. I’ll just say that Kemble and Jane get more than they ever expected.
Characters
Having read Do You Believe in Magic?, I was familiar with the characters in Night Magic with the exception of Michael, who must have been introduced in another book. Even if you haven’t read any of the books before Night Magic, it is easy to jump in and get to know the characters.
It is so easy to love the Tremaine family. Each character is well-developed, unique, and interesting.
In Do You Believe in Magic?, Kemble was one of the least likable characters. In Night Magic, the reader gets to see a side of Kemble that evokes new feelings of sympathy and respect.
It was also nice to see a different side of Jane. I felt so sorry for her and I really wanted her to be happy, which made me keep turning the pages.
The romance between Kemble and Jane progresses naturally. It does not feel forced or rushed. The sex scenes were hot, but not distasteful.
Setting, Research, & World-Building
Everywhere the characters went, I felt like I was going along with them. I could see each setting clearly.
The magic of each family member is believable because Susan Squires has effectively created a world where it is possible. I never had the thought that something didn’t fit in this world.
Pacing & Plot
The main plot is about the romance between Kemble and Jane. It develops in a fairly predictable fashion.
The subplot about the family’s search for the Talismans helps move the story along. Just when things might get boring between Jane and Kemble, the reader is pulled to the story of the other family members, especially Drew, who is struggling with visions she can’t decipher.
In a few places, I thought the story got bogged down by extraneous details I really didn’t need to know. As a whole, though, it moves along nicely.
The story is cohesive, logical, and well planned. All the details fit and none were forgotten.
Style & Rhetoric
Night Magic was well-written. The dialogue was believable. Her writing style is descriptive, but not flowery.
Point-of-view
Some people might not like how much the author changes point-of-view. Personally, I didn’t mind. I liked getting the perspectives of different family members.
However, I felt some of the scenes written from Morgan’s perspective were unnecessary. They didn’t contribute to the story, in my opinion. I would have preferred more mystery regarding Morgan and her lackeys, rather than learning things from her before the family knew.
Ending
The ending was great. It leaves some things hanging, but not enough to make me feel cheated. Brian’s health, Morgan’s quest for the Talismans, Brina’s loss of magic…those are all problems that will probably be answered in the next book.
Overall Opinion
The book as a whole was wonderful. If I had to pick one thing that stands out as the best aspect of the book, I would say it is the writer’s ability to evoke emotion, whether it be fear, sympathy, sadness, or joy.
I would definitely recommend Night Magic to anyone who likes characters with unique and unusual abilities in a naturally developing romance.

REVIEW: 4.25 stars- NIGHT MAGIC is the fourth full length storyline in Susan Squires contemporary, adult Children of Merlin paranormal romance series focusing on the Tremaine family who believe they are the descendants of Merlin. Each descendant will come into their magic when they meet their soul mate-their other half. This is eldest brother, thirty seven year old Kemble Tremaine, and family friend Jane Butler’s storyline. Believing the gift of magic has passed him by, Kemble proposes to Jane hoping to stave of the stigma of being alone and without his inherited powers. Kemble watches as each sibling comes into his or her own magical power but the gene appears to be recessive in the eldest son’s DNA.
The storyline continues the Tremaine family struggle as their search for Merlin’s missing and powerful artifacts. But Morgan LeFay and her Clan of rival magical misfits are always one step ahead of the Tremaine family and NIGHT MAGIC finds the family not only fighting the Clan but fighting for their lives. When a golden chalice is located, right under their proverbial noses, the Tremaine family make preparations to retrieve the ancient talisman only to discover that someone already knows about their plans.
The relationship between Kemble and Jane is one of friends to lovers. Jane has loved Kemble since she was twelve years old but Kemble has always seen Jane as his younger sister’s friend and a member of the family. The pull towards one another is heightened with each sexual encounter and if Kemble believes magic has passed him by, Jane’s own hidden power calls to the power buried deep within the man that she loves. The sex scenes are sensual, seductive and passionate.
The secondary characters include all of the previous storyline couples as well as the entire Tremaine family. Morgan LeFay and her Clan are the epitome of evil-with no heart and no soul. We get a glimpse into a future storyline that looks to be another heartbreaking and emotional premise.
