Up until recently, Penelope was a witch with no magic. After having it stolen by a demon when she was just a child, Penelope had been forced to rely on sharing others’ powers as she went through the grueling training required to become an elite demon hunter. Now Penelope has more magic than she’s ever known. And when you’re this powerful, who needs salt to keep the demons away?

But power has a dark side.

Carter Prescott just wants to hunt demons and be with Penelope. But suddenly, witches who formerly had no magic are developing terrible, out-of-control powers. Now the world Carter swore to protect isn’t just endangered by malicious demons―it’s threatened by the same witches who once defended it. And Carter is horrified to see his girlfriend starting to change. Stronger. More powerful. Unrecognizable. It’s just a matter of time before Penelope changes into something far beyond his worst fears...

Penelope is back and now she is definitely not a witch with no magic. She is a witch with a ton of magic, but the question is where is she getting it from and is it stable? Is it safe? Carter is asking those questions daily and hoping she will listen to him and not use those new powers...but they are just sooo tempting...as she's drawn farther and farther into the spider's web...

My thoughts: This is such a fun and different twist on witches! I love this mixture of witches and demons and school. It's almost like Harry Potter but with the demon twist, and the demon-fighting squad which is kick-butt! The characters are really fantastic...

This spoiler-free review was originally published on my blog; BookCrushin on 10/7/14.

Let me start off by saying I adored SALT (check out my review), and I can say that STORM was a fantastic follow-up! When I read Salt, I wasn’t even sure if a sequel was being published, so when the author, replied to me saying there was going to be a sequel and it was also releasing this year I was so crazy excited! I freaking adore YA paranormal series…hell I adore almost all YA novels and Storm was a perfect sequel and finale! It has some electrifying kissing scenes (swoon) and tons of angst! Oh and of course action! I mean these are ass-kicking witches who hunt demons!

Storm picks right up where Salt left us, Penelope & Carter are paired together as Enforcers – demon hunters & protectors. They also embrace their need to be together for more reasons than just magic and demon hunting…they feel whole when they are together. However, Penelope doesn’t need Carter for magic anymore, their little expedition in book 1 (spoiler-free!) has left her with some really powerful magic. Penelope used to be missing her magic but was able to hide behind her family’s magic that she was able to harness. She wasn’t sure why she was the only witch she knew who could do this, but she knew she it had to do with her essence and the demon who attacked her family. But ultimately she had to keep it quiet because she knew something else had to be a factor.

Pen & Carter both have been keeping secrets their whole life; but they have decided to be honest with each other. Keeping their past hidden can be daunting so it’s great to have someone to trust, mostly because the witchy world are kind of dicks and very discriminating, especially to Statics – any naturally born witch who doesn’t have magic. Well something big and unknown happens and Statics gain some unwieldy power, leaving both Pen & Carter very suspicious to the why’s and how’s this has happened.

Super sleuth Carter does what he does best…finds demons and answers – he uncovers some crazy things from his deductions and knowing where to look for information. Carter is such a dreamboat. Yeah, I said dreamboat! He is smart, witty, and knows what to do with those lips other than flash a smile that can change anyone’s attitude!

Meanwhile, Penelope is starting down a path she thinks is the only answer to fix the mess with her family, friends and ultimately the whole magical world. Even with that weight on her shoulders, Pen continued to be a girl to reckon with! She always had the best intentions when it came to protecting her family, but her secrets, especially the ones not even her family knows about, were about to overwhelm her. Even once she realizes what is happening to her she decides that she must follow through in order to save those she loved even if it meant the worst fate for herself. She definitely grew leaps and bounds in a few chapters. I still found myself begging her to listen to Carter and believing in his love for her. Ahhh love – the most powerful magic of all!

Oh and you will love the amazing secondary characters. Even though some were less prevalent in this half of the duology, and others were more heavily influential. It was great to have the dual POVs to understand these characters as you really got to see both sides of each of them. I loved Ric and Connie in Salt, but in Storm they are definitely overshadowed by the demon duo of Poncho & Vassago. Seriously, those two are a riddle, wrapped in an mystery, inside an enigma, and totally awesomesauce!

Danielle Ellison has a beautiful voice. Her writing is smooth, realistic and very conversational! I loved this world that she built – so visual! Also, I absolutely devoured the dual POV in Storm! Being inside Carter’s head at the same time as Pen’s was such a fun insight! I am also happy that this series wasn’t stretched out into a trilogy because not only does that seems to be the norm these days, but this story was perfectly wrapped up in this 2nd book. Too often the 2nd book in a trilogy feels lacking, Storm is not lacking anything! I will say that I feel the option is open if Danielle wanted to write another in the series, perhaps from a secondary characters POV. I know I wouldn’t complain! Also, I had a few criticisms about Salt that I thought were definitely diminished in Storm. I never once thought “oh man here we go again.” It is great to see a story and plot progress is a very dynamic way. I would say you could even read Storm without reading Salt it was so well done, but damn you! Don’t do that! Read Salt first then careen right into Storm!

