Saturn's Daughter #3

Giving Him Hell

Rate this book
Tina Clancy is looking forward to a nice, quiet Christmas, but life has other plans for the newly-minted lawyer. As a Daughter of Saturn, Tina expects a healthy dose of crazy in the Zone, Baltimore's roughest docklands. Sparkling holiday lights that spontaneously combust – check. Garden gnomes swimming in sauna-like snow melt— check. But when a blue blob crawls out of the red-hot sewer— that's a bridge too far.

Soon, Tina is trying to exorcise a malevolent ghost, stop the ruthless local chemical plant from bulldozing her neighbors, and banish endangered tourists from her increasingly quirky home. At the same time, she's trying to figure out whether her drop-dead sexy client, Andre Legrande, is a gift-wrapped present or a stocking full of coal. Oh— and Tina just may have accidentally opened a gateway to Hell.

“Unlike many down-on-their-luck heroes who never seem to suffer, Quaid’s characters are genuinely desperate, lending a real sense of danger and urgency. Without a vampire, werewolf, or fallen angel to be seen, this strong debut is a pleasantly fresh take [on the genre].” —Publishers Weekly

Mon avis en Français

My English review

I like this original series and I was curious about this third volume. The story is in the same vein as the previous one and it was interesting to find out again our heroine.

Tina Clancy, now a lawyer full-time in the Zone, has many things to manage. Of course, there is never a break in this very different place and the problems start again fairly quickly. Yes even at Christmas there is no break for our characters. But the danger is there, threatening everyone and our heroine will have to quickly find some solutions to her problems. Between Andre who decides he wants to go further with Tina while she must manage him as a customer and Dane / Max who despite his position is still determined to start again an affair with the young woman and to protect her. Yes, our lawyer has much to do! But we can add to that some passages in a different dimension, relationships that evolve, ghosts returned to haunt the living and a strange blue light that can talk.

It was an interesting novel even if it is true I think it goes a bit all over the place sometimes. A little something is missing but the ideas of the author are very original and it was fascinating to discover more about the world and its characters. I confess what I enjoyed the most during the reading was to see Justine relationships with the two men in her life. She tries to draw a line for Max, she tries to resist with Andre since he is her client but her resolutions are hard to keep, especially when both are determined to make her flinch.

It was like I said a different interesting story. The novel is read quickly and the writing is quite fluid and while it’s true that sometimes I have trouble understanding some of the choices of the author on the aftermath of her plot, I spent a good time with everything and it was an original discovery again.

I would like to thank Jamie Quaid and the LibraryThing's Early Review Program for my copy of this book. However, their generosity in no way impacts the honesty of my review.

Goodreads Teaser:

The third book in this series comes out swinging. As a series the story has become more cohesive, yet this book feels a bit disjointed. Not bad, just as if Ms. Quaid had a few more ideas than she had time and space for. With that being said, I still enjoyed the book and would certainly read another.

Tina really comes into her own in this book, standing up to anyone who gets in her way as she does her best to protect her new-found family - a.k.a. The Zone. The folks that get in her way are, at times, surprising - and help show just how much she's grown as a character.

Meanwhile she is also busy trying to figure out if she and Max can make it work - even though he's finally in a position to do the good he always wanted to do. That, and the fact that he's also in someone else's body, are not big selling points. Then there is the simmering heat between Andre and Tina. Another choice she's facing. Will she choose either man, or is there someone else out there for her? Maybe the blue blob she's become so attached to? Naw, just joking about the blue blob, although her rapid attachment to it is a bit surprising.

While there is a bit too much going on to feel as if everything got the attention it deserved, it was still a fun story, and left me rooting for Tina, Max, and Andre. I still can't say which man I'd like to see her end up with, but hopefully that will be resolved in the next book - if only for a while

Who the hell choked on the cover of this one, it's horrible.

The book itself was decently written, with a story as engaging as the first two. If you enjoyed the first two entries into the series, you will most likely enjoy this one as well; despite the horrendous 80's cover art. Seriously, did someone's daughter, girlfriend, niece, etc just beg to be on the cover or something, and this is what was expectorated forth from that suggestion?

It should be noted, however, that the gross inadequacy of the cover is not carried into the actual story itself. This validates further, if there was any need to do so, the old maxim.

While I've shelved this book "series I lost track of" that is not exactly true, I loved the first book in the series and couldn't wait to read more but its been very hard finding any information regarding this series. I've checked the authors website and facebook page but I can not find any info on this series. While I would love to read the other 2 in this series I am going to hold off until I know whats going on as I'm tired of authors getting me to invest money and emotions into something that is never going to actually be explored or wrapped up. -_-

Third book in series; this author also writes under the name Patricia Rice, and this was news to me. I hope there are more to come, but the end of the book seemed to resolve a lot of the conflict between Tina's neighborhood and the contamination caused by Acme. Would like to see more of her; interested in learning more about what it means to be Saturn's daughter and if there will be a relationship with Andre.

Meh. It was alright, I'm really glad I read it through the library. I just had a hard time connecting to the story. I liked the humor, I liked Tina, for the most part and Andre and Max but it didn't seem like it was going anywhere between any of them. Because Tina doesn't understand her powers, the reader can't understand her powers, which was really frustrating for me.