The world building continues as each family member comes into their own power and the battle with the Clan brings danger and darkness with every encounter.
Susan Squires CHILDREN OF MERLIN is a wonderful, compelling and imaginative series with romance, love, magic and drama. NIGHT MAGIC will pull you in and break your heart when one of their own fights to survive.
I have to say, I like Susan Squires style! She breathes warmth, insecurity, love and danger all together and created some true magic. It is her ability to tell a tale and invite the reader into the middle of it that kept me reading and rooting for Kemble and Jane, who, at first blush, are only married out of convenience and necessity. Kemble only saw Jane as his sister’s friend; Jane has been in love with Kemble forever. Their tenuous exploration in their unusual marriage is the thing hearts melt over. Jane is priceless and Kemble is finding a side of himself he never even thought twice about. Apparently he was hoping to find his magic and it wasn’t there, what he found was sweet Jane and the woman she really was.
Night Magic by Susan Squires is part of a much larger series, pitting the ancestors of Merlin against Morgan LeFey and her cronies, which sounds absolutely wonderful! Kemble’s family descends from Merlin and is currently taking a beating from Morgan.
And here is my confession, when I signed up for this tour, the host needed reviewers, never did they mention this is part of a series, so, yep, you’ve got it, I had no idea what was going on and even reading the blurbs didn’t give me enough information to fairly review Night Magic as part of a series. I could, however, review the book’s style, on its own merits. What I read, I enjoyed, what I understood, I enjoyed more. My rating is based on the strength of Susan Squires’ writing and has me wanting to pass go and read the entire series!

I received the book from the touring host for an honest review.
Although I haven't read the previous books in the series, I caught on very quickly. But I do think to have read the whole series would have given me a better idea of the plot. With that said, I really enjoyed this book. The main characters were strong and believable as they discovered more about each other in a very interesting setting. Both Kemble and Jane found themselves often at a loss for words as they discovered each other as lovers and not only as friends.
When Jane found herself way to deep with all the responsibilities of watching over a sick and twisted mother, Kemble came in and saved the day as a daring knight of the past.
Both had a lot to learn, but the fact that they were willing to do so and lay aside their fears and apprehension, made this a believable story. Especially Jane's character blossomed, and you could see how this shy wall flower developed into a swan between the pages. She grew from strength to strength with each hurdle that came across her path, and the two just complimented each other beautifully. I think the house fiasco was a good evidence of that. :)
The support from the rest of the Tremain clan was really touching and you could not help but to admire this family with their unique ways. Each had discovered their own unique magic which enabled them to fight Morgan in her own quest. Their loving care a remarkable detail that completed the story.
It seems Morgan was at it again as she plotted her own plans to have her immortality. The way the author brought in her scenes kept you wondering about this woman and her plans while every one else was living their lives.
An interesting story, fast paced and well thought out to give you a few hours of relaxed reading. With enough tension to keep the pace and you, turning the pages.
5 Fangs In the fourth book of the series and focuses on Kemble Tremaine and his lack of magic in his late 30’s. Kemble is desperate to move past waiting for the magic to finally come. He has given up hope that he will experience what his siblings and their partner have, Merlin’s magic. He thinks it skipped him. So after dropping Jane off at her house after his sibling’s wedding and seeing what her drunken mother had done he decides take his father’s advice. How? By asking Jane to marry him. What’s wrong with this? Well Jane is a friend of his sister Drew, and he has never really felt anything for her, but he needs her stability and kindness to keep him going. What he doesn’t know is Jane has been in love with him since she met him. So he marries her with days of purposing and realizes he didn’t know what the marriage initialed when he purposed. But will it bring his magic? Will he fall for Jane? Can he still help his family find the talisman’s to prevent Morgan from taking over the world? Read it! I hadn’t read any of the previous books before this because I received it as a review copy. Needless to say I was hooked. I will definitely back track and catch up. The mystery, adventure, and romance draws you in and makes it hard to put down. I love Jane. Very muted, shy, but adventurous and loving. Kemble seems like the to the book, no nonsense kind of guy who forgets the details when it isn’t in his terms. Very interesting match but worked. I have to say I loved the museum scene. Very detailed and the research done for this book is extraordinary! Literary/ romance/ mystery/ action/ adventure. 18 + for sex scenes. If you like the Librarian (the movie) this book is very similar. Must read! Reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock and Susan Squires.