This is a wonderful example of paranormal YA! It has swoon worthy characters with lots of kissing, lots of angst, plenty of wit, loads of strength and some serious growth!

I was given an earc for review for the blog tour. It has in no way changed my feelings for this book or series and nor was I compensated otherwise.

A little salt. And a whole lot of magic... It’s just a matter of time before Penelope changes into something far beyond his worst fears…

Storm picks up in the aftermath of Salt - with the repurcussions of Carter's and Pen's visit to the De'intero. Statics all over start to get magic and their community is at risk with such an instability caused by untrained magic-weilders. They both still have to keep their halfling status a secret - and the secret starts to cost them. Pen wants to figure out a way to reverse the changes she caused, and is willing to use to Void to do so. Her reluctance to work with demons is soon wiped away when her sister becomes a victim. Delving deeper into the void, she starts to break away from her loved ones, and goes into a deal which she wouldn't ever agree to. Carter, on the other hand, has to make deals with his father to protect Pen and while searching through history, comes across Pen's role in all the events that occured. Much of the plot is driven by secrets and the harm they cause - and Pen and Carter would definitely have had it better if they didn't keep secrets from each other. While I generally don't agree with secrets and misunderstanding used to drive the plot, it did create substantial conflict that makes a lot of sense at the end.

The pace of the story was quite well regulated, and kept a balance with the reveals, the events and the character development. Pen, as I said before in my earlier review of Salt, was always focused on getting her magic back, almost to the point of being selfish. In Storm, you see her being selfless, realizing that other people's wishes also count, and her realizing that magic is not the sole purpose of her life. The ending, while left open, was quite instrumental in showing the progress she has made. Carter, while trying to escape his father's shadow, becomes his own man. He wants nothing to do with the Triad but he does find his place in leadership. The both of them, while quite on the outs for a major portion of the book, are so well-matched. Their chemistry was amazing in the first book, and while I do miss the snark, they make up for it in their love for each other, Carter specifically. The amount of risks he takes for her - it definitely puts him as a book boyfriend.

Overall, I loved the turn this story took, and how the demons and witches and Essence and Void were explained out. The thing about the sole witch, was confusing to say the least, but with the Sages and all, it did make a bit of sense. The balances were also tough to understand, and added quite a bit of complexity to the storyline. A good book, and definitely a good sequel.

Okay, I fully enjoyed reading Salt, the prequel to Storm, back when I read it earlier this year (or maybe it was just Penelope's voice). Plus, I probably spent too much time talking about Sodium Chloride and onion rings in that review.

Talk about a bit of embarrassing. It's a bit too late to do a re-review though. Or... is it?

Basically, I had high expectations for Salt's sequel because when the first book in a series is really good, the second book has to be equally good or better.

Problem: Storm suffered a little bit of sequel syndrome. Or, as TV peeps like to call it, "second year syndrome."

Back in Salt, we find out Penelope Grey is a witch without magic, and in order to actually use magic, she has to rely on others. (This duology must be highly based off Chemistry. Sodium Chloride, Covalent Bonds... am I boring anyone?) But after everything that happened in De'Intero, Penelope now has access to magic without having to rely on others. Shortly after, those who once had no magic suddenly have magic, and Penelope's changing into an entirely different person than from who she was before.

Let's get this out of the way: Storm isn't just told in Penelope's view. It's told in Carter Prescott's view as well. We get an inside look of Carter's life, his fractured relationship with his dad, and how much change the Triad actually needs. I personally think Carter's view is a great contribution to him as a character and to the book as well. Whereas Penelope is using her own assumptions about the mysterious Void – being extremely stubborn and conspicuous in the process – and trusting the words of a "friendly" demon, Carter actually goes in and takes the time to find out everything possible before jumping to conclusions.

Despite the fact I dislike Penelope 2.0, Penelope undergoes a major character change from Salt. No thanks to the Void, of course. She's a lot more stubborn (said that), confident, and completely blind. I mean absolutely blind. (Really. I don't mean vision wise, though if I want to save my vision, I'll have to start reading less or learn to deal with audio books. BOO.) The warnings are everywhere – what kind of demon helps? A demon is like a wish – you have to be careful.

But with everything that happens to Penelope within a span of a few days, it's no wonder history repeats itself. Hint, hint. Nudge, nudge.