While I enjoyed the first book, the second book was ok; and this third installment just fell well short of the mark. It is like the author was rushed to put it together because everything just seemed disjointed (more so than normal).

The Zone: an area in Baltimore that due to a chemical spill ten years ago, is both unsafe and a lot of weird things happen. Very weird. Justine (Tina) Clancy who just months ago passed her bar exam and set up shop, fits right in. As a daughter of Saturn, it’s her job to dispense justice, and one of her ways of doing it is to send the truly evil to hell.

The veil between hell and the Zone is getting thinner so more weird and dangerous things are happening. Acme, the nearby chemical company responsible for the chemical spill, wants the area declared unsuitable for habitation so using eminent domain, can have a medical research facility built on the site. For the first time in her life, Tina feels like she’s got a home and is going to fight with everything she can to prevent everyone from having to leave.

This is the third book in the series and all of the regulars are back. There’s plenty of new weirdness to experience and she often finders herself fighting her hormones when it comes to both Max and Andre. There’s plenty of danger, tension and emotions. Tina sometimes goes off in a direction that didn’t at first make sense to me. That sometimes slowed things down. But the explanation comes and fits with what she’s trying to accomplish and I enjoyed the different twists as things came together. And since Tina is a lawyer, we also get into the law as well as political scenarios.

There’s enough back filler for someone who is new to the series to pick up, but I think they’d find it somewhat of a struggle to jump into the Zone, understand what Tina has done in the past as well as appreciating the characters. At least read Boyfriend From Hell first.

I got this free for review and was interested in the blurb. I hadn't read the previous books in the series, but that was not a problem as the author gives brief summaries of key information. My main problem was that the action was chaotic and there didn't seem to be any character development. In addition, I am not fond of love triangles, and it wasn't clear how many men the heroine might get involved with. She doesn't seem to have any preferences either. In addition, while the heroine is a lawyer, it didn't feel that she really was as she spent nearly all of her time running around in her supernatural toxic waste brownfield. Her efforts to figure out what was going on were piecemeal and disorganized.

The good: I liked the main character and found the concept interesting. A key question is answered in the book and the heroine learns an important lesson about her powers.

The not-so-good: Chaotic action that kept me from getting involved or invested in any of the characters or the action. When Justine goes to court, she is unprofessional and doesn't seem prepared. A love triangle (or is there a 4th person?). The main characters seem mostly to react to what happens rather than make meaningful plans or carry them out. When plans are made they tend to be off-the-cuff and poorly thought out.

Overall, I give the book 2.5 stars. The concept has potential, and I may have enjoyed the book more if I'd read the previous two. However, while I wasn't lost, I didn't feel much of the action was meaningful.

This is the 3rd in the series, and while I was able to follow the story well enough, I know I did not fully appreciate everything that was going on since I did not read books 1 or 2. This story was definitely unique and imaginative. The writing was engaging, the main character was funny, sassy, and sarcastic. I did have a hard time understanding why she didn't just leave "the zone", though! I know I would have ;) Also, there had to have been no less than 20 named characters in this book... which is too many for me. It probably would have been easier to keep track if I had read books 1&2, but even then, it still seems like a lot. Even though there were a lot of very strange things in this book (moving dumpsters, blue blobs, demons from hell...) the story still worked for me to an extent. It was fast paced and the character's personalities were realistic.

This is an enjoyable urban paranormal book. I wish I had read the first two books in the series first, but I will be going back and starting from the beginning. In this one (the 3rd of the series), Tina Clancy is a Daughter of Saturn who can wish people to hell or change them into garden gnomes! When "the zone" in Baltimore becomes even more weird with exploding lights and blue blobs crawling out of the sewer, Clancy goes looking for answers. There is a strange chemical company that may be behind all the craziness but if the zone is evacuated, will she ever find the truth? Without reading #1 or #2, I was a bit lost at times but Jamie Quaid does a nice job with back story and filling in the gaps. I liked this book quite a bit, I was given a copy to review but this is my opinion.

Its Christmas in the Zone. Our hero Tina just wants to relax and enjoy normal Christmas. However nothing ever turns out the way its supposed to in the Zone or for Tina! This book is another unique look into the world of the Zone that Jamie Quaid created. Its part paranormal fantasy part science fiction and It all unique. This book finally puts some of the puzzle together and we finally get to find out what the heck is under the Zone..... it was different that's for sure. I really enjoyed this one though at times it felt as if our hero lacked good guidance and ran around willy nilly. Tough mostly its and interesting fast paced read.

This was a really cool book. I would like to go back and read the first two in the series. But it does stand on its own quite well. I really enjoyed the characters and how they played off each other. And I love the cat. I want one. It was a really well written book. The descriptive quality of the author is really nice. Very good read.

This series was quite a departure for an author who usually writes historical & contemporary romances with touches of magic. I actually read it before I knew Jamie Quaid was a pseudonym for Patricia Rice. This is right up there with some of the best Urban Fantasies. I enjoyed it. and I recommend it.
