Just finished reading this english translation of biography on one of the most beloved vocal artists and living legend that covers and uncovers many myths, truths and contradictions about the icon.

Divided in two parts, the first part covered the personal and career life journey of the legend. The author Yatindra Mishra spent almost a decade with the melody queen and hence it's full of many inside stories, anecdotes narrated in moderate style. The second and almost two third parts of the book contained the long interview the author conducted with her. And this too covered many significant history, personal stories, preference and opinions, anecdotes and some uncovered and lesser known facts and information about the voice of the nation. However repetition of questions in one way or another is quite tolerable, the errors on film songs, films and typos makes it irksome reading journey to me.

The book is originally written in Hindi titled as 'Lata: Sur Gatha', published by Vani Prakashan and it won the prestigious National Award for Best Book on Cinema. The english translation done by Ira Pande is apt and crisp avoiding ornamental discourse. The note written by translator prior to the main book covered it so honestly. It's surely a worthy read and surely a beautiful ode to the majestic life of the one and only Lata Mangeshkar.
