Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease that can affect any system and organ in the body. For the 1.4 million people in the United States who have lupus, an overactive immune system senses that different parts of the body do not belong, and it attacks these parts. The immune system may strike the cells that line the joints or tendons, for example, causing pain and swelling. An incredibly complex disease, lupus must be properly treated for the optimal health and well-being of the person who has it.
The Lupus Encyclopedia is an authoritative compendium that provides detailed explanations of every body system potentially affected by the disease, along with practical advice about coping. People with lupus, their loved ones, caregivers, and medical professionals—all will find here an invaluable resource. Illustrated with photographs, diagrams, and tables, The Lupus Encyclopedia explains symptoms, diagnostic methods, medications and their potential side effects, and when to seek medical attention. Dr. Donald Thomas provides information for women who wish to become pregnant and advises readers about working with a disability, complementary and alternative medicine, infections, cancer, and a host of other topics.
I was just diagnosed with SLE and honestly knew nothing about it other than Selena Gomez has it.
Anyways! This book was right up my alley. Very informative with lots of lovely tables and hyperlinks (kindle reader!) to help you back track to a spot in case you forgot about a previously mentioned term.
If you have been diagnosed or have a loved one who has been diagnosed, I highly recommend reading through to know how to better support yourself and others.
My ONLY thing that wasn’t met with this book is understanding how to manage Lupus with PCOS and adenomyosis; however, that wasn’t the point of the book and I’m sure the same could be said for a hundred other conditions.
I love this book! It has all kinds of helpful options and suggestions about what you can do when some weird problem pops up. Just one medication suggestion I acted upon turned around my pain situation.
I found this book to be very informative. I read the parts in which I had the most interest, then read from the beginning onward. I would recommend this book to anyone with a want or need to know more about Lupus!
The Lupus Encyclopedia is well worth the read. The overview was enlightening, the information provided was detailed, but not overly medical.
Excellent way of explaining and giving important information on Lupus. Newly diagnosed myself and I learned so much and really love this resource! Really recommend to anyone wanting to know more about Lupus and especially for Lupus patients themselves!