I am, however, a bit disappointed with the way the ending goes. Or at least, how it all goes down back in De'Intero. What happens in De'Intero Part 2 is basically De'Intero Part 1 on dark steroids. The demon changes, a little bit of the showdown changes, there's more people around, but the gist is pretty much the same aside from the end, which is basically a happily ever after. I wanted someone to die... I think.

Storm didn't really meet all of my expectations as it did in Salt, but I highly enjoyed it. It's a great series for those who enjoy romance with a touch of paranormal and fantasy.

'Storm' is the second book in a fast-paced and thrilling young adult paranormal series that revolves around witches, magic, and demons. It picks up right where the first book left off. Penelope - our main character - has finally come into her own as a witch. She no longer has to rely on others for their powers, because now she has more magic that she ever imagined. On top of getting her magic, she also became an Enforcer - a group of elite witches that hunt and kill demons. Now that everything seems to be going in the right direction for Penelope - things in the witch community are turning strange and horrific. Witches who didn't have magic before now have immense powers and the elite witches, like Penelope, who swore to protect the world from the demons, are gaining more power and more magic - and it's changing them, but not in a good way. Penelope's starting to change too - and it's up to Carter to figure out what's behind the sudden magic mayhem before things get worse - and Penelope and the other witches change into dangerous, evil people drunk on power.

This book picked right up where the first one left off, so it only took me a few sentences before I was pulled right back into Penelope's world. I'm a huge fan of any fiction that has witches, so I was immediately drawn to this series. After finishing the first book, I only wanted more. My hopes were pretty high for this book and I'm so glad to say that I wasn't disappointed in the least. It was just as good as the first. The characters continued to grow and mature as they learned more about their magic and their places in the witch community. I also loved watching Carter and Penelope's relationship grow. Penelope continued to be a fantastic main character - strong, smart, powerful, and devoted to her friends and family. She totally kicked butt and I loved it. The plot was original and had an air of mystery - I was on the edge of my seat almost the entire time trying to figure out what was really going on and how Carter and Penelope were going to stop it. There's some great twists thrown into the story to keep you guessing, and the narrative was really fast paced - to the point that I couldn't stop reading and ended up finishing the entire book in one sitting. I love the writing style that the author uses - it's conversational, so the reader feels like they get to know the narrator on a more personal level than with other points of view. That's always a big benefit for me, especially when I really love the storyline and want to fully immerse myself in the world the author created. If you're a fan of paranormal fiction - especially witches - you need to check out this series. Like yesterday. I also highly recommend it to fans of other genres, including fantasy, romance, action, and mystery. There's a bit of something for everyone to enjoy - and with a refreshing plot and fantastic characters - all types of readers will find themselves enchanted by this series.

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Salt was an awesome start to this paranormal series, and I was really excited when I heard about the release of Storm. Though I did enjoy being back in this world and learning more about how magic works here, I didn't love it as much as I did Salt.

After the events of the previous book, Penelope now has access to the void. She and Carter are both halflings, but both deal with it in different ways. Penelope begins to change, and Carter doesn’t know what to do about it. She wants her magic back, and she’ll do whatever it takes. But when Statics suddenly start gaining uncontrollable power, things become chaotic. Penelope and Carter know they have something to do with it, but can they stay on the same side long enough to fix it?

Storm is told in a dual POV of Penelope and Carter. I think that was a great move, because if it were just Penelope, I don’t know if I could’ve gotten through the entire book! It was interesting to read Carter’s thoughts on everything, and definitely sweet to see how deeply he cares about Pen.

I loved Penelope in Salt, but in this one? She’s so different! The magic she’s gained from the void has gotten to her head, and she’s reveling in a power she knows pretty much nothing about. She’s in way over her head, and doesn’t want help from anyone – especially Carter. The only one she goes to is Lia, the mauve demon she met in the previous book. Not a good choice, Pen!

Carter, though. He’s absolutely perfect. Like, honestly. He’s the same Carter we met in Salt, but sweeter in this book. He’s really protective of Penelope, and I wanted to yell at her to open her freaking eyes and see that she’s taking such an amazing guy for granted! Carter has to deal with his own personal issues as well – regarding his family, specifically his father and the Prescott line. He’s under a lot more responsibility now, but all he really wants is to make sure Penelope is okay.

A lot happens in this book, and it’s actually pretty long. Though I did feel it dragged quite a bit in the middle, I was still intrigued by everything that was happening – especially the situation with the Statics. I wish we could’ve seen more of Ric, though. He’s an awesome character and incredibly funny and supportive.