Night Magic by Susan Squires is the 4th book in her series entitled Magic. It is based around the Tremaine family who are descended from Merlin the Magician and they are still battling against Morgan and her minions. Night Magic focuses on Kemble, the eldest sibling in the family and we see that he has not come into his powers in the start. The family comes into their powers as they meet their soul mates and Kemble hasnt come across his yet. He has special feelings for a family friend, Jane... but it seems nothing more than for that of a friend. He asks her to marry him as he does care for her, and she is in love with him- and then things pick up! This book started off a little confusing to me, just from the abrupt changes of POV, but once I got a knack for the flow I didn't want to put it down. The telling of Merlin has been done before but this was the first one that really seems different. The characters are well developed and you really get a sense of what it would be like for someone in modern times living with magic as they do. I highly suggest it for readers 16+ as there are some sensual scenes- they are really tastefully executed and I was happy with the story line and how it was all tied together. ~Dowie
"Night Magic" by Susan Squires. The love story of Kemble and Jane. She's a Plain Jane - shy, introvert but sweet and loving. Having been in love with Kemble for as long as she can remember, she accepts his proposal, even though it's more of a convenience than due to his undying love of her. Kemble, one of a family of Merlin the Magician's descendants, is depressed because he doesn't have "the magic". He's a bit stuffy and quite business like, especially in the beginning. But it's mostly due to him not feeling like he measures up. He's cute too- he tries so hard to impress and take care of Jane that he usually ends up messing it up. His antics often brought a smile to my face. I enjoyed this book - the writing style flowed and, although there are many characters in the story, I was able to follow along. This is the fourth book of the Magic series. I have not read the other books and I would recommend reading them first. Although I was able to follow and the author did a good job of recapping events and characters from those stories, I still felt a bit lost at times, not fully understanding what happened. Overall, I truly enjoyed Jane and Kemble's story - there is danger and heartache but fun times too. I look forward to enjoying more of Ms. Squires works. (Received copy for honest review)
This is a story about Jane, a very shy, reserve woman. She loves Kemble, and he wants to make her his. Kemble though needs to have more confidence in himself. He comes from a long line of magicians, and he wonders why he is not like them. Kemble does propose to Jane and she accepts, because she does not see herself with anyone else, she loves him. I felt like I would have felt a little more understanding of the book if the other books. I was a little lost, but the author did do a good job to keep you understanding. Kemble and Jane have an entertaining story and the Kemble will have you cracking up at times. There is a little of an emotions that go on in the story, but great read. I did like the story line, it was a cute read.
I liked Kemble and I guessed a couple of books ago who he was going to end up with. Here again is a well developed hero. Kemble has all kinds of doubts and insecurities. The romance was rather slighted in this one. It was there but the magic plot took over a bit here I think. The Clan got another Talisman of course and it becomes clear that it will all go down to a final showdown over the fourth one and the ceremony Morgan is planning.
Received a complimentary copy to read and review. Great book. I couldn’t put it down. The characters and the world that Susan has created are great. It has some great twists and turns. This is definitely one that should go a TBR list. You won’t be disappointed. I look forward to reading more of Susan’s books.
Love, love The Children of Merlin Series. Could not put this book down. Can not wait to read the next one. Wonderful characters and a very magical story. Susan Squires writing is as magical as her books. Will buy all of her books.
I love this series, and I'm so happy that Kemble and Jane finally got together. I did think the beginning was a bit under-cooked, but it found its footing. Looking forward to a real HEA for the entire Tremaine family at the end of this series!
I liked the book. I was happy that Jane & Kemble got together. I didn't like that Brian got so injured! It seems like the bad guys always win in these books :( I'd like to see the good guys win for once! Sometimes these books get a little (or a lot!) depressing...