I felt like the plot was dragged out for the most part and then the ending was rushed a little. Things wrap up quite fast, and it’s kind of unexpected. I don’t know if there will be another book in the series, so I’m glad there’s nothing really left hanging. But I would’ve liked more of an explanation as to how everything got sorted out so fast. Either way though, Storm is an enjoyable sequel to Salt, and if you like series about witches, I’d certainly recommend this one.

Witches, demons and too much power = a great book that has you reeling.

This is the second book in the Salt series. It picks up where Salt left off. Penelope, is a witch. No she's not green and ugly nor does she ride a broom. In Salt Pen, had no magic. Ah, but in Storm, she makes up for her time lost with out it. Carter, her boyfriend as well as herself are now Enforcers. An elite group that protects against Demons. Statics begin getting magic, they are untrained and dangerous, because they lack control.

I really enjoyed the tone of this book. It was fast paced and had me wanting to know more. I loved the fact that this book has dual POV's because I got to see into Carters head. I find it to be interesting when I get to also read what the other protagonist in a book is feeling. I saw the development of these characters. In Salt Pen, is okay but in this book you get to see how she has matured. Carter never disappoints, I love a strong male lead.

There are many twists and turns throughout this book, that I was not willing to put it down until I was able to see how the new development ended. I have to say this book grabbed my attention immensely and from the start. I have read very few books with witches but I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a fierce kick ass female protagonist, who comes into her own. A romantic love story or just like to read about witches. That coupled with the fact that the author did a great job in setting up this story and not having any holes that made me wonder who was what, and where was there, makes me a very happy girl. I hate books that leave me unsatisfied with more questions then answers. This book did not and I love that!

3.5 - Review refers to a review copy supplied by the publisher.

Storm is the sequel to Salt, in which we met Penelope, a witch with no magic, and Carter. Storm picks up soon after the events of Salt. Pen and Carter are working as Enforcers, protecting the Nons from demon attacks, when suddenly Statics start manifesting magic, but with no knowledge of how to control it, people are soon getting hurt. It seems that the events at the end of Salt have led to this, and Penelope feels responsible. Things start unravelling and she turns to an unlikely ally to help reset the magical balance. Carter is convinced that Pen can't trust the demon, Lia, but Pen wants to undo the damage that she's done. Her chosen path could save or destroy them all.

The copy I read was a pre-release review copy, which I assume had yet to be copy edited as there were quite a lot of mistakes. I mention this because it really did interfere with my enjoyment of the story. Hopefully the copy now on sale is free of errors.

This is an enjoyable follow up to Salt, and those who loved Penelope and Carter and wanted more of them won't be disappointed.

I received a copy of this book free in exchange for an honest review.

While reading "Storm" I found myself on few occasions thinking that it might be nice if the author had provided a bit more of the backstory for certain events or references made in the book. Not that the story was significantly lacking in any way, but just that it might enhance the story a bit further. But the references to these events and people were sufficient enough that I had no problem following what was happening and enjoyed the book nonetheless.

Imagine my surprise, then, when I discovered that "Storm" is actually the second of a two-part series written by Danielle Ellison. I consider it a a testimony to her skill that at no point did I suspect that I was reading a sequel. The story stands up that well on its own, and I had no trouble quickly getting oriented in the world that she presents, knowing (and liking) the characters that she has created and becoming invested enough in what was happening thatI found the book hard to put down.

* I received this novel from Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review*

Storm by Danielle Ellison was a nice follow-up/sequel to Salt. I absolutely loved Salt. The premise was so intriguing. I enjoyed the demon/witch angle and how those two entities were cleverly intertwined. Not all is good and not all is evil. It'll keep you on your toes.

I enjoyed getting back to the two main characters I came to love so much in the first installment...Penelope and Carter. I liked the way Ms. Ellison added more intrigue into their relationship and them in their roles as protectors.

The author did a great job keeping the novel fast paced, making it as addicting as the first. I loved all the twists and turns and the character development was wonderful.

I'm eagerly awaiting the third in this series!

It's very rare that I love the first book and not it's follow-up, but that seems to have happened here. I really enjoyed Salt, but I'm afraid Storm didn't do it for me. I can't quite put my finger on the reason - it just didn't go in the direction that I envisaged the story taking I guess. It kind of feels like things could have ended with a bit more finality in Salt, and Storm wouldn't really have been necessary. Either that, or it could have become a series in which the enforcers have a different adventure with each book. This two-book in-between doesn't feel quite right to me.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did but the lack of communication just did my head in. If they had of talked and shared what they found out most of their problems would've been solved a lot sooner. It got to be very melodramatic and I was ready to strangle Pen and Carter both. I did like Carter's meetings with Vassago and their Scrabble games - that bit was cool, but I just didn't enjoy this as much as I did Salt.
